During June/July we meet at about 7:20 pm (before Mincha). Sponsor Kiddush Or Seudat Shlisheet This is a great way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or special occasion, or to commemorate a yahrzeit, with your Kesser Maariv family. Contact Judy Whisler at (847) 677-2281 or [email protected] , or the Shul office to reserve your date. Due to increasing costs, a regular Kiddush is $300-330 and SS is $60, effective July 1, 2016. Tisha B’Av The fast to commemorate the destruction of the first and second Bait Hamikdash begins on Saturday evening August 13 . Because Erev Tisha B’av is Shabbat, not th all of the usual laws apply; for example, the meal before the fast may be meat, since the meal is on Shabbat. To allow people to eat the final meal as late in the day as possible, we will daven Mincha on Shabbat, August 13 at 5:00 pm (please note we will not serve seudat shlishit in Shul). You should finish your pre-fast meal no later than7:50 pm. We will daven Maariv and read Eicha at 9:05 pm after Shabbat is over so families may drive. However, we do not make a regular Havdala; instead we say “Baruch hamavdil bein kodesh lechol.” On Tisha B’Av we observe the chameshet inuyim, which are the same five prohibitions that are observed on Yom Kippur for the entire Tisha B’av. The prohibitions include: no eating or drinking, no annointing, no wearing leather shoes, no bathing or washing even part of your body, and no marital relations. As an additional sign of mourning, we do not exchange greetings, engage in levity or transact business. We also are not permitted to learn joyous passages of Torah. Instead we learn those passages from the Talmud in Gittin or Moed Kattan that deal with the destruction of the Temple or laws of mourning. We may also learn those sections from the Nach dealing with the destruction of the Temple provided that we skip those sections that speak of redemption. Tisha B’av Schedule SHABBAT AUGUST 13, 2016 Mincha at 5:00 pm. Finish your pre-fast meal by 7:50 pm. Maariv & Eicha will begin at 9:05 pm. At this time we will remove the parochet from the Ark, dim the lights and sit on the ground or low stools or benches. Eicha and the evening Kinot will be read. SUNDAY AUGUST 14, 2016 Shacharit will begin at 8:00 am. There is Torah reading and a Haftarah. As a sign of mourning, we do not don the Tallit or Tefillin until the afternoon. At the conclusion of davening, we recite the entire Kinot service. Rabbis Louis & Ben Zion Lazovsky will give commentary on the Kinnot. We do not get up to sit on regular chairs until after mid-day, which is at 12:56. Mincha will begin at 7:30 pm. We put on the Tallit and Tefillin and recite those sections of the davening that were omitted in the morning. We also take out the Torah and read a Haftarah. Maariv will begin at 8:00 pm and will be followed by Kiddush Levanah, the sanctification of the moon. The fast will end at 8:34 pm. Make Havdala over juice or pop, not on wine or grape juice. On the merit of our sincere prayers and mourning for Jerusalem and for the destruction of the Bait Hamikdash, may the Almighty hear our prayers. May He have mercy on us and send the Mashiach to redeem us from the four corners of the earth to a rebuilt Eretz Yisrael and Bait Hamikdash. DVAR TORAHTHE THREE WEEKS AND THE NINE DAYS“Bain Ha’metzariim - Between the Narrows,” is how oursages refer to the three week period between the fast of“Shiva Asar B’Tamuz - The seventeenth of Tammuz,” andbetween the fast of “Tisha B’av - The ninth day of Av.” This year the fast of the seventeenth day of Tammuz isobserved on Sunday, July 24 . The period is one ofth

profound sadness and bad luck when the Jewish peoplecommemorate the breaching of the walls of Jerusalemwhich eventually led to the destruction of the secondTemple. In fact, both Temples were destroyed on TishaB’av.

As this is a period of bad luck and mourning, weavoid going to civil court or entering into business dealsthat are other than routine. We also refrain frompleasurable activities such as live performances, plays, operas, musicals, movies or listening to music. We also donot cut our hair or nails. The Nine Days begin on Friday,August 5 . Ashkenazic Jews do not eat meat, drink wine,th

swim or bathe in hot water from then until after Tisha B’av. As we do not have public displays of mourning on Shabbat,we eat meat and drink wine on Shabbat even during the

nine days. Tisha B’av (observed) begins at sundown on Saturdayevening, August 13 , and concludes 42 minutes afterth

sundown on Sunday evening, August 14 . The Fast of Theth

9 of Av, or Tisha B’av, was originally to be the day ofth

greatest joy for the Jewish people. It was on that day thatthe Jewish people were to enter Israel after their exodusfrom Egypt. However, when the spies that Moses had sentto explore Israel returned on the night of Tisha B’av, theybrought back a false report so evil that the people rejectedthe land and G-d. As a result of this sin, the Almightyissued a decree against the Jewish people: they wouldwander 40 years in the desert and all males age 20 and overwould die in the wilderness, never to enter the promisedland. The Almighty further decreed that as a result of thefalse tears shed by the Jewish People, the day wouldpermanently be one of travail. Indeed, both Temples weredestroyed on the 9th of Av with the subsequent exiles ofthe Jewish people; the Spanish Inquisition began on thisday in 1492, and approximately 425 years later, World WarI was declared on Tisha B’av. 11 years ago, the expulsionof Jews living in Gaza began the day after Tisha B’av.

The solemnity of Tisha B’av requires that a majorfast begin the evening before and last approximately 25hours. During evening services we read the Book of Eicha– Lamentations, which deals with the misery of our peopleduring the time of Churban – destruction of the Temples. In the morning we read the Kinot services, which recountthe sorrow and suffering of the Jewish people throughoutthe ages. It is a day of reflection; the Jewish people repenttheir past misdeeds to bring themselves closer to theAlmighty and prepare for the Days of Awe. It is also a dayof hope; tradition teaches us that the Mashiach – Messiah

– will be born or will arrive on this day with Elijah theprophet informing us of our redemption.

Tu B’av - The 15 day of Av corresponding to Friday,th

August 19 - “Tu” meaning 15 in Gematria - is a minorholiday on which we do not fast, say eulogies or sayTachanun. Several reasons are given for the holiday. Oneis that by that day, the summer is half over, leaving us moretime to learn Torah at night. Another reason has to do withdrying wood to be used on the Mizbeiach (Altar) in theTemple. The Maharal says that while the Jews were in thedesert, they only married members of their own tribe. Afterthey entered the Land of Israel, they began to marrymembers of other tribes on the 15 of Av. Because theseth

marriages strengthen ties between families in differenttribes, it is a cause for a minor holiday. Contemporarily, this last reason is the most oft-cited, and therefore it iscommon to celebrate weddings on this day.

Rosh Chodesh Elul - Shabbat & Sunday September 3 -4rd th

- When Moshe Rabbeinu ascended Mt. Sinai to receive thesecond set of Luchot (Tablets), he went up on this day. The month of Elul also initiates a 40-day period ofrepentance. Within those forty days are the Aseret YemayTeshuva - Ten Days of Repentance that begin with RoshHashana and conclude with Yom Kippur. The Shofar isblown every morning during Elul to awaken our sleepinghearts to return to Hashem. We also recite the penitentialPsalm L’Dovid Ohrie (Psalm 27).Selichot, prayers of forgiveness and atonement, are recitedat midnight, while Ashkenazic Jews recite them for at leastfour days prior to Rosh Hashana – this year, we will beginSelichot on Motzai Shabbat, September 24, 2016. In ourtime, because being up at midnight for so many nights isdifficult, many only recite the first Selichot service in themiddle of the night.

The focal point of Selichot prayers is the recitationof the 13 attributes of G-d. Tradition teaches us thatreciting these attributes evokes Divine mercy. G-d Himselfbestowed this tradition to Moshe Rabbenu when heascended to the heavens to receive the TenCommandments, Torah and Oral traditions.

Rosh Hashana will begin Sunday night October 2,and Yom Kippur will be Tuesday evening and WednesdayOctober 11 and 12 .th th
