TEMPLE SINAI’S DAILY MINYANAre you aware that Temple Sinai has the enviable distinction of
being the only Conservative synagogue in Hollywood and one ofthe few in Broward County that has consistently maintained anEgalitarian morning and afternoon Minyan every day of the week? This cherished treasure has continued unabated for 70 years, sincethe Temple’s establishment in 1942.
We gather every morning at 8:00 am (Monday-Friday & Sundayat 9:00 am) and at 5:30 pm in our chapel. What is a Minyan? Theword “Minyan” refers to a quorum of ten Jews over the age of ma-jority (thirteen for males, twelve for females). Certain prayers re-quire a quorum because of communal affirmation. This is especiallytrue of prayers that assert divine sanctity and comprise the Kedushain the Amidah, as well as various forms of the Kaddish. There is alongstanding tradition of saying the Kaddish after the death of aparent and other close relatives. There is also the custom of recitingthe Kaddish on the anniversary (Yahrzeit) of a loved one’s passing.Kaddish is an ancient prayer in Aramaic that expresses themourner's faith in God and a profound desire for peace.RecitingKaddish for a parent is a fulfillment of the commandment "Honoryour father and your mother."
On Monday and Thursday mornings there is a comforting, in-formal and inspiring reading of the Torah by Rabbi Goldenholz.
Numerous honors are available that include aliot, Gabi, davening, raising and dressingthe Torah and abundant readings in English.
Who comprises our minyan? It is men and women, parents and teens, singles andcouples, mourners and celebrants, drop-ins and regulars, members and visitors, andthose who come out of obligation and those who come to experience prayer. While wehave been relatively successful at maintaining our morning and evening minyan, a smallpercentage of our Temple Sinai community shoulders the weight of responsibility. Thereis a relatively small group of people who have dedicated specific mornings and eveningsto ensure a minyan. As Rabbi Goldenholz reminds us that the true essence of minyan,is to come together in prayer to feel strengthened and comforted in the presence of oth-ers. We collaborate in prayer to declare the holiness of God, and to sanctify God’s namein public. There is this enormous feeling to recognize that you are vital, that your pres-ence counts and without your participation the community lacks inclusiveness.
About 30% - 40% of our Min-yan attendees consist of young men and women - a remarkable mitzvah. A funda-mental reason for a young person to come to Minyan is based on the importance ofbelonging to a Jewish community; a group of worshippers sharing a common inter-est. As described by Abraham Joshua Heschel … "our ability to pray depends uponour being part of a community. How can we forget that our ability to pray we oweto the community and to tradition. We never pray as individuals, set apart from therest of the world. Every act of worship is an act of participating." [Siddur SimShalom, page XI].
In the midst of our frenetic lives, the Minyan is an oasis of peace, quiet, and prayer. You will attain a sense of calmness, camaraderie, tranquility and inner peace, andbond with our traditions. You will acquire a deeper insight into the value of prayer.Further, you will restore yourself at the beginning and end of the day.
Join us, not as spectators, but as members of the“minyan family.” Together we cancreate a true kehilla kedosha (a sacred community). The minyan prayers offer an ex-traordinary amount of gratification and will nurture your neshama. After the morn-ing minyan we chat and kibbutz. Every morning bagels and coffee are provided.Often breakfast is sponsored in “Café Du Naomi !with a cornucopia of bagels, creamcheese, herring, tuna, egg salad, cakes & coffee. Please join us.With love and Shalom, Shammai Taplin Minyan Representative to the Board of GovernorsMal Golden, member, Board of Governors.

SISTERHOOD NEWSWith summer upon us, let’s take a look back at Sisterhood’s ac-
tivities during the past year. We have been busy. The year startedwith a lovely paid-up dues luncheon. We held a Hanukkah StudySession, Sisterhood Sabbath, a very successful Purim “ShalachManot” project, Passover Pot Luck Dinner, a Chocolate LoversEvening and a super Torah Fund Luncheon. We have supervisedkiddushim and had a belly dancing class. Our Women’s Spiritual-ity Class is overflowing and the ladies have met to create their owntalitot to make the Shabbat and holidays even more meaningful tothem.
Sisterhood got artsy in May with a visit to the Make it YourselfCeramics and Glass Studio in Hollywood. Member and Sister-hood Treasurer Joan Lefkowitz and husband Paul arranged a classin glass fusion art for the Sisterhood on May 23. It was a great andintimate evening where we got to know each other better and triedsomething new and different. A couple of attendees remarked af-terwards that it was a thoroughly relaxing evening as we were so fo-cused on learning the process and then cutting the glass andarranging pieces of different colors that all the cares of the worldfell aside. Some of us made colorful sushi style plates and othersmade art to hang or decorate (a hamsa, a sailboat, spiderman). Itwas a great experience and one we want to repeat and encourageothers to join us, again soon. Another class we look forward to inthe New Year is a beading class with ( Judge) Sharon Zeller. Iflearning to make bead bracelets or earrings or trying glass fusion
interests you – let us know at [email protected] far as Women’s Spirituality, some of our members have made
great strides in learning to conduct services and read Torah and ahaftorah, and we are so proud of them. Let’s continue the progresswith classes in torah reading and discussion groups on subjects likePirke Avot (Ethics of the Fathers.) Our book groups have beensuccessful in the past and we are ready to start a new one if thereis interest. Have any good ideas or suggestions? We would love tohear them.
But are we “only for ourselves?” In the past year Sisterhood hasmade significant contributions to our beloved Temple Sinai. Wedonate to ECE for their oneg challah, for the Purim Carnival, andalso to the Religious School. We made a generous contribution toTemple Sinai’s general fund. Camp Sinai was able to distributevarious scholarships through the generosity of Sisterhood’s con-tribution. And we also contribute toward the expense of children’sHigh Holiday services. Last year these contributions totaled over$7,000 and we are happy and proud to be able to help our Templethis way. We look forward to doing even more in the year to come.
We are busy women, but we are committed to studying, to par-ticipating in Temple life, to being creative and to making Sister-hood an active and contributing arm of Temple Sinai. We wouldlove to hear from you with any new input or suggestions. Pleasesend your messages to [email protected]. Have a great summer!
Temple Sinai Sisterhood’s2013 Torah Fund Luncheon
Our 2013 Torah Fund Luncheon. which raises money for the Jewish Theological Seminary, was planned and graciously hostedby our Torah Fund Chair, Anita Rashbaum on May 19th, a beautiful Sunday morning. Our guests outdid themselves with presentations of eye appealing and delicious cuisine, above and beyond the usual great. Have you ever seen a Torah made from
potato salad?. See Randee Eibeschitz' creation for yourself in picture at right. We were serenaded with beautiful music by Marty
Lacks on the keyboard as we dined and visited with ourSisters. What a wonderful and relaxing morning. Sinai Sisterhood has established a new annual award, the etzchayim. Joyce Robbins and Paula Platt were chosen asour first recipients for their exemplary support of Torah Fund, leyning Torah, leading prayerand supporting spiritual growth. There are manyworthy recipients and we look forward to honoringother sisters. RAISING COMMUNITY
AWARENESS
By David A. Schwartz, Staff Writer, Jewish JournalOne teacher was interested in the connection between music and
the Holocaust. Another learned about the Holocaust from Jewishfriends when they were growing up in Miami and wanted to learnmore. And another teacher wanted to expand his knowledge aboutthe Holocaust after taking a March of the Living trip to Poland lastsummer.
The three teachers were part of a group of almost 30 educatorsfrom Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County public schoolsat the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center's AnnualSummer Teacher Institute on Holocaust Education in Hollywood. The five-day, summer program of lectures, films and personal storiestold by Holocaust survivors is in its 21st year.
Rachel Young Jenkins, a music teacher at the Phyllis Ruth MillerElementary School in Miami, said she has wanted to learn moreabout the Holocaust since she visited the United States HolocaustMemorial Museum while attending a music conference in Wash-ington, D.C.
Jenkins said she plans to add some of what she learns at theteacher workshop to her class curriculum.
"There is a Black History Month," Jenkins said. "Will there ever be a month to teach this history?"Richard Reed, a disciplinarian at Hammocks Middle School in Miami and a former high school social studies teacher, said he grew
up in Miami with Jewish friends and heard stories about family members who were killed in the Holocaust. A visit to the U.S. Holo-caust Memorial Museum increased his interest in the Holocaust, he said.
Reed wanted to get "a better historical perspective" and hear the Holocaust survivors speak. "There's not going to be many chances tohear their stories, especially in person," he said.
He also wanted to learn how to eliminate bullying in schools. "Hate grows," Reed said, "because we don't say 'no' right away."Jeffrey Lipp, a math teacher at Western High School in Davie, went on a March of the Living trip to Poland where he visited Auschwitz
and Birkenau. "When I got back, I wanted to continue to learn about [the Holocaust] because there aren't too many survivors left to tellthe story," Lipp said.
Rositta Kenigsberg, president of the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood, told the teachers "The Holo-caust is interdisciplinary. We will show you where, how, what." She urged them to talk to the Holocaust survivors who would tell theirpersonal stories during several sessions.
Rita Hofrichter, coordinator of the Holocaust Center's documentation department and a survivor of the Lodz Ghetto, said she has ahigh regard for teachers of the Holocaust because of the importance of the Holocaust.
"It's not empty words. It is truth," Hofrichter said. "There is a lot of hate and prejudice out there. We take it seriously. I hope that youwill take [what you learn] to your classroom, keep teaching and go a step further."
Florida law requires public schools to teach about the Holocaust. "Complying with the mandate requires instruction and teacher train-ing," Kenigsberg said. "If we want Holocaust education to be taught, we need to train the teachers."
Besides teaching the history of the Holocaust, the workshop included lessons in human rights and how to stop the hate and bullyingthat Kenigsberg said are so prevalent in schools.
"It starts with stereotyping and bullying," said Shanna Nazinitsky, a teacher at the David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center in Miami and thegranddaughter of Holocaust survivors.

HOW HOT WAS IT AT SHARE-A-MEAL IN JUNE???Fathers’ Day was a scorcher as it usually is each June but it never stopped the volunteers from coming in past years. This time I
thought it might and it almost did. We started the morning with JUST 6 WORKERS and we all got a bit worried. But bit by bit acore group arrived and we knew we would be able to finish our work. A huge thanks to Steve and Paula Platt who picked up the sup-plies at Entenmann Thrift and then ran out to get the mustard that I had forgotten to bring. No matter how many times I check mystandard list, there is always one thing I forget to dig out of the garage refrigerator and bring. Thanks Steve! And to all those thatbrought hard boiled eggs, toiletries and clothing to give out---a big shout out of thanks. We always need those supplies and they needto be donated.
The most appreciated Share-a-Meal crew is as follows: My son, Andrew Wiener standing in for Dad Larry, Steve and Paula Platt,Sam and Audrey Meline, Lois and Mark Nonkin, Diane Snyder and daughter Leslie Pines with Shae McGrath, their friend from Iowa,(visitors always welcome!) Barbara and Hy Rosen, Leemor Sapir with Yadeen and Korel, Annie and Jonathan Garber with Shira andNatan, and Cheri and Ron Rothschild with their grandson Myles, and yours truly Judy Wiener. A much smaller group than usual butwe got it done!
When we arrived at the Broward Outreach Center which allows us to serve in their cafeteria to the hungry from the streets, we hada big surprise. There was no ice in their ice maker! We had forgotten that Hollywood had a “boil water” mandate and ofcourse theCenter had no time to have their ice maker recalibrated and stocked. So… off again Steve went to save the day. And boy did we haveice... enough to give the Broward Outreach Center enough to restock their ice maker for dinner. In all, it was a most interesting veryhot day.
We will need to know we have a substantial crew far ahead of time for our slot August 18th. 2013. Temple Sinai’s Open House forprospective members and the Kasselman School Meet and Greet will be that morning and we urge you to encourage your friends tocome and visit and take a tour. They can even see our wonderful program in action!! Shalom,Judy Wiener , Coordinator954-962-0762
