Dr. Phillip Spears Lee Lagaska AKA “Bravo” San Antonio, Texas Jacksonville, Florida
CONGRATULATIONS to San-Jitsu’s Texas Representative, Sensei
Phillip Spears for securing his Doctorate Degree from Capella
University on August 10th
in Minnesota! Phillip as we noted in an earlier
newsletter owns one of the top 10 collection agencies in the U.S.
according to Forbes Magazine. You can watch the commencement at
www.capella.edu/watchcommencement by clicking on the start button
of the 2013 Commencement – Minneapolis 2013 video located there. On
August 28th, we also received a surprise visit at the Jacksonville Hombu
from former San-Jitsu alumni, Lee Lagaska who is now a professional
wrestler on the Southeast professional wrestling circuit. He wrestles as a
“bad guy” or “heel” under the name of “Bravo” & had just returned
from a wrestling bout in Tennessee where he was attacked after the
show by an over zealous fan. He used San-Jitsu’s “Dragon’s Tail
Throw” to subdue the man. He credits San-Jitsu with helping him deal
with that altercation and for helping his fast rise in the wrestling circuit.
August 10th
, I was in Omaha, Nebraska for a surprise party given by
Sensei Val Retelsdorf for good friend, Grandmaster John Byrne of the 5
Circle System. The Hall was filled with students, past and present who
came to honor Grandmaster Byrne for his years of dedication to
teaching the martial arts.

Induction notice from International Martial Arts Times Magazine for
“Supreme Grandmaster of the Year 2013”. Although I don’t consider
myself a “Supreme Grandmaster” (a rather pretentious title at 65 yrs
“young”), I was none-the-less honored and humbled by the nomination.

On September 28th
, I was in Sacramento, California doing a San-Jitsu
seminar for the “2013 The Gathering” sponsored by Hanshi Bruce
Juchnik’s “Martial Arts Collective Society”. The event was dedicated to
my good friend, the late GM Mike Young of Hawaii. While there, I also
had time to visit with friends, GM Michael DeAlba, Master Nelson
Pinto, Shihan Jeff Driscoll, Sensei Hanns Ingebretsen, Master Miguel
Jurna, Master Miguel Smith, GM Rudy & Adele Tuiolosega & others
who were at the event.

The following day on September 29th
, I was in Bakersfield, Thanks to
my student, Sensei Ray Kodani who drove me there, to visit with my
Judo Sensei, Yasutoshi “Moon” Watanabe and his daughter, Donna
Escobar. Sensei Moon is an unusually skilled Judoka & one of my very
first martial arts “Fathers”. According to my good friend, the late
Professor Wally Jay, when Moon trained in Hawaii, the guys who were
showing off to their girlfriends would clear the mat and go home. He
also threw the great Kimura one time in friendly competition & was
also the instructor for Wally’s Wife, Bernice before he married her. I
was truly blessed to have studied Judo from this man and it was great to
see that he still looks as powerful as ever!

For my students who would like to do limb conditioning at home
(essential for powerful strikes). You can do the following:
Remember that your progress in San-Jitsu depends on YOU. You are
only in competition with yourself, so the only limits you have are those
that you impose on yourself. As the old Bruce Lee saying goes, “be like
water” and when faced with a problem, if you can’t go through it, try to
go over, under or around it. Also from the Nike commercial, comes the
greatest piece of American Zen I have ever heard…..”Just Do It”!
Don’t attempt to over analyze things and don’t doubt yourself, “just do
it”!
Until next time, remember to stay strong and practice hard as always!
Grandmaster Frank E. Sanchez
Founder/ Chief Instructor
