This weekend we welcome to the parish Fr Trung SJ and Helen Ford. Trung is already known to many in our parish. He is currently the Director of Jesuit Mission. Helen is the CEO of Jesuit Mission. Over the years our parish has been generous in supporting the work of Australian Jesuits in missions overseas. For many years your support went to Aussies working in north India. That area is now well served by local Jesuits, through there are still some Australians there and we continue to support them financially. However, Jesuit Mission now supports many other works of Jesuits in Pakistan, Cambodia, East Timor, Myanmar and other areas in the region. In the Church’s calendar on this weekend we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christ, the feast of the Body of Christ. The traditional Corpus Christi procession will take place on Sunday in the CBD. The Jesuit Mission Appeal is a reminder to all on this feast of the social dimensions of the Eucharist. Our Lord doesn’t just come to me in Holy Communion to show his love for me. He also comes to me with the challenge to recognise him present wherever he may be and especially in the poor, the hungry, the marginalised, the stranger and refugee, the sick and needy. There is something seriously wrong with recognising the Lord present in the Eucharist and at the same time fail to recognise him in those in need. Many years ago Father Pedro Arrupe SJ, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus declared: If there is hunger anywhere in the world, then our celebration of the Eucharist is somehow incomplete everywhere in the world… In the Eucharist we receive Christ hungering in the world. He comes to us, not alone, but with the poor, the oppressed, the starving of the earth. Through him they are looking to us for help, for justice, for love expressed in action. Therefore we cannot properly receive the Bread of life unless at the same time we give the bread of life to those in need wherever and whoever they may be. (Address at the Eucharistic Congress, Philadelphia, 1976). Your generosity to Jesuit Mission will go directly to support the work of Jesuits among people who are not as blessed materially as we are. In particular, through education it will give hope for the future to many children. This week, June 18—24 is REFUGEE WEEK. The news this week was that the Australian Government has agreed to pay $70 million in compensation to nearly 2000 refugees. Despite the bluster from Government ministers and others, this is an acknowledgement of the serious mistreatment of refugees in the Manus Island Detention Centre. The UN and Human Rights groups have long condemned our treatment of these vulnerable people. There are still over 900 asylum seekers in detention even after 4 years for no other crime than that of seeking refuge. In addition there are right now 7,500 people seeking asylum in Australia who have been waiting up to 3 years to apply for refugee status. The government is now rushing through a process designed to make most fail by 1 October, 2017. Australia used to be a generous country for refugees. I, myself, am a boat person.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

This weekend 17—18 June is our Parish Appeal for Jesuit Mission.

“Before I was nothing … ” About 50,000 people live in refugee camps in the Southern African region. Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Southern Africa helps meet their immediate needs through counselling & healthcare services, and also offers the hope of a brighter future by providing education programs, vocational training and micro-grant schemes. When forcibly displaced people have a livelihood, their financial, food and housing security will improve.

With support from our Australian community, Jesuit Mission supports JRS education and vocational training programs in Tongogara Camp in Zimbabwe. Several hundred adults benefit each year from business start-up support, and training in computing, hairdressing, cosmetology and sewing.

Bvunzai Mutema says, “I was trained in sewing skills in 2014. The training brought [a] new face to my family life. When I completed my second level training, my sewing skills were even improved. Today we are being recognised in our community. We are sewing mostly work suits and uniforms. Thank you JRS for giving me this opportunity to be trained in sewing skills. Before I was nothing but now I’m a garment designer and maker and able to buy my household needs. My income generating has greatly improved as well as my household financial status. I hope these skills will take us a long way to address our current economic crisis. I also want to appeal to JRS to train more ladies of the Mutema community so that more women are empowered. Thank you once again. May God bless you.”

The generosity of the Jesuit Mission Australia community helps makes it possible for vulnerable people like Bvunzai to live in freedom, security and dignity.
