We Talk About What We Love

by Rico Tice (desiringgod.org)

adapted

“I am constantly struggling to keep the Lord Jesus at the center of my heart …

unless I do I know I will not speak about him.”

Do you have moments in life you wish you could rewind and do things

differently? For me, the thing I most regret is what happened before my

grandmother’s death; or rather what didn’t happen.

My grandmother died absolutely convinced that God would accept her because

she was a good person. She had no faith in Christ. I regret that in the weeks before

her death I did not speak to her about Jesus. I tried to love her well, but didn’t say

anything to her about Jesus. When my other grandmother had died, I’d taken her

hand and prayed with her. But not this grandmother; I just let her go.

Why didn’t I tell her about Jesus? I’ve come to realize that I was afraid; afraid of

what she’d say, and of what my family would say, because I feared they’d think it

was inappropriate and not helpful. I was just afraid.

I loved my grandmother, but the hard truth is that I loved myself more than her. I

wanted my family to think well of me more than I wanted her to think of Christ as

her Savior.

And that means that my family’s respect had become an “idol” to me. When it

came down to the hard truth; I wanted my family to accept me more than I wanted

to bring Jesus to my grandmother. I was so afraid of losing that acceptance that I

kept my mouth shut.

Becoming a Christian doesn’t automatically or immediately remove all of the

“idols” from our heats. Seeking or craving approval from someone or something

other than our loving God is idolatry. I am constantly struggling to keep the Lord

Jesus at the center of my heart, to find my identity and assurance and purpose and

satisfaction in him.

Unless I do, I will not speak about him. After all, we talk about what we love. So

for as long as Jesus is not my greatest love, I will keep quiet about him because I

am afraid of losing my greatest love. Suppressing the truth about Christ is the

byproduct of placing a high value on created things, and our fear of losing them.

The

(continuation)

We need to ask ourselves, so what does my heart

find easier to love than Jesus? What stops me from

obeying God by speaking of his Son?

If we’re to share Christ, we need to ask the God to

go to work in our hearts so that he’ll displace our

“idols” and we won’t be regretting, once it’s too

late, who we didn’t talk to about him.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We wish to extend our appreciation to all

that have contributed to the “Pearl for a Great

Price Campaign,” to raise 1.3 million dollars to

purchase the land for the church of Christ at Pearl

Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. God has blessed the

church at Pearl Harbor so much.

On May 1, 2015, we reached the one year

mark left in this campaign and as of date of this

letter, we have raised $827,001.00 The members of

this congregation have contributed $438,277.00

and those of you around the world have

contributed so generously, $388,724.00 for a total

of $827,001.00.

God has blessed us so much. We are

inspired and motivated by the out-pouring of love

we have received from those around the world,

like you, and will continue to strive toward the

ultimate goal before us. We have logged each and

every contribution and have kept a strict, but

private, accounting of each donation.

As we continue toward our final deadline

of May1, 2016, we ask you to continue to keep us

in your prayers and continue to give glory to God

for what he has allowed us to accomplish in trying

to maintain this valued landmark that has been a

home to thousands of Christians over many years.

We are still in need of monetary help and

if you can help with this, please send to: Church of

Christ at Pearl Harbor, 515 Main Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96818 or if you have any

questions/concerns, contact us at: 808-422-7033 or

[email protected]

As we say in Hawaii, “Mahalo Nui Loa,” which

means, “thank you very much!”

TAKE TIME TO LOVE…

A moment spent to share a smile

Or go that extra special mile,

To hug a child or greet a friend

Or care enough to stop and send

A cheerful thought to someone dear

To ease a sorrow, dry a tear,

Will bring God’s blessing from above

When we but take the time to love.
