SALTFORD SINGERS ARE CLOSING DOWN
TIDs is an article that I wish that I did nol have to At their AGM OD the 11th July 2001, a majority of Sahford reluctantly approved a motion for closure. This, after 23 years of enjoyable companionship and music making. You know that for may years the Singers have suffered a lack of vocal balance that has restricted their musical aspirations and concert offerings. Also tempus fugits and age takes a loll on some voices. Despite our best attempts, we have been unable to recruit new members to rejuvernate the choir. Consequently. we have difficulty in conductors who, nalurally, wish to raise our standards and achieve the choir's aim of maintaining a standard of concert In our we remember the pleasant limes and kind words expressed after so many of our concerts. We thank you sincerely for your support. We also wish to record our appreciation for the and support we have received from the SCA and the friends. relatives and others in helping to stage our concerts. We leave to the SCA a very healthy financial and a substantial library of music not to mention an excellent piano and other miscellaneous Is it too much to hope thaI a new group will now emerge tbat would take advantage of these and continue the SCA'S aspirations of fostering community activities? Now is your chance, why not take it? Phone Daphne on 01225 873349 if you would like to discuss a new initiative. - Leslie Hanson. Chairman

WARTIME IN SALTFORD Does anyone remember the plane crash in Saltford Station yard in 1941? On 9th October that year, two Westland Whirlwind
3
twin engined fighters of 263 squadron at Down collided and both crashed,
one in the station yard and the other at Kelston. The pilot of the one at Saltford Pilot Officer J.H. Hoskins was killed while the other pilot baled out and landed in the main street of Weston village. Saltford wasn't in the thick of it, but things did happen and like every other community everyone was involved 10
some extent in the war effort. Were you in Saltford at that time? Even if you weren't you would be very welcome to join the reunion of of Sahford who have memories of the war. We will be meeting in the Wansdyke Room at Saltford Hall on Tuesday September 11th at 2.3Opm. If you have memories but are unable to attend, please contact us on 01225 873231 and someone will arrange to meet you. Bunty Dunford

Open Day at Saltford HaU
The Saltford Community Association celebrates its 40th anniversary in October of this year. To mark this occasion the S.C.A. plan 10 have an "Open Day" and have an exhibition depicting the history of the S.C.A. and the building and how the Hall is used loday. The population of Saltford is changing. We feci many new residents are nol aware of the many activities take in the hall and that an open would be an opportunity for all residents to sec what is available. We understand many local are having recruiting new members as does the S.C.A. - perhaps an ·Open Day· may encourage new interest.
If you are a memht!r of II local charity or orgIInisatioo that use the hall and would 1ik2 to tak2 pm1 in the "Open Day" Bnd hBye B stall (free of charge) to advertise your oFganisstioo, send a ~ by 20 August to the Bt either 54, Drive, Keynsham or 34, JJeresford Close, Sald'ord. (The note should state the Name of the Organisation and the Cootac:t Persoo)
The S.C.A. will undertake to be for all advertjsing for the even!. Your attendance and any comments or ideas would be very much appreciated. The more organisations that take part the more interesting and successful the day will be. Julia Chandler, Chairman

ASSOCIATION NEWS - PROJECT 0102
Since the first article in this series there have been several significant changes for organisations in Saltford. The Youth Club has closed, Saltford Recorded Music Society (one of our oldest) has wound up and Saltford Singers is unable to continue to provide it's special brand of entertainment. This is sad. There may be more in the pipeline but this will not deter the SCA from maintaining and improving facilities for clienUuser groups in Saltford Hall and from whom we are seeking suggestions to assist us in a comprehensive refurbishment progamme. We are also currently conducting an audit into all aspects of the Hall and it's functions.
Already Anthony Tonkin and the Building Committee are busy meeting new regulations regarding pre-school play groups so that a new one can open shortly.
Under our operating licence with B&NES Council we are now required by law to produce a writt.en Health & Safety policy that includes regular risk assessment in Hall usage. Outcomes from this will certainly affect our clienUuser groups.
Compliance with these regulations may mean altering working practices on the premises.
For instance, we must find storage space for 240 chairs used in the Main Hall and Wansdyke Room and it is obligatory that we comply with all changes in legislation.
We may have to conduct another risk assessment survey when the various rooms in the complex are in use. Please bear with us. The SCA are committed to ensuring that Saltford Hall is a safe and satisfactory facility for aJI users. This does not imply that it has been unsafe in the past: it simply means that we will comply with all the new regulations to the letter.
However, if you do find some changes difficult to accept, please contact one of our officers for help or advice.
Information from David Roberts.

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clerk - P. Godfrey, 489, Bath Road, Saltford, Bristol BSJI JBA Tel: 4(X)()58
I have been a busy little bee shuffling paper from here to there and desperately trying to keep my head above water, whilst paddling frantically below the surface. My two fingers are nearly worn out pummelling away on the keyboard but at long last I seem to understand what is really needed. Things can only get better - I will probably wish I .lever said that' So here is the news you have all been waiting to hear: COUNCILLORS SURGERIES rhe next Surgery is from 10 am to 12 noon on Saturday 28th July in the Parish Council Office at the rear of Davies and Way. Councillor R.F Williams will be pleased to see anyone who can call in. POOP SCOOPS I have not been exactly inundated with requests for these, in fact so far only one person I)as obtained them from the office. These are FREE and if every dog walker would use them it would help keep our pavements so much cleaner to walk on., "lEW YOurH SHELTER Have you seen the new Youth Shelter on the sports field near to Saltford Hall - is it what you expected? It would be good to have some feed back so that the Council knows your thoughts as this is helpful if and when further projects raise their heads. NEW PARISH COUNCILLOR By the time you read this we will have had a new Parish Councillor come and join us. Ne shall be looking forward to working with that person and putting them to work on various committees. Why not come along to our Council meetjngs to see who is representing you on the Council - there is time allotted for you to speak if you so wish . I have a whale of a time! Peter Godfrey, Saltford Parish Clerk 400058. Environmental Committee Items: POORL Y MAINTAINED PROPERTY AND GARDENS IN SAL TFORD. A number of residents have mentioned to members of the Parish Council that homes "ldjoining theirs have been neglected, look unsightly and would be likely to put off prospective buyers of nearby homes. The Parish Council Environmental Comminee jiscussed this matt.er at its meeting on the 15 May. The main features of such homes seem to be::-
- Gardens left to grow out of control with long grass, weeds and brambles. - Gutters clogged with grass and birds nests, sagging and likely to bring down
neighbouring gutters. - Derelict vehicles parked and left for years in front gardens. - Peeling paint work and broken windows giving a derelict look to the
neighbourhood. $altford Parish Council and B&NES Council have powers to communicate with offending householders about the state of their properties and/or gardens if there are health and safety problems to passers-by, for instance if bushes overhang pavements. The Parish Council would therefore like to encourage Saltford Residents to do their best to keep their properties neat and tidy, as the vast majority already are.

Parish Council News - continued
RATS We all know tbat rats are potentially Public Enemy No I because they spread diseases of many types, infest where they congregate and invade our homes (if allowed to) where they nest and breed prolifically . As unwanted co-habitees, they can do unseen damage - even cause fires by gnawing through electric cables. Rats are scavengers eating almost anything they find . Therefore, don't leave kitchen scraps unprotected so that they can help themselves. They love fallen fruit and bits that fall from bird !.abies . Make life as difficult as you can for them. But why all this fuss, you say? You've probably never seen one. Well they live furtive lives - rarely seen. The fact is, though, not one of us is more then 10 metres from a live rat. So if you ever see one report it to B&NES Pest Control Office immediately . There ' ll be plenty more where that came from. Saltford Parish Council and the Environment Committee are already taking a number of initiatives against them .

SAL TFORD MORNING TG June and July saw the Wansdyke Room full for two mornings of talks on two different types of homes. The first one concerned a house that is now the home of a section of Bath namely Newton Park College, almost on our Mrs MedcaJf outlined the history of the

house and described some of the past inhabitants who lived in a rather manner. Nowadays, it hums with the activities of students who the fabulous setting of the and the view and gardens. The second was further away and
none of the members had it a thought as a "home". Indeed, The Tower of London does not appear very homely with hordes of but three different groups regard it as "home". First there are the ravens, a select and cosseted bunch of residents.
of course, there are the Yeoman Warders and administrators who live in what is a of the
atmosphere, with many attributes. The third
group, the ghosts, seen and heard by several of the residents. Two views of in the tower were

and living such a very hard life. A wine and quiz evening is to be held at 9 Rodney Road on the 14th JUly. Due to holidays etc. the number of members at the July meeting was fewer than usual. SALTFORD FLORAL CLUB The months are going fast hut we have had a most encouraging period for the Club since my last report. The demonstrations have been excellent with much to whet our appetites, with arrangements from Ruth Langfield in June with her afternoon of "Summer Simplicity" using all the beautiful flowers of an early English summer. Then in May and July we were taught new ways of using flowers and foliage
18
with the talented Rosemary Stevens, first showing her interpretation of a "Cascade" arrangements. People were most enthusiastic, going home with the super arrangements they had created -eager for the next class please! In July we had Diana Oliver for the first time and she showed us how to do "Patchwork Tapestry" but using flowers and foliage, again and a lesson enjoyed by everyone. Flowers are a beautiful medium to work with and creating something oneself is both rewarding and relaxing as the level of concentration blocks out all ot.her thoughts! In fact, these afternoons are proving most popular. The August meeting will be Members day and we shall celebrate our Ruby Anniversary with a special lunch for t.he occasion and, of course, an occasion such as this cannot pass wit.hout ... "The Cake", to be cut later in the afternoon. All in all a happy programme for the weeks ahead. The Club was asked to support the Flower Festival at St John's Keynsham at the end of June and as many of you will have seen, presented a group of arrangements depicting Psalm 150. It was good to participate in this festival of Music and Praise and everyone enjoyed the challenge presenting some excellent work. The event proved a great success with cheques being presented to the three charities concerned, Dorothy House, St Peter's and Children Away (the charity for abused and ill-tre-ated children to have the chance to get a break). Our trip to Beckford Silks in the CoL<;wolds gave us the opportunity to get together for a really good day out. We had lunch at Beckford Inn followed by a fascinating and instructive tour of the
Silk where we found block silk paintlng most interesting .. the fabrics and colours simply exquisite. Our return journey was via the scenic route stopping at Prinknash Abbey for tea and the chance to browse in the shop there. Although it rained intermittently it did not hand icap us at all as the storms were either during our or whilst in the mills, with brilliant sunshine for the rest of the day and during the lovely journey home from the Cotswolds. I hope this you some idea of the many and varied activities enjoyed by Saltford Floral Club and that we may see you at some of our fulllre Demonstrations 2. 4th the Month, Practice Classes alternate 4th All in Saltford Hall. KEYNSHAM ORCHESTRA Our Summer concert at Saltford Hall on July 7th included violin and vocal solos three of our members, accompanied by the orchestra. We also played selections from The Sound of Music and West Side Story overtures by Offenbach and Sullivan and suites by Coleridge-Taylor and Eric Coates. A popular programme, well received by the audience, The numbers attending were smaller than at our February concert, which was a little but due no doubt to the season, Wimbledon and several other music events on the same
Rehearsals again on Tuesday September 4th at St Dunstan's Church Hall Keynsb.arn. We are a friendly group and would welcome more players especially violas. Please contact our Chairman on 0117 9445701 or Secretary on 0117 085 8269.
