Klamath Falls, Ore. – The Fremont-Winema National Forest will join National Forest recreation areas across the nation to waive fees at all Day-Use Fee sites June 2, National Trails Day and June 9, National Get Outdoors Day. Of the 2.3 million acres of land managed by the Forest, only one site (excluding Lake of the Woods) requires a Day-Use Fee; Mt. McLoughlin Trailhead. This area will open on Sunday, June 3. The fee waiver will apply to visitors on Saturday, June 9. Areas that accept the Northwest Forest Pass, Interagency Annual Pass, Interagency Senior Pass, Interagency Access Pass, Golden Age, or Golden Access Passport, will also waive their Day-Use Fees. The public is invited to get out and enjoy the Forest which offers plenty of recreational opportunities including fishing, hunting, boating, skiing, camping, biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. Big game, such as mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, and pronghorn antelope, as well as large predators, such as black bears, mountain lions, and bobcats, also live in the Forest. Lakeview, Ore. -The Fremont-Winema National Forest (FS) and Bureau of Land Management Lakeview District (BLM) are seeking volunteers for their annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event that will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012. This event will take place on the Crane Mountain National Recreation Trail #161, starting at Rogger Meadow, located just eight miles east of Lakeview, Ore. The project will involve clearing encroaching brush on portions of the trail and making erosion barriers. All participants will be provided lunch free of charge, given a complimentary NPLD t-shirt and a free National Public Lands Day pass for any entrance fee or day use fee area managed by BLM, National Park Service, FS, US Fish and Wildlife Service or US Army Corps of Engineers. If you are in the Lakeview area and interested in participating in this effort, please arrive at the Lakeview Interagency Office, 1301 South G Street, by 7:45 a.m. on the morning of the event. All participants will then be transported to the trail project site where additional information and a safety briefing will take place. Participants under the age of 18 will need their parent or guardian’s signed approval at the time of check-in between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. June 16. For volunteers’ safety and comfort, all participants are asked to wear layered t-shirts, a sweatshirt or medium weight jacket, long pants/jeans, sturdy shoes or boots, wide-brimmed hat, work gloves (will be provided for those without leather gloves) and use sunscreen and insect repellant. Klamath Falls, Ore. – The public is invited to participate in two interpretive canoe tours, Saturday June 2 and June 9, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. These free, guided trips are being hosted by the Fremont-Winema National Forest. All ages are welcome to attend. Both tours are approximately 2.5 miles on Upper Klamath Lake and will head south to Pelican Bay, north up Crystal Creek to Wocus Cut, then back to the Rocky Point Boat Launch. Your Forest Service tour guide will paddle along with you while sharing some of this area’s rich history, including use by native people, logging, farming, famous visitors and lodges of which few structures remain. This portion of the Upper Klamath Lake also provides rich habitat for many plants, birds and other wildlife. You must supply a kayak or canoe. Canoes may be rented at the Rocky Point Resort. Advance boat reservation is highly recommended. Call the resort for information on rates and availability at (541) 356-2287. If using your own boat, you must supply your own life vest, whistle and Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Permit (AISPP). AISPP’s are available from any Oregon hunting and fishing sales outlet. For more information on the AISPP and an opportunity to obtain one by mail visit the Web at: http://www.oregon.gov/OSMB/news/2012-2/12AISPP.pdf?ga=t It is recommended that you bring plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, lip balm, sunglasses, binoculars and snacks. Dressing in layers, including a rain jacket, works best due to the temperature variations that tour participants may experience throughout the tour. If you are interested in attending one of these canoe trips, reservations are appreciated. Please call the Klamath Ranger District at (541) 885-3400. These tours are weather dependent. So, if the weather is bad, i.e. heavy rain and wind or lightning, tours will be cancelled. Meet the Forest Service guide at the Rocky Point Public Boat Launch at 9 a.m. The boat launch is located 30 minutes west of Klamath Falls off of Highway (Hwy) 140 on the Westside Road. No fee is required to park at the boat launch.
Nicky Biehn slices and polishes interesting rocks, and then paints them with a scene from nature. These small works of art are perfect gems to add to your home, or to give as a gift. Nicky grew up and has lived her life in various places in Washington, Oregon, and California settling in Klamath Falls in 1995. She is a self-taught artist. Much of her inspiration comes from her childhood where she lived on 120 acres with a pond and a lake, and so watched wildlife and nature everyday. She attempts to paint as realistic as possible, considering regional and season changes to reflect real life. Her goal, like most every artist is to improve her techniques and be a better painter. She enjoys all aspects of life and her goal is to portray that in her art. Recently Nicky has begun to add beaded jewelry to her list of accomplishments, and is continuing with her love of wildlife to include many birds and animals in her beading.
The following wildflower field trips are sponsored by the Klamath Basin Chapter of the Native Plant Society, Klamath County Museum, Fremont-Winema National Forest, and Crater Lake National Park. For all trips it is recommended that you bring sturdy shoes or boots, plenty of water, sun screen and/or a hat, and a lunch. Be prepared for mosquitoes at most sites. Just before the Jeld-Wen plant, turn right into a big dirt road junction with lots of parking for people who want to carpool. We'll meet there at 9 am. From there, we will continue up the left fork of the road, which is FS 9715 (gravel). Two miles up the road is a cattle guard and just past that, turn right on FS 9713 (also gravel but narrower). The gravel ends about 0.8 miles up the road. Keep going about 0.1 miles where there is a side road on the left. Park there and we will walk a short distance to the meadow. Telephone Flat is a complex habitat, with wet and dry meadows, sagebrush shrublands, aspen groves, and conifer forest. June 23 Hike above Moore Park 8:30 am-11:30 am led by Sarah Malaby Meet at the Eualona trailhead off of Cypress Ave. above the old Riverside School. At the west end of Main Street, continue west up N. Carroll Street then turn right onto Cypress. The trailhead is a short distance up Cypress on the right. This will be an approximately 3 mile hike with some elevation gain on unmaintained trails. We will see a diversity of plants and great views in all directions as we hike through juniper shrublands, mountain mahogany thickets, mixed conifer forest, and scablands. July 7 Marin’s Dairy 9 am led by Vicky Liskey We will meet at the Midland rest stop at 9:00 AM and car pool from there. This area is west of highway 97 between Dorris and MacDole. It is easy access from our cars. Bring a lunch and call me to let me know how many might be going. Open to any one. 541-891-7019 or e-mail [email protected] July 14 Short Creek Area 9 am-noon led by Missy Anderson Meet at Sevenmile guard station, which is near Sevenmile Creek, at the junction of Nicholson Road and Forest Roads 3200/3100. To get there go to Fort Klamath, turn west onto Nicholson Road and go 4 miles, until you reach FS land, then turn right (north) onto FS Rd. 3200. We will follow Short Creek, heading south along FS Rd. 3100 and ending up on the Westside Rd. There will be some walking off-trail for short distances. Of course mosquito repellant will likely be needed! July 21 Dry Creek 9 am-noon, led by Sarah Malaby Meet at the Great Meadows Sno-park at 9 am. The Sno-Park is off Highway 140 approximately 30 miles west of Klamath Falls, near the Dead Indian Memorial Road junction. From there, we will caravan to the field trip site at Forest Road 3640-020. The trip will consist of approximately 1 mile of easy walking on the Dry Creek Snowmobile Trail. We did this trip last year and not many people came, but it is a great area to view forest wildflowers, so we are giving people a second chance to attend. August 4 4-Mile Lake Area 9 am-noon led by Missy Anderson Meet at the junction of Highway 140 and FS Rd 3661 (this is the road to 4-Mile Lake, about ½ mile before MP 35). We will mainly be exploring the interesting riparian and boggy habitat around Bull Swamp. There are no trails through this area and walking will be moderate to difficult in places (e.g. climbing over downed logs and through wet areas, etc). Rubber boots/waders (or shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy) are recommended. Mosquitoes are expected, so bug spray/net would be good too.
August 18 Crater Lake Garfield Peak Trail 9 am to noon led by Jen Beck Meet near the east end of the Crater Lake Lodge at Rim Village. Hike is 3.4 miles round trip and a strenuous climb (1000' elevation gain) to the summit of Garfield Peak along the Crater Lake rim. Please note that participants will need to pay a $10 entrance fee or have a park pass.
Want to grow your own food but not sure where to start? O.S.U. Extension Service is offering a 5-part series, on how to grow and preserve foods in high desert climates found in the Klamath Basin. Classes will be held at the Klamath County Extension Auditorium, 3328 Vandenberg Road. Instructors include horticulturist, Darrin Culp, Dietitian, Patty Case, and trained volunteers. It is likely, that if you are the victim of a crime, that the Sheriff’s Department will not respond. This is because the Sheriff’s Department is underfunded and understaffed, and not able to respond to crimes unless lives are in danger. But still, crimes need to be reported! They need to be tracked, and sometimes patterns can be figured out that might help apprehend a criminal. Crimes can be reported immediately online, and it is possible to get a print out of your report to have on hand. How to sign up for Food Items
If you need commodities and think that you might be eligible to receive foods at the Food Pantry, please drop by on the 4th Wednesday of the month between 10 am and 1pm to sign up. We are here to help those in our community who are struggling financially and although our supplies are limited, we are here to serve our community.
How to Donate to the Food Pantry:
Drop-off times at the Food Pantry, opposite Kirchers: Between 2PM and 3PM on the Monday before the 4th Wednesday in the month or on the 4th Wednesday in the month at 9.30 AM.
Non-perishable food items are always needed and can be deposited in donation barrels around town. They are at Kirchers, The Table, Chiloquin Community Church and the Community Center. More barrels will be placed during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
Toilet paper and other personal items are always appreciated.
Monetary donations can be put in Collection Boxes located at: Family Foods, the Library, Kirchers, Clyde’s Market, The Table and the Williamson River Christian Fellowship.
Checks: The Food Pantry is a non-profit organization and checks should be made out to “Chiloquin Care Program” and deposited in the collection boxes in town or brought to the Food Pantry. Receipts will be issued. Checks made out to the Klamath/Lake Counties Food Bank need to be ear-marked for the Chiloquin Food Pantry or Chiloquin Care Program in order for us to be benefited by the donations.
Donations of Produce: If you have an over-abundance of produce in your garden, we are happy to distribute them.
How to Volunteer at the Chiloquin Food Pantry
Volunteers are always needed to assist with stacking commodities coming from Klamath Falls on the Monday before the 4th Wednesday in the month at 1.30pm for approximately 1 hour, and for distribution on the 4th Wednesday of the month between 9.30 am and 1 pm.
If you can volunteer to help out at fund raisers, please contact us.
If you wish to submit ideas or just be an on-looker, join us at an open Board meeting at the Chiloquin Food Pantry at 7pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. You will be welcomed.

Chiloquin Garden Club Finished for this season, the Garden Club meets once a month on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 3:00, April through September. Our first meeting is held at the library but as the season progresses we meet at member's homes or other places of interest. Meeting sites will be posted at the library. Anyone interested in attending is welcome. The Chiloquin area presents unique challenges with varying types of soil and weather conditions. Basic gardening and current information is available, such as how to identify native and drought resistant plants and use them in landscaping, how to prepare the soil, where to order plants and buy seeds that will grow here. Klamath Humane Society – volunteers needed at the Humane Society. We are getting started on our disaster program and need volunteers in the Chiloquin area. Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) – a statewide program working with children K-3 during school hours. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a child for ½ hour, helping them read (or reading to the youngest). Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Storytime: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. Story time is at Thursday 2:30 PM during the school year. 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 783-3315.
Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects.
