Crazy and Calm Big Idea: Have the children wave their streamers to create crazy and calm waters. What You Need: Blue streamers made during Craft Time. (You may want to make a few extras in case some get damaged during the activities.)

What You Do: During the Activity: Have each child take their streamer and go to an open area in the classroom. Tell the children you are going to play a fun game. When you say, “Crazy,” have kids wave their streamers really fast and when you say, “Calm,” have kids freeze. Repeat as many times as desired. After the Activity: Ask the Key Question and answer with the Bottom Line. What You Say: Before the Activity: “Hey friends, come spread out over here. (Help kids spread out if needed.) Super! Today in our Bible lesson we heard how there was a great big storm.” During the Activity: “Everybody take a streamer, and when I say, ‘Crazy,’ I want you to wave your streamers really fast. When I say, ‘Calm,’ I want you to freeze. Here we go. Crazy! Wave your streamers really fast! Calm! Now freeze! Great job! Crazy! (Pause.) Calm!” (Repeat as many times as desired.) After the Activity: “Today we learned that Jesus can do anything. Jesus calmed the storm by telling it to stop! Who can do that? Only Jesus can do that!”

Memory Verse –

Parachute Fun Big Idea: Pretend the parachute is the waves and create crazy and calm waters for the inflatable toy boat. What You Need: Parachute and boat What You Do: Before the Activity: Have the children stand around the parachute and each child should hold a portion of the parachute so that it is off of the ground. During the Activity: Toss the boat onto the parachute. Encourage the children to move their arms up and down to move the parachute and bounce the boat. Then say, “STOP.” Have everyone stop and let the parachute go still. Then instruct the children to start again. Repeat as desired. What You Say: Before the Activity: “Today in our lesson, Jesus stopped the storm and saved the men on the boat. I bet that was a bumpy ride before the storm stopped! It must have been super scary! During the Activity: “Everyone pick up the parachute. (Point.) Let’s pretend we are the storm and move our arms up and down to make the water very wavy! (Move the parachute.) Wow! You guys are a great storm! STOP! (Have children stop.) Now let’s put a boat in our storm. (Toss on the boat.) Now let’s make the storm again! (Move parachute again.) STOP! Great job! This is what it must have been like in our lesson—very scary and wavy … and then still! Let’s do it again!” After the Activity: “You are very good at making a storm and then stopping it just like Jesus did. Jesus is the only one who can stop a real storm because he has control over everything! Who can do that? Only Jesus can do that!”

Making a Storm Big Idea: Children will create a stormy sky inside their zipper bag with black and white paint. What You Need: Freezer zipper bags, painter’s tape, white and black tempera paint What You Do: Before the Activity: Squirt a couple drops of black and white paint into the zipper bags. Seal and secure to the table with tape around all four sides. Make sure to squeeze out all the excess air so the bag is as flat as possible. During the Activity: Have kids mix the paint around by rubbing their hands and fingers all around the bag. Talk about how the colors combined. Ask kids what they think the color reminds them of. After the Activity: Review the Bible lesson. What You Do: Before the Activity: “What colors do you see in your bag? (Pause.) That’s right, black and white.” During the Activity: “Rub your hands and fingers over the bag and mix the colors together. (Demonstrate if needed.) Look at that, you made a new color! What color did you make? (Pause.) Gray! That’s right! What does that color remind you of? (Pause.) Those are all great answers! Gray reminds me of storm clouds!” After the Activity: “Today we heard a Bible lesson about a big storm with lots of gray clouds. What did Jesus do to show He has power over storms in our lesson today? (Pause for responses.) Yes! Jesus calmed the storm! He told it to stop and it stopped! We need to remember that whenever we get afraid of a storm. Jesus is more powerful than a storm! Who can do that? Only Jesus can do that!”

What You Need: Large craft sticks, clear packing tape, dark blue paper streamers, light blue paper streamers, ruler and scissors What You Do: Before the activity: Cut the streamers into 2-foot sections so each child gets two sections of the light blue streamers and two sections of the dark blue streamers. At the end of the activity: Allow the child to play with their streamer by starting Activity #1 What You Say: Before the activity: “Do you know what the big pushes of water in the ocean are called? What washes over your toes when you walk on the sand? (Pause.) Yes, those are called waves. We do not have an ocean in our class room today, but we can still make waves.” During the activity: (Hand out craft sticks and streamers.) “We are going to tape the streamers to the sticks so that we can make our own waves. (Help the child tape the streamers to the craft stick and write the child’s name on the craft stick.) There we go! These are going to be your waves!” At the end start Activity 1: “Now that we have our wave sticks, let’s make some waves! Small Group Time What you Need: Parent Take Home Card, Blue Playdoh, People Cookie Cutters, Rolling Pins, Pretend Boats and Sticker Roll SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): “Raise your hand if you like Playdoh. (Pause and raise your own hand.) I do too! Today, I have some really awesome boats we can play with. And look what else I have? (Pause.) Blue Playdoh and people cookie cutters! Remember in today’s lesson, Jesus calmed the storm. (Pause for responses.) Can you imagine what that would even look like? Jesus stood up and told the wind and the waves to STOP and they listened to Him! WOW! Only Jesus could do that! Who can do that? Only Jesus could do that! Can we make Jesus out of these cookie cutters and then add some blue water and a boat to retell our lesson. (Have each child make a Jesus figure with the people cookie cutters and help them add some blue water for the boat to sail on.)” “Have you ever been afraid of a storm? Maybe the thunder was really loud or the rain was hard? I have! When I was younger I would get afraid during bad storms all the time. But I don’t anymore. You want to know why? Because I know Jesus has power over everything, just like in our Bible lesson today. What did Jesus do to show He has power over storms in our lesson today? (Pause for responses.) Yes! Jesus calmed the storm! He told it to stop and it stopped! We need to remember that whenever we get afraid of a storm. Jesus is more powerful than a storm! Who can do that? Only Jesus can do that!” SGL: “Yes, He can! Tell me again: Who can do that? ‘Only Jesus can do that! Today we’re going to make a list of things we think are powerful. What do you think of when I say the word ‘powerful’? When I say your name, tell me what you think. (Go around the table and let children respond.) Wow, what a list! These are some powerful things! Jesus can do anything! These are all amazing stories of Jesus doing the impossible. Only Jesus can do all of these things! Jesus has power over ALL those things. He can do the impossible. Who can do that? Only Jesus can do that! Ok, it’s time to review our lesson. I am going to ask you some questions and you will get a sticker for answering them. I have some really cool sticker today. Are you ready? (Pause) Great! (Ask the children the questions from the “Parent Take Home Cards”. You can also make up additional questions from our video lesson. Don’t forget to ask them to say their memory verse for another sticker. You can repeat the same questions over and over as repetition is good for preschoolers.) You are such great listeners!” “Now I’ll pray before it’s time to say goodbye until next week. (Read the prayer on the back of the “Parent Take Home Card.”)”
