KIP STUBBERUD SNARES MONTANA TITLE

TO TOP MONTANA OIEN VICTORY

iCip SLubberud scored four wins against one loss to win ttie Montana Championship playoff which was held in conjunction with the Midsummer .Open in Missoula on July 14-15. P h i l Heikkinen, who scored the lone win over Kip, finished one half point back after losing a hard game to Paul Motta in the f i n a l round. Motta, who had to be favored going into the competition due to hi s marvelous s t r i n g of successes in the past year, had to set­t l e for t h i r d place with a 3-2 score a f t e r losing with the Black pieces to both Kip and l a s t year's Champion Mike Jensen. Jensen placed fourth with 2^-2^ while B i l l Lynch (H) and Ron Erickso (^) t r a i l e d , Stubberud regained the t i t l e which he previosly held out­right in 1980, and in three way t i e s in 1981 and 1987. A f u l l report on the Champion­ship w i l l appear next i s s u e .

Stubberud q u a l i f i e d for the playoff with his undefeated 4-1 score in the Montana Open, placing f i r s t on tie-breaks over Paul Motta, B i l l tynch and Phil Heikkinen. The cross-table from that tournament along with selected games appears on page 2. Note especially the f i n a l position in Stubberud-Loy from Round 5. Kip was able to calmly accept Jim's resignation and sign the scoresheets before showing Jim that ...Rxg7+ wins for Black! Study and hard work are necessary, but a l i t t l e b i t of good fortune never hurts!

MOTTA GETS LEG UP ON GRAND PRIX WITH BOZEMAN OPEN WIN

Paul Motta placed f i r s t in a small but very strong tournament in Bozeman in June. Ron Matous made a bid for f i r s t on day one with wins over Zygmond Mayer and Phi l Heikkinen, but then f e l l to Paul and Kip Stubberud on Sunday. Motta had to work hard, with a l l of hi s gaines going past 40 moves. Stubberud fir^LsUca sLiuufe uo Lake second with 3-2. The f i n a l standings and some game scores are on page 3. The contest between Mayer and Stub­berud i n round 2 i s an example of a "fighting draw" - look i t over.

WYOMING / MONTANA MATCH SCHEDULED

The inaugural match between Montana and Wyoming w i l l be played in West Yellowstone in September. MCA President Paul Motta after discussions with other MCA o f f i c e r s decided to view the Montana Open fis a " q u a l i f i e r " , and i n v i t e players from each c l a s s who did well there. Alternates w i l l be chosen i f these players are unavailable for the team of 10-14 players which Wyoming hopes to match. Arrangement d e t a i l s are on page 4.

POSTAL CHAMPIONSHIP NEARING CONCLUSION

The 1989-90 Montana Postal Championship i s winding down with j u s t 7 games of 36 s t i l l i n progress. Paul Motta has completed h i s games and leads with 5^-1^, while B i l l Lynch has a 4 W score with 2 games remaining „ The 1990-91 Fc-stal w i l l begin in September -see page four for d e t a i l s .
