The council chambers at the Town offices were packed at the June 15 regular council meeting, as many residents came to speak about re-opening the Strath-more Youth Centre in the wake of the death of 15-year-old Jonathan Herrmann. A presentation was given about why the youth centre should be re-opened and the ways it can help benefit teens in the community.

“Everybody in this town would benefit from some-thing that’s structured, has planning, and has some type of value to kids that gives them value,” said Paula Beek-man, with Strathmore for Youth.

Strathmore for Youth outlined who they are, and what they would like to see happen. One of the biggest concerns is where do the kids go after they turn 12. Beekman said the critical hours for youth between ages 12 to 17 is between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

They would like to take some of the troubled youth away from the negative and bring them into the posi-tive, and would like to see a safe place set up with counselors for youth to be able to talk to if they want to.

“It takes a community to raise a child and there’s a big group of children that need, and we’re a big com-munity. We all need to help raise these kids because it’s not one persons responsibility, it’s everybody’s,” said Courtney Herasemluk with Strathmore for Youth.

Brenda Herrmann, Jonathan’s mother, spoke to coun-cil and said the skateboard park is kind of like Central Perk from the show Friends. It is a place where many of the youth will go to speak about all the things going on in their life, from homework to relationships.

“When my husband and I were invited to his memo-rial where they released all the balloons, the first thing I noticed was the windows are broken and there was graffiti on the skateboard park. It was almost like a message that no adult cared, it was like the adults re-ally didn’t care about what the kids were doing because no adults were there, it was just the teens and that’s it,” said Herrmann.

“That message was sent to all the teens like, no adults care about us, they don’t care about how we feel, what we say and where we go because the damage was al-ready there and that was it.”

In their grief they also wrote their goodbyes, and Her-rmann said they weren’t thinking graffiti. They were thinking love, they were writing their love for their son.

“I don’t want to wait one more day for the youth cen-tre to get moving,” said Councillor Bob Sobol.

Sobol moved that council approve the lease agree-ment between the town and the Youth Club of Strath-more to re-open the Strathmore Youth Centre, located at 170 Brent Blvd. Edward Herrmann, Jonathan’s father, said that he knows the kids will help come clean up, and get the building ready for future programming.

Residential irrigation to remain closed for 2011Shannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The issue of residential irrigation was added to the agenda at the June 15 regular council meeting. Sign up for the 2011 irrigation season was much lower than council was hoping for. Only 39 users paid the $200 fee to keep the system run-ning, falling far short of the potential users.

For the $80,000 operational cost to be shared among the users, it would cost each of the 39 residents $2,000.

Mayor Steve Grajczyk said he thinks users may have been confused as to what the costs per household were going to be, whether it was $100 or $200 they were being asked to pay. He said if council were to say yes to start the system back for 2011, more residents would sign up.

“I think it’s a sad day for Strathmore that we don’t have more people interested in this valuable service that we have here to offer, but if there’s nobody interested in using it, then what’s the point of starting it up again?” said Councillor John Rempel

“I’m not saying that we should just shut it down and say we’re done with irrigation. I still believe that irrigation should be an option that we could look at. If we don’t need it this year, we might need it next year,” said Councillor John Rempel.

After two defeated motions, council took a short recess before coming back with their final motion for the evening.

The final motion, made by Councillor Dave Hamilton, was to not reinstate residential irrigation for the 2011 season, but that it would be brought forward in the fall workshop for discussion for any further budgeting for 2012

Council voted unanimously in favour of the final motion.

Crosswalk lights Council debated relocating the crosswalk lights located just

east of Thomas Drive, to the intersection of Thomas Drive and Brent Blvd, due to the number of pedestrian incidents which have occurred.

The cost to relocate the lights would be $35,000, and the main reason for the request was to try to get the students coming from the schools along Brent Blvd to cross the street properly, the crosswalk. making things safer for the kids, and drivers.

Many of council didn’t feel that moving the lights were go-ing to make a difference. Councillor Dave Hamilton made a motion for two additional stop signs to be put up at Thomas Drive and Brent Blvd for the fall, prior to the beginning of the school year for a school year trial. While this didn’t sat-isfy all of council, the motion passed with only councillors Earl Best and Pat Fule voting against it.

Youth Club signs lease agreement with townShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

After the unexpected tragic death of Strathmore teen Jonathan Herrmann, a community outcry was made to town

officials to re-open the Strathmore Youth Centre and allow programming for all of Strathmore’s youth to become available.

With the support of the Western Regional office of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, the Strathmore Advi-sory Committee created the Youth Club of Strathmore.

After the June 15 Town Council meet-ing, a lease agreement has been signed between the Town and the Youth Club of Strathmore. Work has already begun to tidy up the youth centre to prepare for future programming.

“We believe the youth of Strathmore need a safe place to engage in healthy activities that will help them develop, and fulfill their potential. We are dedi-cated to helping make that happen,” said Karen MacDonald, Executive Di-rector, Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie, in a press release.

“The Youth Club of Strathmore is go-ing to need the support of local resi-dents, businesses and funders to assist with the start-up and ongoing operat-ing costs of the youth centre, so that the community can prevent another tragic death like Jonathan’s from ever happening again.”

The Boys and Girls Club of Aird-

rie-Strathmore Club hadve been part of Strathmore since 2010, providing after-school, leadership and summer programs to children six-years-old to 13-years-old under the governance of the Airdrie club.

The Strathmore club came to town at the request of citizens who were con-cerned about the lack of structured programs available to children in town.

After reviewing last year’s operations, the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie and the Strathmore Advisory Committee de-termined it would be in the best inter-est of both parties if Strathmore were to apply as an independent BGC.

Currently the Youth Club of Strath-more has begun the process of becom-ing a member organization of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, which could take up to a year.

In the interim the Youth Club of Strathmore will begin providing pro-grams at the youth centre, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada and Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie will con-tinue to work with them. When all of the requirements have been met and approved by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, the Youth Club will then be able to legally operate as the Boys and Girls Club of Strathmore.

The fourth annual World Chicken Dance Championships took part during Blackfoot Crossing Fest on June 18 at the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park. There were a variety of activities for the kids, including face painting, tipi building, drum making and learning how to make dream catchers. Contestants came from all over to take part in the championships, and when the rain became too much the event was taken into the interpretive centre. After the devastation that took place at Slave Lake, people from all over have been trying to find a way to help and show their support. In Strathmore, many residents and different groups have been doing what they can, and re-cently members of the Strathmore Unit-ed Church sent tokens of their support to those in need.

“We had our luncheon, we had given all our quilts away and it was just (at) the time that the fire was on and people were having to be evacuated,” said Ruth

Radway, a member of the church and the ladies quilting group.

“I just said around the lunch table wouldn’t it be nice if we had some quilts to send to Slave Lake, and (they said) well why can’t we do some more. It just snowballed from there.”

On June 17 two volunteers, Russ Maudsley and Moose (David) Thomp-son from Calgary, gathered up the 51 quilts and three afghans to be donated to the residents of Slave Lake. The quilts and afghans were made by quilters from the Strathmore United Church, the Gladys United Church, and one was do-nated by the wife of temporary minister

Henry Friesen, out of High River. Enterprise Car Rental donated a ve-

hicle to use for the trip to Slave Lake and on June 18 the quilts and afghans were dropped off at St Peter’s Ecumeni-cal Church.

“They’ll be distributed as they (the church) see fit,” said Radway.

Radway said the church owes a big thank you to Enterprise, who loaned the vehicle to transport the quilts, and to Cotton and Candy who donated fab-ric for the quilts. She also said the two drivers who volunteered their time to make the trip deserve a thank you as well.

After watching her hus-band take matters into his own hands when it came to repairs around their shop and home, Prabhjot Sarao decided to nominate her husband Ajay Pal Singh for Canada’s Worst Handyman.

“My wife wants, me not to get hurt by my handyman work which I do at home and shop,” said Singh.

Singh and four others were picked to take part in Season 6, where they spent their time renovating a motel in Niagara Falls, Ont. The idea was to renovate and remodel a room to make it into a themed, ro-mantic honeymoon retreat.

“Yes, it is (exciting), it was fun. I met new people and had a good experience with TV. It’s easy to watch but it

takes lots of efforts to make (it on) TV,” said Singh.

“I’ve learned a lot in this show. So I can say that I am a good handyman now, but if I need some professional (help) I’ll hire,” said Singh.

Singh said the hardest things for him to work on were the heart-shaped tub. The things he had the most fun installing was the mir-rored ceiling and the break-fast table.

Singh did own Country Donair in Strathmore but has relocated to Drumheller after opening a restaurant there. The season finale for Season 6 took place on June 13, and there are photo’s on the Can-ada’s Worst Handyman Face-book page. While Singh was favoured to be the one voted Canada’s Worst Handyman, the title went to Charlene Hunt from Pickering, Ont.

Submitted by the Community Crisis soCiety, Wheatland shelter

The Community Crisis Society, Wheatland Shelter will be hosting their annual Kiddie Karnival in con-junction on Canada Day at Kinsmen Park on July 1 2011, 10 am to 2 pm. For one price ($5.00) each child can partake in a number of activities; from crafts to games; with face painting and balloon animals and prizes!! This is an event the staff at the shelter has organized for the past 12 years. It is a way to provide an opportunity for families in the community to have fun.

Funds raised will go towards programs for the shelter that are not presently funded.

The Community Crisis Society be-lieves that all individuals have the right to live without physical, sexual, emotional, and spiritual abuse or the threat of any of these. At the Shelter, adults and children are provided with support in a safe and confidential en-vironment where they can increase their self esteem, make decisions and put their plans into action. For more information about the Community Cri-sis Society and the Wheatland Shel-ter, please visit our website at http://wheatland.albertashelters.com.

Kiddie Karnival

The Community Crisis Society held their annual general meeting on June 20 at the Days inn. Brad Walls (board chair) ran the meeting along with executive director Karen Pease. The shelter saw a large increase in occupancy last year. Over the year, 197 adults and 137 children stayed with them. it is a challenge to keep up with the ever-rising numbers and it gets tougher to keep the community safe and informed. The dedicated staff are on 24/7 and are very excited about some new initiatives that have been in put into place. The crisis center does so much more for the community than most people know, last year they did eight community fairs and 175 school presentations, along with their community outreach program which included 114 women in need, up from 70 last year the shelter also are responsible for child counseling, public education, men’s addiction group in Drumheller and their newest campaign the Safe Community initiative. This new initiative is just waiting for RCmP clear-ance and then they will be the only crisis shelter that offers this help for families in need. The Family Violence Response representative will be the link between the crown attorney, RCmP, child welfare and many others.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and the number is determined experimentally indoors by exposing us to a light spectrum meant to mimic noontime sun. A sunscreen of SPF 15 will delay the onset of a sunburn, so in a person who would otherwise burn in 10 minutes would burn in 150 minutes, so the SPF 15 sunscreen allows a person to say out in the sun 15 times longer.

Put enough on - The recommended application for adequate protection is about 2 tbsp. per person per session (a handful). If you’ve been in the water, you will need to re-apply often. Even ‘waterproof’ sunscreens only last up to an hour, so keep it close. Someone may think they are applying SPF15, but if they don’t use the correct amount then it may only be equivalent to SPF8.

Re-apply - Perspiration, exercise, swimming and towel drying removes sunscreen from the skin so you should re-apply after taking part in any of these activities, even if the product is waterproof.

Budget brands - They are just as effective as the more expensive brands.

Apply correctly - Sunscreen should be applied to clean, dry skin 30 minutes before exposure to the sun, which allows it time to absorb properly.

Take a time out - Between 11am and 3pm when them sun is strongest, find a shady spot and give your skin a break, but still apply sun screen because sand, concrete and water can reflect harmful rays.

Everyday use - Sun lotions on your face and back of the hands will limit the chances of developing dry tough skin, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging and skin cancer. Don’t forget the back of your neck and ears too.

Cover up - Wear loose cotton clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.

Use a “broad spectrum” sunscreen - with a sun protection factor of at least SPF15 to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Overcast weather – We still require sunscreen on those cloudy days because 80 per cent of ultra-violet radiation is still present.

Children and babies need greater protection so use specially formulated kids ranges with gentler ingredients and higher SPFs.

The Chinook Credit Union made a generous donation to help the victims of the Slave Lake fire, when they presented $20,000 to the Canadian Red Cross for the Alberta Wildfires. Chinook Credit Union staff partici-pated in two “Slave Lake Casual Days,” by purchasing the option of wearing jeans and a red shirt to work, along with stickers identifying them as Slave Lake Supporters. Chinook would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the members and staff who participated in the fund-raiser, no matter the size of the contribution.

Offering a helping hand

To the EditorI am a homeowner from Green Meadows Crescent

and I am concerned with the replacement of the fence behind us with a post and cable barrier fence. I would like to see the current fence replaced by another wood fence (or equivalent). I can understand that you as a council decided to replace the fence with a less expensive alternative, but I would like to ask that you consider the other factors before letting this happen. My biggest concern is for the safety of the children and pets living along this fence. Many residents of Green Meadows Crescent do not have back fences as there are no yards, only parking pads. The post and cable barrier would leave small children and pets very vulnerable. If they were to run onto the street the outcome would be devastating. Vehicles drive notori-

ously fast and semi-trucks often park along this road decreasing the visibility. It is scary to think that there won’t be a better barrier between the traffic and our homes. Other concerns I have include decreased pri-vacy and increased noise.

I spoke with the head of the engineering and op-erations and he indicated that this decision was based on the cost associated with the replacement options. I thank you all for trying to be fiscally responsible, but there is a time and place for that. This is not one of those times.

Please reconsider your decision to replace this fence with the post and cable fence.

Thank you for your time. Kylie Joly,

Considering other factors is important

To the EditorAfter all the accusations against the provincial gov-

ernment in the health field, you would think that it would be hard to come up with another headliner. Well, never underestimate the ability of a dying re-gime to trip over itself.

We have witnessed the results of centralization and the attempt to control everything in Edmonton. These include the frustration of local primary health care staff due to minimal input and decision making at the local level as well as billion dollar deficits, billions spent on bloated bureaucracies and millions of dol-lars in bonuses. The recent resignation of the head of public health for south-east Alberta, (Dr. Clearsky) is a prime example of this exasperation.

To all this add the accusations of payoffs, firings and threats to medical professionals should they speak publically on the state of health care in the province and the refusal of the government to hold a public enquiry into the disaster.

The latest accusation comes from Dr. Stephen Duckett (aka the Cookie Monster), former head of the Health Super board. He indicated that the PC Govern-ment had a program in place that helped privileged members (i.e. friends of the government, including PC MLAs) queue jump the long lineups in the health care system.

As disgusting as this practice is, it ignores the real problem and that is why there are lineups in the first place. For the wealthy there is no line up. Those with money can go to B.C., Quebec or the U.S. to pay for surgery privately. The rest of us wait in the lineup that keeps growing and scratch our heads over the fact that the Government spends over 40 per cent of the budget on health care.

There is entrenched and very vibrant two-tier health care in Alberta – the first tier is for the rich and those connected to the Provincial Government.

How do we solve the line up issue and bring back the Alberta advantage that this government has squan-dered in a few short years? Hire more surgeons? Sorry,

this won’t accomplish anything.Surgeons are underutilized at present. There simply

is not enough “operating time” allocated to perform the surgeries that they are capable of. This is one rea-son why so many specialists want to work in both the private and public sector. They are not working at full capacity.

So you say, let’s build more hospitals and operat-ing rooms. Sorry once again. There are hundreds of thousands of square feet of empty hospital space that is simply costing us money to heat and clean.

The problem is that there is no money available to pay the specialists (and associated costs) to perform the surgeries. By the time this government pays the billions of dollars for thousands of bureaucrats and millions more in bonuses, there isn’t enough left. Al-berta Health Services rations the number of surgeries that can be performed and that is why we are waiting months for many procedures.

Other than the obvious need to decentralize and streamline the bureaucracy, there is another solution – allow health care funding to follow the patient. This is a practice followed in most European countries that have a universal health care system.

At the moment you and I are a cost when we show up at the hospital. The hospital has been allocated a certain amount of dollars regardless of delivery and all patients do is threaten the already tight budget. With dollars following the patient, hospitals must compete for patients as that is how the bulk of their funding will be received.

Billions of dollars are being wasted in a bloated control-oriented bureaucracy and in underutilized hospital space. Let’s put these billions in patient’s hands and put hospitals, public and private, in the position of welcoming or, heaven forbid, competing for patients.

On June 13, if you had driven in Hussar, you would have seen many students, parents, staff, and other volunteers working to clean up the hamlet. After the cleanup, everyone was welcome to come to the school for lunch. The Chinook Credit Union and the Sundowners were kind enough to donate a hotdog lunch with chips and veggies, followed by ice cream sandwiches. Kevin SorenSon, M.P., CrowfootParliamentary Report

The First Session of the 41st Parliament has opened up and our Conservative government is keeping the promises we made on the recent election campaign trail. I encourage everyone to read the Speech from the Throne (www.sft.gc.ca) that launches our plan to provide a strong, stable national government. As well, the Next Phase of Canada’s economic Action Plan (www.budget.gc.ca) is focused on the Canadi-an economy by supporting hard-working Canadians and their families and completing the economic re-covery. It is a low-tax plan for jobs and growth.

Statistics Canada says over 22,000 net new jobs were created in May. Over 560,000 net new jobs have been created since July 2009, with seven straight quarters of economic growth. We will keep taxes low. We are undertaking additional targeted invest-ments to support jobs and growth; improving the quality of life of seniors, families and children; and we will be tightly controlling government spending to stay on track to eliminate the annual federal bud-getary deficit.

In my speech in the House of Commons on the Budget Implementation Act, I said that at a time when budgets are tight, the constituents I represent believe that taxpayers should not be burdened with an annual $27 million per vote subsidy for politi-cal parties. Our position concerning this subsidy has been well known for some time now and that is why we included it in our election campaign and will follow through on our commitment to eliminate the per-vote subsidy and keep corporate and union donations out of our political system.

One of the best good news stories for our con-

stituency is the Throne Speech’s pledge: “Our gov-ernment will act on its promise to introduce legis-lation to end the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry.”

I have again been appointed by the Prime Minister to be a member of the Standing Committee on Pub-lic Safety and National Security and my colleagues have already told me they will elect me to be the Chair.

I predict that dismantling the failed and costly long-gun registry will be one of the first items be-fore our committee. Over my tenure as your Mem-ber of Parliament, this single issue is the one I have heard about the most from my constituents. I will do everything I can as the Chair to ensure swift pas-sage of the pending bill that will rid us of this ‘tax’ imposed by ‘urban Liberals’ on Canadians living in rural and remote communities.

My committee will be hearing a great deal of the comprehensive law-and-order legislation that we will be re-introducing. Our Conservative govern-ment takes very seriously our fundamental duty to protect the personal safety of our citizens and de-fend against threats to our national security.

There are many more federal government policies, programs and services that will be dealt with by our majority government. As always, I will endeavor to write about them in my news columns throughout the 41st Parliament. In turn, I hope you will con-tinue to feel free to share with me your views on the performance of our Conservative government.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or e-mail [email protected].

Opening the 41st Parliament

Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson has been re-elected to Chair the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. Sorenson says, “It is an honour and a privilege to serve Parliament in this capacity. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to oversee the passage through committee stage of the pending legislation to scrap the failed and costly long-gun registry.”

It is already widely expected that the Public Safety and National Security Committee will be conducting public hearings on numerous Bills to be re-introduced from the previous Parliament in-cluding: Protecting Children from Sexual Preda-tors (formerly Bill C-54); Protecting the Public from Violent Young Offenders (formerly Bill C-4); End-ing House Arrest for Serious Crimes (formerly Bill C-16); Increasing Offender Accountability (formerly

Bill C-39); Penalties for Organized Drug Crime (for-merly Bill S-10); Citizen’s Arrest and Self-Defence Act (formerly C-60); and, the Anti-Human Smug-gling Act (formerly Bill C-49).

Sorenson continues, “our first item of business will be to examine the selection criteria for the next RCMP Commissioner. This follows the Prime Min-ister’s request that the Public Safety and National Security committee be consulted on the selection criteria.”

Sorenson concludes, “I hope to maintain the con-fidence and good will expressed by the committee members in my ability to serve in the Chair. As the Chair, I want to be of assistance to the committee and facilitate its deliberations. Canadian taxpayers expect our committees to work hard and achieve substantive results.”

Kris Owen, 20, began growing his hair out when he was 12-years-old, and hasn’t had more than a trim since then. On June 24, that’s going to change. Owen will be participating in the head shave taking place at Cooters, in con-

junction with the 12th Annual Strath-more Poker Run.

“A couple of reasons, it’s just kind of a pain…these days and it gets in the way, and…it’s due time. I’m grown up now, and working and whatnot,” said Owen about his decision to lose his locks.

From the pony tail elastic to the ends of his hair is 20 inches. Owen’s mother Rene said she will be the one cutting off the ponytail, and she won’t be letting anyone touch it after that. Owen plans to donate his hair, but hasn’t finalized where it will be going.

The plan is to buzz it all off, some-thing that Owen is kind of nervous about.

“I haven’t looked any different for a long time, it will definitely be weird. Right now it’s not too bad but I’m sure the day of I’ll be pretty nerve wracked.”

Owen has been involved with the Poker run for years, volunteering his time, but this is the first time he’s de-cided to raise money.

“I’ve always kind of been involved with the poker run since it started. The guys have bugged me in the past cou-ple of years to do it,” said Owen.

“I always said if I were to cut my hair it would go to something like this, some sort of organization. Just something I can do to give back a bit, anybody could use some good karma.”

Medications and other substances (eg. dyes used to tattoo

the skin, certain foods, etc.) can sensitize a person’s skin to

ultraviolet light. The most common reaction is photosensitivity.

Photosensitivity occurs when the level of UV exposure needed to produce a burn is reduced. So

instead of helping someone to tan more easily, photosensitizing agents

should be thought of in terms of how easily they cause a person to burn. The best way to determine if a medication has photosensitizing

potential is to consult with the prescribing medical

practitioner or pharmacist.

Home improvement tips from

Brownish or tan discolouration on the surface of paint due to seepage of tannic acid through the paint film. Typically occurs on redwood, cedar, mahogany, or another “staining” wood, or over painted knots in certain other wood species, most notably, some types of pine.

possible Causes:• Failure to adequately prime and seal surface before applying the

paint.• Use of the wrong type of primer, i.e., one that is not sufficiently

stain resistant.• Excess humidity or other moisture escaping through the exterior

walls, which can transport the stain to the surface of the paint.

solutions:Correct any possible sources of excess moisture. If necessary,

repair roof, replace caulking, and clean gutters and downspouts; also, cut away heavy vegetation if it is near the area that is stained. If moist air is originating inside building, consider installing vents, exhaust fans and dehumidifiers, especially in kitchen, bathroom and laundry areas. Remove all loose paint with a scraper or wire brush. After thoroughly cleaning or power washing the surface, apply high quality strain-resistant oil based or latex primer; if the staining is se-vere, apply a second coat of primer after the first has dried thorough-ly. Finish with a top quality acrylic latex paint; or with a high quality oil based paint, so long as an oil based primer is used for the undercoat.

Staff Sgt. Larry Marzinzik with the Strathmore RCMP presented the Annual Performance Plan, APP, to council on June 21. Many things have stayed the same over the 2010 year as they had in 2009, with only a few changes. There has been a 30 per cent decline in fatal vehicle accidents, while there was a 10 per cent increase in non-fatal accidents. There has been an 11 per cent increase in thefts.

Public works Wheatland County and the public works depart-

ment will once again be loaning out a grader and water truck to Rockyford to help get the track ready for their upcoming rodeo.

Carseland will also be making use of a grader

this weekend to get their track ready in time for Aggie Days, beginning on June 24.

sandbagsThe Carseland Fire Department requested 5,000

sandbags from the county to keep on hand in the event they may need them.

Gerry Van Ooostwaard Public Works Superinten-dent for Wheatland County said the bags should remain empty because they will rot over time. A motion was made to increase the number of bags kept on hand by the county, and to distribute them as needed.

streetlight Rosebud will be getting a new streetlight. The

light will be at the west end of 2nd Ave. Fortis Al-berta said they will put a light in at no cost to the county as long as they use the existing light post.

Brentwood elementary Schools Safety Patrol Team took part in the annual AmA Safety Patrol Picnic at Heritage Park on June 2. There were over 7000 patrollers and supervisors at the picnic and Brentwood’s Safety Patrol Team was awarded the First Place Trophy in the rural division for the second year in a row. This was the third consecutive year the team won something. Last year, they en-tered a safety contest and were awarded $1,000 for their submission and two years ago the team won the Team Spirit Award and another $1,000.

Having a new baby can be a big enough challenge but when the child is born with health problems, a whole new world of challenges can arise.

“Mia was born August 8, 2009 and right from day one it was troubles. She has what’s called Pierre Robin, and it’s a sequence not a syndrome,” said Cathy Rhodes, mother of Mia and five-year-old Wyatt.

“So she had a cleft palate and her jaw is quite a bit back farther then most kids so her actual tongue will close her airway off.”

Mia spent 109 days in hospital, not coming home until just before Christmas.

Rhodes said the first day she had a Nis-sen fundoplication, anytime Mia would eat she would aspirate, she would throw up, and it would go down her airway. Surgery was done so that the top of her stomach is wrapped around the bottom of her esophagus. Mia can’t throw up or burp, ever.

Rhodes said anytime someone eats they get gas buildup in their stomach so now Mia has a tube that’s connected to her, and there is a syringe that allows the air bubbles out, so it’s like burping.

“She’s 100 per cent tube fed, so we have a pump and she’s hooked up to a bag a few times a day. Overnight she’s fed all night long,” said Rhodes.

Mia has a little g-tube that connects to her stomach, which is how she is fed. The doctors thought she might have started eating now but she won’t take anything. Rhodes said there were some kids at the hospital who are 16-years-old and still tube fed overnight because they can’t ingest enough calories during the day. Rhodes said she thinks that may be where they are going with Mia.

Mia was on oxygen for a long time and Rhodes said she wasn’t growing; she was sweating heavily at night and snoring a lot. She thought something was wrong, so they had a sleep study done on Mia.

“We were told that she had severe ob-structed sleep apnea,” said Rhodes.

She said most kids are given a number for how many times an hour they either obstruct or completely stop breathing. Twenty is considered a high number; Mia’s number was 100 times in one hour.

“They said really you’re quite lucky that she’s still here, because that’s pretty crazy and then they said that we needed a c-pap machine, which is a constant pos-itive air pressure (machine). Then in the same breath they said she really, really needs it, its $2,500 and it’s not covered.”

It costs the Rhodes’ $900 a month just for formula, plus Mia needs the feed-bags and medical supplies. To be told they needed to come up with $2,500 was news they couldn’t afford to hear.

Rhodes did some looking around and starting phoning different government

organizations to see who would help, no one wanted to help.

She said she was told that if the c-pap were for herself or her husband it would be covered but because it was for a child it wouldn’t be. She decided to write the Red Cross and the Strathmore Lions Club to see if they may be able to help. The Red Cross met with the Rhodes, and be-gan to phone all of their resources. After continuing to do research online Rhodes found a c-pap machine being sold in To-ronto for half of the price.

“Albi Homes gave us $500 to put to-wards her c-pap machine and then the Lions Club actually gave us $1,500, so it paid for her whole machine,” said Rhodes.

“I think the most frustrating thing for me is, it’s so wonderful that we have those organizations that are able to help us, but we can’t be the only family.

It sucks already to have a small kid that is sick and it sucks even more to know that you can’t even afford the stuff that is going to keep them alive. We would have sold our house if it had come to that, but should it come to that? Should the gov-ernment not say it’s a child and she’s go-ing to die unless she has that machine?”

She said they were lucky to have the organizations step up to help that they did. Rhodes said she and her family are hugely thankful to the Lions for helping their family out the way they did. She had written a letter and asked them to help anyway they could, no matter the

amount. “It just seemed like the only people

that were willing to help was the Lions, the Red Cross and Albi Homes,” said Rhodes.

The family still has a long journey ahead of them, but Rhodes said she has great family support, and Wyatt is the best big brother, intently looking out for his baby sister already.

“We have a fantastic little family, just a little more challenges than most.”

Students from Expressions the Dance Gallery had a chance to showcase some of what they have learned this year at the annual year-end recital held at the Jubilee in Calgary on June 19.

“Even though it’s called the Year End Recital, it’s not for a lot of the kids. For a lot of the full time com-petitive students, or kids that re-ally take their art form seriously, they don’t stop,” said Angela Mur-doch, one of the instructors with Expressions.

Everyone from the studio, from the short-term students up to the full-year program students partici-pated. The studio also has classes

for adults, who are welcome to take part in the recital but de-clined to do so this year.

“It’s so great because I was just saying to my friends when we were backstage, the last time I was in the theatre besides recital, was when I came and I saw an off-Broadway musical here,” said Murdoch.

“It’s hard to explain to the kids how important the theatre is, and what a great opportunity they have. I’m sure it’s something they’ll understand as they get older.”

The recital is not about making money. Murdoch said it’s about giving kids an opportunity to per-form in a large venue and to ex-perience what it’s really like to be on stage with a professional crew.

Anyone was welcome to attend the recital, regardless of whether or not they had a friend or child involved in the recital.

Dress rehearsal began at 10 a.m., giving all of the dancers a chance to do a full run through of the per-formance while hopefully alleviat-ing some of the nervousness.

While the year may be “over,” there are still many things going on throughout the summer at the studio. There will be a one-day summer school on June 25, a full week intensive dance camp and more playful dance camps over the course of the summer months.

Anyone who is interested in any form of dance is encouraged to call the studio to get more infor-mation.

Dance students, and in-structors from Expres-sions the Dance Gallery were excited and a little nervous as they prepared for their year end show, held at the Jubilee in Cal-gary on June 19.

Lindsey Woodcock of Strathmore is set to per-form in the “Production of Nashira” at the Cal-gary Stampede this July.

“I’ve always wanted to do something like this,” said Woodcock.

After hearing of the show from coach Jeff Langdon, Woodcock decided to audition. The auditions were held at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary. There were 30 skaters in at-tendance, and after learning a routine in five minutes the hard work began. Woodcock beat out some tough competition.

“We had to learn the routine, perform various tricks such as jumps and spins and I also had to do an interview as part of the audition process,” said Woodcock.

A week later she got the call back. A lot of training will have to be done prior to the show, but Woodcock, being a disciplined athlete al-ready, is ready for the challenge. As of July 1, full-day rehearsals will be the daily regime for Woodcock as routines have to be executed with perfection come Stampede time.

France Gavvin is the choreographer of the production this year and it is expected to be spectacular.

“The costumes are awesome and the props will be really fun,” said Woodcock.

Woodcock will be skating in the Stampede Corral Arena alongside the likes of Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, gold medalists in the 2002 Olympic Games, Vaughn Chipeur who compet-ed in the 2010 Olympic Games, and another ac-complished local skater, Erica Risseuw and her skating partner Robert Paxton.

Following the Stampede, the production will go on tour starting in February of 2012.

“I thought it would be a great experience and something fun to do,” said Woodcock.

As for the future, Woodcock plans to obtain her coaching certification to pass on the knowl-edge and passion of figure skating on to eager students.

Spurs share why they love the gameShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The U16 Spurs soccer sea-son is coming to an end, with only two games left of the regular season. The goal at the beginning of the sea-son was to aim to take part in the Intercities tournament held in Edmonton, which only the top eight teams can make it into, coach Ken Oli-phant said they are on target for it.

For the U16 girls, playing soccer is just as much about having fun as it is about winning the game.

“The girls keep com-ing back year after year, so we’re doing something right and that’s the main thing,” said Oliphant.

Some of the team are new to soccer this year, some haven’t played since they were little, and others have kept up with the sport since they were young.

Courtney-Ann Crawford has been playing soccer since she was two-years-old.

“It’s just something I’m re-ally passionate about. I just love the sport, and I grew up with it,” said Crawford.

“We cheer on our whole team. If we lose we give three cheers to the other team and congratulate them and then we have one cheer for us.”

“It’s better than what I expected because everyone is so together on this,” said Kennedy Thomlinson, who is in her first season.

She said you come across

some teams who get upset when their teammates don’t pull off a play, but her team isn’t like that. Thomlinson said she feels she has a bet-ter understanding of the game after this past season than she had previously.

“I love it, I love the girls on our team, they’re all very nice and they’re really good at soccer,” said Mariah Wil-son.

Wilson plays ringette in the winter and wanted to find a way to keep busy over the summer months. She plans to keep playing soc-cer and said if she doesn’t join Spurs she will join the Strathmore High School girls soccer team next year.

“I just like the sport itself. I’ve grown up with it,” said goalie Brenda Lazaro.

Lazaro was supposed to play defense at the begin-ning of the season but was put in goal because of an injury.

“I’ve kind of improved on being aware of the ball, and where it is all times and if it’s coming at me,” said Laz-aro.

Her goal is to continue with her soccer career as far as she can go; she would like to one day make a na-tional team.

“The team’s really fun. It’s not all about winning for our team, and everyone seems to be friends,” said Mairi Oliphant.

“The season is going well. We’re not winning all the games, but we are just as good as all the teams.”

Alternative rodeo comes to StrathmoreShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

For the third year in a row, a differ-ent type of rodeo will be coming to Strathmore from July 1 to 3 when the Canadian Rockies International Rodeo, CRIR, comes to Strathmore. The rodeo consists of representatives from the Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Associa-tion, ARGRA, and the International Gay Rodeo Association, IGRA. The event is three days of fun and two full days of rodeo. The rodeo will have some of the usual events which can be seen at any small town rodeo. One of the big-gest differences is men and women can compete in all events. Some events - steer decorating, goat dressing and wild

drag, for instance - were created specifi-cally for the gay rodeo.

“Our rodeo pretty much is the same, not a lot has actually changed with events and that sort of thing. The thing that’s probably changed the most is our midway,” said Judy Munson, Communi-cations Director for the ARGRA

“We’ve focused a little more on some of the things that are going on, on the midway. We have people that attend our rodeo that don’t really care about rodeo, believe it or not in Alberta. They come for the party, so what we’ve done is, we’ve added some dances, and we’ve added some events in the midway so there’s more going on.

“Our theme this year is kind of a country-western midway ghost town

The Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion, Branch Number 10, made a $2,158 donation to the Calgary military Family Resource Centre on June 14. The money was raised from the fourth annual Shoot for the Troops dart tournament held last month at the Legion. Audra demolitor (l-r) of the Calgary military Family Resource Centre accepts the cheque from Comrade Betty Ann Fountain, organizer of the tournament and Legion President Jenny Schumann.

kind of thing, we’re painting little fa-cades and stuff like that, so that should be fun.”

They have turned the EnCana stage into a showboat stage with entertain-ment taking place all day long. Friday night will be the big cabaret dance.

Munson said in conjunction with that, the little barn called the strobe light barn will have a set of DJ’s that will be playing club music.

“So we have both options. We have the country-western cabaret where you can two-step, and line dance and do all that. Or you can go down to the other end of the area and go into the strobe light barn and dance to club music,” said Munson.

All day Friday July 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a rodeo school. Last year was the first year for the rodeo school. It’s a way to teach some of the easier rodeo events to people who may be interested in participating but don’t know where to start. The only require-ments are the competitors must be at least 18-years-old and a member of one of the gay organizations/associations.

Munson said they have a lot of peo-ple who come every year and want to get involved but didn’t know how to, which is why the rodeo school was formed.

The Country Carnival on the midway has fun games, and originated because ARGRA wanted to open it up to non-profit groups. Munson said the rodeo brings in a lot of people, and it’s a great way for them to be able to raise money for their groups. There will also be a number of booths with people selling goodies.

“That’s one thing we’ve found this year, is that the businesses in Strath-more have really come on board with sponsorships, and being involved,” said Munson.

Some of the Heritage Days volunteers help with the gay rodeo and volunteers from the gay rodeo will lend a hand with the Heritage Days rodeo.

Tickets are available at the gate. There will be a board listing what events will be taking place and what time, so that people can just go up to the gate to see what time the events they are inter-ested in are taking place.

Students from Hussar School hosted their modified Track and Field competition for Kin-dergarten to Grade 6 athletes on June 16 at the school. Teacher miss mcRae came up with seven different events for the kids to do. These events were; Animal Relay, Drip-Drip Splash, Shot Put, Frisbee Throw, Obstacle Course, Standing Long Jump and Fill-er-Up. After a morning with lots of rain, the afternoon turned out to be quite nice. The kids all com-peted in each event and ribbons were given out in certain events. On June 17 students at Wheatland elementary School took part in the second annual Active Living Community Day. Students could be seen all over the school, inside and out, taking part in a variety of different activities, such as yoga, dance, soccer, football and a number of other events. The students also learned about what’s in their favourite drinks, and had a chance to try a healthy fruit smoothie.
