We’ll start things off with a “get together” dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Rosebud Steakhouse, across the street from the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel, our conference site. Educational programs or business meetings are sched- uled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Vice President and Education Committee Chair Leah A. Walker, who has done a stellar job in booking presenters on legal writing plus electronic and print reporting, describes the programs in greater detail elsewhere in this issue of The Catchline. Your input is needed and encouraged at the business sessions, during which we will select the site of the 2014 conference, elect a slate of ARJD officers, and grapple with issues concerning the future of the ARJD and reporters’ offices. Our generous sponsors—Thomson Reuters West LexisNexis, and Wolters Kluwerhave lined up events that highlight the city of Chicago. You’ll enjoy a catered boat tour on the city’s waterways, laugh heartily during a show at the famed Second City Comedy Club (to be preceded by a restaurant dinner), and imagine what the city must have been like during the mobsters’ heyday as you take a “gangster bus tour” (to be followed by a restaurant dinner). Most importantly, you’ll want to renew old friendships and start new ones with persons who share your professional pursuits. See you in Chicago! The Executive Board met on April 6, 2012, in the Natalie Cornell Rehnquist Dining Room at the United States Supreme Court. Among those present were Dan Anselmo (ARJD Presi- dent and Annual Meeting Committee Chair), Leah Walker (Vice President and Education Committee Chair), Chris Fallon, Wilma Grant, Michael Slayton, Leo Phenicie, Harley D’Août, and Frank Wagner. After approving the meeting’s agenda, the minutes of the November 18 Board Meeting, and the Treasurer’s and Com- mittees’ reports, the Board considered who should be respon- sible for updating the ARJD Directory. Although that task was tentatively assigned to the Secretary when the new committee structure was formalized last fall, that responsibility has now been reassigned to the Communications Committee as the bet- ter place for this ongoing duty to be handled. Subsequently, it was decided that the Directory would be updated on or about October 1, 2012. ComsComm asks all ARJD members and others listed in the Directory to forward any changes in their information to [email protected] as soon as possible. The group next discussed how the conference registration materials would be sent to members for the 2012 annual meet- ing in Chicago. Ultimately, it was decided that Dan Anselmo would send the materials via U. S. mail to potential registrants in early May. Thus, you should already have the registration forms in hand when you view this issue of The Catchline. If you don’t, please e-mail [email protected] immediately. Dan informed the group that planning for the Chicago con- ference was proceeding apace. Catering options were discussed extensively. Leah and Dan have been working with the Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel to find the most cost-efficient deals based on the hotel’s prices and the projected attendance for each of the planned meals. The cost of the meals and drinks selected will easily meet our minimum food and beverage re- quirements under the contract with the hotel. Next, Leah discussed hers and Dan’s preference for making the Wednesday night dinner a little less formal than in recent years, returning to our previous custom of going to a restau- rant as a group and everyone paying their own way rather than having a set menu. Everyone agreed and the restaurant Dan proposed, the Rosebud Steakhouse, was accepted as a good venue. The restaurant will permit us to make a reservation for 50, and each patron table will pay its own tab. Leah then discussed the speakers’ AV requirements and the cost of renting the equipment, the siting of the hospitality suite, and the planned tour of the Seventh Circuit building. The group talked extensively about whether to raise the registration fee

Spring Executive Board Meeting

VOLUME XXXI, NO. 2 JUNE 2012

I hope you’ve made plans to attend the ARJD conferenceset for August 1 to 6, 2012, in Chicago. We’ll start thingsoff with a “get together” dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdaynight at the Rosebud Steakhouse, across the street from theMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel, our conference site.

Educational programs or business meetings are sched-uled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday. VicePresident and Education Committee Chair Leah A. Walker, who has done a stellar job in booking presenters on legalwriting plus electronic and print reporting, describes theprograms in greater detail elsewhere in this issue ofThe Catchline.

Your input is needed and encouraged at the businesssessions, during which we will select the site of the 2014conference, elect a slate of ARJD officers, and grapple with

issues concerning the future of the ARJD and reporters’ offices. Our generous sponsors—Thomson Reuters West

Most importantly, you’ll want to renew old friendshipsand start new ones with persons who share your professionalpursuits.

See you in Chicago!

The Executive Board met on April 6, 2012, in the NatalieCornell Rehnquist Dining Room at the United States SupremeCourt. Among those present were Dan Anselmo (ARJD Presi-dent and Annual Meeting Committee Chair), Leah Walker (VicePresident and Education Committee Chair), Chris Fallon,Wilma Grant, Michael Slayton, Leo Phenicie, Harley D’Août,and Frank Wagner.

After approving the meeting’s agenda, the minutes of theNovember 18 Board Meeting, and the Treasurer’s and Com-mittees’ reports, the Board considered who should be respon-sible for updating the ARJD Directory. Although that task wastentatively assigned to the Secretary when the new committeestructure was formalized last fall, that responsibility has nowbeen reassigned to the Communications Committee as the bet-ter place for this ongoing duty to be handled. Subsequently, itwas decided that the Directory would be updated on or aboutOctober 1, 2012. ComsComm asks all ARJD members andothers listed in the Directory to forward any changes in theirinformation to [email protected] as soon as possible.

The group next discussed how the conference registrationmaterials would be sent to members for the 2012 annual meet-ing in Chicago. Ultimately, it was decided that Dan Anselmowould send the materials via U. S. mail to potential registrantsin early May. Thus, you should already have the registrationforms in hand when you view this issue of The Catchline. Ifyou don’t, please e-mail [email protected] immediately.

Dan informed the group that planning for the Chicago con-ference was proceeding apace. Catering options were discussedextensively. Leah and Dan have been working with the

Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel to find the most cost-efficientdeals based on the hotel’s prices and the projected attendancefor each of the planned meals. The cost of the meals and drinksselected will easily meet our minimum food and beverage re-quirements under the contract with the hotel.

Next, Leah discussed hers and Dan’s preference for makingthe Wednesday night dinner a little less formal than in recentyears, returning to our previous custom of going to a restau-rant as a group and everyone paying their own way rather thanhaving a set menu. Everyone agreed and the restaurant Danproposed, the Rosebud Steakhouse, was accepted as a goodvenue. Spring Executive Board Meeting (Cont. from Pg. 1)

in light of a projected deficit the conference will run, and dis-cussed the idea of a family fee, with or without an exemptionfor small children. Ultimately, it was decided that the registra-tion fee would remain $225 for members and vendors and $75for retired members and guests 11 years and older, but wouldbe lowered to $25 for guests 3 to 10 years old, and $0 for those3 or younger.

As for the 2013 annual meeting in Washington, DC, Leahnoted that a contract has been signed with the Phoenix ParkHotel at a nightly rate of $176 for a single room and $198for a double, including a hot breakfast. The dates for theDC meeting are July 31, 2013, to August 5, 2013. Onespeaker, Professor Ross Davies, is potentially on board, andLeah is looking into getting a Supreme Court Justice to speakto the group. There will be a tour of the Court and, possibly,a reception there. Leah asked all to suggest speakers andeducational topics, as well as social activities. Suggestionsfor a Potomac dinner cruise and trips to Mount Vernon andthe Newseum were discussed. Leah will also investigatetours of the White House and the Capitol building. Wilmasuggested speakers from federal agencies that are publishingmaterials online, especially the Government Printing Officeand the Library of Congress.

With respect to future conference sites, Dan noted thatthe recent practice of soliciting member proposals at theannual meeting had resulted in cities suggested that are sim-ply too costly for the ARJD. Thus, Dan and Leah want toreturn to the former practice of having a handful of previ-ously vetted cities proposed at the annual meeting for siteselection. Consequently, Dan contacted Mark Henry, ameeting planner the ARJD has consulted in the past, to con-sider potential 2014 meeting locations in the West and South.Mark contacted hotels in a number of cities, and based onthe results, Leah and Dan will suggest Sacramento, Denver,Albuquerque, Tampa/St. Petersburg, and Nashville for fur-ther consideration at the meeting in Chicago. Vancouver orCalgary (depending on costs) may be added to that list.

Finally, the group discussed whether, in the future, ARJDPresidents’ hotel rooms should be complimentary if theyare paying their own way and whether future ExecutiveBoard meetings should be teleconferenced. The dates forthe next two Board meetings will be November 16, 2012,and April 5, 2013.

Chicago looks set to be a great meeting! Judge RichardPosner will speak to us on legal writing and will also host atour of the Seventh Circuit building on Friday afternoon.William Bernhardt will provide a workshop on legal writ-ing and editing tips. Michele Timmons, the Chair of theUniform Electronic Legal Material Act Committee, willdiscuss the UELMA’s development and ABA approval. For more information and access to the Act’s text, see:http://www.nccusl.orgCommittee.aspx?title=Electronic%20Legal%20Material%20Act

Richard Leiter will describe his “Leading Cases,” project, begun at Harvard Law School and now being carried out bythe University of Nebraska’s Center for Digital Research inthe Humanities. He hopes to “both get feedback and to in-spire the reporters to think about digital publication in a newway. I’m very excited about the opportunity to addressthis special group!” For more information on his project, see: http://thelifeofbooks.blogspot.com/2011/10/new-mode-of-full-text-case-retrieval.html

The roundtable on the developments in states’ onlineexperience, led by Susan Williams from Arkansas, will in-clude Dan Cordova from the Colorado Supreme Court,Brenda Castello, Executive Director of the New MexicoCompilation Commission, and Geraldine Amparo Cepeda, the Guam Compiler of Laws. We are keeping our fingerscrossed that Illinois will also agree to be represented. An-other panel discussion on the details of how Reportersreport their courts’ opinions will be held. John Juroszek,Bill Hooks, and Chantal Demers will talk about the detailsof their jobs: What they actually do to get the product out,how they do it (what review opinions get at what stages, what kinds of corrections/suggestions they make) withexamples of final (or even intermediate) products.

Additionally, a panel discussion led by Dave Power andRalph Preston will focus on the role of Reporters in advis-ing their Justices and courts on changes and developmentsin publishing and technology.

I look forward to seeing you all in Chicago!

Communications CommitteeDuring the short interval since the April 2012 issue of

The Catchline, ComsComm’s own François Boivin, withthe help of Catherine Brideau from his office, has madetwo small but significant changes to facilitate communi-cations among ARJD members and the public.

First, François has set up a Gmail account, [email protected], to allow quick and easy access to the ARJDby those who have questions or wish to make suggestionsor comments. The new address is displayed prominentlyon the ARJD Web site’s home page. Thus far, we haveused the account as a fail safe to allow members and oth-ers who have not received (or have misplaced) their Chi-

cago registration materials to readily obtain replacements.Second, François has created a link between the Web

site and the ARJD Facebook group page to enhance useof the page by the ARJD membership. As of this writing,17 members have joined the Facebook group. Recentposts have included a lively discussion of citations toWikipedia in court opinions, and a collection of colorfulflyers for the vendor-sponsored events in Chicago. Whynot get in on the fun and see what it’s all about? Theinstructions for joining our Facebook group are readilyavailable in an article printed in the November 2011issue of The Catchline.

CHICAGO

Hog Butcher for the World,

Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,

Player with Railroads and the Nation’s Freight Handler;

Stormy, husky, brawling,

City of the Big Shoulders:

They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys.

And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again.

And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the faces of women and children I have seen the marks of wanton hunger.

And having answered so I turn once more to those who sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer and say to them:

Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.

Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on job, here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities;

Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning as a savage pitted against the wilderness,

Bareheaded,

Shoveling,

Wrecking,

Planning,

Building, breaking, rebuilding,

Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with white teeth,

Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young man laughs,

Laughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs who has never lost a battle,

Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse, and under his ribs the heart of the people,

Laughing!

Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of Youth, half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog Butcher, Tool Maker,Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.
