When designing we also think about other possible users besides children such as parents or carers. After all, we want to provide play areas for everyone to enjoy!

Jupiter Play ApproachOur play ethosAs an independent, design led company at Jupiter Play we have been designing award winning play spaces since 1999. We have a wealth of expert knowledge and experience in the design, supply and installation of both formal and informal play area as well as bespoke play equipment.

In 2009 Jupiter Play became the sole distributor of FHS Holtztechnik equipment. FHS are a German company who produce uniquely manufactured equipment that is the most robust, durable and aesthetically organic timber available in the market place today.

All FHS timbers are sourced from FSC accredited forests and are hand crafted directly from the factory to ensure every item is unique, adhering to the TV requirements.

Every single site is unique and we treat it as such.

We carry out a detailed survey and analysis of the site in order to ensure that we consider the impact that our design can have on a range of factors; from the users to the wildlife.

Detailed survey and analysis also enables us to pick out the features that make each site unique and help to form its sense of place.

Our designs add value to their environment whether that be in terms of how it looks or in functionality and accessibility.

Robinia Pre-treatment ProcessGet to know our RobiniaQuirky, bespoke and hand craftedIs using a timber product in your local outdoor play space right for you? Here at Jupiter play we would argue - Yes! As long as you use the right materials and consider the complete play space design; timber products can really add play value and create a stunning feature for the entire community to enjoy.

Our timber supplier, FHS Holztechnik is without question the best supplier we could possibly work with. Their approach to the manufacturing and delivery of their products is exceptionally flawless. But the raw material is only the beginning. FHS have developed many unique quality processes before they even begin to craft the timber to ensure the long term sustainability of the final product.

Strength in Robinia timberThere is a variety of timber available in the market today. FHS offers products manufactured using three main types of timber: Robinia, Pine and Larch.

Each type of timber has its own application in the market and for certain projects you may very well decide to go for the Pine or Larch options. However, when it comes to timber we are 100% confident in recommending Robinia as your first option. FHS Robinia timber will change your perceptions of timber play forever. We have decided to go into detail to explain why

The density of timber and its resistance to decay is classified on a scale of 1-5 according to the EU standard for durability of wood (BS EN 350-2). Class 1 is categorised as the most robust.

Step one Resting the timberFHS fell the tree in the winter months and leave the timbers to rest for up to three years. This resting period is crucial as it allows FHS to ascertain if any cuts of wood have developed unacceptable splits which render the wood unsuitable for use. This is our guarantee that we are supplying products with timbers that are fit for purpose.

Step two - Removal of bark and sapThis is a unique process and is a vital component in reducing maintenance requirements and preserving the overall appearance of the product. Removal of the bark and sap is crucial to preventing rotting. If the sap is left on, not only will it become very grey and dull but within two years the sap will flake away. The rotting can create a gap between the upright timbers and adjoining platforms, fixings and foundations, rendering it structurally unsound.

Step three Removal of knotsAll knots in the timbers are assessed by drilling out the knot to determine the depth and therefore if the section of timber is still suitable to use. Small knots are removed and in-filled with non-toxic wood filler. The other reason for this is to stop the knot from seeping, which is unsightly and can stain clothing.

Step four Cross bolting the timbersIt is a fact that any timber product will move and split, this is the charm of working with a natural material. FHS combat this by drilling through the ends of the posts and inserting two bolts in a cross formation to prevent the timber from splaying. Not all Robinia suppliers can offer this level of pre-treatment and we suggest you ask before making a purchase.

Robinia wood is one of only a few species growing in Europe that is categorised resistance class 1. This demonstrates that it has an extremely dense composition which means:

Robinia timber does not require any pressure treatment, tanalisation or chemical protection.

Robinia is hard to set fire to and if it does set alight it burns very slowly. This is due to the lack of oxygen within the wood which is required to accelerate combustion. Any fire damage is limited to the external surface which can be easily removed by sanding the timber down.

Bespoke optionsTimber alternativesDid you know we have a steel alternative for most of our timber products?We know that although a natural feel is often a sought after material choice, timber is not always suitable for a play space design. To help ensure we can meet the needs of all of our customers, the majority of our equipment is available in a steel option.

All of our raw steel undergoes a lengthy pre-treatment process to strip it back and clean all areas of the material. After this, the steel is dipped in hot zinc, cooled and can then be powder coated. This pre-treatment process is designed to help protect it from corrosion and is vital in sustaining the life of steel equipment and preventing rust.

Our protective coatings - Say bye to grey wood! For wooden components which are not pressure impregnated (e.g. robinia wood, bench slats) we use only high-grade open pored wood preservative coatings (no cracks, no flaking), naturally without PCBs or lindane. The pigmented wood preservative coatings protect the wood from turning grey due to the effect of the suns UV rays. These coatings also contain anti blue stain, insect and fungal protection. In addition, a water-repellent effect is obtained.

The triple application carried out in the factory produces a complete timber and weathering protection for outdoor use. Maintenance coatings are easy to apply as it is not necessary to roughen the surface, but a preliminary cleaning is all that is needed.

Bespoke? Yes we do! Our bespoke capabilities go even further beyond the choice of timbers available to you. Every piece of equipment is tailored to your site and preferences.

FHS does not stock play equipment in the factory, meaning that every piece of equipment really is tailored to your site. The possibilities are endless to creating a truly unique unit which suits your wishes, for example:

Play equipment designed with PineFHS also provide pine options on most pieces of equipment. We use a long leaf heart pine, from the yellow pine variety. This pine has a hard central core known as heartwood similar to Robinia. Long leaf pines are unique because despite the magnificent size, they have little sapwood.

Our pine is protected against water logging through the use of galvanised metal caps and feet. All FHS timbers are sourced from FSC accredited forests and hand crafted from our factory to ensure every item is unique.

Play equipment designed with LarchLarch is our champion timber for uniformity. With a heavier machined influence, these timbers can ensure you receive the size and shape of wood that you desire rather than become driven by the natural form of growth.

If left untreated, larch will only achieve a short life service of 5-8 years. For this reason, our posts are elevated on stable hot-galvanised steel feet in order to avoid contact with the ground. This helps sustain the service life of your equipment beyond one generation and adheres to the principles of structural timber protection in outdoor play spaces.

Rope coloursPlay ropes and access nets are available in a wide range of colours to suit your play area. We are also able to create bespoke net solutions which can be designed around your landscaping and product selection.

Dollar Park, Falkirk was redeveloped in 2010 to honour the historic environment of the park. The FHS Playship Kiel was included as the centre piece of the area providing an educational theme and creating a unique identity for the park. The ship structure featured a name

plaque Newsboy, which was the first ship in the

millionaire Robert Dollars shipping fleet, who

later gifted Dollar Park to the town of Falkirk. The Kiel provides excellent play value as children

develop role play and social skills, it can also be

grown robinia is peeled and polished with the sap

all brought together to form a tower. Each of

the tallest posts are coloured to match the surrounding housing at the site including yellow, green and blue tones. This unit can be adapted

to suit the colour scheme of any site. An access

point was created using a climbing ramp and

climbing net rope. There are various platforms

under the main unit which act as rest points and children can also use the slide to slide down from the top.

The unit itself includes a variety of challenging rope based agility components which link a

number of large platforms that are suitable for

lots of children at one time. The Robinia posts

of the unit are at least 30cm in diameter and include a fork at the top. These upright posts aid in the formation of visual connections to

the surrounding environment as well as bringing

a tactile, natural and organic quality to this challenging unit. The steep nature of the site, with a 1:2 slope meant that we had to understand

the technical possibilities for our equipment in

order to ensure that the bespoke design would

comply with all relevant play safety standards.

an iconic play area which included both

DDA compliant access and a variety of play

elements. The unit comprises of sand play, climbing nets, a tunnel, a double arm slide, a

curved tower slide as well as a variety of access points, encouraging users of all capabilities to

get involved. In addition to the central unit, other items such as a hammock, net combination and

a ramp climber create play elements at ground

Hyde Park is one of eight Royal Parks across

London and is very well used. This bespoke multi

play unit was designed to be the main focal

point of the new play area on South Carriage Drive. The unit adheres to the jungle theme of the play space and creates imaginative

play for all children. The tube slide was added

alongside many climbing elements to add

to the excitement of the area. The tips of the

timber posts were painted green to enhance

the jungle theme and blend the unit with the

surrounding trees.

Bespoke Equipment

This fully bespoke adventure castle play area

was designed to ensure that all young people with disabilities can join in the fun at the play

area. A castle theme was chosen and an

accessible walkway for children and adults of

all ages and abilities was built. Additional play

elements have been added throughout all

designed with inclusion in mind. The double

width slides, interactive play panels and musical items allow children with disabilities to explore

the castle and take part in the fun. Care was taken throughout to ensure the gradient on the walkways was suitable for easy wheelchair

access and rest points were included.

This embankment slide was designed to

integrate with an existing south facing slope.

South facing slides can overheat and become

dangerous in summer months so a bespoke

underground tube slide was created. The

natural form of the slope was retained and character was developed throughout the site.

The embankment features a bespoke

climbing net play which spans over the slides

underground route and generates excitement

amongst all users. Movement patterns were also considered on this site and various pieces of timber equipment were placed around the

slide area to create formal routes.

Ty Hafan outdoor space now provides accessible and traditional types of play such

as swinging, sliding and bouncing as well as

unique items which engage children on a variety of sensory levels. The concept of the area is formed around the creation of a desert island with a high up bespoke lighthouse multi

play unit looking over the Bristol Channel at the

bottom of the site. The lighthouse has suitable

access for a wheelchair along with a range of play activities once you are on the unit. We have created some unique experiences for

children in wheelchairs as well as interest and challenge for all others.

timber walls which feature small windows which

children can peek out from to see the play area below. A tube slide is attached to the

points include two other multi play units joined by a raised bridge and internal platforms.

This bespoke multi play unit was adapted for

Yerbury School from one of our playtime activity

points. A number of elements were adapted

taking into account consultation feedback. The

school also requested items of play such upper body items (monkey bars) and equipment which

suited children of all ages at the school. For

younger users, the unit makes use of the spaces underneath the platforms for imaginative play and for older children there are lots of chances to test strength and agility. Wet pour surfacing was used to create mounds around and within the unit which added extra play value to the site.

Jupiter Play worked in partnership with Sheen Mount Primary School children, the Head Teacher and Business Manager to enhance the play value

provided across an valuably large outdoor space

in this London school. Time was spent selecting FHS equipment which would encourage children to spend more time outside in a tranquil and

natural environment. A mix of equipment was

chosen to ensure all children across various age groups can enjoy the space. Items were carefully placed in the design in and around the existing

trees. Research and consultation was carried out

to ensure no underground damage was possible

as the natural landscape evolves over time.
