    Dear Friends,

At the end of the week, Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28, the Church celebrates The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (27th) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary (28th). Both feasts call to mind what we associate with the “heart” – love, sacrifice and devotion. We recall these attributes with the Divine Heart of Jesus, where “from the earliest days of the Church, Christ’s open side and the mystery of blood and water were meditated upon, and the Church was beheld issuing from the side of Jesus, as Eve came forth from the side of Adam. It is in the eleventh and twelfth centuries that we find the first unmistakable indications of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Through the wound in the side, the wound in the Heart was gradually reached, and the wound in the Heart symbolized the wound of love.” (Catholic Encyclopedia)

It is most appropriate for us to honor the Lord through 40 Hours Devotion since St. Margaret Mary Alacogue (1647-1690) had a personal revelation involving these visions of Christ while praying before the Blessed Sacrament. She wrote “He disclosed to me the marvels of His Love and the inexplicable secrets of His Sacred Heart.”

Our parish patronal feast is the Immaculate Heart of Mary. One writer says “The main difference between the devotions to the hearts of Jesus and Mary is that the one concerned with Jesus emphasizes His divine heart as being full of love for all humanity, while devotion to Mary’s heart is concerned with the love her heart has for Jesus, for God.”

Certainly, this latter love of Mary, as is described, is what we see so often in art, where statues and paintings of Mary will depict her pointing to the child Jesus, directing us to her Son.

On the feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, you are invited to wear red on Friday and blue on the weekend for our parish patronal feast. We are permitted to move the feast to a Sunday celebration, so our readings and music will be for the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our bulletin next week will serve as a worship aid to help us all enter into the celebration of our feast day. Additionally, coffee, cookies and donuts will be served after Mass to help as we celebrate. Thanks to all who are involved in the providing and serving. We are blessed!

    God Bless,

    Fr. Tom

  • 4 Immaculate Heart of mary ParIsH We are a welcoming Catholic community centered in the Eucharist,

Christmas in JulyDoes it look like Christmas? IHM is having its annual Christmas in July Collection. The trees are up and filled with color coded tags to help the following organizations:

1 Catholic Charities; assists with refugee resettlement—WHITE tags

2 Connections: A Safe Place; assists victims of child sexual abuse—GREEN tags

3 Bethany House; serves homeless families—YELLOW tags

4 Inter Parish Ministry; helps low income families—ORANGE tags

5 Interfaith Hospitality Network; provides clothing and toiletries for homeless—PURPLE tags

6 HELP; serves individuals returning to society after incarceration—BLUE tags

This is the time of year when most social service agencies are very low on supplies to take care of the needs of their clients. PLEASE consider helping by taking a tag or two, purchasing the items needed and returning them (unwrapped with tag attached) on July 13 & 14, 2019. If these “turn in” dates are inconvenient, give your donations to the parish office earlier. Thanks for your generosity and kindness. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Staub (232-9003) or [email protected]

This collection is sponsored by the Social Action Commission.

SVDP Neighbors Helping NeighborsLiving on the poverty level is tough. Illness, a family emergency, loss of a job, or similar occurrences can wreak havoc on fragile household budgets. When this occurs, the St. Vincent DePaul Society is ready to provide temporary assistance. SVDP members answer calls to our hotline seven days a week. Vincentians visit our neighbors in their homes, access the need, and provide help if possible with rent, utilities, clothing, furniture or gift cards for food and gasoline.

You, too, can help out your neighbors: • Donate household and other items that you no longer use to the St. Vincent de Paul

Thrift Store in Mount Washington or place them in the SVDP Donation Box in our parking lot. All proceeds from thrift store donations support SVDP programs such as the Charitable Pharmacy, Food Pantry, and homeless prevention program in our downtown location.

    • Use your church envelope to make a financial contribution every 5th Sunday to the IHM St. Vincent de Paul.

Join In The Ten-Year Anniversary IHM’s EnthronementImmaculate Heart of Mary Parish was solemnly enthroned to the Sacred Heart of Jesus* ten years ago, on June 19, 2009. We will renew that Covenant of Love on June 28, 2019! On the Solemnity of the Feast of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, come to noon Mass that Friday, wear red, and be a part of the ceremony as we renew our enthronement to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as King of our Parish. We will pray a Covenant Renewal Prayer and process as we sing a hymn to the King of Kings!

After Mass, please stop by the Enthronement Table in the Gathering Space for materials to enthrone your own home!

*The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart is the official and social recognition of the loving Kingship of the Heart of Jesus. It is a symbolic act of enthroning (displaying) a blessed picture or statue of the Sacred Heart in a place of honor whereby Jesus is acknowledged as the loving King and center of a parish, school, or a home. We show this recognition by a ceremony, which includes an Act of Consecration. In this way, the “family” is brought under the influence of the Divine Heart of God, which is present in all the events of the parish and home life.

Celebrate the Feast of our Patroness June 29th & 30thWear something blue, receive a rosary* as a gift and stay for cookies or doughnuts after all Masses to celebrate and honor the Patroness of our Parish, The Immaculate Heart of Mary, on her Feast Day!

The Church instituted the Feast of The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary to encourage us always to trust in our Blessed Mother as a source of grace and mercy (the Roman Missal.)

So as you receive the gift of your blessed rosary on this feast day, place your trust in our Blessed Mother and “Pray the rosary everyday…” - Our Lady of Fatima. And as the Church teaches us, let her and the powerful prayer of her rosary be a source of grace for you, your family and our world as she leads us ever closer to Jesus.

*Pamphlets on how to pray the rosary in both English and Spanish are available in the gathering space or follow along with a guide using this link: https://tinyurl.com/ihmrosary

Queen City Soup KitchenOnce a month, on a Sunday evening, IHM parishioners buy food, prepare a dinner and serve it to those in need of a meal at the Queen City Soup Kitchen. Every month a group of 8 to 12 volunteers lead by an experienced IHM coordinator perform the various tasks to help make this evening a pleasant experience in this Cincinnati neighborhood. The time commitment is less than three hours and we feed anywhere from 60 to 100 people. People experience poverty for many reasons but we can act to alleviate hunger and help provide relief for those in need.

The mission of the Queen City Soup Kitchen is to help alleviate hunger in our community in an environment of respect, care and hospitality. IHM, along with many other churches, help the Soup Kitchen fulfill this mission. For more information feel free to visit their website at www.queencitykitchen.org

Helping even once a year will help us sustain this program. For more information feel free to contact Joannie McHugh ([email protected]) or Jim Moyer ([email protected]).

Spiritual Direction as a Tool for Wellness A holistic approach to health includes the spiritual dimension of finding purpose, value, and meaning in life. One tool long available to Catholics is Spiritual Direction.

What is Spiritual Direction? • Holy listening, presence, attentiveness given to a directee in a sacred space• A covenanted relationship between director and directee• About the Holy Spirit’s call and action in your life

Who are Directors/Guides?• Lay people or members of religious communities who consciously live their own

spiritual journeys, receive direction for themselves, and have studied the art and skill of direction.

    • Directors with this ministry can come from various Catholic (Jesuit, Carmelite, etc.) or other faith traditions

Ask yourself these questions to see if you might benefit Spiritual Direction.• Do you wish that you could share your spiritual journey with someone who

understands, affirms, encourages, helps you clarify, and perhaps challenge?• Would you like to recognize more clearly the presence of the Holy Spirit, past and

present, in your life?• Do you desire to follow the Way of Jesus more clearly, fully, or faithfully?

How to start?• To find a director, go to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati web site. Under the heading

“Consecrated Life,” click on “Spiritual Directors” for a list of directors living in the Archdiocese.
