The motorcycle industry trade association in Germany, the IVM,staged a half day conference in Cologne in May at which ChiefExecutive Reiner Brendicke presented the outcome of a researchproject that sought to establish the size and importance of the

German motorcycle market in economic terms.Described as a “cross-cutting” sector, one that involves several kinds of economicactivity and has its impacts across several fields of commerce in Germany, Brendickeintroduced his findings by saying that “the motorcycle industry in Germany is anextensive network which takes its value from the engineering service, individuality, design and life in general in terms of its economic importance and now, for the firsttime, we have been able to document just how deep the integration of themotorcycle industry goes in social and economic terms”.The background for the research has been the cycle that the German market, likeall others in Europe, has been through in the past decade. Ours is a market in whichthe quality and popularity of our products have always been subject to macro-economic, demographic and wider social issues over whichwe, as a specific market, have very little influence. As has been done by ACEM, the Brussels basedinternational motorcycle industry trade association forEurope, Brendicke sought to once and for all draw attentionto and define the considerable economic impact that ourmodest little backwater of capitalism actually has as a partof the bigger picture in the one language that everyone canunderstand – money.

His conclusion is that the value of the motorcycle industry to the economy ofGermany is not quite so modest after all. Okay, compared to the biggest of

economic beasts such as automotive, technology, energy, construction and the like, the motorcycle industry is small, yes, but in the land of the “Mittelstand”, smallreally is beautiful. As a specialty industry, the narrow definition annual turnover of 7.3 billion eurouncovered by Mr Brendicke and his team starts to look more than respectable.Indeed, it starts to look like the kind of economic contribution that regulators, administrators and politicians would be well advised to help nurture. That turnover figure takes account of the production, sales and repair of motorcyclesand scooters in Germany, together with production and sales of parts andaccessories. However, taking the collateral impacts of the motorcycle business intoaccount – the ancillary services and products it funds – the broader definitionturnover becomes 11.6 billion euro in Germany alone.

The IVM report concludes that every 400th generated euro in the Germaneconomy and every 330th job in Germany are directly or indirectly created by

the motorcycle industry. Direct employment is put at 28,600 jobs, created by thesale and repair of motorcycles, with a further 22,500 or more jobs being createdin the wholesale and ancillary industries. This can then be extrapolated to a total broad definition of 130,000 jobs in totalbeing created by the impact of motorcycle industry activity in Germany.

In the past three years total German exports have increased by 11 percent. In thesame period the German motorcycle industry has seen its exports grow, in realterms, by some 46 percent; from 2005, when exports were worth some 980 millioneuro, it has grown a decade later to be worth 1.7 million in exports in 2015 – thatis 0.15 percent of total German exports. In addition to the economic value of the production and sale of motorcycles andthe equipping of riders, the IVM also points to the economic value of their use –the savings in terms of parking provision costs, the savings in time costs, congestionreduction and the estimated savings of greenhouse gas emissions – put at theequivalent of 39,343 tons of CO2 a year.

In 2014 the population of Germany was put at 82 million people; the number ofmotorcycles and scooters in use in Germany is put at being over 5.9 million. Withsome 66 percent of the German population (men and women) being, broadlyspeaking, of typical riding age (15–65), that equates to a PTW ownership rate ofnearly 11 percent - or more than one in ten Germans of estimated riding age owning

a motorcycle, scooter or other form of PTW. On the samemath (33m PTWs owned by an estimated typical riding agepopulation of 335 million), this is slightly ahead of the EUaverage of just under 10 percent owning a PTW.On a narrow basis ACEM estimate that the motorcycleindustry makes a direct contribution of around 35 billioneuro and 155,000 jobs to the economy of the EU –meaning that Germany’s contribution is around a quarter, and a third of the overall EU impact of the motorcycle

industry on the overall EU economy. No surprise then that the IVM should consider its findings worth profiling. Also nosurprise if they are hoping that doing so will see the recent moment of epiphanythat has seen the European Commission conduct a volte face and accept themotorcycle industry as a valid and valuable partner in achieving its economic, transport and environmental aims replicated in the Federal Republic.Progress has been made in Germany recently in terms of the licensing changes thathit the market hard – as it did and continues to do in all of Europe’s big five markets– and trickle-down from the Central Commissariat in Brussels is starting to resultin somewhat more enlightened thinking where the role of PTWs in public policymaking in Europe is concerned.Research such as this produced by the IVM is invaluable in framing the argumentsin favour of allowing the motorcycle industry to be seen as a part of the solution, not the problem, so compliments and congratulations to the IVM on their findings!

Proving their all-round design andmanufacturing capabilities, here arethree very different kinds of exhaustsystems for three very different kinds ofmotorcycles by Arrow Special Parts fromnear Perugia in Italy.First of all, going to their impressive raceheritage and credentials, it is a difficulttask to improve on a bike that has justwon the WBK, but in the case of theimpressive 2016 Kawasaki ZX10R, thatis exactly what Arrow say they havedone.Arrow’s R&D department have come upwith no less than 11 different new(street legal and racing) exhaust systemsand four competition racing kits. All slip-on silencers can be installed on originalheaders, removing the OE catalyticconverter, thanks to a model-specificmid-pipe design.Arrow say the dyno tests results areexcellent - the power on the rear wheel, with the original exhaust, is around185hp, which increases to around186hp with the Arrow slip-ons andreaches 192hp (with a "greatimprovement" in torque at low andmedium engine range) with the "halfsystem" made by the silencers and thelink pipe, removing the OE catalyticconverter. At the other end of the motorcyclespectrum, 'Urban' is a new system forMaxi-Scooters. Offered with newmaterials and optional catalyticconverter, Arrow say that the 'Urban' is

a "giant step in innovation",incorporating a "heap of new features".Those features include a shorter silencerwith Superbike 'Race-Tech' stylediamond shape, completely re-engineered interiors with a newsilencing system, swingarm mounts thatare welded to the silencer body, eliminating the adapting plate andimproving durability, and a "Racing"style header with optional catalyticconverter.Available in stainless steel with blackpainted finish or in aluminium, withclear or "dark" finish (and rear end capwith matt black finish), Arrow say thestreet legal system with a removable dB-Killer delivers reduced weight andimproved performance. If the ZX10R is at one end of themotorcycle spectrum, and with thegeneration of large displacement Maxi-Scooters at the other, then MetricCruisers are right in the mid-market.Arrow's new 'Rebel' exhausts forJapanese cruisers is their first entry intoan exhaust market that rewards style asmuch as performance. The company says that "eye-catchingdesign and breathtaking sound" are thehallmarks of their new 'Rebel' line, withstainless steel alloy headers, "blackceramic" coated silencer, removablebaffle, plug(s) for the oxygen sensor andcarbon fibre rear end cap.Street legal, Arrow say the new designsdeliver up to a 40 percent weight

reduction and up to a 10 percentincrease in power. They are available for Kawasaki VulcanS650 2014/2015 and Yamaha XV (Bolt)950 / 950R 2014/2015, with newmodel applications to follow, and workis in progress to extend the range toother bikes.

Said to “open up previously unavailableoptions in suspension tuning”, this new rangeof fork oils from Swiss manufacturer Motorexincludes 4W viscosity for the WP Performancesystems used by KTM and Husqvarnamotorcycles as standard equipment. The company says that by way of selectivechanges of the oil’s molecular structure, theirresearch and development department hasmanaged to “optimise and balance thecharacteristics that help a suspension systemdeliver optimum feedback. The specialmolecular structure of the oil ensures thattractive and impact forces are no longerdiverted along a zig-zag path like anaccordion, but through a multi-level gridstructure instead. Our “3D ResponseTechnology” takes its name from this three-dimensional structure of the new molecularcomposition”.The lowest possible friction coefficients, optimum air separation performance of theoil and maximum thermal and shear stability– “achieving a perfectly harmonious triad ofthese partly contradicting characteristics isthe greatest strength of the new technology”.Available in six different viscosities, withfinely graduated viscosity grades (from 2.5Wto 15W), allowing compliance with OEspecifications, Motorex says they allow fine-tuning of the forks to a rider’s own individualpreference and are described as “an idealbasis for finding the perfect set-up – be it foroff-road use, for the race track or for roadriding – in conventional as well as upside-down forks.

Versatile customscreens from GiviItalian manufacturer Givi recently launched twonew screens (the 100AL/ALB and the A800N),which form a "bond" to the round headlights, allowing custom specialists to install them onspecials or cafe racers with ad-hoc mounting kitsfor the available installation points. The 100AL/ALB model (seen here) is made by deepdrawing, meaning its concave shape is achieved byplacing a 2 mm thick aluminium sheet into aforming die and pressing it with a punch. Comparedto the traditional bending technique, thistechnology is said to enable different surfaces (3Deffect) to be created with absolute precision (andremoving the need to apply the classic and muchhated rubber trim). The screen is available in two finishes - 100AL isfinely brushed and anodised to withstandweathering and embellished with a gilded platewith embossed Givi logo, fixed by two stainlesssteel rivets; the 100ALB is black anodised with asilver Givi logo plate. The screen attaches to the bike using a model-specific kit. Givi say they have already prepared kitsfor the BMW R nineT, Triumph Bonneville 865 andYamaha XSR700; however, other kits will bereleased during the year. A custom bike builderwanting to install this screen could easily fabricatea kit which anchors it to the two stainless steelplates riveted to the rear.

Despite the size (20.5 cm height x 26.5 cm width)the 100AL/ALB is said to provide respectableaerodynamic protection, deflecting airflow abovethe head of the rider (height and riding positionpermitting). The A800N model is moved by well designedfairings and has a fibreglass structure thatsurrounds the headlight to which it is attached anda low, angled smoked screen, which is cuthorizontally along the top. Givi says it is a perfectmatch for classic or modern bikes - a mounting kitfor the BMW R nineT is already available withadditional kits planned. Provided the headlight willfit the 195 mm diameter aperture, custom builderscan easily adapt it to the front end of bikes, usingthe existing anchoring points on the inside of thefairing.

DESTINO Adventure combination boot-in-boot conceptHaving successfully entered the riding suits, helmetsand gloves markets, German adventure tour specialistTouratech is now bringing out its own touring bootsas the next step in its range of in-house developedmotorcycle gear. The DESTINO Adventure is said to combine a highlevel of protection with numerous comfort features, and what Touratech says are several completely newfunctions. As with its approach to the rest of itsapparel range, the DESTINO is a combination product

- a touring and enduro boot, a sporty motorcycle bootand leisure shoe all in one, with functional and safetyfeatures combined in a novel integrated concept.Rather than being geared to one particular use, thecompany says the design considerations focused onthe rider’s needs in a different range of situations -reflecting the mixed-use that adventure tour riderssubject their machines to, and all their accessory andapparel products too.Made from waxed, full-grain leather, the boot isreinforced with protectors - an impact-resistantpolyurethane toe cap and heel protector with a metalcap that can be screwed onto the tip of the bootsupplied for off-road riding, and a plastic shin guardprotects against frontal impacts.

A robust insert in the sole effectively prevents the foottwisting and bending in a fall, but at the same timeis said to be supple enough to allow the foot to rollwhile walking. The oil and petrol-resistant rubber solehas a chunky tread to provide a secure footing onmore slippery surfaces.Features include an extra-wide opening and threerugged buckles, which can be precisely adjusted inlength thanks to a finely pitched adjustment system. On the shaft of the boot, a soft top edge made ofCordura keeps the wet and dirt out; the outer shoe isdeliberately not made to be waterproof. This isbecause the range of uses for the DESTINO Adventureincludes off-road touring. Special design solutionssuch as a stitched-through sole make it impossible touse a membrane in the outer shoe, and a membraneinstalled directly beneath the upper material wouldprevent the boot drying quickly if it ever gets soaked.Instead the waterproof and breathable climatemembrane is integrated into the inner shoe. PatentedOutDry technology means it can be worn separatelyas a fully functional, washable shoe in its own right,

as well as providing the internal comfort and weatherproofing for the boot.A retractable, coated stainless steel cable concealedbehind the top buckle means the boot can beattached to the motorcycle while just using the shoe. The anti-bacterial footbed can be renewed, ifnecessary, or replaced with an optionally availablecomfort insole.Available from the spring of 2016, Touratech isclaiming a world-first for this concept, saying it marksa next logical step with a multi-purpose approachthat first appeared with their Compañero touring suit, namely high-spec riding gear system componentsthat can also be used as functional outdoor clothing- apparel designed for the destination as well as thejourney.
