THE MESSENGER 207 S. Court St.
Marysville, OH 43040
Phone: 937-642-4712
www.marysvillefumc.org June, 2018
Here at FUMC, we have a bold vision to
transform the world. Such a vision can only be
accomplished by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Our memory verse for June gives us some insight
into how we can receive this gift of power. It is
taken from Peter’s sermon on the day of
Pentecost, “Repent and be baptized, every one
of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive
the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38
It is interesting that Peter said these words to a
group of people who already believed in God. The
crowd that gathered to hear this sermon were
“God-fearing Jews.” (Acts 2:5) They had traveled
to Jerusalem from all around the world because
they believed in God. But Peter makes it clear
that believing in God is not enough. If we want
God to fill us with the Holy Spirit, we must come
to Jesus in repentance for the forgiveness of our
sins. The word “Repent” means more than to just
say we are sorry. It means to turn away from our
sins and to turn towards Jesus. When we repent,
we surrender our lives to Jesus. Then we can be
filled with humility, unity and passion, and God
can use us for His glory.
Baptism is an outward sign that we have taken
this step of repentance. If you are interested in
baptism, we will have an outdoor immersion
baptism service on August 12 or you can be
baptized with a handful of water during any
church service. Both methods are equally valid.
Simply contact a pastor if you are interested in
baptism for yourself or your child.
My prayer and desire is that every one of us will
live a life of repentance, be baptized and will
experience repeated spiritual breakthroughs
through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Aaron
This summer we will continue preaching from
the first eight chapters of Acts in a sermon series
entitled “Life in the early church.” As we look at
the lives of these first followers of Jesus, we
discover insight into our own walk with Christ. I
encourage you to read these eight chapters
several times in the next few weeks. The book is
called “Acts of the Apostles” (Acts for short)
because it tells the story of what the disciples did
after Jesus returned to heaven. But a better title
could be “Acts of the Holy Spirit,” because
everything the early church accomplished was
done through the power of the Holy Spirit. The
Spirit was the promised gift given to the church
at Pentecost.

DISTRICT PRAYER REQUEST
We are praying through the list of all the United Methodist Churches and pastors in our

• Milford Center UMC – Rev. Pam Connolly. Please pray for our congregation as we seek to en-
gage our community in needs-oriented ministry, and continue the visioning process.
• Marion Oakland UMC – Mr. Mike Fogle and Rev. Jerry Frazee
• Middleburg UMC – Rev. Rick Riggs. Please pray for our church during this time of a new pastor
transition.
• Marion Prospect Street UMC – Rev. Therese Lehman
• Maynard Avenue UMC – Rev. Patricia Wagner
• Marysville First UMC – Rev. Aaron Brown and Rev. Peggy Hoy. Please pray for a newly
formed Equip Team-spiritual growth for our church and new classes offered, and the recent ‘Grab,
Gather, Grow’ small group event
• Rev. Aaron Brown shares this prayer:
• Father, unleash the power of the Holy Spirit to bring spiritual breakthrough in my life, in our church
family, and in our community. Fill us with humility, unity, and passion. Let your kingdom come
and your will be done. May the name of Jesus be held in high honor in all that we say and
do. Amen.
• Meeker UMC – Rev. Kathy Herr. I would like to ask prayer for ignition! What I mean by that is
that I am preaching about the power of the Holy Spirit. I pray that a fire is re-ignited in our church
and that we would make our boundaries limitless as we serve our limitless God!

Come be REFRESHED at Combined
Worship Service
On Sunday July 1, our church family will join
together for a combined worship service. We
will meet at 10:00 am in the BFLC for a time
of refreshing and fellowship. It will include
lots of music, both traditional and contempo-
rary as well as communion. Rather than
pancakes, a simple picnic lunch will be served
after the service.
TESTIMONIES NEEDED
One of the powerful ways that God speaks to
us is through the personal testimony of those
we know and trust. As we continue our study
in the first eight chapters of Acts, we would
like to hear some of you share how God has
been working in your life. Your testimony
should be 2-5 minutes and can be given live, or
we would be happy to video your testimony.
Here are some of the specific testimonies we
are looking for:
• June 3: Hearing from God. We are look-
ing for a testimony of when God spoke very
clearly to you through a dream, vision,
word of prophesy or other means?
• June 24: Baptism We are looking for a
testimony of the impact of baptism in your
life.
• July 8: Healing We are looking for those
who can give a testimony of God’s healing
or lessons learned when God did not heal.
• July 15: Grace Do you have a story when
you were amazed by God’s grace?
• August 5: Persecution Have you experi-
enced persecution as you follow Jesus?
• August 26: Salvation We would love to
have several 2-minute testimonies on how
you came to follow Jesus.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES AND
HELP ARE NEAR!
Life in our community has changed over the
years with many of our families trying to cope
with mental health challenges. The issues are
numerous: drug and alcohol, mental illness,
kids/teens with high risk behaviors, aging and
dementia, relationship difficulties, etc.... Does
your family or your neighbor in the community
need support, education, resources, or advoca-
cy with any mental health issues? We’re here
for you and them, to give hope and help, as we
“love our neighbor.” John 10:10 in part says, “ I
have come that they may have life, and have it
to the full.” We want all of our brothers and
sisters to have life, a life to the fullest! Please
call if you have a need.

A NOTE ABOUT APPORTIONMENTS -
CLERGY BENEFITS
We have had a few questions from members of
our congregation concerning the effect on
Marysville FUMC’s pastors due to the decision
made at the Church Conference in December
to withhold apportionments to the conference
and the district until a long-lingering
disciplinary issue within the conference is
resolved. Rest assured that our pastors have
always and continue to receive their housing,
compensation and health insurance benefits
from our local church and the salaries and
benefits of our pastors are not affected by
apportionments being paid or withheld. Also,
we are continuing to pay into their pension
accounts and once our pastors retire, their
pensions will be paid out of a trust account
that they have paid into throughout their
pastoral careers and are also unaffected by
apportionments. The portion of
apportionments to the conference that are
allotted for “clergy benefits” are used to pay
disability benefits and health insurance
benefits of pastors that have successfully
retired from the West Ohio Conference and
their dependents.

The Gospel of St. Luke relates the story of the risen Christ ap-
pearing to two who were going along the road from Jerusalem to
Emmaus. Two friends were walking together, sharing their
hearts’ deepest concerns. The risen Christ joined them and ex-
plained the scriptures as they walked, how it was ordained that
Christ should suffer and so enter his glory. This experience on
the road was a heart - warming experience as the risen Christ
walked and talked with them. The illuminating climax of the ex-
perience was when Christ took bread and said the blessing, then
broke it and gave it to them. The two had their eyes opened and
they recognized him as the risen Christ and they rushed back to
Jerusalem to tell the others. (Luke 24:13-35)
A JOURNEY WITH CHRIST
The above story provides the image for Emmaus, an Upper Room program that calls Christians to a renewed
commitment to Jesus Christ. It has nothing to do with physical walking. The Walk to Emmaus is a three-
day experience which takes a New Testament look at Christianity as a lifestyle. It is a highly structured
weekend designed to strengthen and renew the faith of Christian people. The focus of Emmaus is Jesus
Christ and the grace he gives to His Body the church. Emmaus is a combined effort of laity and clergy to-
ward the renewal of the church. Emmaus is non-denominational and people from all denominations are en-
couraged to participate.
WHAT HAPPENS AT EMMAUS?
There is nothing secret about the Walk to Emmaus. It is not a secret club or a group of “holier-than-thou”
Christians. Often times those who have gone on a walk choose not to share everything that happens so that
a new pilgrim will enjoy some of the “pleasant surprises” that take place during the weekend. The “Walk to
Emmaus’ is a 72 hour experience. The weekend begins on Thursday evening and ends Sunday evening.
You will live and study together in singing, prayer, worship, and discussion. Discussions center around fif-
teen talks given by laity and clergy. These talks present the theme of God’s grace, and how that grace comes
alive in the Christian community and expresses itself in the world. You’ll also discover how grace is real in
your life, and how you can live in the life of grace, bringing grace to others. You will have the opportunity to
participate in the daily celebration of Holy Communion, and to begin to understand more fully the presence
of Christ in his body of believers. You will experience God’s grace personally through the prayers and acts of
service of a living support community.
CENTRAL OHIO EMMAUS COMMUNITY
Over 4000 people have participated in the Walk to Emmaus in Central Ohio since the community started
over 30 years ago. There have been 71 weekends for men and 124 weekends for women. Walks take place at
the Marysville First United Methodist Church.
Many people from our congregation have experienced the joy of this retreat. We want to invite you to join in
a refreshing weekend spent meeting Jesus as he comes to you through other Christians. This is a wonderful
opportunity for Christians of all ages. For more information on Emmaus, contact one of the pastors or check
out the website: http://centralohioemmaus.org

Forgiveness is not an easy task! To forgive is a divine attribute. It is to pardon or excuse someone from blame for

sins and seek His forgiveness. He also commands us to forgive those who offend or hurt us. BUT IT AIN’T
EASY! Come and join us as we journey through the process….seeking peace in our hearts! To register contact

“Living In The Different” The Passages through sorrow and loss
By Rev. Elaine J. Clinger Sturtz
Meet the Author Night @ MFUMC in Burnside Conference Room
Friday June 29th 6:30-7:30 w/DESSERT!
Excerpt from the Book
“These words come from a heart that has been broken, felt the pain and loss of the most important person in my life,
and also found hope in the midst of the grief.”
Descripon of Book
Elaine Sturtz, shares in Living In The Different, that grief is messy, hard, painful, filled with tears and loneliness, but
also includes faith, hope and love. She walks through the journey, the emo$ons, the changes and hurts. Each grief is
different, and grief changes our lives. We are different, and how we live and interact with others is different. The
journey of grief takes different forms as we learn to live and mingle joy and sorrow together. Elaine offers hope, a
hope of hope, through these passages of sorrow and loss. Hope is found in our faith in God who is love, and love nev-
er ends.
Endorsement of Book
“In Living In The Different, Reverend Sturtz sets us free to live, grieve, die and live again by pouring into us out of her
experience, both deep and wide, as person, pastor, chaplain and friend. She offers what she knows in her head and
heart with transparency and vulnerability.”
Bishop Gregory V. Palmer
Resident Bishop of the West Ohio Conference

Marysville FUMC- VBS Week! At Shipwrecked VBS, kids discover not only
that God made them the way they are, but for a purpose too. Shipwrecked is
filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences where kids can see, hear,
touch, and experience God’s love for them. Team building games, cool Bible
songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help
faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kinds might get a little messy. Be sure to
send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we’ll help kids discover how to see evidence of
God in everyday life- something we call God sightings. VBS will run from June 18-22, 2018
from 9:00 am to noon. Children ages 4 years to current 4th graders are welcome to join us for a
fun-filled week as we explore our Rescuer-God!
Registration begins in May and forms are available in this Messenger and at the VBS tables
outside all three services on June 3rd. T-shirt orders ($10) and CD sales ($7) will also take
place on these dates. If you miss these opportunities, you may also pick up registration and t-
shirt/CD order forms at the church office or download them from the church website:
www.marysvillefumc.org
It takes a lot of energy to run an island! The 250+ hungry kids will enjoy their Tropical Treats to
replenish their bodies as we rejuvenate their souls. There will be a snack board in the BFLC en-
trance beginning in May. There are posts containing a food item that we need for the week.
Please pick one and return the purchased item(s) to the collection boxes in the BFLC entrance
no later than Friday, June 15th. No time to shop but still want to help? You may take a note
with a suggested cash donation to help fill in the gaps. We couldn’t feed our campers without
your help. Thank you for supporting our Vacation Bible School!
