June 12-14, 2013
YMCA Camp Elphinstone
YMCA Camp Goals:
To extend the classroom into the outdoors with activities that complement the curriculum.
To foster discovery and lifelong learning.
To provide an atmosphere for students to experience greater confidence, competence, and respect for the environment.
To encourage the development of cooperation and leadership through personal achievement, self-expression and team-building.
To incorporate the YMCA values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility in each program.
Location and Travel Located near Gibsons, BC on the Sunshine Coast
Transportation by school bus from Sunrise to Horseshoe Bay
40-minute ferry ride to Langdale; walk to camp (approx. 2 km)

Accommodations and Meals
The camp holds 250 people at any one time; there may be 4-5 others schools attending camp at the same time as Sunrise Ridge. Activities and cabins are Sunrise only.
Students sleep in heated cabins with electricity.
Maximum 10 students per cabin; 2 chaperones per cabin.
Central washroom facility with showers for students.
Camp caters to allergies and dietary needs as specified prior to camp arrival. A cereal and yogurt bar is available each morning and a salad bar at lunch.
Students will bring their own snack on the first day; lunch is provided upon arrival.
Activities
Students will be divided into activity groups with a mix of gender and division; these may be different than their cabin groups.
Favourite activities in 2012 included archery, kayaking, ropes courses, fire building, and canoeing.
Group Activities Free time and whole group activities will include games such as
scavenger hunts, Capture the Flag, and basketball/volleyball.
Evening activities will include games such as Running Pictionary, drama, and campfire.
Other challenges such as the Polar Bear Swim (at 7:00 am!) will be available to those who are interested.
Supervision and Safety
YMCA Camp Elphinstone staff will run activities and provide supervision between 7:45 am and 9:15 pm.
Chaperones are expected to participate in and help supervise all activities; we will switch up the groups in order to have a chance to interact with a variety of students.
Chaperones are expected to provide overnight supervision; we will require 8 parent chaperones including 2-4 males to supervise boys’ cabins.
One chaperone must be First Aid certified, and one must bring their own vehicle to camp for emergency purposes.
Rules and Expectations Students are expected to behave respectfully at all times, both towards
staff members, chaperones, and other campers. According to the YMCA Behaviour Policy:
“Activities at camp are challenge-by-choice - campers will never be forced to do an activity in which they feel uncomfortable but they will be encouraged by their leader to try new experiences.”
Students should provide a supportive atmosphere for their peers.
No food, hair dryers, or electronics should be brought to camp; this includes cell phones and iPods as per camp policy. A phone is available in the camp office for emergency use.
Cameras are allowed, but disposable cameras are encouraged.
Pocket money will be allowed for the ferry trip; however, please limit your child to $10 each way. More than this results in overindulgence and sick students!
