eliminate the sale of alcohol to those underage,a higher level of understanding of its potentialdamage is required amongst young people. Thisis why alcoHELP works in partnership withschools, the local police, councils and youthgroups, to provide young people with the factsabout the consumption of alcohol.

Most parents, teachers and indeed youngpeople themselves are shocked when they findout that more than 40% of children who startdrinking before the age of 13 will go on to abusealcohol or to become alcoholics at some point intheir lives. In a school class of 30 (13 to 14 yearolds), this means an average of 10 children willalready be drinking, making this more than just astatistic.

10 will steer clear of alcohol altogether and theremaining 10 have the potential to get involvedin abusing alcohol. These young people are arguably the most vulnerable to outside influ-ence and peer pressure. alcoHELP’s AlcoholAwareness Programme is specifically designedto arm those young people with facts surrounding the harsh reality of drinking to excess.

Lifting the lid onteenage drinking

ince 2005 more than 50,000 childrenand young people in Essex have taken

part in alcoHELP workshops and events, gaininga greater understanding of the dangers ofalcohol abuse.

Having just received a ‘Big Lottery Award for All’grant of £9,950 to take the 2Brite2Binge roadshow to schools, youth centres and sports clubsacross Essex, alcoHELP aims to increase the number of schools participating throughoutSouthend and the surrounding area.

Currently, there is very little help available for children with an alcohol problem other than seeing their GP and Southend is no exception. The funding will enable alcoHELP to go someway to providing much needed support. After allnational NHS statistics revealed that 7034 children under 18 years old received treatmentfor problems related to drinking alcohol in thefirst six months of 2011. In fact, a recent reportfrom the NHS states that injuries as a result ofteenage drinking are at the highest level in theUK and are far greater than other European countries.Whilst every effort is made by local authorities to

“Our methodology is a proven way of relayingthe harsh realities of alcohol to children andyoung people so that they can understand therisks. We know they take on board what we havesaid when we ask them several months laterwhat they learnt about the dangers of consuming alcohol, and most of them can relayjust how detrimental it can be on the brain!”Hannah Elliman, a teacher at The Gilberd Schoolin Colchester, comments:

“We invited alcoHELP into the school because wewanted students to hear from people who hadfirst-hand experiences of the dangers of alcoholdependency. Terry and Debby, recovered alcoholics with alcoHELP, are a fantastic, honestresource - the students were captivated by theirpersonal experiences and were motivated to askinteresting, probing questions about the impactof alcohol addiction and how to seek help.”

If you are interested in alcoHELP coming in to deliver a programme and would like further information on what the charity does, please visitwww.alcohelp.co.ukor email [email protected]

Debby Peirson, one of alcoHELP’s foundingtrustees, an experienced teacher and recoveredalcoholic, comments:“Our presentations are powerful and shocking –those delivering the sessions, including myself, talk candidly and openly about the devastatingeffects alcohol has on the body, relationships withfamily and friends, and a young person’s future.

“We are actively involved in the national‘2BRITE2BINGE’ initiative. We also participate inthe local delivery of the national ‘CrucialCrew’(year six, primary school) and ‘Reality Roadshow’(secondary school aged children) programmes that aim to deliver information, advice and guidance on a wide range of topicsand issues to children and young people aged 10– 14.

“We also deliver bespoke programmes on demand for older children and young peopleand produce information booklets for parentsand teachers.”

Having delivered the programme to thousandsof young people in Essex over a period of 6 years, alcoHELP fully understand that no two groups ofyoung people are the same. Each has its ownconcerns. This is why programmes are tailored todiscuss issues from binge drinking, alcohol induced anti-social behaviour, through to specificsubject areas such as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.Terry Martin, also a trustee of alcoHELP, adds:

issues. A peaked cap or sun visor will also helpto keep the sun out of your eyes and potentiallyharmful UV rays off your face. If you’re going fora hat, look for one with a breathable, mesh topto stay cooler in warmer conditions.

Headbands or hats might not be your preferredstyle, but remember that function oftenoverrides form. Let’s face it, very few people lookat their most glamorous when they’re going fortheir Personal Best. Even I am prepared tosacrifice looking fabulous for an hour, every nowand then!

Another issue affecting those with thick and/orcurly hair is the dreaded, humidity ‘fro. If youthrow your hair up in a ponytail and then run indrizzle, you are quite likely to return with abonkers bird's nest on your head. Braiding theponytail minimizes the frizz or wrap a secondband around the bottom of your ponytail.

ven if you’re training for a marathon, youcan still look like a hair-o with these tips

I recently competed in my first ever marathon andI am very proud to say I finished the 26 miles and385 yards round the streets of London in 5hrs9mins and 9 sec, raising £6000 for Cystic Fibrosis.

Whilst pounding the route, I had plenty of time tolook at the other runners around me – typical hair-dresser, I know – and wonder how my fellow com-petitors and fund-raisers’ hair was holding up tothe exertion. In many cases it wasn’t good!

In order to look your best whilst getting fit, thereare some very simple tips you can follow.

For most athletes, their goal with regard to hairmanagement is simply keeping it out of the faceand off the neck. With that in mind, a ponytail is agreat starting point. If you have shorter hair, try twolittle pigtails.

You can also keep flyaway, stray hair and bangsunder control with grips or slides. To keep yourlocks in place while you’re sweating, be sure tospritz beforehand with hair spray.

One-piece stretchy headbands solve the flyawayproblem. When it's cold outside, opt for a fleeceheadband.

Alternatively, baseball caps, sun visors and MarcoPierre White’s favourites; bandanas, solve all hair

Money Matters

or regular contributions – and regular saving is agood habit providing peace of mind – the key isto ensure money goes into funds that will bemanaged over the longer term.

Retirement Planning is an area that requires earlyattention. The time to start planning forretirement is now. Childbirth, marriage, divorceand being widowed have all had a significantimpact on the pension accrual of many women. Many women’s pensions are affected by thecareer breaks they take to bring up children orcare for elderly relatives.

Protection is the final main pillar. No one likes tothink about suffering a critical illness. Peoplewould rather put off thinking about it until later.Yet the effect of doing so can have unthinkableconsequences on financial futures and families.

Adopting the best strategy for a lifelong financialhealth plan is not a straightforward process andthere is no substitute for obtaining theprofessional advice of a specialist wealthmanagement expert. The key is to find a wealthmanager who can be trusted and who can take aholistic view of personal finances, nowand in the future.

omen are far more likely to favourstraightforward investments such as

cash ISAs over more complex investment plans, according to a survey by the Chartered InsuranceInstitute (CII). The survey found that women feltthey do not have sufficient understanding of fi-nancial products and as a result were less confi-dent about making financial decisions than men(Source: Chartered Insurance Institute July 2009‘Women And Financial Advice’).

With more women becoming financially success-ful and independent than before, the need forthem to consider carefully targeted, holistic finan-cial planning advice is becoming of paramountimportance.

So what are the key issues that women - and menfor that matter - need to consider in planning theirfinancial futures? There are four main pillars of awealth management strategy :

Tax planning involves consideration of issues likeInheritance Tax (IHT). This tax does not just affectthe wealthy, and applies to all assets, including in-vestments and savings. And there are manythings people can do to ensure that as much oftheir estate as possible stays in the hands of theirloved ones.

With Investment, it is vital that money works hardso that investors can continue to reap the benefits. In planning an approach to investment, peopleneed to determine their attitude to risk from thevery outset.

Whether investing with a lump sum investment

ingapore - a city which offers visitors a hugecontrast between the ultra modern, and

the very traditional.

You can shop till you drop at the numerous shoppingmalls in Orchard Road which house all of the designershops and international brands that you can dreamof, or you can head to Little India or China Town whereyou will find a network of colourful, bustling streetsand alleyways with shops and market stalls sellingeverything from spices and silverware to traditionalpotions and dried fruit.

Visit Singapore Zoo with its famous Night Safari, ortake the cable car over the Sentosa Island. And ofcourse don’t forget to head to Raffles for that famousSingapore Sling, accompanied by monkey nuts !!!Once you have travelled that distance, it makes senseto visit some other countries and Singapore is a greathub for twinning with Thailand, Bali and particularlyMalaysia which borders Singapore.

As a special treat you could take the Eastern & Oriental Express, on a 3 night journey of a lifetime. It

runs from Singapore up to Penang, and then on toThailand for a trip to the River Kwai, finishing inBangkok.

Alternatively, from Singapore, I suggest flying to thelush island of Borneo, famous for its wild organutanpopulation and spectacular rainforests. You can join a2-night tour which begins by visiting the magical ‘tur-tle island’ where you are taken to a turtle hatchery andthen spend the evening watching the turtles comeashore to lay their eggs. The following day you will betaken to the orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok whereyou can witness these amazing creatures in their nat-ural habitat.

Having toured a city and experienced the local wildlifeit’s time to unwind on the spectacular beaches alongBorneo’s coastline. The Shangri-La Rasa Ria resort inKota Kinabalu offers the perfect retreat to unwind andrelax. This resort sits right on the beach and is sur-rounded by acres of tropical vegetation.

If after a couple of days of lazing round the pool or in-dulging in the luxurious treatments that the spa hasto offer, you fancy being a little more active then thereis a variety of activities including a wide range of wa-tersports, an 18-hole championship golf course, ten-nis, horse-riding, and the hotel has its own naturereserve and orangutan education centre.

recipe of the month

Chargrilled Red Mullet with Mango,Prawn and Chilli Salsa

For the Salsa

2 large red chillies100g/4oz peeled cooked tiger prawns, thicklysliced4 spring onions, thinly sliced1 small garlic clove, finely chopped1 ripe but firm avocado, peeled and diced½ ripe but firm mango, peeled and dicedJuice of 1 limePinch salt

Method:

1. Preheat your grill to high or get the barbecue hot or heat a frying/griddle pan.

To make the salsa, cut the chillies in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds. Cut themacross into thin small strips. Put them in a bowland mix with the prawns, onions, garlic avocadoand mango. Juice the lime and add to the bowlwith a little salt and a pinch of sugar. Taste andadjust the seasoning (you may need more saltand sugar and a little black pepper).

2. Brush the fillets of fish on both sides witholive oil and season with the salt and pepper.Cut each fillet into 3 strips on the diagonal. Depending on your cooking method eitherplace skin side down on a barbecue or in a pan,or skin side up under the grill. Cook for 4-5 minutes that is all ! Check they are just cookedthrough, so the flesh is opaque.

3. Spoon the salsa on to four serving plates, arrange 3 pieces of fish over each one. Drizzleeach plate with a little extra virgin oliveoil and garnish with a few coriandersprigs.

his quick dish can be cooked over achargrill, barbecue or just a

conventional grill or pan fry in a hot pan.

The combination of Tiger prawns in the salsawith mango and avocado works really well. Ifyou can’t get red mullet, sea bass fillets are read-ily available, use them. Lovely for a light lunch, supper or a big platter for summer entertaining.

Enjoy!

t might seem an obvious thing to say but weare always very careful when sorting through

items from estates, whether deceased or just down-sizers, because there are usually hidden treasures thatnobody knows about or remembers.

A particular example occurred recently. A lady hadspent months going through her mother’s things andthen asked us to sell what we could. The items ingeneral were good but hidden in the bottom of a smallbox she gave us as “odds” was a wonderful collection ofautographs collected in the 1930’s. They includedChurchill, Kipling, Chaplin and various other politiciansand actors but best of all was a very thin piece of papersigned by Mahatma Ghandi with an accompanyingletter which sold for £800. The collection as a wholecoined in a healthy £2,000 but could have been a “lottery win” for someone if it had been sold as a mixedbox or even sent to a boot sale!

Dutch miniature chestSold for £450

The motto from that one is “always ask us first!” Thesedays it often isn’t the obvious items which are worthmoney because, changing taste and the internet haveturned it all upside down.

In the same sale, and originating from only a few doorsaway from the autographs, was this delightfulminiature chest. At only 5 inches tall it was a Dutch silver piece dating from the early 20thC. The detail wasoutstanding with every cupboard and drawer open-ing. This went under the hammer at £450 and flew offback to Holland. This buying back of a country’s treasures is quite typical with the more open marketthat results from sales, such as ours, being live onlinearound the world.

areas with three different design constraints; groundfloor side and rear extensions, roof conversions andtwo storey extensions to the rear and side. You maywish to development your home by constructing asingle small extension or a more comprehensive de-sign combining all available areas, but whether usingpart or all of your PD rights each extension must bedesigned within specific individual parameters.

These PD criteria are by their very nature restrictiveand aim to limit extensions. The scope of develop-ment is constrained and the best solutions are usu-ally achieved by obtaining planning permission. However should you choose to extend within yourPD rights we always advise submitting drawings tothe planners to obtain a ‘Certificate of Lawfulness’ toverify the legality the development. This is differentto an application as it does not provide approval butassesses the lawfulness of the development with re-gard to PD rights only. You will receive a certificatestating you have the lawful right to carry out thework in accordance with the drawings and the build-ing regulations, which is essential should you decideto sell you home

It is always interesting to receive questions and as al-ways I am happy to deal with any specific questionsabout any part of the construction process [email protected]

his month I will try to answer a questionthat has been asked of me several times

whilst I have been writing this column - “is planningconsent always required for small extensions to myhome or can I avoid the need for making a planningapplication”

The answer to this question is “NO planning permis-sion is not always required” however there are strictdevelopment guidelines and limitations to the size, height and shape of an extension that does not re-quire consent. This set of rules and your ability to ex-tend your home are known as your ‘PermittedDevelopment Rights (PD)’ and are set out withingovernment guidance which is available to view onthe ‘Planning Portal’ website.

In summary you are able to make certain changesto your house to extend to the side, rear and the ex-isting roof space to create extra living accommoda-tion without planning permission. This does nothowever apply to flats, maisonettes or other non-res-idential properties. In addition, if you live in a pro-tected area i.e. a conservation area, listed building orother area of special interest, these rights may havebeen revoked by an Article 4 direction which re-quires all changes to be subject to local Authority ap-proval. If in doubt you should always check the statusof your property by contacting the local planningdepartment.

There is a common misconception that a total areaor volume calculation is used to control the increasein the size of your house, but this is now not the case. The PD Rights are now divided into three separate
