A/C CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL COMPETES IN THE 16TH ANNUAL ILLINOIS ENVIROTHON

Five members from A/C Central High School traveled to Monticello, Illinois and competed with 15 other teams from across Illinois at the 16th Illinois Envirothon Competition. This two-day environmental competition for high school students determined which team advances to represent Illinois and com-pete at the Canon Envirothon for college scholarships and Canon prizes August 1-7, 2010 in Fresno, California. The Canon Envirothon is North America’s largest high school environmental education competition featuring teams from across the United States and Canada competing for prizes and college scholarships. Taylorville High School placed first, Cissna Park High School finished second and third place was Triad High School. Team members from the A/C Central High School included: Teagan Smith, Morgan Wessel, Brandon Smith, Kelsey Handy and Sarah Pherigo along with their advisor, Jennifer Waters The Envirothon program combines classroom learning with hands-on field experiences focused around five major topics - Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife and a Current Environmental Issue. This year the current issue was “Protection of Groundwater through Urban, Agricultural and Environmental Planning”. The first day the five member teams rotated through five outdoor testing stations, where their knowl-

edge is evaluated and scored through written examination. Additionally, the competition includes an oral presentation component that challenges students to effectively apply and communicate a solution to a complex environmental issue. Stacy Stremsterfer, Illinois Envirothon Coordinator stated, “The Envirothon experience enhances a student’s critical thinking and problem solving skills and gives the students exposure to careers in environmental science and natural resource management they might not see in the classroom setting.” She went on to add, “This program is also expanding student’s knowledge about the world that surrounds us. These students will become tomorrow’s leaders, workers and consumers who are better equipped to make informed decisions.” Schools who participated at the 16th Illinois Envirothon include: Dixon High School, Midland High School, Cissna Park High School, West Prairie High School, El -Paso-Gridley High School, Monticello High School, Shiloh High School, AC Central High School, Taylorville High School, Edwards County High School, Triad High School, Clay City High School, Grayville High School, Murphysboro High School and Woodstock High School. You can learn more about the Illinois Envirothon by visiting the Association’s website at www.aiswcd.org, click on the education tab, then Envirothon. The Illinois Envirothon is sponsored by the Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts (AISWCD). Sponsors include: Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Canon Envi-rothon, Illinois Farm Bureau, Pheasants Forever, several local soil and water conservation districts, Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts Employee Association, the AISWCD and their Auxiliary.

Team members from the A/C Central High School included: Teagan Smith, Morgan Wessel, Brandon Smith, Kelsey Handy and Sarah Pherigo along with their advisor, Jennifer Waters
