Welcome to worship at Riverside! There are times in life when we find ourselves adrift. The world seems indifferent to our existence or even hostile to us. Finding the strength to carry on under such circumstances can be hard. Elijah experienced a career high as God’s prophet when he presided over the defeat of the prophets of Baal. But his success brought him greater scrutiny from his foes. Elijah fled for his life; and when he had run as far as he could, he crawled into a cave hoping to go to sleep and never wake up. Elijah’s mistake was thinking he was in it alone. He lost sight of the fact that he was working for God. God came to Elijah. Not to rebuke Elijah for his lack of faith but to give him new marching orders. God tells Elijah to get up and go. Today we celebrate fathers. Those men in our lives—fathers, husbands, brothers and sons—who are getting the job done. The men who have maybe suffered indifference or hostility. The ones who have maybe been beat down by the sacrifices they’ve made for their families. But with an occasional holy kick, have gotten back up and kept going. With gratitude for all that our own fathers and our heavenly Father do for us, Pastor Melanie
