WELCOME TO GRACE LUTHERAN as we gather for worship of our loving God, who spared not His own Son, but put Him upon the cross in payment for our sins. May all that we give and receive this day resound to His honor and glory.

THE ORDER OF DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE + In Nomine Jesu +

THE PRELUDE THE HYMN OF PRAISE “Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus” # 685

1. Let us ever walk with Jesus, Follow His example pure, Through a world that would deceive us And to sin our spirits lure. Onward in His footsteps treading, Pilgrims here, our home above, Full of faith and hope and love, Let us do the Father’s bidding. Faithful Lord, with me abide; I shall follow where You guide.

2. Let us suffer here with Jesus And with patience bear our cross. Joy will follow all our sadness; Where He is, there is no loss. Though today we sow no laughter, We shall reap celestial joy; All discomforts that annoy Shall give way to mirth here after. Jesus, here I share Your woe; Help me there Your joy to know.

3. Let us gladly die with Jesus. Since by death He conquered death, He will free us from destruction, Give to us immortal breath. Let us mortify all passion That would lead us into sin; And the grave that shuts us in Shall but prove the gate to heaven. Jesus, here with You I die, There to live with You on high.

4. Let us also live with Jesus. He has risen from the dead That to life we may awaken. Jesus, You are now our head. We are Your own living members; Where You live, there we shall be In Your presence constantly, Living there with You forever. Jesus, let me faithful be, Life eternal Grant to me.

THE DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE (Left Column) page 151 The Invocation – Confession – Absolution P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Page 3: JUNE 28, 2020 The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost · 6/28/2020  · This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire, Oh, may Thy Love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. The Introit (Psalm 89:15-18; Antiphon: Psalm 89:1) P: I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD forever; C: With my mouth I will make known Your faithfulness to all generations. P: Blessed are the people who know the festal shout C: Who walk, O LORD, in the light of Your face. P: Who exult in Your name all the day C: And in Your righteousness are exalted. P: For our shield belongs to the LORD, C: Our king to the Holy One of Israel. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen. P: I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD forever; C: With my mouth I will make known Your faithfulness to all generations. The Kyrie - This Is the Feast P: In peace let us pray to the Lord. C: (sung) Lord have mercy. P: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. C: (sung) Lord have mercy. The Lessons and Responses page 156-157 THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Jeremiah 28:5-9 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who stood in the house of the LORD, and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! The LORD do so; the LORD perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring back the vessels of the LORD’s house and all who were carried away captive, from Babylon to this place. Nevertheless hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms—of war and disaster and pestilence. As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the LORD has truly sent.” P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 7:1-13 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse All: (sung) Alleluia. Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Alleluia. P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter. C: (sung) Glory to You, O Lord. THE GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 10:34-42 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose

Page 6: JUNE 28, 2020 The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost · 6/28/2020  · This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire, Oh, may Thy Love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like

it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.” P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. THE HYMN OF THE DAY “The Law of God Is Good and Wise” # 579

1. The Law of God is good and wise And sets His will before our eyes, Shows us the way of righteousness, And dooms to death when we transgress.

2. Its light of holiness imparts The knowledge of our sinful hearts That we may see our lost estate And turn from sin before too late.

3. To those who help in Christ have found And would in works of love abound It shows what deeds are His delight And should be done as good and right.

4. But those who scornfully disdain God’s Law shall then in sin remain; Its terror in their ear resounds And keeps their wickedness in bounds.

5. The Law is good; but since the fall Its holiness condemns us all; It dooms us for our sin to die And has no pow’r to justify.

6. To Jesus we for refuge flee, Who from the curse has set us free, And humbly worship at His throne, Saved by His grace through faith alone.

THE SERMON Matthew 10:34-42

“He Brings A Sword” - Pastor Ogrodowicz The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And

Page 7: JUNE 28, 2020 The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost · 6/28/2020  · This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire, Oh, may Thy Love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like

the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and Apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayer of the Church At the conclusion of each petition is the following versicle and response: P: Lord in Your mercy: C: Hear our prayer. THE SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT The Sacrament of the Altar will be celebrated today. Grace Lutheran practices closed communion, for God's Word teaches and we believe that communicants receive the very body and the very blood of Jesus in, with, and under the bread and wine. God's Word also teaches and we believe that one who eats and drinks while denying the real presence and the benefits and blessings of the Sacrament, eats and drinks judgment upon himself. As the Christian Church is charged with the responsibility of "stewardship of the mysteries of God," we therefore ask that all who are not communicant members of Grace Lutheran please speak with one of our Pastors before communing. Our Pastors will assist you in becoming a communicant member through instruction in all the articles of faith, give you opportunity to publicly confirm your faith, and shepherd you as a member in good standing of this congregation. Those guests, who are members in good stead of a sister Missouri Synod congregation and have previously spoken to our Pastors, need only sign a communion card, which is located in the pew. We trust that all will respect God's Word and our practice in accordance with its teachings. The Preface – Sanctus - Prayer of Thanksgiving – The Lord’s Prayer P: The Lord be with you. C: (sung) And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: (sung) We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: (sung) It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Page 8: JUNE 28, 2020 The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost · 6/28/2020  · This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire, Oh, may Thy Love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary…..evermore praising You and saying: All: (sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord God of pow’r and might: Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth….one God, now and forever. C: Amen. P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Our Lord -The Pax Domini – Agnus Dei P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. All: (sung) Lamb of God You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace. The Distribution

The communicants shall file forward as they are ushered out of their pew in a single line to receive the body and blood of Christ given and shed for our sins. Please keep an appropriate distance from the communicant in front of you. Empty glasses should be placed in the waste receptacle at the end of the communion rail and then communicants may return to their pew. The Pastor shall pronounce the dismissal when the entire distribution has concluded. THE DISTRIBUTION HYMN “The Death of Jesus Christ, Our Lord” # 634

1. The death of Jesus Christ, our Lord, We celebrate with one accord; It is our comfort in distress, Our heart’s sweet joy and happiness.

Page 9: JUNE 28, 2020 The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost · 6/28/2020  · This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire, Oh, may Thy Love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like

2. He blotted out with His own blood The judgment that against us stood; For us He full atonement made, And all our debt He fully paid.

3. That this forever true shall be He gives a solemn guarantee: In this His holy Supper here We taste His love so sweet, so near.

4. His Word proclaims and we believe That in this Supper we receive His very body, as He said, His very blood for sinners shed.

5. We dare not ask how this can be, But simply hold the mystery And trust this word where life begins: “Given and shed for all your sins.”

6. They who this word do not believe This food unworthily receive, Salvation here will never find – May we this warning keep in mind!

7. But blest is each believing guest Who in these promises finds rest; For Jesus shall in love remain With all who here His grace obtain.

8. Help us sincerely to believe That we may worthily receive Your supper and in You find rest. Amen! They who believe are blest.

The Post-Communion Canticle – Collect – Benediction All: (sung) Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell ev’ryone what He has done. Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name. He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy with shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia. P: Let us pray. We give thanks…..one God, now and forever. C: (sung) Amen. P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and + give you peace. C: (sung) Amen. THE CLOSING HYMN “Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me” # 683

1. Jesus, Thy boundless love to me No thought can reach, no tongue declare; Unite my thankful heart to Thee, And reign without a rival there! Thine wholly, Thine alone I am; Be Thou alone my constant flame.

2. O grant that nothing in my soul May dwell, but Thy pure love alone; Oh, may Thy love possess me whole, My joy, my treasure, and my crown! All coldness from my heart remove; My ev’ry act, word, thought be love.

Page 10: JUNE 28, 2020 The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost · 6/28/2020  · This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire, Oh, may Thy Love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like

3. This love unwearied I pursue And dauntlessly to Thee aspire, Oh, may Thy Love my hope renew, Burn in my soul like heav’nly fire! And day and night, Be all my care To guard this sacred treasure there.

4. In suff’ring be Thy love my peace, In weakness be Thy love my pow’r; And when the storms of life shall cease, O Jesus, in that final hour, Be Thou my rod and staff and guide, And draw me safely to Thy side!

THE POSTLUDE

++++++ Weekly Wisdom from the Church Fathers: “The great corruption of people is that they act according to the desires of their heart and the judgment of their natural reason.” Dr. C.F.W. Walther, “God Grant It”, pages 412-413. Beloved members of Grace, just a gentle reminder not to relax our responsibilities under the State reopening plan: Texas has allowed more attendance for worship gatherings but our seating in church still needs to follow the plan posted. Remember that pews marked with blue tape are marked for seating on the ends. Pews with no marks are set aside for seating in the middle. Masks are optional but recommended. As Christians, we continue to care for our neighbor as best we can while at the same time respecting our neighbor’s freedom in the Gospel. Nothing is more important than God’s Word and Sacrament. It is our eternal health and salvation. LCMS Stewardship Ministry: Matthew 10:42 – “And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” The tithes and offerings you give to the Lord’s work in His church go to supporting all manner of discipleship. They provide for a minister of the Gospel to preach, teach, and conduct the Sacraments. They provide for our missionaries and ministries of mercy here and abroad and they make sure that the folks in your area have a place to go to worship the Lord. The Lord is pleased with this work and He wants to bless you through supporting it. The Altar Flowers are given today to the glory of God by Wm. and Sue Krueger in honor of their 48th wedding anniversary and in thankfulness for God’s many blessings. The Krueger’s are using flowers belonging to the Altar Guild. A contribution will be made in lieu of the cost of flowers. Today’s Radio Broadcast has been sponsored by Jimmie Deane Cox to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for the many blessings He has bestowed on her family. The broadcast can be heard each Sunday at 12:30 p.m. over KWHI 1280 AM.

You Have a Place at Grace – June 28, 2020 Treasure “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” - Matthew 6:19-20 In this sinful world everyday, everything is at risk. The corrosive nature of sin’s hovering clouds destroys the things we possess. The corrupt hearts of those who know no righteousness seek to fatten their own pockets and fulfill their desires with no regard for others. Jesus reminds us that this is the way of the sinful world: rust, moths, and thieves. God allows His very blessings to be under assault in this way because of man’s sin. It is part of the curse…”cursed is the ground because of you. It will bring forth thorns and thistles and in the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread all the days of your life.” Yet, man is still enticed by this world and by the devil to love the things of this world more than God. Jesus gives us sage advice. If your treasure is here on earth, just know it will be destroyed. The treasure of heaven is the only thing eternal and incorruptible. Focus your heart and mind there. Lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, not on earth. In a time, such as now, when fear runs rampant in our world, we have another golden opportunity to focus our selves on Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith. We do realize how precious the earthly blessings are that we possess from God. Health and life itself rise to the top of that list. Security through the possessions we have acquired is right up there also. All these things are under attack. In a short period of time, it all disappears. Lutherans remember singing with great gusto: “And take they our life, goods, fame, child, and wife. Though these all be gone they yet have nothing won. The kingdom ours remaineth.” The Word of our Lord and the hymn of Luther ring ever true. Our treasure is in the kingdom of heaven. Most important is the eternal welfare of your body and soul. In Christ, we have the true treasure of forgiveness, life, and salvation. If the things of this world become more important than Him, what then shall our end be? As Jesus once questioned His disciples: “What profit shall it be if a man gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” God has prepared us for times like these. He has called us to be His own in baptism. He sustains us by His Word and Sacrament. He has prepared a place for us with Him in heaven. Let us be His witnesses to the world standing firm in these troubled times. Christ alone is our salvation. Christ alone is our treasure.
