July & August 2017 VIA Newsletter From The VIA President Cory H Schroeder appy sizzling summer to all! I hope each of you is enjoy- ing the break doing the things you love to do. Some of us are fitting fun in between a more relaxed schedule of meetings to keep the momentum going as well as plan for the coming year. It's all good! We all definitely deserve a break from the busyness of May and June. Speaking of the coming VIA activities, even before our official year begins, we have at least two important dates: On Septem- ber 13, we have the JLMH fundraiser, a night at Town & Country Players to see 25 th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, orga- nized by Mary Jane Mims. And on Sunday, September 24, we will host our first Family Game Night, a fundraiser for the VIA, chaired by Georgia Ford. Both events are described within, with registration forms available. Volunteers are needed for the Game Night. Your support for both is encouraged, as each should be great fun. On a more serious note, I am sorry to inform you that our 2nd Vice President, Mary Jane Mims has stepped down from her po- sition. Also resigning from the Board is Appointed Member Maureen Casey. Both have cited personal reasons. Mary Jane, a diligent worker, will continue to fulfill the responsibilities of the position until a replacement can be found. I thank them both for their service. The Nominating Committee has been tasked with finding someone to complete this year, as well as a new candi- date for the position in June 2018. If you are interested, or know of a VIA member who is interested, please let me know. We will keep you updated on the progress. Updates: Congratulations to the Veterans Committee who con- tinue to spread donations in the community and receive public- ity for their efforts. And Home Life had a very successful tea at Pine Run last month. Bylaws and Governance continue to make strides with our Policies and Articles of Incorporation, with spe- cial thanks to Joyce Hanson for all her hard work to develop the Articles for review. Letters to the VIA Thank you so much for awarding me the Ruth Boland Memorial Scholarship. Seeing so many, beautiful women who are still nurses or are re-tired makes me so proud of my decision to be-come a nurse. There are so many exciting pro-jects and renovations going on with Doylestown Health. I hope one day to work in my home town and the place I was born. Thank you so much for the wonderful luncheon and friendship. I will most certainly keep in touch with you all and it was a very memorable moment that I will cherish forever!

Thanks again! Aaron Wasser

---------------------------------------------------------------- The Board and staff of Child, Home and Commu-nity thank you and the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown for your grant of $4,000.00 for fiscal year 2017. Your support will allow us to continue to provide tablets that will allow our instructors in the Doylestown area to more easily read client information and provide real-time educational support.

Young parents are at greater risk of giving birth to babies prematurely, neglecting or abusing their children, dropping out of school, and be-coming dependent on public assistance. The Village Improvement Association is helping to break that cycle!

Thank you for partnering with us. CHC is truly grateful for your support!

Sincerely, Roe DeLuca

Development Director Note per Steven T. Boell, President CHC Board of Directors: Effective July 1, 2017, CHC will be merging with Maternity Care Coalition allowing CHC to expand its geographic reach of services across the Metro-Philadelphia region. ---------------------------------------------------------------- On behalf of the Board, staff, participants, and volunteers at Special Equestrians, I would like to thank the Community Response Fund of the Village Improvement Association for the gener-ous donation of $1,140 in support of our Neigh-borly Visits program.

We are very excited about visiting Pine Run Health Center again and offering residents a con-nection with horses. We believe in the life-chang-ing power of equine-assisted activities, and we are committed to making our programs accessi-ble to anyone who might benefit from them. Funding from the Community Response Fund as-sists us in meeting our goals, ensuring our ability to continue to provide therapeutic equine-assisted Neigh-borly Visits.

Our horses and staff would love to have members of your committee come by during our Neigh-borly Visits sessions. I will advise you of the dates as soon as we have a schedule.

From the VIA President Continued from pg. 1 The 125th Anniversary Committee is gearing up with ideas to celebrate our heritage in 2020. Spe-cial thanks to our Sunshine lady, Bette Schmidt, who is ready with greeting, get well, and sympa-thy cards for our members. Fundraising has some fun ideas to interest you, not the least of

which is the aforementioned Game Night, open to the public, as well as a fashion day at Talbots. And the Board has approved several new VIA logos to show you in the fall.

The Board will be meeting in July but will take August off. Joan Parlee will also cancel the Au-gust Hospital Board meeting. Both will resume in September. This issue of the newsletter is a com-bined July and August missive, and we will re-sume our normal schedule in September.

I hope you all enjoy every minute of the remain-ing time until we meet again. Our October meet-ing should be a great time for all. Sheri Putnam, in her wonderful personal style, will be giving us a humorous view of medicine with anecdotes from our own Doylestown Health. This will be a great 'welcome back' for all, keeping us 'in stitch-es'!

See you then, if not before!

VIA Health System Report Joan Parlee, Chairman of the Boards

In June the Doylestown Hospital and Foundation Boards hosted the annual public meeting. Jim Brexler, Sheri Putnam, and Dan Upton presented the progress of Doylestown Health as a value-based organization through transformation of the delivery system, management of a popula-tion of patients and the development of relation-ships.

The object is to provide high-quality, low-cost care. Positive financial results are expected but it takes 18-24 months for the returns on the con-tracts to be realized. Doylestown Health is al-ready managing 44,000 lives through its various arrangements. We have invested about $8M into the infrastructure and organizational sup-port.

During the next fiscal year, a series of work teams will work toward financial efficiency and quality outcomes in order to produce a minimum

of $4M return. Doylestown Health will also strive to become a destination for complex case referrals. It is important to keep patients in our current geographic area receiving their care at Doylestown Health, as well as stretching into ad-jacent communities to become their referral health system. Doylestown Hospital must be seen as the provider of high quality, high tech services at a better cost.

The public meeting was followed by a regular Doylestown Hospital Board meeting. The finan-cial results show a year-to-date operating gain of $2.2M, $2M unfavorable to the prior year. Inpa-tient discharges are 1.5% above 2016 and surgi-cal volumes are close to 2016. Inpatient surgical cases are 9.6% above 2016. Year-to-date net pa-tient revenue is $225.4M, an increase of $9.5M over last year. Expenses are 5% over last year. Funded depreciation and Foundation invest-ments are up $7.6M/9.1%. Revenues are over expenses by $1.17M.

The Clinical Quality Report focuses on two areas. The first quarter of 2017 showed the percentage of Elective Deliveries at 37-39 weeks gestation is down to zero. Also for stroke victims, the first medical contact to balloon placement in 90 minutes is 100% for the first quarter of 2017. There is a new protocol for use of anti-coagu-lants for surgery patients. Current data suggests it is riskier to stop aspirin preventive measures than to continue them prior to surgery.

The Patient Safety Culture Survey showed posi-tive trends in each category. Three cases where problems came up were reviewed and appropri-ate actions were taken. The Sleep Center is now included on Environmental Safety Rounds and annual licensure and life safety surveys of the Surgery Center showed good results.

There were three new physicians approved for active staff privileges, one in the Department of Medicine/Cardiology and two in the Department of Medicine/Internal Medicine. Three physicians were also approved for a change in status to Ac-tive Staff, one Hospitalist, one Emergency De-partment physician and one with Doylestown Radiology Associates. The three Allied Health Practitioners approved are with the Richard A.

Reif Heart Institute. Dr. Marchant has com-pleted his tenure as President of the Medical Staff. As part of his legacy, he is proud of the new service line model of the Medical Executive Com-mittee. Dr. Pelletier will now assume the role of President, the very first woman in this role!

We are so proud of our administration and phy-sicians. Jim Brexler made a presentation about our Leapfrog turnaround to the Greater Philadel-phia Business Coalition on Health. Board mem-ber, Pat Counihan, was in the audience. He sent me a wonderful letter praising Jim’s “relevant content” and “excellent delivery”. Congratula-tions to Jim and thank you to Pat for sharing!

Special Note:

Dr. Mary Ellen Pelletier has been elected president of the Doylestown Hospital medical staff. She's the first woman in that role. Originally a member of the medical staff in private practice, she joined Doylestown Hospital as a hos-pitalist when the program be-

gan. Beginning in 2008, she helped lead the tran-sition from paper to electronic medical records and was the first physician at Doylestown Hospi-tal to admit a patient through a new computer-ized system. She was also, for a time, the lead hospitalist. She is a member of the Doylestown Healthcare Partnership, the American Medical Association and the Pennsylvania Medical Soci-ety.

Doylestown Health Announces Heart Institute Campaign Leadership Richard T. and Angela Clark will serve as cam-paign chairs of Doylestown Health's upcoming comprehensive campaign; Dick served as Merck CEO 2005 – 2011. Alex and Patricia Gorsky will serve as honorary chairs; Alex is CEO of Johnson & Johnson since 2012 and Pat is a Doylestown Hospital Board Member.

"We are deeply grateful the Gorskys and the Clarks have agreed to serve as leaders of our upcoming campaign," stated Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer for Doylestown Health.

1895 Society Jean Upton

The VIA Board of Directors has approved the fol-lowing changes to the 1895 Society policies be-ginning in July 2017:

The plaque for donor recognition will be retired and replaced with a new Annual Giving Report to be published after the end of each fiscal year. All donations to the VIA will be recognized. Previ-ously, only donations given to the Unrestricted Fund, James-Lorah Memorial Home, Community Outreach, Welfare and Women’s Scholarship were recognized. This change will allow us to ex-pand our recognition to additional donation ar-eas, including the VIA general fund and the Vet-eran’s Committee. In addition, the adoption of an Annual Giving Report will allow us to distrib-ute the information more widely, for example, on our VIA site and other potential opportuni-ties.

Going forward, an additional change is the for-mation of a VIA Legacy League to recognize members who include a donation to the VIA in their wills. The Cornerstone Society will continue to recognize those who include Doylestown Hos-pital in their estate planning

Community Response

Marilyn Mele

The Community Response Fund Committee has awarded six grants in 2017 to Bucks County or-ganizations that enhance the quality of life in our community. Grants were given to:

Rolling Harvest which collects produce from farmers and delivers it to food banks and shel-ters. The $3,500 grant will support the pur-chase of a refrigerated truck.

Special Equestrians received $1,140 for their Neigh-borly Visits program which will bring horses to visit Pine Run Health Center resi-dents.

Boy Scout Post 125 was awarded $1,995 to purchase CPR equipment for training future EMT volunteers.

Child, Home and Community, an organization that deals with young mothers and families to

help them meet the challenges of parenthood, received $4,000 to buy laptops for use in home visits.

“I Can Shine Bike Camp” holds a camp at Del Val University in August that teaches disabled children how to ride a bike along with other camp activities. The $2,000 award will be used for scholarships.

The Parade Committee of Doylestown Boro was awarded $2,000 to have commemorative tiles made by the Mercer Tile Works. The tiles will commemorate the Sesquicentennial of Doylestown. The tiles will be sold throughout the year to raise money for veteran organiza-tions in Doylestown.

This year’s awards benefit a wide range of organ-izations with varying projects that the VIA was happy and proud to help with financial aid.

2018 Designer House Kathy Krick

The 2018 house search is underway! Thanks to everyone who has volunteered for committee positions and I ask that anyone who would like to be part of the committee email me at [email protected]. Please include the committees you would like to join and/or chair. We are in special need of a party person - an or-ganized person who wants to throw the party of the season – the Preview Gala. Both the band and the caterer from 2017 have agreed to next year, so our chair and her committee will be able to focus on selecting the menu and decor! Past committee chairs will lend support and guid-ance.

The first meeting of the 2018 committee will be held on September 12 at 9:30 am in conference room C at the hospital. Please join the Designer House Committee, the largest fundraising effort of the VIA.

2017 Designer House

Barbara Ann Price

A 2017 Designer House debrief meeting was held

in June. Each committee chair was asked to pre-

sent three things that went well and three things

that we could improve for next year’s Designer

House. We established a new Advisory Commit-

tee to help transfer knowledge from the Past De-

signer House Chairs to 2018 Chair and co-chair.

Financial results should be finalized soon.

Fundraising Cory H. Schroeder

We have a number of fun things planned! Even before our official year starts, we will be hosting our first Family Game Night, an evening out for couples, parents, and grandparents with the kids. Thanks to Georgia Ford who is leading the event and to Pam Good and Louise Woodruff for support from the Conservation Committee. We will have games on hand, as well as light refresh-ments and numerous raffle items. Advance reg-istration is required. Look for the promo and reg-istration form on page 11.

Once again, we will be present at the Doylestown Arts Festival on Sunday only, Sept 10, sharing space through the generosity of Doylestown Health. Though not a fundraising event, we will be sharing membership infor-mation and JLMH coloring books and crayons.

Phyllis Morris and Carolyn Kozakowski are co-chairing a special Shopping Day at Talbots, just in time for the holidays. Date and details are being discussed.

Volunteers needed:

Family Game Event: Desserts needed (e.g. Brownies, cookies and other finger food desserts).

Arts Festival: to man shifts at the booth. Mothers and daughters from National Charity League, su-pervised by Chris Thompson, will assist.

Home Life Committee Kathryn Lambert

An annual tea was held for residents of the Pine Run Health Center on June 22. Entertainment

was provided by harpist Brenda Hart, a certified therapeutic recreational therapist who performs at Pine Run Health Center three times per month.

Home Life Committee members poured flavorful teas and served tea sandwiches and small cakes as refreshments. The tea is a yearly event that is eagerly looked forward to by all.

Administrative - FY 2018 Budget

The budget was reviewed and finalized in June. It includes the operating and capital expenses; the latter being prioritized. Additional projects are being identified (see House Preservation Work) and will also be prioritized.

Security Upgrade – Holicong Security

The upgraded security and video surveillance system will be installed starting August 1 and fin-ished within one week. New security codes have been assigned to designated personnel. For ac-cess to the house, members should continue to contact Barb Darr to make arrangements.

House Preservation Work

Interior water damage in the living, dining and music rooms is being evaluated and estimates from Andy Happ and Mark Craig (painter) will be submitted. Cost estimates for fixing the wall cracks on the 3rd-floor landing and the hole in the ceiling in the book room are also being pre-pared. The restrooms on the second floor have been out of order for several years. Plumbing es-timates are being obtained for installation of new toilets. Priority for all this work will be set and work scheduled as the 2018 budget allows.

House Events 2017-18

September 13: Tickets for the Town & Country Theater fundraiser can be purchased on the VIA website via a PayPal button.

December 10: Fonthill-JLMH tours. The sub-com-mittee is in place with tasks identified.

Book Collection

Following the June 27 Board meeting, the sale of any of the book collection was tabled. This was a result of the Medical books being evaluated by a private collector who had reviewed them on June 24. He was notified of the Board's decision to defer any sales indefinitely. In reply, he of-fered his observations regarding Dr. James’ col-lection and his medical practice in the 19th cen-tury. The Medical books may be more valuable than the current appraisal; the committee will pursue further appraisals for insurance pur-poses. Fireproof storage and paper conservation are being explored to protect and preserve the collection. This new information opens an ave-nue to research and publicize Dr. James and his medical and political contributions to the Doylestown community. This initiative could en-hance the history of the house.

The Chair and Property Management and History & Antiques committees will pursue adequate protection of the collection.

VIA in the news! The marketing team wants to hear from you! Please notify the marketing team when there is an event, donation, or participa-tion of any kind so that news articles can be writ-ten. In order to share the VIA mission and cur-rent happenings with the community, we need to know about your committee activities and what you do for and with the community. Our best practice recommendation is to contact Mar-keting once an event is scheduled so that it can be added to the VIA calendar and included in Marketing efforts!

We have exciting news for you – we’ve entered the digital age! Members can now pay their an-nual dues and for other events such as luncheons directly through our website via PayPal! Please take the time to check out the website with these new features located in the Membership Information section. Of course, you are still welcome to pay by check. As we continue to work on shifting into the digital age, we are col-lecting member stories about their experience in the VIA. We need your story to tell the world why each of you believes in the VIA and why it is such an amazing organization. After the con-clusion of the Designer House, we are sure many of you have stories and we want to hear them! Please turn in all stories to Laura Kruger, and if you choose to be anonymous, that’s fine too!

VIA Logo

Members of the Marketing Committee have been working on proposals for a new logo to identify the VIA. Several options have been pre-pared and reviewed with individuals, small focus groups, and VIA Board members at the June meeting. Their comments, suggestions and con-cerns have been heard and integrated into two options that will be shared with you in the Sep-tember newsletter. Plan to attend the October General Meeting when we will ask VIA members to select one of the options.

In the interim, it is a good time to reflect on why we started this journey. Decades ago when the VIA separated from the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Pennsylvania, it created a logo to represent the new independent organization. Though we were standing on our own two feet, so to speak, our logo didn’t move far from the Federation.

General Federation of Women’s Clubs (note the sym-bol in the center)

General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Pennsylva-nia (note the shield shape, rib-bons, leaves, and eagle)

VIA Logo as of 2009 – has many of the same aspects of the Fed-eration logos.

Over the years, our logo has changed – in color, wording in the ribbons (some without, some with Mercy & Justice and some with Service & Education)

Moreover, the ways in which we use our logo has expanded. First needed mainly for letterhead and stationery, the logo now represents us in ad-vertisements and on the internet, posters, bro-chures, signs and many other uses that demand hi-resolution graphics.

Finally, Doylestown Health and Designer House logos have been updated and we need an image that complements these images. We believe that both options represent the VIA as a strong women’s organization. Both compliment the other two logos and yet stands on its own. We look forward to the “big reveal” in the next issue of the newsletter. We can share with you that there is no pre-conceived decision. So far, we seem to be evenly split between the two images but unanimous that either will well represent our organization.

Note: The Marketing committee strives to strengthen communications. We ask when you schedule or change an event or meeting that you please inform Marketing!

“Thank you” to all who voted for the proposed Articles of Incorporation changes. I am pleased to announce they have been approved by the membership and will be filed with the State next week.

Now that the Articles are approved, the SPTG continues to work on updating the Bylaws. Our goal is to complete the update and present it to the VIA board for approval in September.

Veterans Committee Jan Cope

Last year was notable for the VIA Veterans Com-mittee. We supported six great organizations in addition to our customary support for the YMCA's Veterans Day Luncheon, paperback book mailing, and hospital Get Well cards. You made a difference, and we're hoping to continue helping our charities again this coming year. We will do our usual collection of donations at the October and November general meetings, but if you'd like

to contribute now (or at any time during the year), please use the form included in this news-letter. Note that you may now list your firm or designate that the donation is in honor of or in memory of someone. Thank you and remember that the Veterans Committee is always open for new members.

Welfare Committee

Marianne Chabot

At the last meeting of the fiscal year, the com-mittee approved $750 in referrals; $150 from a Doylestown Hospital Case Manager for medica-tion for a patient being discharged, and $600 for FISH to assist with temporary housing, PECO, and rent.

We also voted to provide $700 in gift cards, held over from our winter giving program, to the BCHG Community Food Pantry at Doylestown for use in purchasing healthy food such as vegeta-bles, eggs, and meats for families and seniors on limited and fixed incomes. Of the more than 100 families served each week, 44% are children and 12% are seniors. Treasurer Susan Pajer hand de-livered the cards to the pantry and received gra-cious words of thanks from the staff.

The committee does not meet in July and Au-gust, however, members continue to accept re-ferrals throughout the summer months so that the needs of the community are met. We will hold our next meeting on September 13th.
