A warm welcome to our June edition of the What’s On.

One of the many pleasures of compiling this guide every month is to see how many things there are to

do in and around East London.

This month is no exception – ranging from live music by the likes of Juanita du Plessis and the Centrestage tribute to Neil Diamond, to our country’s best comedians ... East London has it all.

This month we have the Great Gatsby SPCA Fundraiser pic-nic, the Wine Fair @ 2Swans, a visit by the South African Navy, the Your Home Expo, a Hippie Tea to honour cancer survivors and so much more. Our events calendar starts on page 47 so be sure to check that out and keep it handy throughout the month. Whatever events we receive after this book has gone to print will be posted on our Facebook profiles. You are welcome to “like” our page and receive up-dates throughout the month.

Once again we have three great give-aways this month. Thanks to Edge Road Play School, the Wine Fair and Noah’s Ark Grooming Parlour for their giveaways. Guido’s Beach-front has a cool Father’s Day deal – see page 31.

Catch our article on Geocaching by Jonker Fourie on page 16 and some much needed Holiday Club info on pages 11 to 13.

Should you wish to advertise with us, please contact Rentia on 079 594 2267 or Tirsa on 043 735 2059.

Enjoy what East London has to offer this month and send us any event-related info. We will publish it free of charge.

Be sure not to miss our July edition, we are working on two very cool stories. Oh, and remember to book your seats for Joan Armitrading! She will be in East London on 6 July 2015 at The Venue, Hemingways Mall.

Aahhrrrrr... there be treasure

What do you call it when people use multi-billion dollar

spy satellite technology to find Tupperware? It is called Geocaching. Geo-whating I hear you say? Let me explain. Basically it is a GPS based treasure hunting game using a GPS enabled device to look for containers hidden all over the world. Muggles (that is what us Geocachers call you non-Geocachers) often ask what you win or get out of it. The answer is: Nothing really; other than a sense of adventure, a spirit of exploration, an opportunity to get outdoors and spend time with friends, family and loved ones.

The way to start playing is to head straight to www.geocaching.com where you

register to get access to the website. Once you are in you have a look at the map of your area and you will see where all the Geocaches are located. I promise you won’t believe your eyes when you see how many there are with some of them probably located close to your home, work or en-route there. The listing for a specific cache would give you a description of it which will include the GPS coordinates, the size (which could be anything from as big as your little finger nail to a big tool crate or bigger), its difficulty and perhaps a hint. At ground zero you start your search and once you find it you sign your name and the date on the logsheet inside. You then replace it EXACTLY where you found it for the next cachers to find before going back online to log it.

Geocaching 101

Page 17: June What's On Web

Geocaching in South Africa is a growing activity with about 11 000 active Geocaches. There are 2,627,049 active geocaches and over 6 million geocachers worldwide by the way. Port Elizabeth has a very healthy Geocaching community while East London can boast to be home to the South African caching team with the most finds. Team iPajero with a staggering 12 000 plus finds have found just about all the caches in South Africa and they are currently in the US finding caches almost on a daily basis!

If you love to travel and explore then this is the game for you. I’ve been in the travel industry for over 17 years and thought I had seen it all. That was until I started Geocaching. Travelling through the Wild Coast recently I found a cache near The Gates on the Qolora River, at the Nelson Mandela Museum

in Qunu and discovered a waterfall called Takazi near Wavecrest which I bet very few people ever get to see. To tell the truth, most landmarks all over South Africa probably have a Geocache located near it. East London itself has a great variety of caches with quite a few located around Nahoon, Gonubie and the trails in the Umtiza Nature Reserve. If you are looking for a real challenge then stick a fold-up ladder in the back of your car and head towards Peddie or try the cache on Bird Rock in Port Elizabeth.

So next time you see somebody standing around trying to look very inconspicuous with a phone in hand while looking under rocks or behind road signs, just know that they could be a modern treasure hunter; even if they don’t have an eye patch, wooden leg or parrot on their shoulder.
