The television series Dallas is back on theairwaves and like 20 years ago, people theworld over will be watching to see the anticsof J.R., Bobby Ewing and members of theirfamily. The opening episodes of the seriespresent a J.R. that is still a snake and a Bobbythat you would not want to date your son ordaughter.

What concerns me and others about thenew version of Dallas is the absence of peopleof color in the series. The first Dallas serieshad, at its best, black people as waiters andservants. It was disgraceful that the roles thatBlack people played in the oil and gas indus-try in Texas were never revealed in the series. It is hopeful that the new Dallas series willnot present the same inaccurate picture.

Texas state representative Helen Giddingsis among those who are concerned that thenew series should include more people ofcolor.

The state of Texas has given money to theseries as has the city of Dallas. RepresentativeGiddings said that the series should be moreracially inclusive.

Her position is held by many other electedofficials and other leaders in the state of Dal-las, particularly since taxpayer dollars aresupporting the series.

Dallas was a very important ambassadorfor our city. It brought visitors and touristsfrom near and far. I have a friend who had twoguests visit Texas from Uganda in east Africa. The very first place that they wanted to seewas South Fork Ranch, he said.

The Dallas series can still be a very impor-tant tool that gives people an understandingof how the energy business developed in ourstate. It is only fair that the portrayal includethe entire story. People of varied ethnicities, and especially Black people, were importantto the development of the industry. The con-tribution should be noted and included in thenew episodes of Dallas.

It is important to all of us.

Minister of the Week Student of the Week

A new book writtenby a New York Timesreporter reveals theracial history of thenation’s first lady,Michelle Obama. Thebook reveals that theFirst Lady has a num-ber of white relatives.DNA tests revealed, according to the book, that a distant relativeof the First Lady’s wasfathered by the son of

a slave owner, who was white. This is nothing new to those of us who are

students of American history. Slave ownersand their sons often slept with female slaves.Oftentimes they raped them and sometimesthere were actually true feelings of attrac-tion.

There were even instances when white fe-males had relationships with Black men. While in most communities it was againstthe law, interracial relationships have alwaysbeen a common practice in the Americanfabric.

If you look around the Black communityand look at the various shades of color thatexist you are quickly aware that racial so-cialization has taken place for a very, verylong time. I have known Black people whocould have passed for white and I haveknown Black people whose skin color wasas dark as the night sky at midnight.

Some of the white relatives of the FirstLady have said that they hoped that theycould visit the White House and visit theirkin, the President and their children. Onesaid that she hoped that the relationship thatproduced a child was a consensual relation-ship and not a rape. Another said that shehad seen pictures of Mrs. Obama’s great-great grandfather, the child born from the re-lationship, and had noticed his dark skin.

America must face the fact that is itquickly becoming a non-white nation.Fewer and fewer white people are havingchildren while the Hispanic birth rate risesand the Black birth rate is steady. Thechanging realities of the nation’s complex-ion are frightening to some. But those ofsober reflection understand that our futurewill be as great as our past.

If we all dig deep enough we will find thatthere are people of all colors in our back-grounds. In fact, there are some that say thatour current President is not the country’sfirst black President.

It was Dr. King who said that the day wascoming when people would be judged notby the color of their skin but by the contentof their character.

I am still eagerly awaiting the dawning ofthat morning.

Psalms 1281Blessed are all who fear the

Lord, who walk in his ways.2You will eat the fruit of yourlabor; blessings and prosperitywill be yours. 3Your wife willbe like a fruitful vine withinyour house; your sons will belike olive shoots round yourtable.4thus is the man blessedwho fears the Lord.5May theLord bless you from Zion allthe days of your life; may yousee the prosperity ofJerusalem,6and may you liveto see your children's children.Peace be upon israel.”

As a kid I got in trouble whenthe teacher called my parents tolet them know what they heardme telling another boy: "My dadcould beat up your dad!" I didnot understand the big deal. Imean, it was true, he could. Werethey gonna make him prove it orsomething?

Well, many of us believed ourdad was the greatest and we can-not all be right. But it is a specialrelationship, father son, or father.

A young couple took theirtwo-year-old daughter to thehome-improvement store. Shegot tired of walking, so the hus-band let her ride on his shoul-ders. As he walked, she beganpulling his hair.

Although he asked her to stopseveral times, she kept on. Get-ting annoyed, he scolded, "Madi-

son! Stop that!" "But, Daddy,"she replied, "I am just trying toget my gum back!

"God has ordained 3 great in-stitutions here on this earth: Thehome, the government, thechurch.

The oldest, and greatest ofthese institutions is the home. The church is a great institution, but is only as great as its homes. Our nation is great, though it hasbeen far greater, but it is only asgreat as its churches.

"As the home goes, so goesthe church, as the church goes,so goes the nation." Amen!

Through the years, much ofthe burden of having the rightkind of home has been placed on"mother."

But the Bible places most ofthe burden squarely in the lap of"Dad." It is Dad’s responsibilityto set the moral and spiritual ex-ample for the home/to see to itthat the Word of God is honoredand revered/take lead in mattersof discipline/make sure childrenare raised in nurture and admo-

nition of the Lord in churchfaithfully greatly increasing theirchances of being born again justas soon as they reach the age ofaccountability for them. ThankGod for Christian mothers, someof which have many of these re-sponsibilities fall to them, but re-member, dad will answer to Godfor it!

It was Joshua who said, "Asfor me and my house, we willserve the Lord." He was theleader of the band. Eve may havetaken that first bite, but Godcame looking for Adam!

We live in a day in which it isvery difficult to be a good man.It is even more difficult to be agood husband. But it is most dif-ficult to be a good dad.

The world has a warped con-cept of what it means to be agood dad. Just turn on the TVand you will know it is true.Have you noticed that the dad ofmost TV households is made outto be a buffoon and an idiot?Amen!

So, men, who can we patternourselves after if not ArchieBunker, Homer Simpson, or RayRomano?

Well, our standard should bethe Word of God and Psalms 128gives us some tremendous con-cepts on how to be a good dad,and how a family can best sup-port dad.

"Blessed" means to be con-gratulated. If you do the things inthe following verses, you should

be commended, congratulated. In the original language it’s plu-ral. It actually says it twice!Blessed, blessed is the man! Thatis double joy! But if you do notdo what this Psalm says, it willbe double trouble!

So, if you want double joy, ifyou want to be the best dad youcan be, if you want to be theleader of the band as you arecalled to be, then tune in to chan-nel 128 this week to see the dadthat God built:

1. CharacterFirst and foremost, a good dad

will fear God and walk in old-fashioned character and in-tegrity.

What will your kids remem-ber about you when you haveleft this life? What do some ofyou remember about your dad?

I wonder what my kids willremember about me. Will theyremember the things I boughtthem?

What did your dad buy you onyour 12th birthday? Do not re-member do you?

No, they will remember yourcharacter, whether good or bad.Allow me to read a letter nowthat I wrote to my dad, and sentto mom to hold and read there onFather’s Day.

Dear Dr. Hollie,

I am a mother of three teenage boys, and forthe most part, they are some good kids. How-ever, this summer, my youngest, who is 15, haschanged quite drastically. He’s been leavingthe house in the morning and not coming homeuntil late at night. I ask him where he’s beenand he just says he’s been with some friends. Itry to restrict him from going out, but once hisdad and I are at work, he does what he wants todo. He doesn’t listen and he won’t talk. Every-thing becomes an argument with him. My hus-band wants him out the house, but that is waytoo hard for me. I’ve been a go-between, try-ing to keep him under my roof. A few daysago, I was asking him if he wanted to talkabout anything. He got so angry at me that hegot so close to my face that our noses were al-most touching. I was really scared. My hus-band was not home, and he doesn’t know aboutthe incident. I am a little afraid of what my sonmay do, and I still don’t know what has gotteninto him. I know that when I tell my husbandabout our little incident, there will be no waymy son can remain in my home, but he is stillmy baby and I don’t want to just throw himout. Please tell me what I can do.

At a LossDear At a Loss,You have made a few serious mistakes:1. Allowing your son to disrespect yourhome by not enforcing a curfew2. Keeping his behavior a secret from yourhusband3. thinking your son is a babywhat you need to do is go “old school” and setsome rules and make him suffer whatever theconsequences.

A day without prayer is a day withoutblessings, and a life without prayer is alife without power. An hour spent withGod is worth a lifetime spent with man.Faith becomes all-power when faith is onit’s knees in prayer. Many people believein the power of prayer, and love to hear

about it, but few pray. Daniel would rather spend a night withlions than miss a day of prayer. Peter found it was easier toget out of jail than to get into a prayer meeting. While the be-lievers were praying for Peter’s safety, he was released byGod. Peter came to the house where they were praying. Thesaint saw him at the door and left him standing there becauseit was too good to be true.

Welcome to the weekend, Baaaby! Yaknow, Juneteenth almost snuck by me lastweekend. Celebrating Father's Day(Wow!),my daughters 21st Birthday (DoubleWow!)and vacation planning grabbed most ofmy attention. We were at church and some-body mentioned Juneteenth. I got home anchecked the Internet, seeing all kinds of localcelebrations and articles mentioning "our" hol-iday. Usually, I would have heard it on theradio, but with the advent of Pandora, Ipods,XM-Sirius and such. I have less patience for 5minutes of commercial listening built in atleast twice an hour on local Radio, thus Imissed what was happening from my normalsource. Perhaps if I was still ordering The Dal-las Morning News or Ft. Worth Star Telegram,I would have been alerted. Both newspaperand radio interaction seems to be moving to-wards the net. The netwas built for newspa-pers and I have no so-lution to keep papercopies relevant for anew generation ofreaders. It's so coolwhen my friends andrelatives from aroundthe world reach out tome about somethingI've written andthey've read atwww.dfwelitenews.com. You can alwaysemail me at [email protected].

As for Radio, here are my suggestions tomake you relevant for current and future gen-erations. You have to provide more music andpersonality!

1st, let's encourage Radio DJs to becomeentertainers again. One Steve Harvey, TomJoyner, Rickey Smiley, De De McGuire, SkipMurphy show per station is not enough any-more. Radio needs entertainers on every shift, kinda like the "Good Ole Days",lol!

The over saturated listener needs more thantime, temperature, weather, traffic, badly ed-ited "live" phone calls and contests to keep theattention of the 2012 listener!

2nd, take a lesson from the Internet and killall 60 second commercials. If you've noticed, most Internet commercials range from 5 to 30seconds. Many have an opt out after 5 sec-onds. I find it difficult to impossible to listento a :60 second radio or watch a :30 secondcommercial on the net. Radio should move to:15 and :30 second commercials, today, not to-morrow. So when it's time to play commercialsin stead of 5, :60's second commercials, play5 :30's and save the audience 2 and a half min-utes of babble. That adds up to at least 5 min-utes per hour if your fave station stops for stufftwice an hour or 7.5 minutes if it stops 3times. That means Radio gets to play two extrasongs each hour... Hello, lol..."Can you hearme now"??? Personally, I can find out aboutthe latest sale, be it a car dealership, grocerystore, fast food spot or whatever in 15 seconds. The old adage of "leaving them wanting more"has never been more perfect than now, forRadio. It's also easier to do something creativein :15 seconds rather than : 30 or :60. Even thebasics sound better, quicker. After having beenon both sides, creating commercials for every-body from Disney to Blackberries Nightclub

and now being a lis-tener, it's never beenmore obvious to methat Radio commercialpresentation needs anoverhaul, lol! There'sjust to much competi-tion. Can you remem-ber the last time youlistened to 5 minutes ofcommercials on your

fave local station to getto the next song? I thought not, lol. Plus adver-tisers lose out, as who ever hears the last 2 or3 commercials when Radio stops to play 5minutes of 'em...Okay, I'll get off my soap-box...Just keeping it real! Looking for somefun??? Funny dude George Lopez is at themajestic Tonight (6/23) and Saturday night.Blues Legend Buddy Guy and future legendJohnny Lang groove the Verizon Theater, Sat-

urday Evening andsexy Jill Scott playsthe Winstar in Okla-homa this Thurs-day(6/28)! Best newmovie out this week-end is "Abe Lincoln:Vampire Hunter"!Geez, it may be a goodweekend to catch upwith some of the pastfew weekends topflicks, such as Tom Cruise’s, "Rock of Ages","Prometheus" from the creator of the original"Aliens" movie Ridley Scott or "Snow Whiteand The Huntsman!” Happy Birthday to YOUand Celebrities this week: Lou Brock 73,Barry Manilow 66, Phylicia Rashad 68, Li-onel Richie 63, Paula Abdul 50, ClydeDrexler and Cyndi Lauper 49 and VenusWilliams is 32.

In a few weeks Jordan Giddings, who hasbeen one of the Dallas area’s premier highschool basketball stars for the past four years, will journey to Kansas where he earned a four-year athletic scholarship because of the skillsthat he displayed as a high school standout andhis conduct off the court.

A number of schools across the country pur-sued Jordan, who starred at Carter and Adam-son High Schools. He said he chose the schoolin Kansas because of the relationship that thecoach developed with him, and the academicprograms that the institution offers.

“While I want to play professional basket-ball, my long-range goals are to become asports journalist or to pursue a career in sportsmanagement,” said Jordan, who credits his par-ents, Shonda and Stan, members of his familyand his church with helping him to mold hislife.

“My parents always took me to church. Myfavorite scripture became you can do all things

through Christ who strengthens you,” said Jor-dan, who was raised spiritually in the Oak CliffBible Fellowship Church. “While growing upI managed to stay away from the temptationsof the streets. I did not have time to waste mylife.”

Jordan, 18, will be attending Southwest Uni-versity in Winfield, Kansas. The school listedhim as their primary basketball recruit. “Jordanwanted to attend a four year school,” said hisfather, who coaches women’s basketball atSouthwest Christian College in Terrell, Texas, which also bidded for his son’s talents for themen’s program.

“He has basketball skills and he has an in-terest in journalism,” Giddings said. “I wanthim to use his passions and his talents to be acitizen that makes a contribution to society. Itis now time for him to travel the paths that hewants to pursue.”

Jordan said that he wanted his life and hismost recent accomplishment to be an examplefor other young people.

“My message to other young people is topursue your dreams and understand that

dreams can come true. I want them to under-stand that they must begin to think about whatthey should do with their lives.”

Numerous people, he said, including hisgreat-grandmother, Catherine Ferguson and hisgrandmother, state Representative Helen Gid-dings (D-Dallas), have played monumentalroles in his life. “Both of them have given me

advice and have been examples of how to livea full life,” he said. An older brother, Marcus, has given Jordan valuable advice about how tobe successful in college. “He told me to pursuemy studies and to always spend time in thegym,” Jordan said. “Marcus has encouragedme to keep a ball in my hands and to do thevery best that I can.”

And Jordan gets nothing but praise from hiscoaches.

“Jordan is a very solid kid who played aleadership role on our team at Carter, said as-sistant basketball coach Brian Jordan. “He willbe a fantastic college basketball player and agreat student. We are very proud of him.”

The coach said that Jordan was an examplefor younger players and was a good student inthe classroom. “He never presented his coachesor his teachers with any problems,” he said.

“I want to return to Dallas after I completemy education,” said Jordan. “I want to spendsome time with my family and my friends be-fore I go to see the rest of the world,” he said.

There was a time whenBishop Jakes and First LadySerita Jakes did not have enoughmoney to feed themselves andtheir small children. Thirty yearsago, the Bishop’s ministry wasin its infancy in West Virginia, yet his faith was as high as thetallest peak in The Blue RidgeMountains. There were dayswhen he was unable to pay themeager rent on his church yet hepreserved, not seeking greatnessbut searching for grace.

Preaching for the first time as aboy he did not intend to reachthe rich and the famous with hismessages. That was not hisdream. In his heart he was com-fortable with those who pulledcoal from the hillsides and whodrove nearly broken cars andtrucks to their places of employ-ment, if they were fortunateenough to work at all. Yet, God had a larger plan for

the gifted young preacher whoas a small boy was known asT.D., a plan that would one daymake him the most engaging andsignificant clergyman on theface of the earth. It was a planthat would one day make him afrequent guest in the WhiteHouse where he counseled presi-dents, and one that took him toprincipalities where he prayedfor royalty. And befittingly, onJune 8th in downtown Dallas inthe splendidness of the AT&TPerforming Arts Center/Win-spear Opera House, thousandscame out to honor Bishop Jakesfor giving thirty-five years of his

life to ministry and for helpingto shape their lives, and the lifeof the world in which they live.“Bishop Jakes’ ministry hastransformed the lives of millionsof people and has affected mil-lion of families,” said MarkJones, who has attended the Pot-

ter’s House in Dallas, where theBishop ministers, for the past tenyears with his wife, Jill.“Men especially are touched by

his humility and his humble-ness,” said Jones, a Dallas basedbusiness owner. “He always hasan uplifting word for people. Heunderstands the issues that con-front people.” The event wasplanned by the Bishop’s wife, anoted speaker and successful au-thor. He did not know whowould attend and how manypeople would be present. He hadno idea that people such asOprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry,Soledad O’Brien, Shirley Cae-sar, Paula White and ChakaKhan would be among thosewho attended.

Reverend George Holmes, anational church figure whoworks with some of the nation’sleading political figure, flew

from Washington, D.C. to be atthe event. Bishop Jakes has aunique ministry that transcendsage groups, economic standingsand race,” he said. “His preach-ing makes all of us understandthat no matter what our faultsthat we are included in God’sgrace.” His comments wereechoed by Reverend DeniseMitchem, a member of the NewBirth Baptist Church in Atlantawho came to celebrate BishopJakes. “I came to celebrate agreat man of God,” she said. “Ihave known him for twenty fiveyears and his ministry has blos-somed as if it was a great flowerin God’s garden.”

Reverend Bernice King, theyoungest of Dr. Martin LutherKing Jr.’s four children, said thatthe Potter’s House, under BishopJakes’ leadership, had developeddrinking wells in Africa andcomforted hurricaine victims inthe United States. “He cares forpeople in the homeland and themotherland,” she said. “BishopJakes is an anointed individualwho has a special relationshipwith God,” said businesswomanIsabelle Cottrell who has been amember of the Potter’s Housesince it opened in Dallas. “Hismessage hav helped me throughsome of the most difficult mo-ments in my life. His sermonskeep me going. They empowerme and they give me strength. He provides his members withspiritual food,” she said.Visiblythat he had been

Dick Gregory - Fighting the good fight

Dick Gregory shares a message with Dr. Martin Luther KIng, Jr.

Page 12: June 22, 2012 Volume 52 Number 25

History was made Tuesday whenRev. Fred Luter Jr of New Orleans waselected as the first Black President of theSouthern Baptist Convention. Afterserving as the Vice President Luter ranunopposed as the organizations newestleader.

Luter is the Pastor of Franklin AveBaptist Church in New Orleans. In1986 Franklin Avenue Baptist Churchwas a small congregation on only 65members. By 2005 Luter had grown hismembership to a 7,000 member church.Today, it is still one of the largest South-ern Baptist Churches in the state ofLouisiana.

Luter is not afraid of hard work or chal-lenges. In 2005 Hurricane Katrina notonly displaced his church but his home. While the community rebuild and hischurch was being restored Luter contin-ued to serve his congregation althoughthey were scattered throughout the coun-try. From 2006 he held services in NewOrleans, Baton Rouge and Houston. Itwasn’t until 2008 did Franklin AvenueBaptist Church reopen its doors and heldservices for its member in one location.

Luter feels that through the experiencesof Hurricane Katrina and his steadfastnesshe is uniquely qualified to lead the SBCto new opportunities and continued unifi-cation.

To understand the importance of Luter

being the first black President of the SBCyou must understand the history of Au-gust Georgia and the SBC. AugustaGeorgia was founded in 1736 by JamesOglethorpe who banned slavery in Au-gusta until it was taken over as a BritishColony. With a new constitution in 1735slavery became the norm for Augusta.Augusta and the SBC held a foundationthat rich in the old southern traditions thatwe as African Americans are challengedby.

The Southern Baptist Convention isrooted in Augusta, Georgia and organizedin 1845 by slaveholders. They brokeaway from the National Baptist Conven-tion when due to their position of slavery.Today The SBC is one of the largest or-ganizations in the United States. Theyhave over 16 million members who wor-ship at over 45,000 churches throughoutthe United Sates.

Things changed in 1995 at the SouthernBaptist Convention’s (SBC) 150 anniver-

sary when the leadership formallyapologized to blacks for the positionthey held on slavery and their supportof white supremacy. They haveworked to change their racial foot-print and to become an organizationbased on inclusion of all people. Al-most 20 years later The SBC now hastheir first black president and possiblya major step in real unification.

Luter knew going in that he has achallenge ahead of himself. Last Febru-ary Luter told the Baptist Press that he feltlead to help solve the church’s divisiveracial heritage. Luter says that it is nowtime to close the books on what once TheSBC use to stand for and to move forwardwith new ideas.

In his early days of being a streetpreacher Luter learned the art of grabbingyour attention quickly and giving youenough information to keep your attentionfocused on the information he was tryingto share with you. He is still know to uti-lize that same method in how he deliversmessages today. With also being a megachurch Luter still has the unique ability toreach his members and not allow thenumbers stand as a barrier between himand members.

Is it possible that Luter can be the cat-alyst that will not only unit The SBC withthe black churches but The SBC with theNational Convention? Is it possible thatthis is the first step in a paradigm shift inthe Baptist church where we all standunited in Christ and not the cause?
