Welcome to a new year of the Lewis Community Spouses’ Club!

The LCSC is committed to developing friendships and raising funds to better the JBLM community. We have a packed year, here’s what’s in store:

Our monthly general membership meetings are open to all members. We wrap it around a themed lunch to encourage the social side of our club; if you only attend the meeting, you do not need to reserve and purchase a lunch. Aside from the club news and fun, we host a variety of vendors for shopping, education, and support other JBLM organi-zations. We try to pack in a lot in our two-hour window, to make it truly worth your while.

Raising money for our Community Grants fund is a tough task, but we tackle it together with a variety of (usually evening) events open to the public. This year, we are hosting a new fundraiser in November: Team Trivia Night. Much like the one at your favorite pub, LCSC will host an evening of teams competing in a trivia contest. Your team can be built of your smartest and funnest (new word!) friends determined to win the night. Plan to be there for a great time!

Sub Clubs and Shindigs are parts of the LCSC that are outside our meetings and fundraisers and are based sole-ly on your interests. Book lover? Join our book club! Looking to finally put together that scrapbook? Join our craft club! Yoga and beer lover? Watch out for our Pints & Poses Shindig. Need a new Tie Dye shirt for Fall? Attend our Tie Dye Shindig on September 15! Have a good idea that you think other members would want to be a part of? Let us know and we’ll help you develop it.

We are moving! And, in true Army form, we have NO idea when. Yes, we’ve packed up and unpacked. Waiting for our orders, graciously, patiently. But when we do move, it’ll be to a much larger space with a Lewis Lounge for our members, Wi-Fi, coffee, and 24/7 access! Want to help decorate (eventually)? Contact us through our website!

We are working hard to shape our club around doing good things together and for one another. Our life here at JBLM is a shared life. Our stories are shared stories. We don’t just want you to join, we want you to join us. What’s your story?

I cannot wait to meet you at one of our incredible functions. Please grab me and say “hi!”

Cookbook

Do you have a prize-winning pie recipe? A go-to appetizer? The best potato salad EVER? We are excited to share your favorite recipes in our cookbook this year!

We need your help creating the best cookbook to date. Help us spread the word as we finalize the last details. Be on the lookout for details on how to submit your favorite recipes, a unit competition, and how to order your cookbook.

Want to help plan the cookbook?

Snippets from “The Super Street Walker”Welcome to a new year for the Lewis Community Spouses’ Club! I am the 1st Vice President for the Club this year and my main roles are to be Hope’s right hand Superwoman and to fundraise. I have adopted the super power of Super Street Walker since I will be hitting the local streets in search of donations, sponsorships, and event venues.

The first fundraising endeavor for the Club is organizing and selling a Cookbook. We hope to receive MANY recipes from our members and we are encouraging a little friendly competition between the units. More in-formation below, with more details coming soon. If any of you are interest-ed in helping on the Cookbook Committee, please attend our meeting on Wednesday, September 10th at the American Lake Conference Center at the conclusion of the luncheon.

Mark your calendars for the club’s upcoming fundraising events: Team Triv-ia Night on November 21st, Tour of Homes on December 13th, and Wine & Cigar Tasting on March 21st. If you would like to help organize these events or help on the solicitation team, i.e. do a little “street walking” with me, then please contact me at [email protected].

The LCSC has 18 sub-clubs to enhance your membership. We may combine or adjust some groups to fit the interests of all of you. If you are interested in joining or coordinating a group, or if you have any ques-tions, please e-mail Amy Luekenga at [email protected]. Amy will add you to groups, give you information about our wonderful leaders, or direct you to a group that suits your needs. You may have many interests and we encourage you to enjoy as many groups as you have time, but ulti-mately, if you are crunched for time, the LCSC encourages you to at least join one group to designate as your quality time!

So how do you join a Sub-Club? First, you must be a member of the LCSC before you can participate in any of our clubs. After that, simply go to www.lewiscommunityspousesclub.com, click on the “Sign Up Here!” tab, and then click on Sub-Clubs. Fill out the form and indicate which clubs you want to join. The Sub-Club leaders will then contact you. Club updates will also be posted on our website, Facebook, and Soundings. Clubs meet at the Cottage, 4201 West Way, JBLM, unless otherwise noted.

Runners Club

We are a group that likes to GET OUT and MOVE. We are here to motivate each other on achieving our goals and to cheer each other on while doing so. So whether you already love to run or are interested in starting, like to run long

distance or only a few miles, NOW is the time to GET OUT and MOVE. The Running Club meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at Powderworks Park in DuPont. Starting Date is September 15th. We are stroller and dog friendly. Should you have questions, please contact Teresa at [email protected].

Bunco Group

Do you want to play a game? Do you need a couple of hours to socialize? Need a decision free way to release stress and relax? Come try your luck and roll some dice with the

Bunco Group. Bunco meets the last Tuesday of the month at the LCSC Cottage. As members of the group, we take turns hosting and everyone brings a dish to share. We eat promptly at 6 and start roll-ing dice at 6:30. Our starting date is September 30. Bring $5 to play. Should you have questions, please contact Joanne at [email protected].

The Book Club

This is NOT your Grandmother’s Book Club! No Home Cooking, Good House-keeping, or Better Homes & Gardens books. Each month we will have an exciting theme that will go along with the books we will read. As a member of the group you will have an opportunity to sign up as a host for each month and may decide to have the snacks, dress, and/or decorations match our theme. Our first meet-ing will be held on September 11 at the LCSC Cottage at 7 PM to discuss the the themes and the books for the year. Should you have questions, please contact Ashley at [email protected].

Cottage Boutique

Fall merchandise is in! Everything you see to the left is $8-35.

Visit the Cottage at 4201 West Way, Monday - Wednesday 10 am - 1 pm.

Other items include: furniture, unit totes, Christmas orna-ments, and baby clothes.

Games Spiel

Hooray! A Games Sub-Club of LCSC! I love to play games - Scrabble, Farkle, what-have-you - but I have a tough time finding the time AND enthusiastic players (my teens run screaming to their online gaming). If you like getting together occasionally with fun, enthusiastic, sometimes smack talking people, and competing in silly contests, then this club may be for YOU. Let’s meet up September 9th at 7 PM at the LCSC Cottage for a friendly game of Scrabble or UNO (depending on the number of people coming), figure out the whosy-whats of the Club, and get ready to RUUM-MMMBBBBLLLLEEEE! RSVP please at [email protected] so I know how many to prepare snacks for! The Crafting Club

Do you spend too much time at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, or Arts and Crafts festivals? Do you admire those that make different crafts and wonder how they do it? Then this is the group for you! The vision for this group is share our crafts, learn about others, and inspire and encourage each other in this process. Everyone is welcome, no matter what their experience level is or the type of craft they are working on. Our desire is to plan and attend classes, have “bring what you are working on sessions,” and maybe go on a field trip or two. There will also be a Facebook group for members only that you will be invited to join to share, learn, and inspire, even if you miss a meeting. Please join us on Monday, September 22 from 10 to 1 (may not be that long) at the LCSC Cottage to help generate ideas for our group this year. Should you have further questions, please contact Shelly at [email protected].

Shopping Small with Kimberlee & FriendsBy Kimberlee Cavin

For those of you who don’t know me yet, my favorite time is spent in a store, and not just any store, but a small, locally owned store. I don’t know what I love most about shopping local - it could be the store owner’s passion for their store, the history of the building, or just knowing that you have found a place no one else knows about. Shopping small brings passion back into the relationships of shopping and I have made a lot of forever friendships forged at the stores I have visited.

Throughout the year, I will be ex-ploring different areas of the Pacific Northwest and bringing you news, reviews, and stories of stores that are locally owned and operated, both new and old.

This month I explored Olympia, our state capitol. I have been going to the Olympia Farmers Market since I moved here, but had yet to explore downtown. My awesome friend Hope and I decided to spend an afternoon there and we found some great places that you’ll love!

Originally, my intent was to go downtown and find new stores, we couldn’t pass up a trip to the Olympia Farmers Market. We picked up salsa

from Salsa So Fresh (Hope loves the Olive Salsa) and spoke to my favor-ite floral stand, Lynch Creek Farm (they have the most beautiful floral arrangements for $5-10).

We then walked over to Batdorf & Bonson Coffee Roasters tasting room. While there, sample their

coffees from Kenya, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Mexico. In addition to tasting, they offer classes, details can be found on their Facebook page. You can also drink their coffee at The Dancing Goats Coffee Bar located in Olympia and Lacey. We then walked over to Vivala (across from the market). It’s a nice women’s boutique with casual clothing, sportswear, and gift items. For those interested, they offer an after-hours ladies shopping experi-ence as well.

We jumped in our car and headed downtown to Capitol Way. Hope and I went to a lot of stores, and I wish I could tell you about all of them, but I don’t think I have the space, so I’ll tell you the ones I loved the most.

My favorite boutique of the day (and so far in this area) is Drees. We met owner Ruth-Ann, who absolutely loves military spouses.

She was ecstatic to help and of-fered her store for functions or just a place to serve hors’ duerves while

shopping. Her hospitality bordered on “Southern!” Drees offers gifts, home furnishing, décor, and stationary, and will be my go-to for most gift gifting and house decorat-ing needs.

Compass Rose was another store for your home with unique items you won’t find anywhere else. This is the perfect store to take out-of-town visitors, they will enjoy look-ing at all the items! I was so happy with all their fun kitchen gadgets that I didn’t look at everything. Oops!!!

Hot Toddy was Hope’s favorite find of the day. It’s a cute clothing store with a totally vintage vibe. With a new fall lineup scheduled to arrive any day now, Hot Toddy has a great selection of clothes ranging up to size 18. I bought a dress there that will definitely be making a lun-cheon appearance!

Shopping with Kimberlee

We spent most of our time at Archibald Sisters. While they are known for their personal care essentials and perfumes, we focused all our attention on their massive gift selection. Horsehead squirrel feeders, bacon toothpaste, sock monkeys, bigfoot air fresh-eners, cat lady action figures, this store truly offers everything for the young (and funky) at heart!

A few others stores worth honor-able mention: The Painted Plate and Olympia Olive Oil, both offering their facilities for socials/coffees. Red Door Interiors, for all your decorating needs, and Matter Gallery, for a great selection of local artists’ wares, are all places to go look at as well.

With so much to explore, we didn’t even come close to tapping into all Olympia has to offer, which just means much more to come!

Next month is all about FALL Y’ALL!!!!

Have a question for Kimberlee?Know a store that she must go to? Just send Kimberlee an email at [email protected].

BUT FIRST...LET ME TAKE A

SELFIE!

(Yep, that’s our Soundings Editor Jessica selfie-ing it up with Rhubarb at a Rainiers Game with our board this summer.)

We love selfies just as much as you - and we want to see them and share them!

Whether you’re at a luncheon, fundraiser, sub-club, or shindig, take a selfie and send it to our Gwyn, our resident paparazzo aka LCSC Historian at [email protected].

Your selfie may just end up in the end-of-year scrapbook!

Also, be on the lookout for the hashtag for each event - post along with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Once upon a time under the shad-ow of Mount Rainier there was an event called Super Sign Up. It was hosted by the Lewis Community Spouses’ Club (LCSC) as a gather-ing of community members, local agencies, and independent vendors. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in August, the masses gathered at the historic Family Resource Center (FRC).

The FRC is a lovely green and white building constructed in 1917 by the American Red Cross. This building was once a recreational facility for convalescing soldiers at the original Camp Lewis. It provided a lounge, library, kitchen, and accommoda-tions for relatives. Today, it hosts events for FRGs and units alike, and it served as the starting point for the LCSC 2014 -2015 journey and the beginning of our story.

SUPER SIGN UP - WHAT’S YOUR STORY?

Every year the LCSC picks a theme for the year. The board was asked to share and develop our super powers that lie in wait to be used to assist the good things in our community. Our board members have utilized great creativity in either picking existing super heroes to exemplify their powers or they have made up their own super hero image that matches their personality. Others have matched their hero status to the job they are performing on the board. As a club we want to develop and bring out your super powers and like Clark Kent we are asking the question, “What’s your story?”

We would not have a story if we did not have sponsors and orga-nizations that support the LCSC over the year. Please support these businesses as they make our lives more enriched.

USAA was our sponsor for the Su-per Sign Up and were sad that they were not able to join us. Please remember to thank them the next time you see them.

Costco contributed to our event by providing freshly baked cookies and muffins from their bakery de-partment in Lacey. Jerome Comrie and his sidekick, Nathan, were representing Costco and talking about membership, credit cards, and other store benefits.

America’s Credit Union (ACU) has always been a strong supporter of LCSC and provided our lunch for the LCSC Team Building board meeting in June.

Dhane Orthodontics in Dupont must not be overlooked as they were our sponsor for last year’s Holiday Bazaar.

The Membership Table was led by Mrs. Incredible, Terri Wallace. Many new members signed up via computer and paper, checks and credit cards. No matter how you wanted to sign up - it was available! Make sure to tell your friends to sign up on our website today.

T’Neisha Gonzales was on hand to take reservations for our luncheons and club events. This year the LCSC is offering the 200 Club. Pre-pay and register for all of this year’s events for $200. As a bonus you get a complimentary date ticket for our Sweetheart Dinner in February. This op-portunity will be available at the Welcome Back Bunco, so stop by the reservation table and see if this is for you.

Ann Reiter and Lisa Moore are our lovely Volunteer Coordinators! Please consider volunteering your time to assist with one of our fund-raising events or helping on a com-mittee. Thanks to all of you who signed up to be volunteers in some capacity. It is a great way meet new people, express your hidden talents, and make the community better through team work. Plus, as a bo-nus and incentive for you, volunteer and record 10 hours in VMIS and you will receive a free luncheon.

Thank you to our Treasurers Danielle L’heureux and Amy Haynes for keeping track of all our money and keeping us on track. You make sure that events are budgeted and members’ money is put where it is supposed to be.

Eleecia Hood proved us all with her all-American Super Power decorations.

Michelle O’Connor, Ways and Means, had a great array of items from the LCSC Cottage. These items make great military gifts or

serve as wonderful mementos from JBLM.Thank you to the sub-club leaders and members (Shelly Hinzman, Ashley Bresnahan, Trish Prier, Hope Corizzo, Jessica Hall, and Megan O’Donnell) that were generous enough to represent the groups and inspire members to take a chance on giving a little time for themselves. Learn more about our clubs on page 4.

The next time you see Don-naThiele, Ven-dor Liaison, please recognize her efforts for arranging all the wonderful vendors that you shopped at during Super Sign Up. There was a wide variety of large and small companies and

non-profit organizations in one place. The vendors on hand were: Deanna Mazzullo, Sunshower and Sugar Co.; Chandra Hedgepeth and Kim Wilson Estepa,Rodan and Fields Dermatologists; Andrew Ferguson, Scentsy; Don-na Thiele, Pampered Chef; Carol

Pisano, Thrive Life; Michelle Cunningham, Thirty-One Gifts; Mandi Stachour, Us-borne Books & More; Laura Leigh Ritter, Nomades; Sarah Frausto, Origami Owl; Trish Brown, Madigan Health Services Auxiliary; Carla Bullimore, Fort Lewis Thrift Shop; Stephanie Blackadar and Daniela Contreras, Girl Scout Troop 40132.

Hopefully you enjoyed the day and had the opportunity to meet some new people. Congratulations to all our winners who took home a gift certificate to the Cottage Boutique or our vendors!

Looking forward to hearing your story in the coming year!
