Pastor’s Corner by Fr. Michael Trail
2 St. Damian Parish
As part of our efforts to be a welcoming faith community with open arms to our family and friends in Oak
Forest, we’re initiating a new program called Bulletin Sharing Sunday. We’re doubling the number of the
bulletins that we print each week on the first Sunday of the month. I would like to invite you to take an extra
bulletin home with you to give to a friend, family member, or put in on your bulletin board at work. This is also
an opportunity to share your faith experience with someone and invite them to come to St. Damian where they
can experience community and spend time in prayer and worship.
Some of the best things come by word of mouth: recommendations for a good dry cleaner, a trustworthy
repairman, or the best place to get a meal. How many times have you tried a new place because someone you
know and trusted recommended it to you? We can do this same thing with our faith. This weekend, take an
extra bulletin with you and share it with someone that you know. Share with them how God is working in your
life, and invite them to Mass.
What Does it Mean to Be An Intentional Disciple?
Within the last twenty years, our Catholic culture has embraced again the idea of being an intentional disciple.
For far too long, our Catholic faith (especially in big cities such as Chicago) was experienced implicitly – that is to
say that it was very easy to claim a Catholic identity because everything around us was Catholic friendly or
explicitly religious. Many of our older generational parishioners remember a certain time when public school
gave you a couple ours off during the school day to attend catechism class at the local Catholic Church – that
concept isn’t even fathomable today!
We are no longer living in a time when Catholicism is experienced implicitly through culture – there needs to be
an explicit nature to your life of faith. This idea of being an intentional disciple is precisely that: Intentional!
We are in a very exciting time in the life of the Church because we can reclaim what it truly means to be an
intentional disciple living in 2018. In Sherry Weddell’s book, Forming Intentional Disciples she lays out five steps
of spiritual growth that are part of experience of a conversion to being a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Stage 1: Initial Trust
Where a person is able to have a positive association with Jesus Christ, the Church, a Christian believer or something identifiably
Christian. Trust is not the same as active personal faith. Without some kind of bridge of trust in place, people will not move closer to
God.
Stage 2: Spiritual Curiosity
When a person is intrigued by or desiring to know more about Jesus or some aspect of the Christian faith. This can range from mere
awareness of a new possibility to something quite intense and proactive. Nevertheless, a person at the threshold of curiosity is not
yet open to personal change. Curiosity is still essentially passive, but it’s more than mere trust.
Stage 3: Spiritual Openness
The critical point when a person acknowledges to him or herself and to God that he or she is open to the possibility of personal and
spiritual change. This is one of the most difficult transitions for a postmodern nonbeliever as it can feel dangerous, crazy and out of
control. Openness is not a commitment to change. People who are open are simply admitting they are open to the possibility of
change.
Stage 4: Spiritual Seeking
The threshold in which a person moves from being essentially passive to being one who actively seeks to know the God who is calling
him or her. Seekers are asking, “Are you the one to whom I will give myself?” At this stage, the seeker is engaged in an urgent
spiritual quest, seeking to know whether he or she can commit to Christ and his Church.
Stage 5: Intentional Discipleship
This is the decision to “drop one’s nets,” to make a conscious commitment to follow Jesus in the midst of his Church as an obedient
disciple and to re-order one’s life accordingly.

Pastor’s Corner Continued
The mention of “pre-discipleship” brings us to our last challenge: namely, the
need to finally pass from exploration of Jesus and his Church to full and
complete commitment. This is what Weddell calls the “dropping the net”
moment. The image comes from the story of St. Peter dropping his nets,
leaving behind his former life and livelihood, his social connections, his home
and even his family and choosing to follow Jesus Christ wherever he went,
come what may (cf. Lk 5:4-10). It is the single most important decision a
person can possibly make (which is why Jesus calls us to count the cost). But it
is the goal of the Christian life — all Christian lives, not just converts.
We don’t have to be knocked off a horse like St. Paul to become an intentional
disciple. It can happen quietly at Mass in the recognition that the Eucharist
TRULY IS the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ! But however we
arrive at it, it will be the springboard to follow Jesus consciously and
intentionally with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength. It will change our
life … and that of the world around us!

The Feast of Corpus Christi - the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, historically known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi,
celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. It is
traditionally celebrated on the Thursday following the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. The feast dates to the Middle
Ages and originated with a visionary nun and a Eucharistic miracle.
In 1263 a German priest, Fr. Peter of Prague, made a pilgrimage to Rome. He stopped in Bolsena, Italy, to celebrate
Mass at the Church of St. Christina. At the time he was having doubts about Jesus being truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament. He was affected by the growing debate among certain theologians who, for the first time in the
history of the Church, began introducing doubts about the Body and Blood of Christ being actually present in the
consecrated bread and wine. In response to his doubt, when he recited the prayer of consecration as he celebrated
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, blood started seeping from the consecrated host and onto the altar and corporal.
Fr. Peter reported this miracle to Pope Urban IV, who at the time was nearby
in Orvieto. The pope sent delegates to investigate and ordered that host and
blood-stained corporal be brought to Orvieto. The relics were then placed in the
Cathedral of Orvieto, where they remain today.
This Eucharistic Miracle confirmed the visions given to St. Juliana of Mont
Cornillon in Belgium (1193-1258). St. Juliana was a nun and mystic who had a
series of visions in which she was instructed by Our Lord to work to establish a
liturgical feast for the Holy Eucharist, to which she had a great devotion.
After many years of trying, she finally convinced the bishop, the future Pope Urban IV, to create this special feast in
honor of the Blessed Sacrament, where none had existed before. Soon after her death, Pope Urban instituted Corpus
Christi for the Universal Church and celebrated it for the first time in Orvieto in 1264, a year after the Eucharistic
Miracle in Bolsena.
Inspired by the miracle, Pope Urban commissioned a Dominican friar, St. Thomas Aquinas, to compose the Mass and
Office for the feast of Corpus Christi. Aquinas’ hymns in honor of the Holy Eucharist, Pange Lingua, Tantum Ergo,
Panis Angelicus, and O Salutaris Hostia are the beloved hymns the Church sings on the feast of Corpus Christi as
well as throughout the year during Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Corpus Christi procession
