The classic vision of a vegetable garden as row upon row of leafy greens—often bordered by a white picket fence and a caretaker wearing gumboots and a sunhat—isn’t possible for most people living in urban areas where land is scarce. In Edible Landscaping, space is no issue; award-winning landscape architect Senga Lindsay reveals how a roof or windowsill can serve as a cozy home for a chic edible garden or a delicious corner retreat.

Edible Landscaping includes advice on the most resilient and rewarding edible plants, and

detailed plans for fi fteen types of urban gardens, from green roofs to children’s gardens to hang-ing containers. These plans cover everything from design elements to planting tips. Plans for the permaculture garden suggest space-saving options, like planting in guilds—that is, group together a species that exploit the same resources—and the edible boulevard plans touch on consulting with the local authorities about policies for growing on public land. Throughout the book, the gardener is encouraged to think like a designer, contemplating not just growing conditions, but space, theme and style.

Interest in sustainable food practices and a 100-mile diet has blossomed over the past few

years. Edible Landscaping demonstrates how simple it can be to accomplish this in any environ-ment, be it a boulevard, backyard or merely a balcony. In this collection of planting tips and design strategies, urban dwellers and suburbanites can grow a supply of fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs while creating a beautiful view.
