As traffic continues to increase on highways, rural and city centre roads, conventional traffic management technol-ogies and data processing methods are staring at obso-leteness. It is high time that the industry embrace a more dynamic approach that helps to overcome road network challenges such as congestion, emission and availabili-ty of information, and at the same time influences better use of the existing infrastructure.

With limited road network and little scope of new infra-structure, the need of the hour is to have;

Juno enables a more integrated and smarter cities approach to traffic control allowing different prior-ities and decisions to be swiftly, dynamically and easily implemented across a city, county or wider region.

Juno platform allows algorithms to be written and uploaded, then downloaded as required and deliv-ered to junctions in order to make the best decisions based on the most available information. This is where Cloud Amber’s Juno, a traffic management

solution that helps to make transit service faster and more reliable, becomes imperative.

Juno is an adaptive control platform for real time traffic signals that allows operators of the scheme to monitor, manage and set strategies in line with their requirements. It facilitates the implementation of 3rd party and bespoke algorithms in real time to curb the growing congestion problems having a wider impact on road users and the economy.

Juno integrates with all modes of transport to utilise all benefits of big data. It accepts inputs from many diverse sources such as road speed detectors, ve-hicle request and accident inputs. It relies on the whole network approach (including data from au-tomatic number plate recognition, Bluetooth, Sat-nav data, Google, National Agencies) for algorithm implementation that helps to more accurately pre-dict buses arriving at bus stops.

Better Use of Existing AssetsJuno closely integrates with a UTMC system to use all intelligent transport systems data sources to influence the way in which traffic signals sys-tems are controlled. Detectors are a valuable source of information, but Juno adopts a holis-tic approach and uses all other data sources to make real time decisions and thereby compre-hensively achieve the required objectives.

Policy Driven OutcomesWith a flexible approach to algorithm devel-opment, outcomes can be determined by the policy makers. For example – A policy to priori-tise public transport and pedestrians over gen-eral traffic during peak hours may see deploy-ment of an entirely different set of algorithms to use the whole network data and deliver the desired outcomes.

Greater InnovationThe ‘Open’ nature of the Juno platform allows engineers to run their algorithms alongside in-stead of the generic/standard options. Juno’s flexibility allows implementation and testing of diverse strategies in the real world like never before. It also facilitates accommodation of unique scenarios on complicated junctions by using unique algorithms developed to solve the occurrence of a specific problem.

Higher “Q Value”Cloud Amber’s operations team works closely with local authority’s engineers to benchmark the existing network conditions and the “Q value” to a whole network approach. Juno operating in a like for like environment performs better than any of the existing solutions.

Some of the key benefits of implementing Juno

Reduced Commissioning & ValidatingJuno is self-learning, self-adapting thus elimi-nates the need to configure every last value of the system to fit a very rigid and unique algo-rithm. This approach saves months and months of commissioning normally required by engi-neers. Instead, engineers can focus on strat-egies, outcomes and implementation of right algorithms on the system at the right time.

Reduced Personal Training and Support CostsThe user interface is simplified. It has unclut-tered mapping making it readily operable by users with no training on UTMC systems to con-trol variable message sings and manage strate-gies. This in turn reduces the cost of recruitment, training, on-going support costs and also shar-ing functions across multi-disciplinary teams.

Dynamic Multiple AlgorithmsWith Juno, the days of having only a single al-gorithm operating on signals of a region or city is a thing of the past. Juno integrated with the Strategy Manager, enable to set strategies that can be triggered by changing algorithms based on the network conditions allowing indi-vidual signals and regions to run different logic within an integrated and collaborative learning framework.

Temporary Planned Restrictions

Temporary Planned Restrictions such as street works, temporary signals and events all can have a significant impact on the smooth running of the network. By inte-grating this data in to the algorithms and data models, junctions and systems can optimise the flow of traffic by considering these types of scenarios. In addition, temporary signals can be simply and efficiently inte-grated in to the algorithms without complicated and time consuming re-configuration and re-validations.

Temporary Unplanned Restrictions

Temporary Unplanned Restrictions such as accidents, road closures or even flooding cause significant con-gestion on the network. Rather than algorithms taking (in some cases) up to 30 minutes to change signal tim-ings, parameters can be adjusted or even completely different algorithms can be applied to the network to allow different decisions to be taken quickly as a result of the restriction.

Network Definition

Network Definition is defined by importing road centre line data, but crucially integrating that with the junction positions and other fixed net-work points within the authority. This eliminates the need to endlessly configure junction approaches, match stops and bus routes as the system already integrates this data and works out the options au-tomatically.

Real Time Road Speeds

Real Time Road Speeds are gathered from all data sources and fed in to the Journey Times Engine. It is this rich source of information that can help to make real time adjustments to the signal timings based on the chosen open algorithm. In addition to real time road speeds, data from all different automatic vehicle location systems can simply be integrated in to the system to allow more sophisti-cated algorithms for signal priority.

The system allows algorithms to see where the ve-hicle is, where the last stop is, how the vehicle is loaded and how it is performing to the schedule. More subtle changes to green time can be imple-mented allowing a more efficient use of the road space. This is equally possible with emergency services, taxis and any other type of vehicles the authority would wish to give priority, but does not want the expense of fixed loops, tags of other ex-isting solutions.

Network Restrictions

Network Restrictions like train crossings, road width, height restrictions, gradients and bridge move-ments can quickly result in heavy congestion. By integrating this data with Juno platform, these fac-tors can be considered when deciding green time on phases and approaches to make best use of the network. Most of this work can be automated using feeds from Ordnance Survey, open source, community and other automatically imported in-formation from different sources and configured in to the system.
