Led by banjoist Ralph Diana, the group includes Phil Kirk, trumpet; Eric Rosenau, trombone; Mike Olson, clarinet; Bob Pinsker, piano; Stan Kling, tuba; and Kenny Powell, drums. The Red Peppers has performed at numerous venues throughout San Diego and Orange County — most recently at the San Clemente Rotary “Dixieland By The Sea” festival. Currently the band performs Sundays at Adele’s Restaurant in the San Clemente Inn. (See JAZZ ALIVE on p. 2 for more information). This concert for AFCDJS will be dedicated to the memory of the late Charlie Romero, who played clarinet with the band during the last few years. Join us on July 20 for an afternoon of traditional New Orleans jazz — dance, or just listen! Coyote Hills Jazz Band Aug. 17 Gene Marklevits, trumpet/leader; George Gibbs, trombone; Brooks Coleman, reeds; Jack Sodikoff, piano; Art Levin, tuba; Don Hooker, drums; Evie Fiorani, vocals. The Coyote Hills Jazz Band is one of the busiest groups in Southern California. The band maintains a full schedule of festivals, jazz club performances and one-nighters and has an eclectic repertoire, an engaging style and an excellent vocalist in Evie Fiorani. Join us for an entertaining afternoon. Award-winning pianist Sue Palmer, San Diego’s “Queen of Boogie Woogie,” will make the keyboards jump and swing at the 29th Annual San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival, held Nov. 26-30, 2008 at the Town & Country Resort and Hotel on San Diego’s Hotel Circle. In February, Sue won the award for “Best self-produced CD” at the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. Sue, a highly-regarded bandleader and soloist in the San Diego music scene, will bring her Motel Swing Orchestra to the Thanksgiving Festival. She will also play Rockabilly “pumpin’ piano” with The Hayriders. Other keyboard wizards in the Festival lineup include Mimi Blais, Carl Sonny Leyland and Virginia Tichenor. Band pianists Ray Skjelbred and Chris Dawson will also play solo sets during the weekend. Ray will be playing with the Delta Stompers (a spinoff of the Yerba Buena Stompers). This new group plays a variety of New Orleans Jazz styles, from the earliest days of the music to its revival in the 1940s. Chris is the piano man for Tim Laughlin’s New Orleans All Stars. Tim’s band plays a more contemporary New Orleans style, reminiscent of Bob Crosby’s Bob Cats, featuring the wonderful cornetist Connie Jones. Also new in 2008 is the Statesmen of Jazz-Clarinet Summit. This band can boast of three all-star reedmen — Bob Wilber, Antti Sarpilla and Pieter Meijers — and a world-class rhythm section consisting of Rossano Sportiello, piano; Howard Alden , guitar; Nicki Parrott, bass; and Ed Metz, Jr., drums. The Statesmen, and other outstanding musicians will perform aboard the Crystal Symphony for the Jazzdagen Tours cruise to the Mexican Riviera (departing San Diego on Sunday, Nov. 30). The Cash Kings, a Johnny Cash tribute band led by vocalist Johnny D’Artenay, makes its Festival debut in 2008. Another band making its first appearance at the Festival is The Jazz Ensemble — a big band comprised of fabulous young musicians from the San Diego area. Dixie Express, another local band, is playing its first full schedule at the 29th Annual Festival. Please make sure to check out all three of these excellent groups during the weekend! Sadly, one of our favorite bands will be making its last Festival appearance in 2008 — the Buck Creek Jazz Band. However, it will be one of the first bands heard on Thursday night and will wrap up the Festival on Sunday evening. In addition to the Buck Creek group, other traditional bands at the Festival include the Grand Dominion Jazz Band, Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band, Titanic Jazz Band, Blue Street Jazz Band, Night Blooming Jazzmen, the Natural Gas Jazz Band, Coyote Hills

but dumb job. At other times he hasn’tbeen hired or was let go becausesomeone wanted to hear, say, “Stardust”and didn’t recognize Frank’s version ofit. The result is that Frank Chace haskept one of the lowest profiles amongoutstanding jazz players.”

During the 1970s, Chace alsolistened closely to the music of JohnColtrane and other modern jazzmen. Inthe right setting, his solos often wentfarther “out” than ever before!

This writer’s first encounter withFrank Chace was on April 28, 1985.Pianist Butch Thompson assembled aband to play a concert for the GoodTime Jazz Club in Libertyville, Illinois.Butch invited Frank to play clarinet, ina group that included Charlie Devore, cornet; John Otto, alto sax; JackMeilahn, guitar; Bill Evans, bass; andmyself on drums. It was an unbelievablethrill to hear that intense, wailing, clarinet coming from directly in front ofthe drums! The concert flew by muchtoo fast, and my only contact with FrankChace for the next year would be writtencorrespondence. The letters are

priceless, especially for the humor. Inone exchange, he obviously rememberedthe salutation on my first letter (“DearMr. Chace”). At the end of a very funnyletter, which ran to several pages, hesigned off as Your Friend, Mr. Chace.

In 1986, he was flown to New York,to perform at the JVC Jazz Festival’s“Chicago Jazz Summit.” An LP wassubsequently issued, featuring severalinstrumental combinations recorded liveat the festival. Unbelievably, Chace isonly heard on one track. However, it isa rip-roaring version of “At the JazzBand Ball,” played by Yank Lawson,George Masso, Eddie Miller, TruckParham, Ikey Robinson, Barrett Deemsand festival producer George Wein.Though we can wish that Chace washeard on more tracks, it is safe to saythat his two idiosyncratic choruses areeasily worth the price of the record!

My final gig with “Mr. Chace” wasin 1987, another concert for the GoodTime Jazz Club. On that occasion, I ledthe “Chicago Loopers” which alsoincluded Tom Pletcher, cornet; TomBartlett, trombone; Joe Johnson, piano;and Dan Shapera, bass. Frank’s playingthat day — passionate, rasping, keening, whispered — was other-

worldly. It was an indescribable high.He continued to play with unlimited

creativity for nearly 20 more years. In2001, Drummer Wayne Jones playedwith Chace at a gig sponsored byDelmark’s Bob Koester. He reportedthat “Frank sounded not the leastdimmed by the passing years.”

Frank Chace died on 28 Dec., 2007.He never gave up that fight to keep awild, free heart.

Following is a list of recent CDissues that feature Frank Chace:• Salty Dogs 1955 (Windin’ Ball CD-105)• Marty Grosz & the Honoris Causa JazzBand: Hooray for Bix (Good Time Jazz10065-2)• Marty Grosz & the Cellar Boys 1951/Honoris Causa Jazz Band alternate takes1957 (J&M CD-004)• Jim Kweskin with Ted Butterman & theNeo-Passé Jazz Band: Jump for Joy(Universe UV0051)• Jimmy Archey & Don Ewell at theEmporium of Jazz 1967 (GHB BCD-461/462)• Chicago Jazz Summit (Atlantic 81844-2)

(This is the 69th in a series ofbiographies of great traditional jazzmusicians. Continued from the May-June Jazz Rambler.)

By Hal SmithPresident, AFCDJS

Another highlight for the clarinetistin 1957 was the opportunity to meetLester Young when both wereperforming in Indianapolis. One night, after their club date, drummer BuddySmith offered to take Chace to the hotelwhere Young was staying. The othermusicians gathered around “The Prez,”but Chace hesitated. Young finallyasked the shy clarinetist to join thethrong, addressing him as “Long-Distance Man.” Compare LesterYoung’s introspective clarinet playingon “I Want a Little Girl” (with the KansasCity Six) with Chace’s on “For NoReason at All in C” from the “HoorayFor Bix” session. In Lester Young’sown words, “See if you hear something.”

In 1959, Chace was reunited withDon Ewell and John Dengler whenGrosz assembled a recording band forthe Audio Fidelity label. The band, with Max Kaminsky, Cutty Cutshall,Gene Schroeder (alternating sessionswith Ewell) and Don Maclean, recordedenough material for two LPs —“Roaring Twenties at the Gaslight” and“Banjo at the Gaslight Club.” As goodas these recordings are, Chace is evenbetter on some private tapes made duringthe same period. One of these, a sessionat Bill Priestley’s home in the summerof 1959, features the clarinetist in a triowith Ewell and Grosz. Musicians andjazz fans agree that Chace’s playing on

“I Can’t Believe that You’re in LoveWith Me” ranks with “Sorry” as one ofhis greatest performances.

During the early and mid ’60s, exceptfor a brief stint with Muggsy Spanier,Chace worked with the Salty Dogs andalso led his own bands. One such groupincluded veterans Johnny Mendel, FloydO’Brien, Tut Soper and Jim Lanigan aswell as younger musicians, Bob Skiver,Grosz and Wayne Jones. When thisgroup played for the Chicago HistoricalSociety in 1964, they were joined by avery special guest, Gene Krupa!

A late-’60s Chicago recordingsession by guitarist/vocalist JimKweskin resulted in three more classicChace solos. The album, “Jump ForJoy,” released in 1967, paired Kweskinwith cornetist Ted Butterman’s Neo-Passé Jazz Band. In addition toButterman, the personnel consisted ofChace (clarinet and bass sax); Kim

Cusack, clarinet; Johnny Frigo, violin;Grosz (guitar, banjo and arranger);Truck Parham, bass; and Wayne Jones, drums. Fellow reedman Kim Cusackcalled Chace’s playing on “You’re Notthe Only Oyster in the Stew” “one of thesublime moments in jazz.” The clarinetchoruses on “Memphis Blues” and“There’ll Be Some Changes Made” aretwo more outstanding examples of FrankChace at his best.

Recently, the GHB label released atwo-CD set of Chace playing with aspecially-assembled band in 1967 atthe Emporium of Jazz in Mendota,Minnesota. The group included BillPrice (cornet), Jimmy Archey(trombone), Don Ewell (piano), BillEvans (bass) and Sammy Price (drums).A cursory glance at the personnel andtheir stylistic differences might causeconcern. However, the musicians, particularly Chace and Ewell, soundwonderful together.

About Chace, musician/authorRichard Hadlock explains, “Most jazzplayers learn to adjust, at leastsomewhat, to shallow audiences, wrongheaded entrepreneurs, panderingbandleaders and jaded or inept sidemen.

“Not clarinetist Frank Chace, however. Over the 30-some years I’vebeen observing his largely hidden talent,I have heard story after story to do withFrank’s losing out because he wouldn’tplay ‘pretty’ or ‘straight’ or ‘traditional’or some other term that meant goingoutside his own way of making music....

“There have been occasions whenFrank simply would not take a paying
