Earlier this year the Sagewood Se-niors Community officially opened their doors, and on Dec. 20 more good news was brought to the facility.

“I’m proud to announce that the prov-ince will provide AgeCare Health Ser-vices with $7.6 million for the devel-opment of 100 spaces, consisting of 70 supportive living and 30 long term care spaces as part of the Sagewood Seniors Community project,” said MLA Arno Doerkson.

The grant for the project falls under the Affordable Supportive Living Initia-tive (ASLI), and nine organizations will share the $48.2 million being invested in to new projects for 2012.

Out of the nine centres, Sagewood and Walden Heights in Calgary have received the largest funding, allowing both to add 100 more beds.

“This is going to be a great facility, we appreciate the government and all those involved for making it possible for our community,” said Mayor Steve Grajczyk.

“This facility ensures that Strathmore will continue to be a community that ensures that needs of our seniors are met for now and in the future.”

Lori Anderson, Vice-President of Com-munity and Rural Mental Health with Alberta Health Services (AHS), said by April 2012 AHS will have opened 2,300 beds in communities across the prov-ince, bringing them closer to their over-all target.

“Alberta Health Services has set a tar-get to open 5,300 additional continuing care beds provincially by 2015 and so these beds are a very important part of it,” said Anderson.

“This is part of our overall strategy to ensure Alberta’s seniors have the sup-port they need to stay healthy, stay safe and well cared for in their own commu-nities.”

“This isn’t something that happened because one person thought it was a good idea, this happened because many people over many years had raised the importance of this issue,” said Doerk-son.

How do we pull that magical number out of

our …. Computer?“Have you had any claims in the

last 6 years?” Keep in mind that a history will be pulled, which will go through the claims that come up under your drivers licence number.

There are all kinds of claims. Claims where the liability or the property damage pays. You could be at fault. Or the other driver. How about the poor people in the middle of a multiple car pile-up on Highway 2!! There are claims for comprehensive cover as well, we will get into that next week. It’s a real nail biter....

What happens if the claims adjustor finds you to be at fault? (the adjustor is the one who determines this, after an investigation. The ‘insurance world’ has its own rules. The opinion of a bystander, an experienced driver, or even a police officer may differ from that of the adjustor. But the adjuster’s opinion is what we go by. Be nice to them!!!

This can affect your premium for 6+ years!!! You will lose your claims free discount (if you had one). You go up 5 levels on THE GRID. Every level you go up, you lose that 5% discount on your liability. Worse yet, once you are a 0 on the grid, add an additional 10% for each level you go up!! It takes 5 years claims free to break even, and an extra year to get your 5% discount back and be eligible for the claims free discount again!

The children of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard performed their

annual Christmas Concert in their retelling of the Nativity in “Listen to the

Angels”. The children worked on their production since the end of Octo-

ber and even prepared their very own “angel avatars” that hung above

them as part of the heavenly host of angels that sang the night of Jesus

birth in Bethlehem. Something special to hear their little voices and see

them in angelic costumes. The performance was followed by a potluck

Glee club brings Christmas cheerShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The Holiday spirit was alive and well at the Wheatland Lodge on Dec. 14 when the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Glee Club left after singing carols to the residents.

The Club were originally going to sing only two songs, but after walking around to say hello and wish a Merry Christmas to the residents, they decid-ed to start a sing-along.

The students may not have known all of the words to the requested car-ols, but they did their best and left the residents happy and feeling the holi-day spirit.

The Glee Club first started at HCC at the beginning of the last school year.

“We always sing choir for mass and it was hard to get kids just to sing for mass without having a sort of fun side

of choir,” said Carla Bisharat, an HCC teacher and Glee Club organizer.

“So then we had the Glee Club in-stead so they can actually sing fun songs in the times when they sing at the spring concert and at the Christmas concert as well and then they also sing at mass.”

Sarah Lyons, the band director at HCC, also organizes the Glee Club and said the students enjoy singing popular songs and performing at school events.

The Club performed on Dec. 19 at the HCC Christmas Fine Arts night, and will do so again at the Spring Fine Arts night in May.

“We sing songs for Mass but then we choose songs for Glee that are more popular which the students enjoy. For example, last year we sang ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and ‘Africa’ and this year we might tackle ‘Jai Ho’,” said Lyons.

Merry Christmas from our family to yours.

In the nick of timeShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

Once again Strathmore and Wheatland County residents have pulled through to help support the Christmas Hamper Society. Dona-tions began pouring through the doors on Dec. 13 and as of Dec. 19 the tables were filled with items ready to be distributed.

“This last week literally it just poured in. The schools particularly were just great, and the villages as well,” said Dave Collins, chairperson with the Christmas Hamper Society.

Collins had been concerned when the tables were bare a few weeks ago, and was happy to see things pick up just in time.

Bins had been placed at stores around town to collect non-perish-able food items.

There were 230 hampers packed

this year, each of which costs ap-proximately $400 to fill. Collins said cash donations were also good again this year, allowing them to purchase things like dish soap, milk, fresh produce and a number of other nec-essary items from Sobeys.

“We buy all this produce from Sobeys and Neil Kennedy is so good, he gives us a very generous discount. He’s very good, he’s a real supporter,” said Collins.

This was the 26th year for the Christmas Hamper Society, which provides a hamper filled with food, toys and other basics for those in need. Collins said each hamper is intended to last a family for six weeks.

Even though the distribution days for the Christmas Hamper Society are over, there will still be a need to help those in our community who are less fortunate.

Continued from Page 1“This is the kind of facility that pro-

vides the kind of care that we know is important for our families. The op-portunity to stay in communities and the aging in community approach that has been taken is extremely im-portant.”

Many agreed that by opening the Sagewood Seniors Community many are returning, or able to stay, in the area.

“Our vision has always been that

we need to build a community that truly depicts and reflects the needs of the larger community, becomes a core filler of this community,” said Dr. Kabir Jivraj, Managing Director with AgeCare Communities of Care and Wellness.

He said everyone will at some point in their life need to consider a care facility, and that AgeCare’s mission is to provide the best quality of life to everyone who calls an AgeCare facil-ity their home.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, gave the luster of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! “Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! on, Comet! on, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall, now dash away, dash away, dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, with the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof, the prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back and he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack. His eyes-how they twinkled, his dimples how merry, his cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow and the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle and away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., CrowfootParliamentary Report

The House of Commons will rise this week for the Christmas break following a very productive Fall Session. While our Conservative government’s top priority remains jobs and economic growth, we have made major progress on implementing the major planks of our 2011 election campaign promises.

Providing freedom for Canadian grain farmers (Bill C-18); decriminalizing long-gun owners by scrapping the long-gun registry (Bill C-19); pursu-ing nine changes in one bill that will help pro-vide safer streets and communities across Canada (C-10); and address the under-representation of Western Canada (Bill C-20); are all major election campaign promises that are now well on their way to being passed by parliament. We have almost 40 bills introduced and being debated, in the house and senate.

In contrast to the opposition charges that our government is proceeding too fast, many Cana-dians observing our progress note the time con-suming parliamentary procedures and processes that each Bill must follow. The majority of my constituents wish that Bills C-10, C-18 and C-19 were already passed into law and serving victims of crime, Western grain producers, and long-gun owners and users. These three bills contain mea-sures that have been debated numerous times in Parliament over many years – including before our Conservative government’s election in 2006.

The opposition is doing everything they can to prevent legislation from proceeding beyond sec-ond reading. They use the rules to extend debate and remove any time limits. Then, they object

when our house leader imposes a time limit. As our Member of Parliament, I served almost

half of my tenure as a member of the Official Op-position. I can remember long discussions in cau-cus with Official Opposition Leader Preston Man-ning for example, where we chose specific Liberal government Bills that we would ‘fight to the fin-ish’ on the floor of the House of Commons.

Mostly, we opposed government Bills that we did not support by making our position clear to Canadians during the course of the debates and hearings. We did the most we could in the time allotted by procedural rules. While we did ‘filibus-ter’ or employ rarely used rules from time-to-time, we did not automatically resort to preventing ev-ery bill from proceeding.

Using our majority in the House of Commons and the Senate, we are helping create jobs and stimulate economic growth by completing our work on Canada’s Economic Action Plan through Bill C13, our Second Budget Implementation Bill which is currently in the Senate.

We are determined to pass all the other Bills that we have introduced. But, it will be on a time-line that is - by the rules - influenced by the Op-position parties.

Canadians are watching our Conservative gov-ernment strike a balance between the progress our parliamentary majority allows, and the delays that the Opposition tries to invoke.

I wish all of my constituents in Crowfoot a Mer-ry Christmas and all the best in 2012!

Pat fuleFule for Thought

I went to the doctor recently and he had a diag-nosis for me. It was a two word one that he put into Layman’s terms (he must have known that one of my degrees is a PE one!).

The diagnosis was straight and to the point: “you’re fat”.

Well, he didn’t exactly say the words, but he hinted at it! He used words like lifestyle changes, diet, good and bad cholesterol, and the painful one: excess abdominal fat. But I know what he meant … I’m too “husky”!

So … I’m finally back into jogging on the high school’s treadmill. At 51, jogging on a treadmill is not so fun. You find things hurt that you nev-er knew could hurt. Sometimes the wheezing is louder than my iPod!!

In fact, it reminds me of that great movie, “The Green Mile”. I’m jogging my own Green Mile. In-stead of the movie expression, “Dead Man Walkin”, for me, it’s “Fat Boy Joggin”!

Surprisingly, the high school students have been kind to me when I jog in the gym. They always

look so concerned … they even ask me if I need anything, and I resist the urge to ask for a “bucket of chicken … bucket of chicken….”

I always make sure they know the number for 9-1-1, or that they can at least call information for the number! ( You do have to be sure that at least some of the kids will try and save you).

Some of the kids have been dead honest with me. They’ve told me straight up, that they’ll pound on my chest a few times, but no “mouth to mouth”! I guess I understand how they feel, I mean think back to your high school PE teacher … scary, eh?

So … I’m slowly getting into shape, and it’s hopefully not going to be a round one! Heck, I may even run in a PE class’s 20 Minute Run. But, you can bet I’ll have my cell phone on me, and it’ll be set to the Emergency number!

Response to 911 call Results in injuRy to RcMp MeMbeR

At approximately 4:45 a.m. on Dec. 14, RCMP Members in Strathmore responded to multiple 911 calls originating from a male complainant at a resi-dence within the Town of Strathmore. Upon arriving they encountered the person who had placed the calls and observed him to be agitated, aggressive and be-lieved him to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance or substances. Upon attempting to arrest this individual a struggle ensued between him and the attending police. In the course of getting him under control a member of the RCMP suffered a minor injury to his hand was seen at the hospital and released. The arrested individual was transported to the hospital for assessment by doctors due to his intoxicated and agi-tated state. He did not suffer Injuries as a result of the arrest. The investigation remains ongoing and charges are pending.

MaRihuana gRow op seaRch waRRantOn Dec. 18, during the late afternoon, an owner of

a rental property conducted a scheduled inspection of his residence situated in the West Lakeview Place area of Chestermere.

The locks on the residence were changed and no occupants were present. When the owner checked inside the residence he found numerous marihuana plants in the basement along with significant con-struction. Members of the Chestermere RCMP were present when the owner checked on his property at his request.

This residence was then sealed off by police of-ficers posted to maintain the scene. Other members of the Chestermere RCMP obtained a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. This search warrant was granted and executed at 10:30 p.m. with the assistance of the joint forces Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) Calgary based Green Team South.

Inside the residence was over 200 marihuana plants with a street value in excess of $250,000.

It appeared the persons renting the residence were in the process of transforming the basement into a marihuana grow op. The electrical system was altered to support the increased power consumption. The water system was also by passed to avoid detection of increased usage. The completed basement was damaged by the process of removing carpet, hanging high intensity lights, adding vents, adding a significant amount of electrical rewiring and adding make shift walls to section off the basement into different grow-ing areas.

The structural integrity of the residence has yet to be assessed by Alberta Health Services.

If anyone has any information in this crime or any other please contact the Chestermere RCMP at (403) 204-8777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or through the internet at www.tipsubmit.com.

Crime stoppers will pay cash rewards up to $2000 for information that leads to an arrest, the recovery of stolen property or seizure of illegal drugs. Crime Stop-pers does not subscribe to call display and the identity of the caller will remain anonymous.

Letters to the editor

To the EditorI see the mayor and town councilors

(with the exception of Rocky) voted to keep the pool cold for the swim club’s benefit.

However, if tepid water makes them nauseous, what are they going to do when they compete in most of the other towns and cities pools around Alberta? They are certainly going to be at a dis-tinct disadvantage as these pools’ average mean water temperature ranges 29-31 de-

grees. Now that they have exclusive use of the

pool, I hope the town is at least charging the swim club the $110 per hour rental rate fee. It should help make up for the loss in revenue from the general public.

P.S. Calgary charges seniors $1 for a splash swim.

Yours trulyAnna Reinwald,

To the EditorOn November 3, 2011, McElhanney

Consulting Services unveiled their revised plan on behalf of Alberta Transportation. This plan has been in the making for over a year and is an excellent alterna-tive to the previous plan, which would have seen the Bypass going considerably further south. Not everyone is happy with the new plan, however, I have had conversations with the business people located along the highway and they re-alize that we cannot have traffic coming through Town at 110 km/hr without ac-cess or egress.

The map attached of the original plan clearly shows the devastating effect it would have had on the businesses along the highway. All of the traffic lights with-in the Town limits would have been re-moved and the speed limit would have increased to 110 km/hr, making it sui-cide for pedestrians to cross the highway. With the road right of way required for the original plan, about 80% of the busi-

nesses along the highway would have been eradicated.

Transportation have never stated that they intend on building a 6 or 8 lane highway in the immediate future, howev-er they intend to take enough road right of way to ensure that the land is avail-able should traffic volumes dictate the need for additional lanes. There is noth-ing wrong with forward thinking; in fact, had they taken road right of way at the time the highway was twinned through the Town, we would have be in this pre-dicament today!

In defense of Alberta Transportation, they have not flip-flopped on their plans. They have been extremely accommodat-ing by changing their plans to suit the needs of the majority of businesses, with the safety of our citizens in mind.

The Trans Canada will become a free-way through Alberta and Strathmore will not slow them down or stop them!

PJ day at Wheatland elementary

many people helped make the annual food drive a success.

Wheatland School celebrated Pajama day Dec. 16. mrs. Lenoxs’ Grade 5’s collected of over 200 pj’s that will be donated to the Strathmore Crisis Society.

The Wheatland County Food Bank is giving back again this holiday season. Having been in operation for over 20 years, and donating around 500 food hampers each year, the WCFB anticipates another successful year. The pickups of the collected, non-perishable food were made on Dec 13-14 at many of the schools and small businesses throughout Strathmore.

“Strathmore is a very generous community, whether or not they don’t know their names, they will donate food or money so we can go out and buy some of items that we need,” said volunteer of over five years, Alan Urichuk.

Over the years, Urichuk says that the system he and vol-unteers Bob Telford and Brian Allemang have working to-gether runs quite smoothly.

“The timing for pickups works perfectly if we do it about every hour, like with Bob, Brian and myself, we just get in there, unload and go to the next school, and do the same thing. We are pretty quick for older fellas,” said Urichuk.

The collection aspect is only the beginning of the hamper process. The collected food is then carefully counted and organized into hampers, taking into account the number of members in each family. The hampers are then numbered and designated to a particular family in need.

“People forget they can still phone in, and even at the last minute, people can donate money, or apply to receive a hamper. We aren’t going to deny anybody, and some people don’t even come to pick up their hamper, so we always try to notify them in case they don’t show up,” said Urichuk.

Standard Lions Club Stag Auction

Huge thank you to all the buyers who helped us raise over $90,000. It takes both donors and buyers to make an event like the lions auction succeed. Thanks to everyone who was involved. All monies raised will be going to the new Standard Community Hall.

No food is left to waste. Leftover food is either sent back to the WCFB or is donated to the Mustard Seed or-ganization. Generally, the food can be dispersed throughout Strathmore and surrounding communities.

The years of volunteering have been very rewarding, according to Urichuk, and he says it’s a nice thing to give, rather than always receiving during Christmas.

“I didn’t really know what I was getting into, and once I got into it, I started realizing, this is a good deal to do at Christmas. Most of the time, fami-lies are too busy with their own inner circles, they don’t think about other people who might need assistance. For me it’s been fun, serious but fun,” said Urichuk.

More information about donating to the WCFB or to apply for a hamper can be found by calling 403-934-5335.

One Siksika man is working hard to fundraise in order to help keep his people’s culture alive in today’s youth. Raleigh Weasel Head was at the Hope Community Covenant Church Christmas Market on Dec. 10 selling a variety of handmade native crafts to raise money.

The money he is making goes towards his program, ‘Back to our roots through Native dance’ which teaches the young-er generation traditional dances from their culture.

“What made me start was going around and not seeing too many par-ticipate anymore, especially within our tribe,” said Weasel Head.

“There’s hardly any dancers left and so I figured I would take it upon my-self to start teaching, and have it carry on our tradition through dancing and through crafts.”

Weasel Head’s first class had 14 girls in it, learning how to do dances such as the jingle dance and the woman’s fancy dance. All classes will also learn how to make their own regalia to go home so they may keep up with their dancing in competitions.

“I’m having the parents come in and help make the outfits so that way down the road they don’t have to hire some-body, they’ll know how to make it. Or if somebody wanted to have their daugh-ter make an outfit they’ll know how to help out, so it goes in a circle for us,” said Weasel Head.

Weasel Head said he had tried to go to his band to ask for funding and has not received anything.

“It didn’t bother me that I didn’t get any funding from my own reserve, I just kept on going just to see it come back and keep going strong,” said Weasel Head.

“I’m trying to voice myself and I’m trying to do it for our people to keep the tradition going. I don’t want to see it die down on us, to fade away on us.”

Weasel Head plans to hold a class for boys next. He said many of his students from his first classes wanted to keep dancing and learning.

“I’ll be bringing them in once a week or so just to keep going, keep practic-ing so they don’t lose it,” said Weasel Head.

For now though, he is focused on his fundraising efforts to be able to contin-ue to provide the classes.

The resulTs are in on The Gleichen waTer supply sTudy

Andy Tenaham and Troy McNiell from BSEI were asked by the county to evaluate the various possibilities for upgrades to the Gleichen area wa-ter system.

“Government guidelines have been updated and the current system will not meet those guidelines after 2015,” said McNiell, when questioned by council.

They presented a report evaluat-ing the current system, detailing up-grades that could be considered over a 20-year period and the various solu-tions the county might take. It includ-ed subsequent costs to remedy water problems for the area; and compared a regional supply solution that might benefit the county as a whole with a local solution that would service the Gleichen, Cluny and Namaka area.

The report identified many prob-lems with the current storage of raw water in the Gleichen reservoir, al-though the water quality was deter-mined safe at present. BSEI proposed a rebuilt and upgraded lagoon as well as a new treatment facility built to meet the province’s guidelines. The current water treatment plant is over 30-years-old. It was determined that upgrading the existing treatment plant was more expensive than build-ing a new plant.

They also recommended that the most cost effective solution to service low population areas would be by trucking the water rather than putting in a pipeline. McNiell suggested that council would receive a higher rate of funding from initiatives like Water for Life, should they proceed with a more localized solution.

“With upgrades to the wells, we found that trucking was about half the cost,” said David Churchill, Trans-portation and Infrastructure manager for Wheatland County. He said there were many maintenance costs for pipelines and if the pipeline system is extensive, additional chlorine in-jections are needed, which increase costs.

Other options were to include big population areas such as the Siksika reserve and the future Eagle Shores development with pipelines running from the treatment plant. Operational costs and maintenance of the pipe-lines were an expensive proposition.

Council members were concerned that other municipal and federal wa-ter studies were ongoing and ques-tioned how those plans would af-fect this study. They decided that the study would be accepted as informa-tion, with review in February 2012, when information from other studies might be available.increased doG Kennel fees

The Town of Strathmore issued a letter to Wheatland council announc-ing that the rates for dog holding kennel privileges are going up.

“We are currently being charged $250 per month for overnight stays,” said Gerald Skibinsky, Protective Ser-vices manager.

The Town of Strathmore indicated rates will increase to $1,457 a month, which is a 583 per cent increase. This is based on service fees for 365 days a year, providing for a kennel assistant and covering overtime on weekends.

“It was a shock to our department,” said Skibinsky.

Councillor Bernice Bland comment-

ed that the county service did not uti-lize the Strathmore kennels 365 days a year.

County peace officers delivered other options such as retaining the services of the Calgary Humane Soci-ety, which were also already used in conjunction with the town services. The cost is $50 per dog with an ad-ditional $10 fee if the animal is eutha-nized. Calgary veterinary clinics were used to house overflow numbers. The frequency of delivery to Cal-gary would increase to daily delivery. There were no other municipalities within Wheatland County that could accommodate a similar kennel. If the county built a similar facility, the cost would be over $40,000. Council voted to forgo Strathmore services and re-tain the Calgary Humane Services for one year and re-evaluate the cost ef-fectiveness at that time.

Councillors were upset that the Town did not give notice prior to the increase and asked that a letter be sent to address the issue.dynaGra sTorm waTer reTenTion pond and diTch

There was a question whether the ditch dug by Dynagra, in the Carse-land area, was causing additional runoff problems. Water was accumu-lating on the property and causing problems for the company and adja-cent neighbours.

“We determined that the runoff with the ditch is the same as the nat-ural drainage for the area,” said Da-vid Churchill, Transportation and In-frastructure manager for Wheatland County.

He recommended that the ditch be kept and the existing storm water pond on site remains.adverTisinG Trailer warninG

Council members noticed that more advertising trailers are sprouting up on land adjacent to roadways. This is-sue was dealt with in previous years, according to Alberta Transportation guidelines. It was noted that there is a designated setback from the road allowance designated for these signs. Councillors asked that the previous motion be supplied, so attention can be given to this problem. alberTa healTh services reminded of sysTem overload

Two councillors attended informa-tion sessions with Alberta Health Ser-vices.

“We reminded them that Strath-more Hospital is dealing with 100 patients a day and the hospital only has 6 beds,” said Councillor Brenda Knight.

Officials responded that Strathmore Hospital is one of the top five candi-dates nominated, along with Calgary, for increased bed space and funding.

Councillors also supported employ-ing immigrant doctors with medical degrees.re-allocaTed mpc fundinG for rural fire services

President L. Delgado of the Strath-more Rural /Carseland Fire Asso-ciation updated council with recom-mendations that Municipal Province Compensation funds be allocated to the rural fire services within Wheat-land County. Fire services are com-pensated by the province for the number of calls they attend as well as training sessions.

“Hopefully with the changes will get on with our solvency,” said Del-gado.

The re-designated money would re-place some of the expenses now paid by the county.

Hope Community College, to be located in Drumheller, submitted an alternative course plan to council with changes to the course schedule. The county had granted money to the college in support of the courses with half going to a scholarship for a Wheatland County student. They hoped council would still approve that support. Council agreed that the courses and the scholarship were still important despite the changes and re-approved the funding.

Last Thursday, Dec. 15, people may have noticed a Calgary Police Service (CPS) cruiser in front of Sa-cred Heart Academy, and yellow po-lice tape cordoning off a section in front.

No crime was committed, and no one was injured. The CPS was at the school to help the Grade 6 students with their science unit, ‘Evidence and Investigation’.

“I started (this) because I thought it was interesting for the kids to get the hands-on perspective of what happens at a crime scene,” said teacher Renee DuBourdieu.

Students had a chance to prac-tice evidence collection, learn about fingerprinting and take their own prints, and much more.

Three years ago she contacted the CPS to see if they would be inter-ested in helping, and found them to be accommodating.

“We’ve had great success every year when we’ve done it. Very posi-tive feedback from the kids, they are all on task with it and they learn a lot from it which is the point of the

day,” said DuBourdieu. Constable Steve Terry has been

coming to the school to help with the crime scenes since the first year.

Terry said it is important to inter-act with people at a young age and show them there is a friendly face with the police, rather than them just being a law enforcement agency.

“It’s really important, because apart from teaching them stuff, these are the guys that we’re going to be dealing with later on anyway, so any opportunity to build rapport with anyone is fantastic,” said Terry.

He continued on to say every year is getting a little better as they are able to bring extra people out and different skill sets with them.

“This year we were able to bring out one of the patrol cars, we used that in one of the scenes. Kids were able to get pictures in there, sit in-side the vehicle, and listen to the si-rens. It was a really good experience for them to see some of the equip-ment we use as well,” said Terry.

DuBourdieu said the Grade 4 and 5 students see what is happening in the hallways and around the school and are usually anxious for their chance when they enter Grade 6.

The Strathmore Youth Council was first formed to give a voice to the ar-ea’s teens. It is also to help provide a connection between Strathmore and Wheatland County youth and the mu-nicipal councillors.

While the new youth council is working hard to start implementing ideas into reality, financial support is always something the council will need.

In late November students from Holy Cross Collegiate and Strathmore High School told town council of their idea for a youth council and present-ed a request for $3,000. Council ap-proved the motion, stating their full support for the students.

On Dec. 14 Mayor Steve Grajczyk made a personal donation to the

youth council. Grajczyk donated a Calgary Flames jersey that has been signed by all of the players on the cur-rent roster.

“I bought it at a fundraiser out of Calgary and I was looking for a group that would be (interested in) resell-ing it so to speak. I don’t need it, and I thought if it could help somebody out in the community that would be great,” said Grajczyk.

“The youth council came to the meeting one night and I was so im-pressed by them, and so was council, that we helped them out to get a start. Hopefully they make a lot of money with it to help them with their coun-cil.”

“We just want to say thank you so much for giving it to us and helping us out and getting us started,” said Jenna Gigantelli, a youth council member and Strathmore High School student.

At 1:40 a.m. on March 22 a fire raged through a home at the corner of Briar-wood Road and Briarwood Crescent in Strathmore. Four neighbouring homes were evacuated for the safety of the occupants due to the severity of the fire and wind direction. The occupants of the residence where the fire started were not home at the time. A second residence next to the first, was damaged by the fire.

Despite losing their first game, the Wheatland Kings responded with a winning weekend for the first time in over a month.

After extending their winless streak to six games, the local junior-A team won their next two games, improving their record to 11-13-1-2 on the sea-son and hanging on to a playoff spot heading into the Christmas holiday.

The Kings opened the weekend with a 9-3 road loss in High River on Dec. 16, before rebounding to defeat the Copperheads 6-5 in overtime the following day in Coaldale. The team capped off the weekend by defeating the Banff Bears 4-3 on Dec. 18 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

“It was so nice to get the gorilla off of our back,” said Kings head coach Doug Murphy in regards to the los-ing streak. “It was really wearing on everybody – you want to always stay positive, but it starts to bring you down. Guys start losing confidence and you end up questioning what you are doing. It kind of perpetuates to a downhill spiral.

“It was nice to break (the cycle).”The Kings suffered their eighth loss

in nine games, when they travelled to High River to open the weekend. De-spite supporting a better record than the sixth-place Flyers, the Kings have

dropped all the games to their divi-sion rival this season.

Parker Georgsen paced the Kings attack with a goal and an assist, while Austin Larsen and Racey Big Snake each scored once. Austin Fisher col-lected two assists for the Kings, who fell 4-1 early in the game and trailed 7-2 after two periods.

The following day in Coaldale, Georgsen left his mark on the game by scoring the overtime winner. Bran-don Neufeld scored twice, while An-drew Bergmann and Sam Lonnberg each record a goal and an assist. Brennan Grasdahl also tallied for the Kings.

According to Murphy, the Kings took the Bears a little lightly in the final game of the weekend. However, they snuck out a 4-3 win.

Despite their previous extended losing streak, the Kings can now fo-cus on the second half of the season and solidifying a playoff spot.

“We’d rather be in third chasing second, but we’ll accept where we are,” said the coach. “The (Christmas) break couldn’t come at a better time. We had more guys go down on the weekend … so this break is exactly what we need right now.”

Wheatland returns to action in the New Year, when they travel to Banff on Jan. 7, before hosting the Airdrie Thunder Jan. 7 (8 p.m.) at the Strath-more Family Centre.

The UFA Bisons are anxiously wait-ing to make a statement when they begin the 2011 Mac’s Midget Hockey Tournament Dec. 26 in Calgary.

The local triple-A midget team is one of the five host teams and will welcome the Vancouver NW Giants, the Beard’s Blackhawks, the Edmon-ton SSAC Athletics and the Sherwood Park Kings in Pool One.

Despite not playing up to their po-tential so far this season, Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen knows any-thing can happen in a short, week-long tournament.

“It’s a short-term competition, so it’s different than anything you pre-pare for throughout the entire sea-son,” said Friesen. “It is something you have to have discipline with (on and off the ice) – you need to take care of your body and hydrating, things like that.

“If you take one period off, that (could be) the end of your tourna-ment, so your margin of error is very small – that’s why this tournament tests every athlete that performs and every coach that’s involved as well. It tests them to their max and that is something (we) strive to do every day.”

The Mac’s Midget Hockey Tourna-ment held their annual Press Confer-ence Dec. 14 at the Westin Hotel in Calgary where the schedule was re-leased.

The Bisons will open the tourna-ment on Boxing Day when they take on the Vancouver NW Giants (10 a.m.) at the Max Bell Centre. The locals will have their ‘host game’ on

Dec. 27 (2:30 p.m.) at the Max Bell Centre when they face off against the Beardy’s Blackhawks.

From there, the Bisons will take on the Edmonton SSAC on Dec. 28 (2:30 p.m.) and the Sherwood Park Ennis Kings Dec. 30 (11:45 a.m.), with both games being played at the Father Da-vid Bauer Arena.

“We saw Sherwood Park twice at the beginning of the year and we had two great games against them, so we know what to expect out of those guys,” evaluated Friesen. “I don’t think that they’ve seen what we are capable of doing yet, and they might say the same thing about us. South Side is another team we’ve played once and had success against.

“Vancouver NW – that’s an elite program – that’s a world-known pro-gram for developing players and win-ning. They made it to the Telus Cup last year, so we’re expecting them to be strong again.

“Same thing with Beardy’s – anoth-er program known to take the next step and get players to another level.”

The 34th Annual Mac’s Tourna-ment will feature 25 teams in the male group, including KLH Chomu-tov from the Czech Republic and Sev-erstal/Locomotiv from Russia. The fe-male group will consist of 15 teams.

“I think we have a good chance,” said captain Mitch McAllister. “I’m very optimistic maybe, but I think we can play with each and every team. We definitely have a great shot to win our pool.

“We have a quick team, lot of people who can score goals. We’re sound defensively … on any given night, we have it all from the goal-tender out.”

Strathmore Handi BuS updateChristmas Day will soon be here and the Handi-Bus Board and

staff wish to remind our clients of the service for the holidays. All those wishing to use the service on Christmas day should be booked in already. Medical appointments for the week will be honoured if dispatch is notified. The dispatcher will be checking messages throughout the week.

As the year comes to an end and with the New Year approach-ing, the Board will be able to review our progress and plan for the future. Over the past year, we have revised our policies for clearer direction, revised the bus fees, became more diligent with bus maintenance and incorporated new board members. We were sadden to have lost a very valuable board member when Bruce Thompson succumbed to his battle with cancer and we regret Wanda Coldwell leaving her position as a representative from the Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary. Our Board now consists of members from the Legion[2], The Legion Auxiliary, the Strathmore District Health Services, the Wheatland Lodge, the Happy Gang, A Member at Large, Wheatland County, the Town of Strathmore, the Villageof Rockyford, the Village of Hussar and the Strathmore Lions Club.

With the help of donations from The Wheatland County, The Strathmore Lions, Strathmore Legion, Mary Kettenback, Alexandra Garriot, Rob Bauhauis, Vivian Noy, Gleichen/Cluny United Way, Rocky’s Bakery, Ladies Auxiliary Nevada, Standard Lionettes, Rosebud, Lions, Standard Legion, Doug Van Verdegem, Jim Engen and The United Church Women of Strathmore along with the annual funds from the Town of Strathmore, the service will be sustained for another year.

We thank all our clients for being patient with us as we strive to bring them the best service possible. It is inevitable that the cost of this type of service will keep increasing and it will be a constant struggle to maintain a service affordable to those on fixed income. We will forever depend on all donations, big and small.

We wish everyone a safe, wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy, Healthy 2012.

One Strathmore gymnast has shown she has what it takes to compete for a championship ti-tle at the Alberta Winter Games. Taylor Mathieu, 13, was in Red Deer competing for a spot earlier this month, and was fortunate to hear her hard work had paid off.

“She is the zone champion for Strathmore, zone two, but ended up second overall in her grouping, which is P3,” said Michele Mathieu, Taylor’s mom.

Taylor will compete in all four events - bal-ance beam, bars, floor and vault. Michele said the games are interesting because as far as she knows they compete for two days, and Taylor will have to qualify for each event and then again for each round.

“Vault…because it’s my best,” said Taylor of her favourite event.

Her least favourite thing about gymnastics is, “I don’t like the conditioning.”

Shawn Johnson, an American gymnast who competed in the 2008 Olympics, is an idol of Taylors.

“Because she got second at the Olympics, and she’s always willing to try new things,” said Tay-lor.

This is Taylor’s fourth year of competitive gym-nastics and her seventh year overall learning the skill of the sport. She was competing against gymnasts aged 10 to 17, and to earn a spot in

the Games is exciting for her and her family.Only two people from each zone are picked,

and at the Winter Games all eight zones from both Southern and Northern Alberta will com-pete against each other.

Though she originally began with Jumphouse Gymnastics, Taylor has moved on to compete with the Altadore Club in Calgary. Both mom and daughter spoke fondly of their time at Jump-house, saying Taylor only left to try to bring her gymnastics to a different level.

Krysta Van Verdegem, 12, is one of the girls Taylor trains with who also lives in Strathmore and competes out of the Altadore club.

“She’s moved just about two levels in one year,” said Taylor.

“She’s an amazing little gymnast,” said Michele. Though Van Verdegem won’t be competing in

the Winter Games, both Taylor and Michele said she should be proud of increasing two levels in such a short amount of time and that she is very talented and a fast learner.

“They both trained out here for many years in Strathmore but just decided that a move might do them good and help them achieve their goals for the future,” said Michele.

“They very much loved what happened at Strathmore gymnastics club, the girls, the coach-es, it was just all a very positive thing.”

The Alberta Winter Games takes place in Feb-ruary from the 9 to 12 in Spruce Grove. In March Taylor will be heading to Montreal to compete in the international competition Gymnix.

The UFA Bisons are heading into the 34th Annual Mac’s Midget Hockey tour-nament on a roll, defeating the top team in the league and collecting five out of a possible six points this past weekend.

The local triple-A midget team defeat-ed the No. 1 ranked Red Deer Rebels 5-4 on Dec. 16, before posting a 6-4 win over the Gregg Distributors the follow-ing day and a 1-1 draw against the K of C Pats on Dec. 18.

“Another point got away, but collect-ing five of six in a three-game weekend is very promising for us going into the Mac’s,” said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen. “There is no question (fatigue played a part in the final game), espe-cially when we had the emotional game on Friday night and going on the road for two games – that is a tough thing to overcome. At the end of the day, we came out with the points and I’m really proud of the way we played.”

Despite an ineffective power play, which has at times hurt this team throughout the season, the Bisons pen-alty kill was phenomenal this week-end. Friesen added that his team’s five-on-five play was outstanding this past weekend.

“I thought we stayed poised – we didn’t get too down all the time,” ex-plained the coach. “Three or four weeks ago, this team would have curled under that pressure and wouldn’t be able to challenge itself.

“We stuck to the game plan – our pen-alty kill was fantastic all weekend, but our power play was a little disappoint-ing.

“Five-on-five, when we establish our forecheck and dictate the way the game is going to go, we’re a pretty effective team.”

The Bisons, who entered the weekend

with a fourth place ranking in the South Division, opened the trio of games with a home win over the top-ranked Rebels.

After a couple of disappointing losses to the Calgary Buffaloes and the Leduc Oil Kings earlier this year, the Bisons proved that they can compete with any team in the league when they stick to their system.

“This was a big one – we’ve been looking at the schedule at this game for a while,” beamed Friesen after the win over the Rebels. “It is becoming quite the rivalry. They’re a great hockey team – they’ve got depth, they play a great game and they can finish.

“It was a good test to see where we stand up and see some areas where they exposed us (so we can) tighten up.

“All in all, I was very satisfied with our effort – there were a lot of positives for sure.”

Following the contest, Friesen warned his crew not to have a letdown after playing such an emotional game. The Bisons took the advice to heart, post-ing the win and tie over a pair of North Division opponents.

After the weekend was said and done, the Bisons improved to 12-5-6 on the season and are in the mix for the divi-sion lead with the Rebels, the Buffaloes and the NW Calgary Flames.

It sets up for an exciting stretch drive in the Alberta Midget Hockey League.

“We’re right where we want to be,” said Friesen. “We’ve given ourselves an opportunity to finish anywhere from first to fifth really. I think we’re really starting to figure out who we are (as a team) and playing our game on a con-sistent basis.

“We need to make sure we keep building on what we’ve done so far and getting better and better going down the stretch run.

“It’s going to be a very exciting time for us.”

Bisons on a roll

Alex Bechtold and the rest of the UFA Bisons defeated the top-ranked Red Deer Reb-els 5-4 on Dec. 16 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The team then hit the road for a pair of games, which they collected three out of four points.

Mel Boschee Ice Cats Ringette

The Strathmore Ice Cats participated in a mini tournament in Rockyford this past weekend. It was a fantastic day with great competition.

The Ice Cats, Strathmore Ice Devils, Calgary Vortex and Calgary Rush par-took in the Sunday fun. Ice Cats first game was against their hometown rivals the Ice Devils. The girls came to play to-day and performance was the name of the game. After the first period the Ice Cats were ahead 3-2.

When the second period started the Ice Cats turned it on and Tessa David-son, the Ice Cat’s net minder, was strong and solid. The Ice Cats left the ice sur-face with a 6-2.

With a win in their pocket their sec-ond game was against the Calgary Rush. The Ice Cats came out hard and fast but were a little flat. The Ice Cats fell to the Rush with a score of 10-3.

The girls then had some time to re-group. The park was close and time was spent with the team. The final game of

the day started with some sound com-petition, Calgary Vortex.

Ice Cats’ goalie Tessa Davidson was again rock solid. After the first period the Ice Cats were dead even with their competitors 4-4 was the score. The sec-ond period started and neither team was showing any fatigue. The Ice Cats were passing and shooting on net.

In the end the Ice Cats fell short of the Vortex with a score of 10-6. Strath-more goals were scored by Shelby Lane, Ainsley Olson, Cayley Boschee, Reagan Bogusky, Makayla Grant, Justine Larson.

Passing machines consisted of Mack-enzie Duggan, Megan Brooks, Hanna Arsenault and Laura Sader.

Unshakeable goalie Tessa Davidson was solid in net and the coaches orches-trated the bench were Lana Lane, Casey Grant and Kevin Brooks.

The Ice Cats sure missed Payton Jen-sen and Mackenzie Hansen. The Christ-mas season is upon us and we are proud of each and everyone of you. The Ice Cats will be taking a well deserved break and the next game will not be un-til the New Year.

KiM Bailie U12 ringette

Strathmore Black Ice, a U12 ringette team, played The Indus Lightning team on both Dec. 4 and 10. Both games were exciting to watch as the Black Ice girls skated hard, with pow-erful passes and tough defensive lines. The Indus Lightning put up a good fight, but in the end, Strathmore skat-ed home with the win in both games.

On Dec 17, their last game of this year, the Black Ice girls took on Aird-rie. This game was action packed right to the final moments, wherein Aird-

rie finally managed to pull ahead and sneak in the win.

Black Ice players are McKenna Blades, Holland Kelly, Ann Sauve, Grace Olson, Kaylin Larson, Brook-lynn Reinhart, Emily Bailie, Erin Reyn-olds, Kayley Bingham, Daylen Wathen, Camryn Hinz, Jaden Tashlikowich, Abby Hilton, and Kiersten Gron.

The Black Ice girls have had an incredible season thus far, thanks in part to solid coaching from Jan Wa-then, Rhoda Olson, Leanne Sauve and Guy Bailie. We look forward to what the new year brings this great group of girls.

Snoxell, leona1925-2011Revised

Leona Snoxell passed away suddenly, but peacefully, with her family by her side, at the Strathmore Hospital on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the age of 86 years. Leona leaves behind her loving family: daughters, Marlee Braithwaite of Bowden, Elaine (Will) Voth of Pincher Creek, and son, Roger (Lori) Snoxell of Lyalta; six grandchildren Lon (Colleen) Braithwaite of Innisfail, Leigh (Ryan) Feist of Dawson Creek, Lisa Voth of Vancouver, Joanna (Kevin) Voth of Singapore, and Jen and Jon Snoxell of Calgary; five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Tyson, Layton, and Mandi Feist, and Chloe Braithwaite. Leona was predeceased by Keith, her beloved husband of 41 years, on March 14, 1989, by her parents, Frances and Frank Golembiosky, her sister, three brothers, and most recently her precious great-grandbaby, Jillian Braithwaite, in 2010. Leona was born on February 19, 1925, in Ruzdiviana, Poland. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1931, farming near Grantham/Vauxhall, AB. After completing high school and Normal School (Calgary), Leona taught in one-room country schools for four years before her marriage to Keith on January 24, 1948. They farmed together on the original Snoxell homestead in the Lyalta district for almost 40 years. After Keith’s passing, Jen and Jon, the grandchildren next door, gave Leona much enjoyment over the next 12 years. In 2000, Leona moved into a new condo, The Courtyard, in Strathmore. She found fulfillment in showing kindness to others by sending special cards or flowers, visiting, making a phone call, or providing a meal or home-baked goods. These thoughtful acts exemplified her servant’s heart and her quiet faith in Jesus. In February of 2011, Leona moved to the Strathmore Lodge, where she spent her last ten months. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Strathmore United Church. Interment to follow at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
