PARISH WEEKDAY MASSES & RECONCILIATION

*HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: 9am Mondays & Fridays, *ST IGNATIUS Toowong: 5.30pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.

SUNDAY MASS TIMES:- *ST IGNATIUS Toowong Saturday 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm. Reconciliation: Saturday from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. *HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Sunday 8.30am.

The disciples were full of questions about God.

Said the Master, “God is Unknown, the Unknowable. Every statement

about God, every answer to your questions is a distortion of the Truth.”

The disciples were bewildered. “Then why do you speak about God at

all?”

Said the Master, “Why does the bird sing?”

(Father Anthony de Mello SJ, The Song of the Bird) De Mello adds, not

because the bird “has a statement, but because it has a song.”

On this feast of the Blessed Trinity we confess (sing) our faith that our God is “Three Persons in the One

God”. This is a mystery of our faith that is beyond our understanding. Our God is “Utterly Other”, so much

beyond our comprehension. We believe ultimately because of our faith in Jesus.

In the early centuries of the Christian church especially Christians struggled, not to understand the

mystery of the Trinity, but to define what it is that we believe about the Godhead. So the Church defines

its beliefs in “creeds”.

But long before the creeds were developed the Church sang its praises of our God, Father, Son and Holy

Spirit. Today we join the universal Church in singing our praises to God.

A special rite of passage for our children is receiving Holy Communion for the first time. Very rightly we

celebrate this occasion this weekend. Please pray for the children who will make their first Holy

Communion that they may grow to understand how previous they are to God.

The Parish Pastoral Council has prepared a ‘Vision, Strengths and Weaknesses’ paper which attempts to

give a summary of the state of the parish and its hopes for the future. This summary will be presented to

the Archbishop. We hope that this will help to guide him and his consultors in making the decision about

the future of the parish following the departure of the Jesuits at the end of the year. It is intended that his

paper be distributed to parishioners before the end of Masses this weekend. We would appreciate your

comments. You can place a tick or a cross beside any sentence you approve or disapprove of. You may

like to add a comment either in writing or by email to the parish. There is no need to add your name if

you prefer to remain anonymous. Marked baskets will be available at the back of our churches to place

your comments.

ST FABER’S GREEN DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Greengate’s latest Newsletter #5 May 2017 has been posted to those who have previously registered with Greengate. NB. Limited hard copies are available at both churches.

Extract from the aforementioned newsletter—

“St Faber’s Green Care Village: defining the vision. The Holy Spirit Church led by the late Father Peter Quin initiated the vision for the new village. Fr Peter sadly passed away last year but his vision for the under-utilised Church asset to serve the local community is now becoming closer to realisation.

Fr Peter believed local seniors needed to have quality care and accommodation options as they aged. Changing health care and community needs could not be easily met in Auchenflower where they had lived most of their lives.

Fr Peter named the Village “St Faber’s Green” and it is a legacy to his vision and his faithful service. We will be in touch again shortly to ask how Fr Peter’s name could be best incorporated into the village.”

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

Daw Yin New lives in Thingangyun slum in Yangon, Myanmar. Over 200,000 people live here, crowded into small, run-down thatched huts lining insanitary, muddy lanes. Footpaths and waterways are strewn with waste, and the area is vulnerable to flooding.

Many families here face discrimination due to their tribal or ethnic background. Without ID papers many can’t secure jobs, or send their children to school.

Myanmar’s Jesuit Mission is the only major organisation supporting the most marginalised families in this slum area. With support from our Australian community, the Jesuits support the poorest families with new shelters and microloans for starting small businesses.

Daw Yin New has a new wooden house, with an iron roof: the rain no longer comes in. Though Daw Yin New can’t afford to send her children to school, doing so is her deepest desire. Education, she believes, is the way out of poverty. She is learning about the microloan program, hoping to purchase a boat and net. With these, she hopes to increase her income by retrieving more objects from the waterways to clean and sell.

The Jesuits have also established an evening study centre in the slum providing a safe and well-lit place for students to study and complete homework, and they also run an English language program, building skills and infusing confidence in Thingangyun’s youth.

With the accompaniment of the Jesuits in Myanmar, Daw Yin New believes that her children will have a better future. Please support Jesuit Mission’s Parish Appeal on the 17-18 June, and help families, in Myanmar and over 10 other countries, to live full and free lives. Read more about our work at www.jesuitmission.org.au.

St Ignatius Parish

An Ignatian Catholic Faith Community carrying out the Mission of Christ

This paper will help introduce our parish to the archdiocese. Your thoughts and feedback are

important. You might like to tick statements you agree with, or mark where you feel

something needs to be reconsidered. Perhaps you would also like to write more on an attached

piece of paper or in email form.

Vision

We hold a vision of our parish as an inclusive, welcoming community that preserves the teachings

of St Ignatius and encourages each of us to grow in Christ.

This means we seek:

A priest who communicates well, enables and encourages parishioners to grow, and who

respects the tradition of the parish community.

To engage with other churches and the wider local community, but maintain our identity and

parish communities.

To empower our members and encourage them to share their gifts and stories.

To facilitate the transition from child to adult by offering real worshipping experiences. We

have a particular emphasis on engaging youth through a family-friendly liturgical outreach.

To welcome the stranger and those who have severed their relationship with the community,

church and Christ.

To preserve Ignatian teachings of a relationship with Jesus on a personal level, by

maintaining our partnership with the Faber Centre of Ignatian Spirituality and encouraging

the prayer life of individuals.

To be compassionate, reach out to the marginalized, work for reconciliation and for

responsible stewardship of the earth, and to walk with the poor.

Strengths

We are rich with respect to people, infrastructure and Ignatian spirituality. We are strengthened by

the motivation and industry of our fellow parishioners expressed through many volunteer groups.

We enjoy the distinct characters of two churches with diverse Masses presenting a constellation of

faith.

We are grateful for:

Our links to the Faber Centre of Ignatian Spirituality along with the spiritual identity and

theology of the Ignatian tradition. We see this as representing 'treasure beyond measure'.

The legacy of 101 years of Jesuit priests who have left us prepared for the future, with a

strong lay ministry.

The individuality of each Mass, underpinned and connected by the strengths of the parish:

music ministry, children's participation, broader participation and the offering of friendship

and hospitality.

The Auchenflower community with its younger demographic, willing and able to move

forward; and the Toowong community, steeped in a rich history of parish storytelling.

The dedicated family Mass and children's liturgy at Auchenflower.

The way we enrich, and are enriched by, members from outside our geographical boundaries.

A superb director of music accompanied by a team of young musicians and volunteer

choristers. The singing is what attracts many people from outside the parish.

St Ignatius Primary School, which plays a vital role in connecting children and their parents

to the Church. Our outreach extends beyond two church communities, the Faber Centre of

Ignatian Spirituality and St Ignatius Primary School to embrace Stuartholme School, local

state schools and the Wesley Hospital.

Strong social justice outreach including support for refugees and Indigenous people as well

as support for parishioners in need.

Challenges

We grieve the loss of the Jesuits and must work to move forward. We have an embarrassment of

riches with respect to people and infrastructure and both these endowments need to be treasured,

maintained and developed.

The work ahead includes:

The transition as St Faber’s Green is built at Auchenflower. How can we help to fulfil the

needs of the elderly and manage and sustain a triangular relationship with Greengate?

The roofs and general maintenance of the churches.

An upgrade of our computer and banking systems so they are compatible with Archdiocesan

requirements.

Being better prepared and organized without becoming bureaucratic and suffocating

individual and group initiatives.

Coping with the demands and needs of a fluctuating population and more multicultural

demography.

Creating cohesion and a sense of community between autonomous groups and the four Mass

communities. Providing regular information channels and the opportunity to meet.

Building structures and a path that draws young, enthusiastic people to our community.

Reaching out to parishioners and others within our geographical area who have been hurt by

the church or its agencies.

Finding ways to share the benefits of Jesuit vision with a new priest and new parishioners.

Countering the loss of the Jesuits; reassuring those who were attracted by the Jesuit charism

and those who may resist their departure. We will have to accept that we lose some of our

communal independence in the transition from the Jesuits to the Archdiocese.

Adjusting to a different environment and establishing wider networks with the local

community and other Christian communities particularly in the area of youth ministry.

The prospect of fewer clergy, forcing changes to sacramental services but also greater

opportunities for involvement and responsibility on the part of the laity.
