It has been interesting to watch thecoverage of the continuingrevelations about the troubles inFIFA recently.

It is clear that there is somethingrotten at the heart of football’s worldgoverning body; the fact that a lot ofthis has been “hidden in plain sight”for so long has been a mystery. Andthe fact that it has taken the FBI(from a nation not that keen on the“beautiful game”) to bring all theissues to light is surprising too.

Football as we all know is nowbig business and so when the heartof football is rotten people rightlyworry.

Also in the media is the crisiswith Greece’s debts and potentialexit from the euro. As I writenegotiations are ongoing but itremains to be seen whether therewill be a positive outcome.

The most serious ongoing bit ofnews is the growing wave ofimmigrants coming to Greece andItaly from North Africa.

It is a cruel irony that Greece andItaly are two of the countries leastable to deal with the crisis and theEU seems to be very unsure as towhat to do.

For many people the biggest

worry is that in all these situations, despite the top level investigationsand discussions, it is the people, thepoor and powerless that suffer.

Those affected by theearthquake in Haiti who do not seethe money given for them, thepeople of Greece who are caughtbetween a rock (EU) and a hardplace (their new Prime Minister), andthe desperate people literallywashed up on the shores ofsouthern Europe with nowhere togo.

When the disciples tried torebuke children coming to Jesus,Jesus said the famous words:

"Let the little children come tome, and do not hinder them, for thekingdom of heaven belongs to suchas these."

Those little regarded by thesociety at the time were just asimportant to him as the disciples.

It is perhaps timely at this time ofcrisis to remember Jesus’ teachingthat those in need, and thevulnerable and powerless are just asclose to God’s heart as those of uswho enjoy relative security andprosperity.

Samantha, my wife, always falls into thetrap of thinking that now summer is infull swing there’s not so much to do inthe garden except sunbathe, have abarbeque, watch the frail beauty of thebutterfly and scream out loud every time

a bee/wasp comes within a metre of her.I’ll admit that jobs in the garden can

slow down if the weather is dry. Thegrass growth can stall and it can looklike straw, weeds can be hoed and left towither in the heat which means lessbending down and picking them up todispose of.

However, there are tasks that don’tstand out, but if taken in hand now willonly benefit the garden throughout therest of the year.

Summer-prune apple trees – Cutback the leading shoots of each branchby at least half their length to encouragethe production of side shoots. Pruneonly the current season's growth in thisway, cutting to just above a leaf. Thishas the added bonus of bringing lightand air to the tree thus ripening the fruit.

Dead head flowers – Plants produceflowers to set seed and reproduce. So,taking away the spent flower means thisactivity has to start again which meansmore flowers in your garden.

Apply liquid feed – Annuals(including Dahlias) and greenhousevegetables will benefit from a boost of

nutrients every week now. A tomato feedwill do this task nicely.

Top up the bird bath – This will givewildlife a vital source of water to drink

and clean themselves. Also, keepfeeders full as birds use up a lot ofenergy flying from garden to garden.

Trim hedges and topiary – Now thatbirds have finishednesting it’s safe to cutyour hedges. By doingthis now, it will alsorestrict the rootdevelopment, thusslowing its growth, ifdone in late August, you'll probably nothave to cut yourhedging again untilnext year. Trimming

your topiary now will give it a sharp lookthroughout the rest of the summer. But,only do this on a dull day as the sun’srays are strong and can singe the opencut.

Prune Wisteria – Cut back theunwanted wispy growth to 6-8 buds, thiswill tidy it up and also start the processof flower bud development.

Set up an irrigation system – At thistime of year we tend to take a well-earned break but your plants andvegetables will still need watering. Youcould ask your neighbour which ischeaper!

Climbers – New pliable growthshould be tied in and trained now.Remember: the more horizontal thestems, the more flowers. As I’vementioned before this is due to the saprising and gathering in the horizontal

stems. Also, cutting back side shootshard on roses (if the flower is spent) willencourage strong growth and moreflowers.

Lawn cutting – In dry spells raise theblade height but keep cutting as it willthicken up the grass. Don't waste moneywatering it as grass is very robust andwill ‘green up’ as soon as it rains. Also, check the sharpness of the blade, as ablunt blade will ‘rip’ rather than cut whichwill give a yellowing effect to the tips.

Now, it seems like a list of tasks thatwill fill up all your spare time but, to behonest, they are jobs that can be donewhilst pottering in your garden (exceptthe tree pruning). Just 10-15 minutes aday spent in the garden will see animprovement.

So: doing little and often means youcan enjoy the garden the same way asmy wife does! I wonder if I can get heroff the sun lounger to help?
