WKAR will be at the Jazz Fest recording upcoming programs for the new season of BackStage Pass. And we’ll be at the Folk Festival on the City Hall Stage.

Great Performances at the MetWednesday, July 25, 7 p.m. at WKAR

WKAR will host a sneak preview of the upcoming Great Performances at the Met production of Satyagraha. Preview guest Molly Fillmore, an associate pro-fessor of voice in the College of Music at Michigan State University, appears as Mrs. Naidoo in the Philip Glass opera which follows the life of Mahatma Gandhi during his early life in South Africa. It was here that he developed the revolutionary philosophy of non-violent resistance that continues to be used in protests around the world. The opera was hailed by the Washington Post as “a profound and beautiful work of theater.”The event is free but advance reserva-tions are required at WKAR.org.

The Small Matter of Big Science Monday, July 30, 7 p.m. at WKAR

The Small Matter of Big Science is a two-part video series exploring the evolution of science through the lens of nuclear physics. The first episode takes viewers from mankind’s basic curiosity about our origins all the way to modern isotope research at the National Super-conducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University.

The sneak preview of this series will include not only video but a talk with Dr. Konrad Gelbke, director at the NSCL and Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).The event is free but advance reser-vations are required at WKAR.org.For additional information, contact Becky Scheel at (517) 432-3120, ext. 354.Molly Fillmore

Market Warriors | Mondays at 9 p.m., beginning July 16Treasure hunters embark on an antiques adventure in Market Warriors, from the producers of Antiques Roadshow. Expert shoppers scour flea markets across the country for vintage valuables, selling their finds at auction with an eye towards maximizing profit. Fred Willard hosts.

Masterpiece Mystery!Sundays at 9 p.m.Before Inspector Morse, there was the rookie Constable Endeavour Morse, ready to resign from police work until a murder turns up that only he can solve. Shaun Evans stars in Endeavour as the young Morse, before his signature red Jaguar, but with deductive powers already running in high gear (July 1).On July 8, Kevin Whately and Lawrence Fox return in new episodes of Inspector Lewis, solving cases in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford. The season opens with the discovery of a ritual burial of an obsessive Oxford English professor, with the team’s work complicated by an amateur detective. Later episodes deal with the death of a lovelorn professor, the murder of a babysitter and the strangling of a guest lecturer.

The British Are Coming!WKAR and PBS continue their own British Jubilee with new episodes of The Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work (continuing through July 9) and two new series.Michael Wood returns to public television with the Story of England, following the English village of Kibworth through 2,000 years. Kibworth lived through the Black Death, the English Civil War, the Industrial Revolution and World War II.(Premieres July 3.) Queen & Country (premieres on July 1 at 8 p.m.) celebrates Elizabeth II as England marks Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. Sir Trevor McDonald looks at the traditions and institutions surrounding the monarchy, from Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace through the queen’s royal visits to some of the greatest historic palaces.

A Capitol FourthWednesday, July 4, 8 & 9:30 p.m.Celebrate America’s birthday with A Capitol Fourth, an Independence Day tradition. Unrivaled performances from some of the country’s best-known musical artists are topped off by a terrific display of fireworks, live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.Tom Bergeron hosts.

During Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee Year, WKAR joins the celebration with a number of programs tied to Britain and the monarchy.

Reporter Gretchen Millich Retires

Veteran reporter, Gretchen Millich, retired from WKAR last month. Millich reported on the mid-Michigan community for 22 years, focusing on what listeners jokingly call “cops and critters.” She was

also heard occasionally as a substitute host for All Things Considered and as a regular fundraising host on Morning Edition.

But Millich’s beat covered more than “cops and critters.” She’s also reported on public policy, legal issues, the arts and the environment. Her work has resulted in awards from the Associated Press, Michigan Association of Broadcasters, Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the State Bar of Michigan, among others.

Away from the microphone, Millich played a key role as director of WKAR’s statewide call-in programs, featuring governors, state lawmakers and candidates.

Gretchen worked briefly for WKAR in the 1970s. She then worked at WAMU in Washington D.C. and as a producer on the staff of All Things Considered at NPR. She returned to WKAR in 1990.

“I’ve had so much fun as a reporter for WKAR. I’ve gone bear-hunting, fishing in Lake Superior, wine-tasting and got up close and personal with eagles,” says Millich. “I’ve found that people in Michigan love this state, and they care about our lakes, wildlife, arts and communities. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know many of these caring people, and it’s enriched my life.” Gretchen Millich’s work at WKAR has enriched the lives of station’s listeners as well. Radio Reader Offers Baseball StoryRadio Reader | Weekdays at 8:30 a.m. on WKAR AM 870Writer John Grisham takes a departure from his typical white-collar crime novels with the newest radio reader offering, “Calico Joe.” Dick Estell begins the novel on July 13.When he arrived in Philadelphia, a cab delivered Joe Castle to Veterans Stadium, where he was quickly fitted for a uniform and hustled onto the field. Understandably, he was nervous when the manager said, "Get loose. You're starting at first and hitting seventh."

Joe Castle was the wonder of baseball, the greatest rookie anyone had ever seen. Then a pitcher threw a fast ball at his head and both their careers were over.

The Washington Post wrote of Calico Joe, ”It’s a sweet, simple story, a fable really. And like all fables, it has a moral: Good can come out of evil; it’s never too late to confess your sins and seek forgiveness.”
