PUBLISHER’S NOTE
We have just returned from the Abbotsford Tulip Festival site, and are still fi lled with wonder over the absolute beauty of fi elds of colour and the sheer number of people who made the trek out to the Festival. The incredible weather made this year’s Festival extraordinary. Where else in the Lower Mainland does Highway #1 come to a grinding halt due to such an incredible sight? Summer is just around the corner in the Fraser Valley!
The What’s On! Abbotsford staff is very excited with the announcement last month that the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association signed a lease for the Centennial Library Building. Rejuvenating this wonderful landmark with plans to house the ADBA and the Abbotsford Arts Council’s Gallery and Boutique will be an excellent addition to the Downtown area. They will make every effort to maintain the integrity of the historic value of the building, and ensure it remains the heart of the community.
We are also so excited that What’s On! Abbotsford is becoming the go-to publication for Abbotsford residents when they are looking to see what is happening in their community. By mid-April, we found ourselves with very few magazines left as the Spring issue was fl ying off the shelves. We have been lucky to fi nd a large number of businesses, organizations and companies to stock the magazines.
We are always on the lookout for events that happen in Abbotsford, so if you or your organization has an event, please email us at [email protected].
And, of course we are happy to discuss promotional ideas, and sponsorships so do not hesitate to call Cory or Cora!!
Cheers,
Exciting Times!

“Oh, the thinks you can think!”, the Cat in the Hat exclaims full of hope and wonder, to the young Whoville boy, JoJo, during the opening musical number of Seussical JR. It is with a parallel intensity that we asparents desire the best opportunities for our children, ones that will contribute to both their character and well-being, equipping them with a skill set to bring brighthope for their future. For the families of 41 local students enrolled in Lighthouse Theatre, Heritage Christian OnlineSchool’s (HCOS) musical theatre program, there is an irrefutable belief this goal is being achieved.
Located in the Fraser Valley, Lighthouse Theatre is adynamic group of Distributed Learning or homeschool students, ranging from Grades 2-12. They are animpressive group committed to a high standard of excellence from the acting, singing, and choreography tothe costumes and spectacular set design. The essential goal of Lighthouse Theatre is to develop their students' God given gifts to achieve excellence in the performingarts, to His glory. Talented, they are. HCOS strives to provide quality educational choices with Christian values, which is evident with the innovative educationalexperiences they offer their student body. LighthouseTheatre’s amazing Broadway style musical productionstands tall among them.
Spring 2013, Lighthouse Theatre was given life whenHCOS came along side of two, young, talented women, actually sisters whom were once homeschoolersthemselves, Sarah Goerzen and Nicole Farion. Raised inMission, the girls were encouraged to pursue developingtheir gifts from a young age - Sarah excelled in dance, soshe trained in all the major disciplines and now runs herown studio in Maple Ridge. Nicole Farion, blessed with asweet voice which only few possess, honed her craft and is working to achieve the Grade 10 Royal Conservatoryof Voice, and now teaches private voice lessons fromher home in Mission. All the while, both girls followed their passion for musical theatre, performing for 11 yearswith a theatre company in Maple Ridge. When Allana Lemke, support teacher with HCOS and now ExecutiveProducer with Lighthouse Theatre, attended a showing of Through the Looking Glass, witnessing Nicole’sundeniable talents in her lead role of the Red Queen and Sarah’s unique skills choreographing the balletsequences, she immediately understood why the Farions wanted to discuss the possibility of offering a musical theatre learning opportunity through HCOS for studentsin the Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and Langley area. Over tea and coffee, Allana, Nicole, Sarah, and Arlene, their mother who’s equipped with a producing skill set, hammered out the details and Lighthouse Theatre was born.
"The love of theatre was sparked in us at a young age andwe are thrilled to be the Directors of Lighthouse Theatre.
Our desire is to use our passion for the arts to inspire another generation of young actors and actresses to
and a genuine love of the stage. Watching our studentsperform, bringing a show to life, is truly breathtaking." Sarah Goerzen and Nicole Farion, Artistic Directors.
JR, which was well received. Then in 2015, both the cast size and audience grew with Disney’s My Son Pinocchio JR, necessitating Lighthouse Theatre to locate to a largervenue for May 2016, for their production of Seussical JR. They are proud to now call the Clarke Theatre their home.
You can still purchase tickets for the following shows: May 19-21 @ 7pm and Sat @ 2pm. It’s an event you won't want to miss. With Seussical JR's central message heralding, "a person's a person no matter how small", we encourage you to bring your family and friends, one and all. You are guaranteed to be wowed and have a ball, as the talent you will see in our community is tall.
On behalf of Thing One and Thing Two, we bid you adieu - but before we do - here is more info for you:

Everyone has a story to tell. Whether your family moved to Abbotsford fi ve years ago or 100 years ago
makes no diff erence. You have a story about how you or your family got here and why. Your story tells us what’s important to you and to your family. Maybe your dad coached hockey or your mom was the president of your school’s Parent Advisory Committee. Maybe the family ran a business or a farm. Maybe your family came here from another country or another province. At some point a decision was made to live here in Abbotsford and Abbotsford is your home.
By taking part in Abbotsford Community Foundation’s Legacy Stories program you can leave both a fi nancial and a historical legacy to your community. You make a commitment to leave a bequest to a fund held by the Abbotsford Community Foundation and your story is inscribed in the Abbotsford Legacy Stories book on display at Th e Reach Gallery and Museum and on the Foundation’s website.
Th e story featured here is about Hank Kroeker who has been a supporter of our community for many years. Since having his story written he has taken on yet another senior volunteer role with the Abbotsford BC Summer Games. It’s people like Hank that help make Abbotsford a great community to live and work in.
Th ere is no cost to participate and we don’t ask how much you are planning to bequest. We arrange for you to be interviewed and you can review and edit your story. Th e only other info we require is what fund you wish to support with your bequest.
Donors may leave a bequest to support an existing endowment fund (visit www.abbotsfordcf.org for a complete list including endowments established by local charities) or donate to ACF’s Smart and Caring Community Fund supporting local charities or ACF’s Student Awards Fund where the income provides scholarships for graduating high school students from Abbotsford pursuing post-secondary education or training.
In addition, you also have the option to create a new named endowment fund to be held by the Abbotsford Community Foundation where the income will be designated to one or more charitable organizations or used to create a scholarship or bursary.
If would like to learn more about this program please contact Susan McAlevy, Executive Director, Abbotsford Community Foundation at 604-850-3755.

Hank Kroeker’s Abbotsford Legacy StorySeptember 1, 2015As the undersigned, I promise to contribute to the future of the community of Abbotsford through a bequest to the Abbotsford Community Foundation.
Hank was the fi rst person in his family to be born in Canada. Th ree older siblings, John, Aggie and Kay and his parents John and Elizabeth had been born in the Ukraine. Following Hank’s birth there were two more sisters added to the family – Betty and Elsie.
“Th e family’s fi rst home in Canada was in Northern Alberta, in the small town of La Glace just outside of Grande Prairie,” said Hank. Th ey arrived in June, 1948 and I was born in October in the neighbouring town of Hythe. My mother’s sister had moved there in 1926 and sponsored the family to move to Canada.
Ukraine in the 1940s, for a German family, was a place you didn’t want to be if you could fi nd a way to be somewhere else, so we were very fortunate, he said.
Aft er three years of enduring the cold Alberta winters, the family moved to Chilliwack because his mother had another sister living there. John and Elizabeth bought a small farm – only two and a half acres. “We had 2,000 chickens 1 milking cow, a few pigs and the rest was a large raspberry fi eld.
“For 25 years I couldn’t eat raspberries because all of us kids and my mom spent most of the summer months picking raspberries. I would see the other kids going off to have fun in the summer but all we had to look forward to was work. We’d go work for a neighbour picking strawberries, then pick raspberries and then it was time to go back to school. Hank graduated from Chilliwack High School and then received a Bachelor of Commerce degree at UBC where he graduated in 1973 and then stared working for KPMG in Vancouver, earning his CA degree in 1975.
“KPMG bought an offi ce in Abbotsford in the early 1970s and three of us came out from Vancouver to help run it. I retired from KPMG in 2007 aft er 34 years in accounting,” he said. Hank’s wife Pam worked for the Bank of Montreal in Abbotsford before taking on the responsibilities of a full time mom.
Hank and Pam have three grown children including their son Jonathan who just graduated from medical school in New York and is starting his career as a resident in the University of Alabama Hospital. His daughter Andrea is married with two young children and lives in Abbotsford. His other daughter Brittany, started off studying sciences at the University of Victoria, but switched to an accounting program at UBC, articled with KPMG in Vancouver, and joined KPMG’s Abbotsford offi ce in 2013. She and her husband Ian have a baby girl.
Hank has been a volunteer with the Abbotsford Community Foundation since 2006, including nine years as a board member where for some of that time he served on the executive as Treasurer. He is currently chairing the Planned Giving Committee. Other community service included President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley where he had been a “big brother” before his children were born, serving on the Board of Directors, Treasurer of the Lions Club, and many years on the board of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, including one year as President. He is currently volunteering as the Director of Administration of the Abbotsford 2016 BC Summer Games. Hank is one of Abbotsford’s community champions.
