2019 4-H Photography Themes

County Theme – Color Red – Celebrate the Nǀ150 by capturing the color “red” in your photograph.

Unit 2 Theme Print – Beautiful Nebraska: Nebraska’s state song, Beautiful Nebraska, talks of peaceful prairieland, rivers, hills of sand, dark green valleys, and rainbows reaching to the ground. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone has their own idea of what makes Nebraska great. Entries in the theme print class should capture and share what the exhibitor finds beautiful in or about Nebraska. Unit 3 Theme Print - Nǀ150 – 4-H members enrolled in Mastering Photography Unit 3 are invited to celebrate Nǀ150 by exhibiting in the Theme Print (class B182060). The top exhibit(s) from each county will be selected to advance to the Nebraska State Fair. February 15, 2019 marked 150 years of history to appreciate, impact to unpack, and stories to tell. Much has happened since 1869, all for the purpose of changing lives, advancing knowledge, and fulfilling dreams. How has the University of Nebraska impacted you, your family, or your community? How can you tell this story through photography?

Model Rocket Change

In the past, rockets such as Viking and Wizard have been identified as a level 1 rocket. However, when you go to the website to look up these rockets, the classification has been changed to an intermediate rocket, aka level 2. With this change from the manufactures, we will now be accepting these rockets as level 2 at the County Fair and State Fair. Please keep in mind that some of the

packages that can be purchased may still say level 1 because I’m under the assumption that the manufacturer is not going to recall the items just to repackage them.

Rocket Kits Available We have 2 rocket kits available at the Extension Office left over from the Model Rocket Workshop. They are Estes Baby Bertha and recommended for ages 10+. Cost is $15.00 each. These are State Fair eligible.

Need Your Help in the Static Building It is that time of year again—FAIR TIME!!!  This year

we are asking families to help us supervise the 4‐H Static building.  This is a wonderful opportunity to see all of the exhibits, meet other 4‐H families, ask questions, and to get ideas for next year.  It is also our way of protecting the exhibits inside.

Patrolling the building consists of walking through the building periodically to make sure projects have not been moved, played with or damaged.  You do not have to physically sit in the building the entire shift—just be present and check your name off the list once the next volunteer arrives.  The list will be at the south end of the building by the double doors.

The time schedule was emailed out to everyone on July 15. If you are interested, please call the extension office at 402‐288‐5611. The areas highlighted in gray are times help is not needed.  Any time slots not filled will be times that the 4‐H Static building is open unsupervised and will put our 4‐Her’s projects at risk.

Thank you for considering this volunteer opportunity and for all that you do to make the “best” BETTER!!!

What’s In a Ribbon Placing?

When we get ready to exhibit our projects at the Fair sometimes it’s good to take a ‘time out’ and remember what the true meanings are of the different colors of ribbons. Over the years, I think we have been ‘trained’ to think that red, and even blue ribbons are bad but this simply isn’t the case. The criteria listed on the scoresheets is used to help determine the ribbon placing: Purple: All areas should be outstanding. There should not be obvious flaws in workmanship. Blue: All areas should be rated in the very good or outstanding categories. The exhibit is generally acceptable, but with one or two areas that are not the very best they could be. Red: Ratings would generally fall in the average or needs improvement categories, with possible one very good. The exhibit has several areas that are less than perfect. White: The exhibit has many problems. It is not neatly done or durable. The design principles are not evident.

County Fair Livestock Information

Classing Beef Animals for 2019 Since the State Fair changed classing the market beef by weight and not height, the county fair will also be classing market beef by weight. Breeding Heifers and Feeder Calves will be classed by age (birthdate).

Bucket Calf Project

Bucket calves need to be entered on Thursday, August 8 from 9-11 am and may be released after the show on Friday or stay the entire fair.

Bucket Calf projects will be judged on 3 factors: 1/3 project record book; 1/3 interview; and 1/3 show ability of animal (handling, cleanliness, health). Bucket calf record books must be turned into the 4-H Fair Office by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8 so that the record book judging can take place prior to the show. The Bucket Calf Show will start at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9th. (No record book for Clover Kids bucket calf.) Bucket Calves will not be allowed to participate in the Feeder Calf Showmanship that starts at 1:00 p.m. This is for feeder calves only. Bucket Calf showmanship will be part of the Bucket Calf Show. Recognition will be given to the top record book score, top interview score, and top show score in the Bucket Calf Show.

Bucket Calf Record Books Bucket calf record books are split into a Beginning Level (ages 8-12 on Jan 1) and Advanced Level (ages 13 & over on Jan 1). Contact the office for a record book or they are available at http://extension.unl.edu/statewide/knox/animal-resources/

4-H Round Robin Contest

The 9th Annual 4-H Round Robin Showmanship Contest will be held on Sunday, August 11 following the Large Beef Show or approximately 4:00 p.m. 4-H Dress Code is required. The Round Robin Showmanship Contest provides an opportunity for the 4-H Champion and Reserve Champion Senior and Junior Division Showman from the large animal species (horse, small beef, sheep, swine, and large beef) to compete for the best all-around senior and junior showman honors at the fair. It is very possible that one of the reserve showman could be named as Champion Round Robin Showman. Complete rules are available on page 18 of the fairbook.

Belt Buckles for Round Robin Contest Belt buckles will be given to the Champion and Reserve Champion Senior and Junior Showman. Thanks to Jesse & Adele Rader, Rader Feed & Supply LLC, Creighton for sponsoring the belt buckles.

Livestock Vet Inspection

There will be a veterinarian responsible for inspecting your beef, dairy, swine, sheep and goats for clinical health signs as they are checked in. Animals cannot unload until he gives his approval. The vet will be in the area on the east side of the Harm & Tulleys Event Center to inspect animals before unloading.

County Fair Wood Chips and Clean-Up

There will be a pile of coarse wood mulch outside the Harm & Tulleys Event Center that is available for all livestock exhibitors in the Event Center. All exhibitors will be responsible for getting their own wood mulch to their stalls. Please bring wheel barrels and shovels if you have them. There may be a limited supply to borrow. There will NOT be bags of wood chips this year, there will be totes of wood chips available for sheep, goat, bucket calf and swine exhibitors. All exhibitors will be responsible for getting their own wood chips to their stalls. Please bring wheel barrels and shovels if you have them. There may be a limited supply to borrow. All exhibitors in the Event Center will be responsible for cleaning up their stalls when they leave on Sunday night. This means cleaning up all the wood chips and taking to the designated area or dumpsters, which will be posted. Please bring rakes to clean the chips out of the sand. Clean-up for exhibitors in the Sheep/Goat Barn will be posted. No manure will be piled on the west side of the Sheep/Goat Barn. Be resourceful in your use of the wood chips. Pens/stalls do not have to be changed every day - they can be spot cleaned. Feed and water buckets are not to be in pens except during feeding or watering times. Again, we appreciate the cooperation of all 4-H and FFA families.

Exhibitors selling their pigs will need to sign a Country of Origin form and a HACCP Food Guaranty form.

Breeding Swine Class - Each exhibit is eligible to enter one gilt in the Breeding Swine Class. You must decide at check-in which gilt you are entering and the breeding gilt is not eligible for the Rate-of-Gain Contest. The decision at the scale is final. No changes can be made to market or breeding after check-in.

It is extremely important that hogs are not fed in the wash racks as it clogs up the drainage system. Please feed them in their pens! Please do not use any oil based products on your hogs, because this interferes with the tattoos.

Watering Information for Pigs at Fairs Benny Mote, UNL Swine Extension Specialist has shared information about providing water to your pigs at fair time. Benny shares that water is the most important nutrient you provide your pig to keep them looking and performing their best. What Is Herdsmanship?

This may be old news to many of our 4-H members, but it is important for ALL of us to remember what Herdsmanship is about if you are exhibiting livestock at the County Fair. Herdsmanship is the way that a 4-Her displays his or her animals at the Fair. It refers to how neat and attractive 4-H members keep the livestock barn. It also shows how well you care for your animals. At County Fair, State Fair, AKSARBEN and other events 4-H’ers are judged on Herdsmanship. The overall purpose of this is to: 1. Develop knowledge and skill in proper handling and stabling of livestock. 2. Develop knowledge & skill in proper care and use of equipment. 3. Present to Fair visitors a neat, attractive, and well-kept livestock exhibit. 4. Develop club spirit, pride, and cooperation. Let’s all put forth an extra effort with Herdsmanship this year to present an inviting atmosphere to the public.

This We Believe… 4‐H boys and girls are more important than 4‐H projects.

Learning how to do a project is more important than the project itself.

To “learn by doing” through a useful work project is fundamental in any sound educational program and characteristic of the 4‐H program.

Generally speaking, there is more than one good way of doing most things.

Our job is to teach 4‐H members how to think, not what to think.

A balanced program of work and play, geared to the individual needs of all interested youth, is more important than “grooming winners.”

Sound growth of programs and numbers of boys and girls reached are important measures of vitality.

Competition is a natural human trait and should be recognized as such in 4‐H work. It should be given no more emphasis than other 4‐H fundamentals.

Every 4‐H members needs to be noticed, to feel important, to win, and to be praised.

No 4‐H award is worth sacrificing the reputation of a 4‐H member or leader.

A blue ribbon 4‐H boy with a red ribbon chicken is more desirable than a red ribbon boy with a blue ribbon chicken.
