St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound
July 2020 Soundings
I was on the phone with a fellow priest the other day. He asked how I was doing, and I replied that I felt that my live was beginning to unravel around the edges. He
remarked that he had had roughly the same conversation with three other people this week.
So much of what we think of as our lives is based on habit, schedule and the familiar. We are all familiar with this of crisis when plans and schedules are thrown out the window for the difficult period. When that happens, we are usually surrounded by people still living their familiar lives, and their stability helps to carry us through. This is one of the great gifts of the Church; a family of brothers, sisters, friends who can maintain love, and hope, and faith in moments when we can feel none of it.
Unfortunately, to one degree or another, we are all going through the same crisis at the same time. All our familiar habits and plans have been set aside for the moment, and that moment does seem to be dragging on.
Having made my confession to my friend I’ve begun to look at my day to day self more closely. I’ve remembered a saying from a parishioner in my first church, Emerson Waite, a retired psychology professor known for his aphorisms. The one which see apropos is, “If you go through the motions, the emotions will follow.” We cannot control what the world is doing around us, but we can set some of the parameters of how we face it.
I’ve begun to lay ahold of some old habits. Before I get out of bed in the morning, I say, “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” This familiar verse from Psalm 118 sets a course for the day. Morning Prayer allows me to deliberately remember my own concerns, and those others have shared with me. Whether I’m working from home or the office, I put on a clerical shirt (and real pants). And, at the end of the day, I set aside what I picked up in the morning with Compline, “Keep me, O Lord, as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings.”
No miracles yet, but it feels good to step onto some of the old paths, and we’ll see if Dr. Waite’s spiritual direction helps to carry me through. It doesn’t have to be formal or pious, but if it is familiar it can be helpful. In a world where the pieces are scattered, “go through the motions” and you may find them being pulled back together.
The Rectors Reckonings
I forgot to water a few of our plants a couple of weeks
ago. I normally water them once a week, on the weekends. And by Tuesday or Wednesday, I looked at it and saw this. It was very clear what was wrong. I’m not sure how I missed the transition from healthy and happy to clearly unwell. I’m not sure when I stopped noticing what was going on right in front of me. But I was glad to be able to see the problem now. However, just being able to see it didn’t mean I could fix it quickly. If you’ve ever tried
to water dry house plants, you know that the water just goes right through the dry soil and out the bottom. Instead, you have to start slowly. Sometimes, you might even be better placing the pot in a larger basin of water and letting the soil, and then the plant, soak it in.
We’re in a climate right now where it can feel like trying to drink from a water hose as we learn or re-learn or finally notice some of the injustices in our country, in our community. But rather than be overwhelmed by the firehose, perhaps we need simply to stand in water and start to soak some of it in. Rather than try to change or fix everything, perhaps we start with a slower stream, examining our own lives and biases, reading black authors, listening to podcasts or broadcasts from people of color.
There is work to be done and certainly we Christians are called to take part. Opening ourselves up to learning is a small step, but it is a beginning. Acknowledging we have things to learn and admitting when we’ve learned them allows us to grow. My plant perked back up after a few hours. It’ll take us a little longer, but I hope you’re finding ways to soak in the water that will quench the back-bending thirst of injustices we’re being invited to confront.
FROM OUR CURATE
SUPPER CLUB REIMAGINED
As of the end of May, the church’s finances were in
good shape because we were able to obtain PPP funding for payroll and utilities. The PPP funds were used for April and May expenses and have now been exhausted. Without those funds, we would be in a ($46,000) deficit. Most likely the June financial statements will show that our pledge and non-pledged income will be 50% below what we need to cover the minimum expenses. As you are able, please continue to support St. Andrew’s as we navigate through the second half of 2020. And thank you for all you have done!

Flowers On-the-Sound
In June, we were busy adding the finishing touches to our Youth Sunday 2020 Service. I am so proud of all our amazing youth for doing a fabulous job on their readings and musical pieces. Even though it was different this year because we had to do it virtually, it was a very special and beautiful service! We also had a chance to come together for our end of the year celebration with brunch in the church parking lot on June 7th. Besides having conversations and snacks while catching up using our social distancing between families/assign parking spaces, we enjoyed a game of parking lot charades. Each family was given a set of cards with different actions on them. We went around and each family took turns guessing the action cards of the family next to them in the parking lot. It offered a great time for creativity, family teamwork, and fun times! Thank you to everyone who has supported youth ministry in our church this year, whether through participating in a fundraiser, praying for those attending a youth conference, or making a meal for our weekly meeting!

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the
will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
The closure of our preschool due to COVID-19 in March was difficult for all of us - the students, the teachers, the parents. And as the months of stay at home orders and physical distancing dragged on, our spirits plummeted. We missed learning, laughing, playing and just BEING together. There were days when rejoicing and giving thanks in all circumstances seemed too much to ask. Praying without ceasing was, of course, the solution; guiding us to make a concerted effort to find the joy in each day. Facebook posts of students with their art projects or seedlings grown from seed packets that we delivered in our monthly activity bags. Video texts from parents with their child saying The Lord’s Prayer or singing Jesus Loves Me. Emails from parents checking in to see how we were all doing.
On June 1st with abundant joy, we celebrated our 4 year old class with a drive-up graduation. It was a wonderful morning that provided a bit of closure for all and gave us an opportunity to wish our graduates well as they begin their new adventures. Richard, Barbara, and all of the teachers were on hand to cheer for our 4s.
The end of an era: It was an especially emotional day for two families in particular. All 3 children in both families came through SAOTS Preschool and are now alumni. We will miss these two very special families.
Without the amazing and dedicated teachers of St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound Preschool, we wouldn’t have a loving, learning environment. Thank you to: Kristi Jarnagin (4s), Laura Craft (4s), Cathy Fisher (3s), Cornel Faddoul (3s), Tracy Hanson (2s), Catalina Monahan (1s and 2s), and Tami Buss (1s).
Please keep the preschool in your prayers as we navigate the ifs, when’s, and how’s of safely re-opening.
Blessings, Tracy Hanson, Preschool Director
