LUTHERAN CHURCH

NORWALK, OHIO

June & July

2016

FROM PASTOR ANN St. Peter is alive and vibrant and I am glad to pastor this congregation. So many of my colleagues lament the aging of their congregants and the lack of children. When I mention that we often have 20+ kids for the children's sermon at the late service and as many as 10 kids at the 8:00 service, they are genuinely envious. A colleague whose church is very similar in size to us told me that sometimes when he calls children forward for the children' sermon, there are no kids in church. On a good day, he may have 10. Children are a visible sign of the health and vitality of our congregation. Our membership roster has more than 200 children listed--out of about 750 total members. In our January Fellowship Hall Meetings, I heard over and over the same refrain: we need to serve more youth and young adults and young families. So we are doing that. You'll find a laminated card in the pew racks talking about how much we love children. This was a project of the Evangelism Team. We have also started a young adults group that includes singles, married's and young parents. The Evangelism Team is working towards ensuring that we have babysitting services at all events where that is appropriate. The Cherish All Children Team has set up prayer partners for ALL of our young members and we are developing a Safe Child Policy intended to provide protection and accountability for all children's activities and for the adults who supervise them. Thanks in great part to Vickie Hemenway's leadership, we have an active youth ministry. Michelle Schaffer maintains the children's worship bags and of course, let' s not forget our Christian Day Nursery School and Sunday School ministries. We are blessed to have so many children as a part of our St. Peter family. It should be a priority for us to find ways to make children and families welcome in our midst so that the faith of Jesus Christ is passed on to the next generation. Oh, and let's lose the language that children are "the future of the church." On the contrary, children are the church NOW. Let's make sure they know this, and that St. Peter loves them and always welcomes them. May God continue to bless us with the joyful voices of children.

Peace, Pastor Ann

Worship Notes

ORDINARY TIME

Ah, Ordinary Time! Otherwise known as Time After Pentecost or the “long green season” and formerly known as Holy Trinity Season. As you can see by the various names, it is a time in the church year that is difficult to characterize. With no festival days and no seasonal themes, Ordinary Time is just that: the ordinary time of the church year. The color of the season is green and there is no real liturgical emphasis except perhaps growing in faith. Over the summer, we will hear many of the great gospel stories that are unique to Luke including the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, and an assortment of healings, miracles and teachings.

While there are no official liturgical festivals in June and July, we will have

a couple of celebrations. Choir Sunday is June 5th, featuring the Senior

Choir, the Junior choir and the Celebration Ringers at both Sunday

services. Worship at Lakeside is June 19th. See details elsewhere in the

newsletter. And on July 30th-31st, we will celebrate Christmas in July with

Christmas music throughout the service.

MISSED WORSHIP?

You can now find the sermon on: www.stpeter-elca.org. Go to “Worship” and you will find links to podcasts of the sermon.

HEARING AID DEVICES

Our new sound system came equipped with personal amplification devices for those of you who may have hearing impairment. The devices will help you hear the worship service more clearly. If you would like to try using one, see an usher.

SUMMER MUSIC

It’s hard to believe, but summer is right around the corner. Choir Sunday will be June 5th with all three choirs participating. After that, they will break for the summer. It would really be great to have special music continue throughout the summer and that is where you come in. If you have something you would like to share or know a friend or relative who is musical and would be willing to come to worship – now is the time to speak up. Please contact me so we can set a date. If you need help selecting music, I can try to do that as well. Our talents and gifts from God are to be used!

Thanks to everyone who suggested favorite hymns for us to sing in the summer. We hope you enjoy singing them. It is still not too late to sign up for summer music. ~Thanks, Bob Battiste, 419-366-0927, [email protected]

CHRISTIAN DAY NURSERY SCHOOL

The 2015-16 school year has come to a close. We will miss our 4's and PreK 5's

students and parents and wish them the best as they move on to Kindergarten. We will

see our 3's in September as they move on downstairs to the 4's class. I want to offer a

BIG thank you to all the Christian Day Nursery School Staff for the awesome job they

have done this year. Joyce Stevens and Sandy Cole taught the 3’s class. Deb Obergas

and Victoria Willer taught the 4’s class. Debbie Rhoad taught the PreK class. Krista

Wagner led the children in worship during our Temple Talks and Michelle Howk along

with Krista Wagner were our teachers’ aides. Kristin Miller, Susie Black and Jen

Redmond were our substitutes for this year. Ladies...enjoy your summer!

The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Trike-a-Thon raised $1231.00, children,

their parents and siblings participated this year. St. Jude’s reported that CDNS total

contributions over twenty-nine years are over $75,000.00.

In the Four Year-Olds classroom we have had window blinds placed on the

windows to help with the hot afternoon sun during the warm months and to help keep

the warmth in during the winter months. The teachers are looking forward to this

addition in the fall. If you would like to help with this purchase, donations can be made

to CDNS. Thank you for all your continued support of our program.

September 7th is the First Day

of the 16-17 school year, already

there are 100 children registered.

We do have openings in the 3's, 4’s

and the 5's programs.

Have a great summer!

CHRISTIAN SERVICE DAY/EVENING UPDATE

Christian Service Day and Evening workers have decided to share some of our projects with people in our own area who are in need of blankets, baby kits, school kits and health/personal care kits. Help will also be given to our mission partner church, Redeemer Lutheran in Toledo. We will continue to send kits and quilts to our Lutheran World Relief ministry.

As always, we will need the help of our congregation to make this happen.

During the month of June we will collect items for the Baby Kits. Items needed for the Baby Kits include: lightweight cotton t-shirts (size 1-2) receiving blankets (up to 40” square) hand towels sweater/sweatshirt with a hood or baby hat sleepers/gowns (without feet)

During the month of July we will collect items for the Health/Personal Care Kits. Items needed for Health/Personal Care Kits include:

bath towels (approx. 52”x27”) bath size bars of soap metal nail clipper (adult size) sturdy combs adult size toothbrush in package

During the month of August we will collect items for the School Kits. Items needed for School Kits include: child size blunt scissors 24 crayon box 70 sheet notebooks (wide ruled) 12 inch/30 centimeter ruler new unsharpened #2 pencils

We invite you to come and help us in our work. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 9:00 a.m. until about 11:30 a.m. when we break for a potluck lunch together. The evening group meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 6:00 p.m. for a potluck dinner and a work session. You do not need to know how to sew to be a part of these groups. We look forward to your help in this ministry!

LEARNING TO SEW FOR A CAUSE

Have you always wanted to sew but didn’t know where

to start? Have you always wanted to help with the

Lutheran World Relief kits but didn’t think you had

the talent? The women of the Christian Service Day

group will teach you how to sew together the quilts

and Baby Care kit items during the summer at three

separate classes.

These classes will be held on:

June 25th when you will learn how to sew quilt squares;

shirts/sleepers; and

jackets.

narthex.

CONCERNS COMMITTEE UPDATE

We will be providing a meal for Habitat for Humanity in August. Megan Culler will be coordinating this project. Volunteers will be needed to donate food, prepare the meal or deliver and serve. Save the date...September 11th we will work on God's Work, Our Hands. Plans are being made to honor our first responders in our community with cards & cookies to show our appreciation for their service & dedication.

OUTREACH/CONCERNS

The Norwalk Area Food Bank is asking the community to help in the best way you know how. They are asking for monetary and food donations or for you to come in and give your time and/or talent. It takes a community to battle hunger and they need and appreciate all the wonderful support from everyone at St. Peter. Summer requests: cereal, peanut butter, jelly, ravioli, canned fruits & vegetables, boxed dinners, dried pasta, rice or beans, popcorn, cake mix, dish soap, tissue and toilet paper. Place your donations in the shopping cart in the narthex.

CONCERNS OF THE MONTH

you to all those who supported this wonderful program. Together St. Peter raised

$1,039.01 for CDNS.

May: The Concern of the Month for May was Lutheran World Relief.

Thank you to all those who supported this wonderful program.

CONCERN OF THE MONTH FOR JUNE

The Special Concern for June is the Partners in Education fund, in which we make contributions towards the tuition of St. Peter members who are attending Capital University.

CONCERN OF THE MONTH FOR JULY

The Special Concern for July Christmas in July, a local ministry to provide school supplies and clothing to Huron County children. Look for the Christmas tree in the narthex, take a tag, buy the item(s) lists, and return to the church by July 24th. Cash donations will be used to fulfill the tags not taken or given to help other children with school items. If you wish to make a donation, please use a pew offering envelope and mark it appropriately. If you want your donation recorded as part of your offerings to St. Peter, please make sure your name or envelope number is included. Checks should be made payable to St. Peter.

ORGAN UPDATE

As of newsletter publication, we were more than 2/3 of the way towards having the purchase prices of the new organ. We have nearly $48,000 in cash, over $10,000 in unpaid pledges, leaving a balance of about $24,000. THANK YOU!!! If you have not yet made a donation or pledge thus far, we sincerely hope that you will do so. This new organ will enhance our worship for at least the next 2 generations. The new digital interface will give us a variety of new sounds and musical possibilities not doable on the old organ. The new speaker system will mean that wherever you stand in the sanctuary, the organ volume and quality will be the same. This instrument will enhance and enrich our worship and make those beloved old hymns (and the challenging new ones!) sound better than ever. Please consider how you might support this project. If you have questions, feel free to contact Pastor Ann or Music Director Bob Battiste. And if you have already made a donation or pledge, THANK YOU!!!

Please bring your table service and one dish of food to share. There will be games, music and a family friendly ball game. Hope to see you there!!

Angels in the outfield? We are trying to get enough people to share in the fun to go watch the Cleveland Indians vs. the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, August 12th.
