ASSIGNMENT

A short summary of the design assignment for the sustainable Stylos folly;

The folly will have to be considered a small structure, not a building, but an art object

that is part of public space in a whole. The location of the folly is situated on the fore-

court of the architecture faculty.

As indicated in the contestprogram, we would like the contestants to make use of this op-

portunity to integrate their vision on sustainability in the design. Integrating sustainability

into their design could be done through technical aspects (generating electricity for light-

ing), materials (reuse of existing products), or building technologies (modular construc-

tion). Even though a folly does not have a function, besides the integrated sustainable

message, contestants are allowed to give the folly a function. Examples of functions are;

creating a sitting area or giving shelter to an exposition.

JURY RESULTS

The jury was enthusiastic about the idea

of a temporary space which could be

created by placing canvases or panels

between poles on the forecourt. The

different activities that could take place in

this temporary shelter are well conceived,

especially through the eyes of STYLOS.

Unfortunately the pit in the center of

the forecourt negates this temporary

nature and makes it almost impossible

for emergency services (like

firefighters) to reach the building.

A solid design with great potential! The

sustainability issue is well integrated

through the reuse of materials. However,

the jury panel has its doubts about

the originality of these used building

materials. Also, because the folly is open

it may attract loitering in the weekends or

at night, which forms a big disadvantage.

Although this design is not a folly it’s a

nice and likeable design, especially the

sponsorship possibilities were well found.

The design is trying to create a connection

between the old inner city of Delft, but

misses a real relation with the faculty

itself. Also, because of the large amount

of bicycles, the design unfortunately tends

to disappear in the chaos of the forecourt.

Even though recycling containers is

a cliché, it works for this design. The

different colors make it playful and match

the faculty’s appearance. Not only is

this design functional on the outside, it

can host several activities on the inside

as well. However, there are still many

things to think about in the next round,

especially when it comes to safety and

legislation this design will be a challenge.

Making sustainability visible through

measurements in and around a downscaled

dwelling is a good idea. Unfortunately

all the current sustainability clichés

(solarpanels, windmill, green roof, etc.)

have been included in this design. Besides

making the folly a cliché, all of these

applications are susceptible to vandalism.

The jury panel likes your reference to

the Blokkenhal from the previous faculty

at the Berlageweg. However, this design

misses a clear building stone to stack

up. The forecourt would also become a

chaos with all these objects lying around.

The entry is a spatial and artistic design,

beautiful! However, the feasibility of

this design is difficult. The various

components must be made very precisely,

which is basically impossible within the

given budget. Also, the jury believes the

design is more an artwork than a folly.

It should be noted that the drawings

look really great and should be framed!

This design is a great symbol of

the amount of waste/garbage

we produce as a faculty. Using

a part of this garbage (old pallets from

FMVG) makes this design very sympathetic.

Unfortunately the design lacks a certain

elegance and the jurypanel has its questions

about the structural feasibility of the roof.

Poor whale! Your reference to ‘The

hitchhikers guide to the galaxy’

is nicely found, but unfortunately

this design is far from finished.

Strong concept! This design could

turn out to be a little bit chaotic, but it

certainly has potential. During the further

development of this project you should

keep in mind that not all bikeframes are

equal and it would be difficult to keep it

elegant. Perhaps it could also be possible

to experiment with the shape a bit. If

you look at the sustainability issue, it is

a good design. That is, if you use parts

of old bicycles as building material. The

link between the current function of the

area (bike shed) and the idea of making

a folly out of bicycles is well thought of.

Nice design and from structural perspective

perhaps one of the most challenging

plans. It is unfortunate that the shape

of the folly is not very original and the

sustainability issue is not quite convincing.

Original statement! But please notice

that STYLOS is an independent study

association. The budget mentioned in

the contest program will be provided

by sponsorships which are to be

acquired by STYLOS. It is not the faculty

who will provide us with this budget.

A nice design to work on in the next

phase, especially the aspect of generating

energy by pedalling. This design tries

to make sustainability experiential.

The jurypanel has its doubts about the

cherry tree itself. Placing a full grown tree

makes the design unnecessary expansive.

Perhaps you can think of a big luminaire

instead of a tree? This will probably

make the design a lot cheaper and easier

to build. You can also think about the

integration of computers in the design.

It is well found to use an existing material,

the pavement, as a buildingstone for the

design. The bricks will be used to create

a folly that will eventually be embellished

with planting. You could best describe this

folly as some sort of primitive cottage that

represents the beginning of architecture.

However, it is pity the idea of

embellishing the folly with plants looks

like the previous STYLOS Pavilion

(Blackbox) down the Berlageweg.

Involving the rest of the forecourt makes

this design interesting. If you define

the project in the next phase, keep

in mind the folly and the forecourt

should still be easy to maintain. Also,

at this point the folly is too high.

Trying to bring the Architecture society

together on the faculty’s forecourt

is a great idea, and so is the idea

of an ever changing object which

keeps on growing through time.

However, a folly build out of linear

elements (wooden sticks) is very

vulnerable and susceptible to vandalism.

Beside the vulnerabilty, the jurypanel

was not quiet convinced of the

sustainability aspect in this design.

Generating energy though the use of

photovoltaic cells is great. Unfortunately the

folly is placed on the least sunlit side of the

forecourt. Although this could be changed,

the jurypanel also found the material

and the lightning not quite convincing.

A fascinating eyecatcher and an

interesting project to work on,

especially if you look at the way the

object will be attached to the building.

At this point it is still unclear where the

rainwater will go to. Also, there is still a

lot of work left concerning the construction

and sustainability aspect of the design.

For example, the cable at the bottom is not

very convincing and you could think of a

sustainable material for the object itself.

At this moment the folly is just hanging

object floating in the sky. Make sure it turns

out to be a place that appeals to people.

A beautiful and elegant design!

Nevertheless the folly is very complex

and susceptible to vandalism. The

budget mentioned in the contest program

is probably not sufficient to maintain

the elegance of the current design.
