Phil Heikkinen, who scored the lone win over Kip, finished one half point back after losing a hard game to Paul Motta in the final round. Motta, who had to be favored going into the competition due to his marvelous string of successes in the past year, had to set- tle for third place with a 3-2 score after losing with the Black pieces to both Kip and last year's Champion Mike Jensen. Jensen placed fourth with 2^-2^ while Bill Lynch (H) and Ron Erickso (^) trailed, Stubberud regained the title which he previosly held out- right in 1980, and in three way ties in 1981 and 1987. A full report on the Champion- ship will appear next issue. Stubberud qualified for the playoff with his undefeated 4-1 score in the Montana Open, placing first on tie-breaks over Paul Motta, Bill tynch and Phil Heikkinen. The cross- table from that tournament along with selected games appears on page 2. Note especially the final position in Stubberud-Loy from Round 5. Kip was able to calmly accept Jim's resignation and sign the scoresheets before showing Jim that ...Rxg7+ wins for Black! Study and hard work are necessary, but a little bit of good fortune never hurts! MCA President Paul Motta after discussions with other MCA officers decided to view the Montana Open fis a "qualifier", and invite players from each class who did well there. Alternates will be chosen if these players are unavailable for the team of 10-14 players which Wyoming hopes to match. Arrangement details are on page 4.
