1975 EASTERN ALAC SPECIALTY CRITIQUE

I have been asked for my comments on the Eastern ALAC Lhasa ApsoSpecialty held at Trenton on May 4, 1975. All I can say to the many mem-bers of the ALAC all over the world is that this day, that I had looked for-ward to and dreamed of for so many years, turned into the "Mud Bath ofthe Decade." The best "mudders" won and all who attended, both canineand human, must be commended for showing and exhibiting under mostdifficult conditions. Everyone was pleasant and helped make my judging jobmuch easier. My Best of Breed, Ch. DaktazI Tsung owned by Maria Aspuru and

Leonard Ripley showed to perfection and looked beautiful in spite of such aterrible day. He moved perfectly and it was a hard decision to make with somany fine specimens of the breed competing for this prize. Winners Dog,Chok's Joker owned by Susan Gehr & Garnet Gehr, Jr. was a typeyshowman who asked for it. Winners Bitch and Best of Winners was Shyr-LyzFabalous Flirt owned by Shirley Scott, a young truly magnificent bitch whocaptivated all those who watched her move through the rain. My Best ofOpposite Sex, Ch. Chick-Chick's Shen-Lee owned by ldelle and DarrylGoldberg was very sound and gave a good show and moved out well in theweather.

I thank the entire membership for bestowing the great honor of judgingyour National Specialty upon me. I pray someday to be given this oppor-tunity again at an indoor site where our gorgeous Lhasas can be exhibitedto their full advantage. Congratulations to all participants of the EasternALAC 1975 Specialty.

OBEDIENCE LESSON #1By Virginia Murphy

"Anion" R.D. #2, Phoenixville, Pa. 19460

HeelingHave your dog sit at your left side, close to your leg. Hold your lead

(drawing #1) folded up in your left hand. In heel-ing work, both arms hang naturally by your side.Relax! Keeping your lead slack; start movingforward with your left foot at the same timesaying your dog's name followed by, "Heel."Give a crisp jerk forward and parallel to theground. Coax, persuade, praise, and keep movingforward. Walk briskly, in short strides (large stridesare for large dogs!), using short jerks when neces-sary, in the direction you are moving, and praise.Keep your dog gay and enthusiastic! Jerk forward, not up. This is a small dog, and a jerk up will bringhim off the ground instead of forward in the lineof movement. To catch and hold your dog's attention, you will

do right-about turns in addition to the regular rightand left turns while moving smoothly forward.Keep the lead loose enough to be able to jerk itafter making the turn in the opposite direction. Inall turns, time your jerk so that he feels it was hisfailure to make the turn which caused the jerk!An about-turn is made by pivoting smartly to

your right (left-about turns are no longer required in actual Obedience com-petition), stepping out with your left foot in the opposite direction andsnapping your lead parallel to the ground after you have turned. I used topractice these turns without my dog!

Pat your leg to coax your dog, and to encourage him to come in close toit. Remember not to step into him, he must know that his place is by yourside, and must not be betrayed by your suddenly landing on him!

If your dog lunges ahead, use repeititous quick jerks backward towardyour leg, saying, "Heel." Do not let him lag behind you, do not ever draghim, but coax him to your leg, using short jerks if you must. Be always mo-ing forward!Do not allow him to sniff the ground at any time! In an Obedience trial,

you would be marked down, as sniffing suggests that you have lost yourdog's attention, and if you have, you may find yourself walking alone! Praiseafter each correction. When appropriate, do not be afraid to show youraffectionate approval or to encourage him with a happy pat! Watch his tailcarriage which is an indicator of his feelings.

8

When you halt, your dog must sit squarely, and close to your heel. Ifhe is too far from you, coax him in, patting your leg. If he does not stopwith you, jerk the lead back, parallel to the ground toward your leg, and tellhim to "Sit." In the beginning, you will say, "Sit," at each halt. Praise himwhen he does it! Vary your work pattern to prevent boring him. Be alert towhere he is all of the time, and in this way you will avoid his making amistake. It is always best to prevent a problem right from the start!

Sit

(Drawing #2) Just before you halt, transferthe lead to your right hand, keeping it taut. Jerkit up and backward, say, "Sit," and at the sametime press down on the dog's rear with your lefthand. When he sits, immediately loosen the leadand praise him. If he sits at an angle, correct himby cuffing the outside hip as he sits. Return thelead to your left hand as you now moveforward, saying "Heel." Repeat the halt, beingalert for possible crookedness, and being quickto praise when he sits. Do not do too manyhalts in a row, as this can discourage him fromhappy heeling, and can later be responsible forhis lagging behind you.

4i-

Sit-Stay

In this exercise, you will be holding thelead in both hands for easy handling of itslength, and to correct your dog if he starts tomove out of the Stay position. Place the sewnloop end of the leash around your right palm. With your left hand, take a hold of the lead alittle more than halfway down its length andpass it to your right hand. Now place yourleft hand (hanging by your side) on theleash. The left hand will be used to correctyour dog by holding him in place if he moves,to let out the slack when you leave him, andto take it up as you circle him to return toheel position. Your right hand will hold thelead close at waist level. (Drawing #3)

9

With your dog sitting at heel give him thesignal and command to "Stay." The signal isgiven by holding your left hand (Drawing #4)palm turned toward and close to his nose sothat the fingers point toward the ground, andsaying, "Stay." Keep your lead slack, beingquick to correct him if he moves. Keeping yourmovements slow, step a short distance awayfrom him with your right foot and face him.Pivot back on your left foot to heel position, repeating, "Stay," only if he moves. As youboth progress, you will be able to back furtherand further down the lead until finally you areat the end of it.

Once able to stay at the length of the lead, you willstart going back to heel position in the requiredmanner. At the full length of the lead circle slowly(Drawing #5) to your dog's left (your right), walkingbehind him and into heel position. As you walkaround him watch for him to move to get up. Hemay either want to follow you, or may think youare leaving him. If he moves, say, "Stay" as youcontinue around, keeping him there with your lead(Drawing #6) which is in the left hand. When back atheel position praise him, not too enthusiastically, lesthe get up.

From Frances Sefton

Breed standards generally are sadly lacking in descriptive detail. Moststandards can be only a guide for individual interpretation and preferences.A breed standard cannot be regarded as a blue print even though we like tothink of it that way.

The opportunity that is presently arising to put forward recommendedrevisions to the AKC standard for the Lhasa Apso is a priceless one, allowingus to improve and clarify a standard which does have its omissions. Remem-ber, though, that the standard is not only the present basis for judging; it isalso the guide lines on which future generations will be bred, judged andexhibited.

Each breed has its hallmarks, unique characteristics that distinguish itfrom other breeds and from "basic dog." These characteristics should bestated clearly, without ambiguity, in the breed standard. It is important tounderstand and to distinguish between personal preferences — which are theindividual variations within the standard — and the mandatory "hallmarks"which every Lhasa Apso should possess to be a typical specimen of thebreed.

It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that the definitions of the hall-marks of the breed are never lost from the standard, and are phrased so thatthey can be readily understood.

The differences of standards in various countries is of little importance —the differences should be only in "preferences"; wherever in the world, thehallmarks of the breed must be the same.

There are four basic hallmarks of the Lhasa Apso.

1 — Size. Size is a hallmark in many breeds, and applies wherever thebreed's size differs from "basic dog."

2 — Coat. The Lhasa Apso has a specific type of coat, distinct from otherbreeds. Colour is not a hallmark of the breed — though there may be"preferences" and a wide range of permissible colours is listed.

3 — Temperament or Character. The Lhasa Apso has a quite distinctivebreed temperament that is an essential part of the dog.

4 — Head. A Lhasa Apso with the correct head can never be mistaken forany other breed whatever its coulour, patterning or length of hair. Ifbecause it is a particoulour it looks "Shih Tzu," the head is notcorrect. If it passes for a large Maltese because of colour„ the head isnot correct. If with the hair clipped or wet it looks like a "mutt," thehead is not correct.

Analyzing these hallmarks, we will find that they still permit room for"preferences." For example — height. The breed characteristic is that the

12

dog is a small dog — not large like a Great Dane, or medium like a Boxer, oreven in three different heights like the Poodle. The current AKC standardsays about 10 or 11 inches. The revised 1973 English standard says "ideally10 inches, bitches slightly smaller." This fraction of difference is unimpor-tant — it provides the personal preference allowable — the ContinentalEuropeans like 9 inch dogs, the English like 10 inches, the U.S. average 101/2inches. Read height in conjunction with the rest of the standard, where thebody is described in detail along with fore and hind-quarters, and it is clearthat a strong, well-muscled, well-knit dog between 9 and 11 inches is theaim. A flimsy toyish dog of 81/2" is not a typical Lhasa Apso, no more is acoarse-boned, heavy-weight of 12 inches.

No weight recommendations are given. However, with the good muscula-tion and necessary good but not coarse bone, the range for the 9" to 11"Lhasa would be between 12 lbs. to 18 lbs.

Coat — The Lhasa Apso has a particular type of coat. Length of coat maybe exaggerated to give the dog more sophistication and elegance for theshow-ring; that is personal preference. The standard merely says "Of goodlength." The breed characteristic is that the coat should be all-embracing —plenty of it on head, feet, legs, tail and body — dense; heavy and straight andof hard texture not silky or wooly.

The revised English standard defines it a little further, and makes clearwhat the word "dense" had previously implied — that the coat is a doublecoat. I quote: "top coat heavy, straight and hard, not woolly or silky, ofgood length. Dense under-coat." This removes an ambiguity existing in thestandard.

Temperament — very much a hallmark of the breed, and is currently listedquite clearly in the standard under Character, and in the English standardunder "characteristics." The phrases are easily understood, surely? TheEnglish standard does add alongside the definition of temperamentsomething about gait — "Free and jaunty movement". This movement isquite distinctive when seen, but being listed next to the description of tem-perament it does usefully aid in the word picture of the personality of thedog.

Head — characteristics of the head create the major distinctions betweenbreeds, providing the unique expression; and the Lhasa is no exception.Unfortunately the standard's description of the head properties leaves muchto be desired in this respect.

In evolution as a breed, the Lhasa Apso is one of the group of smallAsian dogs possessed of a form of the brachycephalic skull and foreface.Unlike the bigger working Asian breeds, the Lhasa developed many of itsphysical characteristics as a result of selection by man for appearance sake.Even though the Tibetans were not dog breeders in the true sense of the

13

word, nevertheless in their small breeds their choice followed the lines oforiental taste for the shorter head.

The Lhasa Apso does not have a pure brachycephalic skull, like the Pug orthe Pekingese, or even the Shih Tzu. It is a modification, a partial adapta-tion. Here are the clues — and I quote from the standard — "straight foref ace. .. length from tip of nose to eye to be roughly about one third of the totallength from nose to back of skull ... mouth level, otherwise slightlyundershot preferable ... " All these are slight variations from the "norm."

Great pains were taken in the early drawing up of the original standardto distinguish the breed from the Shih Tzu (which is why the skull andmuzzle are described in some detail). Nevertheless, the listed characteristicsreveal the presence of the brachycephalic skull in the Lhasa ancestry —and the breed's history supports this.

Not written into the standard but nevertheless part and parcel of thetypical Lhasa head are the strong underjaw, the "lip," the blunted muzzlewith the acute nose tip, the medium stop and the frontally placed eyes.

To fill your eye with a typical Lhasa Apso head look at the well-knownphotograph of Am. Ch. Licos Kulu La by Ludwig, where the hair fall iscombed back from one eye (reproduced in The Lhasa Apso handbook whichI wrote, on page 20) and the pictures of Eng. Ch. Brackenbury Gunga Dinof Verles on the front cover and page 4 of Pet Library's "Know Your LhasaApso."

In the revision of the English standard, a great deal of trouble was takento amplify and describe fully the parts of the head properties which it wasfelt had led to misunderstanding over the years. The following is the descrip-tion that finally was incorporated into the official standard:

"Skull moderately narrow, falling away behind the eyes in a marked degree;not quite flat, but not domed or appleshaped. Straight foreface with mediumstop. Nose black; Muzzle about 11/2 inches long, but not square; the lengthfrom tip of nose to be roughly one-third the total length from nose to backof skull. Eyes — Dark medium-sized eyes, to be frontally placed, not large orfull, or small and sunk. No white showing at base or top of eye ... Mouth —Upper incisors should close just inside the lower, i.e. a reverse scissor bite.Incisors should be nearly in a straight line. Full dentition is desirable."

Major amendment to the mouth and bite sets out the bite in precise detailand puts an end to any ambiguity concerned with the use of the word"level."

Controversy has raged for years over this word, and it has probably beenmore responsible than any other for the tremendous, confusing variation inhead types. Breed standards vary in the use to which they put "level" in thedescriptions pertaining to the Mouth, but the context in which it was used inthe earlier Lhasa Apso standards makes it apparent that it refers to BITE.

14

The evidence of the older, earlier breeders and exhibitors, who wereinvolved in the original forming of the standard back in the 20's and 30'swas that "level" meant a pincer bite, the incisors meeting edge to edge. Newpeople coming into the breed over the years, especially when coming fromworking or sporting breeds, assumed it meant "scissor" (the canine normal)bite.

Fact is, edge to edge or very slightly undershot bites give and maintainthe true head type, with correct muzzle and eye placement, and thatsomewhat steady snooty look that is so typical of the Lhasa.

With the introduction of the scissor bites on one hand and the excessivelyundershot on the other, the heads began to vary, teeth development becamea problem, and confusion set in.

In considering their recommendations to the English Kennel Club, theU.K. breed club took note of the opinion of a great number of dog breederswho dislike the edge to edge bite from the aspect of ultimate wear on theincisors — the important consideration in a long-lived breed like the Lhasa. Many of these breeders had for years bred for the "slightly undershot" biteallowed in the earlier standards.

The opinion regarding wear on the incisors was upheld by several veterin-arians, and by the English Kennel Club itself. I myself have a letter from thelate Mr. Charles Binney, then secretary of the Kennel Club, on the subject, putting the official point of view against the pincer (edge to edge) bite.

It was therefore decided to opt for the slightly undershot bite anddescribe it in precise detail so that there could be no ambiguity in thestandard. The "reverse scissor" (which is a sound, undershot bite) becamemandatory. (Undershot is used in the dog breeder sense, not the veterinarysense.)

Such a detailed description of the bite is a great improvement and an aidto achieving uniformity in head type. Initially because of previous deviationsinto scissor bites and excessively undershot bites one could not expectperfection, but what is important in practice is that the reverse scissorachieves the true head type and expression overall.

Breeders and judges need to look first overall at the head. Many things goto make up the correct head and expression and all things appertaining to itshould be considered when trying to assess and describe correct breed type, but in practice the correct bite has tremendous bearing, because it bringswith it so many of the other features in their ideal balance.

It can be seen how important it is that the phrasing in a breed standardshould be easily understood, and not lead to ambiguity. There should be nopersonal interpretation of the hallmarks or breed characteristics possible ifthe standard is correctly and clearly phrased. In doing a revision, great caremust be taken not to "change" the standard thus "change" true breed type.

COMMENTS ON WESTMINSTER '75

The judging of Lhasa Apsos at the Westminster Kennel Club Show was amost pleasant assignment for me. The breed is one in which I have had akeen interest for several years, as Maxine Beam, who showed Pomeraniansfor me, was one of the first handlers to present the Lhasa Apso in theSouthwest area. It was through Maxine that I first became interested inthe breed and had an opportunity to observe the breed and discuss it withbreeders, at shows and in their kennels. It was this exposure and frequentjudging of the breed since that time that has helped me understand andappreciate the Lhasa Apso breed. The Garden entry was gratifying in its quality. I found the entry to be

basically sound, almost totally correct in bite, and many to be of better coattexture than is often seen. Some entries were not as pleasing in head and ex-pression as one would desire. The entry was generally well presented andwell groomed — a must in this elegant breed. My selection of Best of Breed,Best of Opposite to Best of Breed, Winners Dog and Winners Bitch wascertainly exciting to me. In my opinion, they reflect those qualities whichare most desirable in the breed.May I express my appreciation to the Lhasa Fancy for the nice entry

which you brought to me on the occasion, and a special thanks for yourmany regards concerning my judging on that day.
