Project Dragoste (Love)

Another Child Foundation is excited to be the recipient of support from the upcoming Project

Dragoste (Love) event being held in Cambridge, Illinois on July 23. Event coordinator Damian

DeKezel traveled to Romania to serve the children Another Child has been helping last summer

(2016). Since that time Damian has looked for opportunities to advocate for these precious children.

The results of that passion resulted in Project Dragoste. A day of fun and fellowship. This event has

something for everyone. Games, food and praise music. It is going to be a day you don’t want to miss. Many area churches and

individuals are taking part in this fun event.

SAVE THE DATE!! Come join local churches as we have a day of tournaments, fun, and music to celebrate the collection of shoes

and supplies to send to Romanian orphanages to help children in need. Registration coming soon for “Shots for Shoes” 3 on 3

basketball tournament and “Spiking for Shoes” volleyball tournament. A dinner & concert from your local praise bands (traditional and

contemporary) will follow. There is something for everyone to enjoy in support of a good cause!

he Apostles’ Creed has roots to the Old Roman Creed from the third century. Today The Creed is still an important confession of

our faith. It is a sound testimonial summary of what The Bible tell us about God the Father as Creator, Jesus the Son our Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit who calls us through the Gospel. Martin Luther says this Creed is a scripturally sound way to confess our faith. This is why the great reformer Luther places it in the very heart of The Small Catechism.

To help us reflect on the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation this year, our ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and our Northern Illinois Synod Bishop Jeff Clements both ask us to take a renewed look at The Small Catechism. This is why last

summer we had a twelve week sermon series on The Ten Commandments. You might recall during midweek Lenten worship and into Holy Week how we focused on The Lord’s Prayer.

Now, for the first three Sundays in June our homilies will be on The Apostles’ Creed. I hope you will come to hear the importance of confessing that Jesus is Lord with your lips.

Northern Illinois Synod Assembly – June 16-17, 2017

The 30th Annual Northern Illinois Synod Assembly will be held at Augustana College, Centennial Hall, 3703 Seventh Avenue,

Rock Island on Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Something special this year

This year music and worship leadership will be provided by the Glocal Musician-Educators of the ELCA. These musicians were formed by ELCA Global Mission to provide musical leadership for the Glocal Mission Gatherings hosted by congregations and other Christian communities throughout North America and the Caribbean. Through its

intentional diversity—including representation from many countries, denominations, and several cultures—the group embodies ways to stand in mutual solidarity while amplifying marginalized voices.

In addition to offering worship that includes global voices, the musicians are committed to forming local leaders seeking to introduce global themes in their communities. The songs they teach are grounded in the community stories that raise awareness and inspire advocacy. The musicians embody what it means to be Glocal—simultaneously global and local—so we can accompany one another across cultures, even in our own neighborhoods.

Northern Illinois Synod Assembly 2017 IN-KIND OFFERING

For 150 years, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) has been a leader in child welfare services, and is one of the largest providers of foster care services in Illinois. LSSI serves approximately 2,500 children each year; currently 558 of them in the Northern Illinois Synod through offices in Rock Island, Galesburg, Nachusa, and Rockford. http://www.lssi.org/.

Often, children are unable to be placed in a home because of the simple absence of a smoke/carbon monoxide detector.

Your donation will help children in need of a safe and loving home to be placed quickly.

Gift cards take up little room in the small spaces of LSSI offices and can be used for:

Awarding a child who has met a goal on their service plan

Helping a foster family get prepared to take in a child

Providing clothing and other necessities to a child when first being placed

Purchasing items for projects and activities at group sessions and family therapy

Providing a gas card to a family so they can get to necessary appointments

Providing Birthday, Christmas and other gifts to children throughout the year

Purchasing school supplies

Taking a child or family out to eat for a special occasion

June 21—Escape Room Chicago Meet at church at 9 am. Cost is $35 plus money for lunch.

June 30—Board Games Night at 7 pm in St. Matthews Fellowship Hall.

July 15—Peoria Chiefs baseball game. Meet at church 4:30 pm. Cost is $12 plus money for food.

Aug 30—Back to School Cookout at 5:30 pm at Stover’s house. Bring a dish to pass and chair.

Lutheran World Relief

Here we are in June already where did May go. We are working on the Personal Care Kits yet this month although they can be made anytime. We have 10 kits almost completed and need to think on doing another 30. If you don't want to do a complete kit, buy several of the items that go in the kits and we will complete them or put them together. We need dark bath towels, toothbrushes, large sturdy combs, fingernail clippers and soap(2 bars per kit). Just drop the items in the LWR box.

The soap tub is out so look for soap bargains and fill the tub. Let's try to fill it twice.

Our busy-bee sewer, Marilyn H. has been busy making school bags for later and sewing items for the baby care kits. If you have or know of anyone who might have slightly used baby tee shirts, sleepers, receiving blankets, socks, hooded sweaters or sweatshirts. Again just put them in the LWR box. Thanks so much for caring.

WUNT LUNCH IN THE PARK is Friday, June 9 11 am– 1 pm. We have been asked to help with condiments for WUNT Lunch in the Park date. Sign up sheet is in the Narthex. Support them by stopping by for lunch.

in our St. Matthews Fellowship Hall St. Matthews Stewardship Committee and Council invite interested members to learn how you can

share gifts with St. Matthews (and with Christ’s Larger Church) that go beyond your regular offerings.

There are sometimes ways to give with tax break advantages for members in their active years, or to

plan for a member’s regular giving to continue from their estate.

We have invited Tim Urness from our ELCA Foundation to share examples and opportunities which

may be of interest in Gift Planning and Legacy Giving. This is for your information only and is not a

Lunch is appropriately furnished by our St. Matthews Memorial Fund.

To help us plan for lunch, please RSVP on the sign-up sheets in the narthex

or outside pastor’s office.

Your St. Matthews Stewardship Committee and Council invite you to participate in a synod wide mission opportunity.

St. Matthews is participating in our Northern Illinois Synod goal to raise $100,000 to $200,000 synod wide to help acquire/renovate or to build an educational facility for the Arusha Lutheran Medical Center School of Nursing located in our companion synod, the North Central Diocese, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, Africa. The school (which began in 2014) must have it’s own facility to keep its license and accreditation. FYI - St. Matthews companion congregation, Elerai Lutheran Parish, is in Arusha, Tanzania.

Our Northern Illinois Synod’s challenge is for each congregation in our Synod to raise $10 per person based on our average worship attendance. For St. Matthews (with a 105 average) this would be $1050, but leaders at St. Matthews wish to raise the bar for us locally to $12.24 (or $13) per our worship average combined with a matching fund challenge.

With special offering envelopes for The Nursing Project - Tanzania, St Matthews will match each dollar given by you, the people of St. Matthews, with another dollar from our Lydia Miller Bequest World Scholarship Fund which has a balance of $1285. (FYI – Lydia Miller was a nurse.) If we receive $1285 ($12.24 x 105) in special offerings, with a match from the Lydia Miller Bequest, we could possibly share a gift of $2570 with our Christian neighbors in Tanzania.

July 20 at St. Paul’s Lutheran (Dixon) Dr. Mark and Linda Jacobson will present a program (with meal) on this project.
