MD-H Chapter Meeting – 4th Sunday at Golden Corral, 706 S. Philadelphia Blvd., Aberdeen, MD
Breakfast at 0800; Meeting at 0900
By the time this newsletter is posted the year will be officially halfway over! Which also means that the riding
season is well under way so hopefully this means that many of you were able to take advantage of the great
weather during the month of June to get in some FUN rides.
Shane and I took some time this month to get away, decompress from our work jobs as well as taking a very
short break from our chapter duties. I have to say that it was really great to re-energize ourselves and that it was a
much needed break. Thanks to our friends for inviting us along with them – it was an awesome trip!
This month at our Chapter Gathering we had the pleasure of having Ms. Tara Lathrop, Harford County
Department of Community Services, Office of Drug Control Policy, provide our members and our guests to a
“Drug Awareness” presentation. For those who weren’t able to attend our Gathering and hear her presentation,
you missed a lot of great information. Thanks go to Ms. Lathrop for taking personal time out of her schedule to
come provide us with loads of information.
.
We also wanted to remind you that we will need your support to have a successful “Christmas in July” for
our Perry Point Veterans. You’ll find the list of much needed items later in our newsletter, it was also in our
June issue. Do keep in mind that of the hygienic items are to contain alcohol (read the labels please) and
absolutely no camouflage clothing! If you have already purchased items for this event and won’t be able to
participate in the drop-off, feel free to give me a call and we will make arrangements to pick up your
contributions. We will be dropping off all chapter contributions the morning of 21 July; 2-, 3-, and 4-wheels are
needed for this event. Those who plan to participate, please be at our place by 8:45am so we can load up the
bikes and trailers with the chapter donations. Shane will lead us on a short ride to the Perry Point VA, we’ll do
our donation drop-off at 10am, then conclude the event with a ride to lunch somewhere. We hope as many of
you as possible will be able to join us in this endeavor.
We will also be making “Thank You for Your Service” cards during the next few weeks so that we can
personally hand them out to the Veterans after our July Chapter Gathering, so stay tuned for more details (watch
for those emails!).
For those 12 members who signed up for the CPR/Medic 1st Aid class, if you haven’t paid the $30 fee for
the class, please have it for me at our July Chapter Gathering (23 July). It can be cash or check; if check, make
it payable to Maryland District. Julie Ahearn will be providing this training at our home on 12 August, from
10am to 2pm. So don’t forget to mark your calendar!
Last but not least, remember to mark your calendar with our ‘Upcoming July Activities’! Chapter H needs
YOUR SUPPORT to make our all our events (riding, training, charity) successful and FUN! Also mark your
calendar for the ‘Save the Dates’ events. Looking forward to seeing y’all at our upcoming events!

Ice Cream social at Nottingham Creamery
Our ice cream ride in June was to Nottingham Creamery in PA. It was a small crowd but
great ice cream as usual. Shane led a Covered Bridge Ride in PA on June 24 and then we rode
to Shady Maple for lunch. After our gathering Shane again led a ride for ice cream. At our
gathering Judy presented Oscar with a certificate and cash prize that he won way back at
WinterThing for having the 3rd highest mileage in Maryland District last year. Lillian Cruz,
District Couple of the Year Coordinator, attended the gathering to present our Couple of the
Year, Chris and Marge Nagel, with their medallions.
See flyer later in newsletter for a ride to benefit Wounded Warriors, Sat. July 8. KSU at noon
sharp. Pre-registration $20 driver. Day of the ride $25. 2nd rider is $10. Price includes a
chicken dinner, baked beans, salads and dessert.
Here are some photos of the presentations at the gathering.

Greetings from our Rider Educator
Rodney Malone – Ride Prepared, Be Safe
and Have Fun!
We love to ride our bikes because we probably all have a little of that rebellious streak in us. But at the same time we do not
want to be a victim of a motorcycle accident. As with new cars having new braking systems, motorcycle manufacturers have
been working on perfecting motorcycle safety features. Here are some of the biggest innovations in motorcycle safety, along
with a few hints of what’s to come.
AIRBAGS
Honda was the first to introduce a motorcycle airbag system in 2006. Motorcycle airbags haven’t really caught on, though —
the Honda Gold Wing is still the lone production bike with such a system, and it only protects against head-on collisions. Most
of the innovations in this area seem to have come from makers of suits, jackets, and helmets, rather than the bike
manufacturers themselves. The first airbag suit to hit the market was from Japanese manufacturer in 2008, followed soon
after by their airbag jacket. Both items attach to the bike with a wire, and when the wire becomes detached, airbags in the
neck inflate to help stabilize the bones in the neck.
There was some concern about riders forgetting to unhook the tether, however, causing an accidental deployment. Italian
apparel company Dainese solved this problem with their “wireless” D-Air® suit, the first system that doesn’t require a physical
connection to the bike. The D-Air, which was made available to consumers in 2011, uses sensors and special algorithms to
detect crash conditions. It takes about 45 milliseconds to deploy.
HIGH-TECH HELMETS
Helmet manufacturers have also been experimenting with airbags. Barcelona-based APC Systems brought the first airbag
helmet to market in 2008. Their design used speed sensors to determine when a crash was imminent, which inflated an
airbag that protected the rider’s neck and upper spine. A Swedish company has also come up with an invisible inflatable
helmet which deploys from a collar worn around the neck. This technology is currently just for bikes but motorcycle
manufacturers could come up with their own version. There is also something called a Thermahelm. This is a brain cooling
helmet that contains a chemical packet that activates in the event of a crash, creating a reaction the cools the rider’s head to
help reduce brain swelling. INTELLIGENT LIGHTS
All headlights illuminate in front of you but adaptive lights show you what’s around the next bend. In 2008 BMW offered
adaptive headlights that tilt according to the bike’s lean angle. Brake lights are a special concern on motorcycles. Since bikes
decelerate much faster than cars or trucks, riders sometimes don’t use their brakes to slow down. That means the vehicle
behind the bike may not get any warning that the bike is losing speed. This safety feature called Vololights which can be
installed on your motorcycle automatically light up when the motorcycle slows down — whether the rider is applying the
brakes or not and flashes at different rates communicating to the driver behind you to let that driver know that you are
slowing down.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
BMW was the first to pioneer ABS for motorcycles in 1988, and in 2010, Bosch announced the world’s first ABS designed
specifically for motorcycles. This braking system should be a requirement on all new motorcyles as it has been shown that
ABS can reduce the rate of fatal motorcycle collisions by around 31 percent. We all enjoy riding our bikes and we want to
be as safe as possible. Just as they are perfecting innovations for new cars, motorcycle manufacturers should be
offering new innovations to make riding safer. While new cars and trucks increasingly are incorporating new technology
such as sensors and alert notifications that they are approaching too closely to the vehicle in front of them, motorcycle
riders have not yet benefited from this new innovation. Riders must maintain alert status at all times for their own
safety. ((The above article was taken from a blog on motorcycle innovations.))

Visited Wisconsin Chapter H With the ladies from TN-V at Henry Ford Museum
It’s always nice to hear someone say to you “Nice Bike”, but this time it turned into a GWRRA Chapter visit. We had
just walked into the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan, when two ladies walked up to us and mentioned the bikes.
We started talking and soon found out that these two ladies also had Goldwings and were with GWRRA Tennessee Chapter V
– The Choo-Choo Wings – get it – Choo-Choo – Tennessee – ha!
The two ladies were Robin Smith and Corliss Cooper – Coop, as she preferred to be called. Coop had a Goldwing Trike
but was selling it to Robin as she really wanted two wheels again and had just gotten a 2012 (I believe) Goldwing. Both of
these ladies have only been with GWRRA for about a year – and as most of us know – once you are in, you get a position.
Coop is the treasurer and Robin has miscellaneous duties - such as visitation, mileage.
We decided that we would have a chapter visit right there in the corner of the Henry Ford Museum. We swapped
visitation cards, talked about our chapters, rides, and even had a 50/50 to make it an official visit. Fran Haslup was kind
enough to pull whatever change she had in her pocket (which was 53 cents), I asked Coop to pick a number and she won!
It was great to meet and talk with members from another GWRRA chapter and told them if they are ever in Maryland
to make sure they give us a call and we will do the same if we make it to Tennessee.
A couple days after that we arrived in Madison, Wisconsin. Approximately 30 minutes out of Madison is a little town
called Arena in which Wisconsin Chapter H meets. We had contacted the Chapter Director, Marcella Newell, before we left
on the trip to make sure that they were still having their monthly meeting and told them we would be stopping by for their
gathering. What a great group of people!! Everyone made us feel so welcomed and the food was good too! Marcella, who
likes to be called Mark, has been riding for years and loves the twisties. I was a little concern that Chris got a little glow in his
eyes – lol. A lot of members in this chapter have given up their bikes, mostly due to health reasons, but they are still actively
involved and are keeping that chapter alive – it was great to see.
This is one of the FUN parts of GWRRA, visiting different chapters. It’s always nice to visit your home state chapters,
but when you get a chance to visit other state’s chapters and meet some wonderful people who also have that love of riding
– it doesn’t get any better than that! That’s FUN!!!
‘Nice Bike’ said the ladies and then we
had a chapter meeting….
Chapter Members Volunteer for Komen Promise Ride
Covered Bridge Ride in PA followed by lunch at Shady Maple
Gold, Wing and Wingster heard that some of
our Chapter members went on an exciting bike
trip so they flew the coop to Welcome them
home. Wonder where they landed????
Early on Saturday, June 24, Fran & Mike rode down to Edgewater
MD to support the Susan G. Komen Promise Ride, a bicycle ride
along a beautiful route. Originally they were going to offer
motorcycle support along with Barbie and Glenda, but the day
started out rainy, so Fran and Mike went in the car. They ended up
helping at a snack and water stop, but saw other motorcycles out
from Chapter C.
Thanks to Fran & Mike for their support. Look for more information
on this opportunity next year.
