OUTDOOR ACTIVITES IN KELOWNABicycling Kelowna is seriously cycle friendly with more than 240km/149mi of bicycle lanes on city streets, greenspace bike paths and mountain biking trails.

Mission creek greenwayMission Creek Greenway is the longest and most popular cycling path in Kelowna. Ride the easy gravel Phase 1 trail beneath cottonwood trees along the banks of an important Kokanee Salmon spawning stream. Phase 1 runs 7.3km/4.5mi from Mission Creek Regional Park to Okanagan Lake.

Mountain BikingThe KVR Trail, which is part of the Trans-Canada trail, is the best-known ride near Kelowna. Gentle grades on this former rail-bed make it an easy ride for everyone. Ride the 12 km/7.5mi section between the former Ruth and Myra Stations and marvel at the 16 wood-frame trestles, two steel bridges, and two tunnels it required to rim Myra Canyon. Many of these structures were destroyed in the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park fire, but have been reconstructed.

Riders in search of more extreme action with steep climbs, jumps, and stunts can check out terrain at Okanagan Mountain Park, Gillard Trails, and Crawford Trails in Kelowna. Across Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna, Powers Creek, Smith Creek and Rose Valley are popular spots, as are Knox Mountain and McDougal Rim.

Ask at the Kelowna tourist visitor centre for bicycle route maps. Staff can also provide directions to popular bike paths and mountain biking areas, and information on cycling tours.

HikingVaried landscapes, panoramic views, and historic sites make for infinitely interesting hikes around Kelowna.

In the city, walkways follow the shoreline of Okanagan Lake, run along the cottonwood-lined riparian zone bordering Mission Creek, climb the flanks of Knox Mountain and run through pocket nature preserves. South of the city, hike the tough trails of Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park. Across the lake in West Kelowna, explore pathways with a different perspective.

kelowna trailsTrails around Kelowna lead to lookouts, waterfalls, historic irrigation flumes, abandoned home-steader’s cabins, unique volcanic formations and the deep forest. Most are designed for day hikes, although there are longer overnight routes like the High Rim Trail that stretches 50km/31mi from Kelowna through Lake Country to Kalamalka Provincial Park south of Vernon.

Mission creek greenwayMission Creek Greenway is the longest and most popular trail in Kelowna. Phase 1 of the trail is an easy gravel route running 7.3km/4.5mi along the banks of a significant Kokanee Salmon spawning stream from Mission Creek Regional Park to Okanagan Lake. The 9.2km/5.7mi Phase 2 trail has more challenging sections and follows the creek eastward from the Mission Creek Regional Park into Gallagher’s Canyon.

west kelowna trailsWest Kelowna offers tremendous variety of terrain. Walk the flat pathway around the rim of Gellatly Bay to Gellatly Nut Farm, Canada’s first commercial nut farm and now a regional park. Explore forest and grassland trails in Rose Valley, Glen Canyon and Kalamoir Regional Parks. Climb the heights of Mount Boucherie, an extinct volcano, and take in the panoramic views.

Practical PointsDry grasslands are habitat for western rattlesnakes – exercise caution. Black bears are found at lower elevations and on the sub-alpine slopes. The wilderness area of the Monashee Mountains is grizzly bear habitat: hikers should carry bear spray and make enough noise to have their presence known.


KELOWNA BEACHES & PARKSKELOWNA:Cedar Creek ParkThis long and narrow pebble beach is well known and quite unique to the Okanagan. Picnic tables are available and portable washrooms are on site. Cedar Creek is Kelowna’s only dog friendly waterfront park.

Gyro BeachArguably one of Kelowna’s most well known beaches in Kelowna, Gyro is a favourite hang out for families and the younger sun-lovers. Snack venues, a rope swing, volleyball courts, playgrounds, inflatable water-park, watersport rentals, picnic areas and washroom facilities provide summertime fun for every age.

Hot Sands Beach - City ParkLocated at the centre of the Kelowna’s downtown core, City Park and Hot Sands Beach are always buzzing with excitement and activity. Enjoy the park’s long sandy beaches, volleyball and basketball courts, grassy fields, playground, waterpark, skateboard park, and washroom and changeroom facilities. Take a stroll along the boardwalk and check out the many local vendors and buskers, or chow down on a tasty burger and ice cream at the snack bar. During the summer months, live music is often scheduled on the Parks Alive! stage and the occasional movie under the stars takes place in the common field. With on-site rent-als and surrounded by downtown Kelowna’s many restaurants and retail stores, you will never run out of things to do and see at City Park & Hot Sands Beach!

Kinsmen ParkTall leafy trees and large grassy areas, give Kinsmen Park the perfect amount of sun and shade. Dip your feet into Lake Okanagan, have lunch at one of the picnic tables, play a round of tennis or enjoy the on-site playground while taking in the Okanagan heat. Kinsmen Park is fully equipped with washrooms for your convenience.

Rotary Beach ParkRotary Park has designated swimming areas, change rooms, playgrounds, picnic areas and shade trees. Known for its kite boarding and wind surfing, Rotary is the ideal spot to enjoy your favourite water sport. Sarson’s Beach ParkThis neighborhood beach sits off Lakeshore Road on the corner of Hobson and Sarson Road. Its smaller size gives the park a homey feel. A playground is located on site, and in addition, picnic tables, designated swimming areas and washroom facilities are offered.

Strathcona ParkLocated next to the Kelowna General Hospital, Strathcona Park has designated swimming areas, picnic tables, public washrooms and a playground for the young at heart. Surrounded by tall oak trees, its large grassy area provides the perfect setting to curl up with a good book or relax with friends and family.

Sutherland ParkLocated at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Ellis Street, Sutherland Park sits at the base of Knox Mountain and is perfect for those who love to be active. In addition to the grassy fields and kid friendly playground this park is equipped with tennis courts, washroom facilities and is only two steps away from the many pedestrian and bike trails Knox Mountain has to offer. Swimming at Sutherland Park is not rec-ommended due to poor water quality.

Tugboat Bay - Waterfront ParkLocated at the heart of the city, Waterfront Park has unbeatable views of Lake Okanagan, sandy beaches, beautifully landscaped gardens, washroom facilities, paddle boat rentals and boat launches. Observe Kelowna’s diverse wildlife that inhabit the Rotary Marshes located at the north end of the beach. Take a stroll, or enjoy the delicious restaurants, located along the boardwalk which follows the waters edge all the way to City Park. If you’re lucky, you may even catch some local talent on the Island performance stage.

WEST KELOWNABear Creek Provincial ParkThe swim area is narrow, marked by buoys and covers over 400 metres of coarse sandy beach lakeshore. There are also grassy areas, picnic spots and change rooms in the day use area of the provincial park.

Gellatly Nut FarmThis historic nut farm also has a swimming beach! Large shade trees, a small rock beach with a gradual slope into the water, grass and a playground nearby make this a perfect off the beaten path swimming beach to enjoy.

Marina ParkThis park has a pebble beach, a grass area, a covered picnic facility and a playground. It is perfect for those with small children as both the park and beach areas are fenced in.
