So there I was, sitting and waiting for the feature indie film “Nowhere Boy,” a story about the early life of John Lennon before The Beatles. The evening was truly magical sitting under the stars at the Celestial Cinema watch-ing the short films on a ginormous screen and sound so clear and perfect you would have thought you were in an enclosed, state-of-the-art theatre. There’s an intermission between the shorts and the feature film and someone sits in the seat next to mine and I look over to say “Aloha,” and the young man answers with a “Hi. How are you?” Nothing too unusual about this except that it was Zac Efron. Yes, that Zac Efron. We chatted a while and I told him that I had actually seen a couple of his movies and thought they were quite good. Nice young man. No bodyguards, no entourage, no dark glasses at night. No attitude. Very refreshing for a young man who has achieved so much so soon. Wailea will once again host the 12th Annual Maui Film Festival, June 15-19. The Shops at Wailea has always been a proud sponsor of the festival and we are pleased to again be a major sponsor for this year’s celebration. If you have never before partaken in what has become Wailea’s signature event you are missing quite an experience. From a fabulous bevy of spectacular cinema to The Taste of Wailea, The Taste of Chocolate, as well as a number of very happening parties such as the Starry Night Moon Dance at Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Café, the Maui Film Festival truly is no ka oi.
