Our island seems quieter, and our lives seem less full. Even those of us who remain here are periodically out of town visiting friends in cooler climates or taking summer vacations to get away from the heat of Savannah. Perhaps it is this heat that makes us move slowly or do less. There is definitely a different rhythm to our island lives. JWOL also slows down, but we still have some summer functions in which you can participate. Since most of us are less scheduled during this time, I hope you will be free to join us at the Summer Social in July. Details will follow as soon as they are finalized. Why not attend the Movie Club on July 13 or the Book Club on July 20? Whatever your Summer plans, travel safe and enjoy! Flowers From Berlin by Noel Hynd

Monday, July 20, 9:30 AM Hosted and reviewed by Doris Goldstein 3 Pennefeather Lane RSVP: Judy Weiner -1988 or [email protected]

Flowers From Berlin by Noel Hynd remains one of the standards of suspense / espionage fiction. The story takes place in 1939 on the eve of World War II. Nazi Germany is brash and self-confident. The West, including the US, is confused and indecisive. Isolationist sentiment is on the rise, and Roosevelt’s popularity is at a low. Seeing an opportunity,

Hitler dispatches his top agent to the US on a mission of sabotage and espionage, which evolves into an attempt to kill the president.

Determined to stop him is a maverick FBI agent, William Cochrane. “Eye of the Needle” is most similar to “Flowers from Berlin” but with an even creepier bad guy, played so brilliantly by Donald Sutherland in the movie. All-in-all though, “Flowers From Berlin” remains a genre classic that deserves to be reread. Best of all, unlike so many of today’s suspense novels, it is a good stand alone story with its own unique, memorable characters. Noel Hynd has written a fast-paced and masterful tale of espionage and suspense. This novel reads fast and furious-gripping you with its characters and its twists. Every page is engrossing and intelligent, compelling the reader forward even unto the very end.

Our next Book Club meeting will be in September. The book we’ll be discussing is The Jewish Daughter Diaries by Rachel Ament. Nancy Bader will be reviewing.

"Get Reel Inspired"

We all know that one of the cornerstones of Judaism is Tikkun Olam, the shared responsibility we all have to repair the world. Come watch the inspiring work of one man, social worker Dan Cohen, who uses music to unlock the memories of Alzheimer patients. Alive Inside is a story of Music and Memory. It is an emotional documentary that has gotten rave reviews. Reserve your seat now for the July 13th showing, 9:30am, at 16 Robert Reid Court by emailing: [email protected] or [email protected]. Hope to see you at the movie. Sheila and Annette
