At our meeting held on Monday June 10th, we had Kevin Bailey to give a talkentitled 'Hostas and Ferns'. This was a late booking due to the illness of CarlMadden, the previously booked speaker.

In his talk, Mr Bailey began by saying some gardeners are reluctant Hostagrowers because of the slug and snail problems. But with judicious use oforganic slug pellets fortnightly, garlic wash, planting them in pots and theencouragement of hedgehogs, thrushes and frogs, damage to Hostas could bekept to a minimum. With the range of blue, green, yellow and variegatedplants and leaf size anything from the size of a teaspoon to a dinner plate, there are varieties for every garden.

In part two about Ferns, Mr Bailey spoke about a fraction of the 20,000species of fern which grow around the world. They are generally regarded asthe most complex of non-flowering plants, which reproduce themselves fromleaf spores. Growing ferns from spores requires great attention to detail and, after one or two years, young ferns should be large enough for your garden. The greatest requirement, therefore, is patience.

Our next meeting will be on July 8th when we will visit Cae yr Haul, thegarden Mr T. M. Smith has made overlooking farmland at St Asaph. We meetat 6·15 pm outside Llanferres Village Church. Further details from the Hon.

Turnip, Potato & Parsley SoupIt may be summer but we are still making gallons of soup and this recipe usingbaby turnips has a wonderful new season taste to it. If by the time you arereading this we are in the high 20s, it will be equally delicious chilled.

Although everything is growing vigorously through June and July with thewarm weather and inevitable rain, it can be a challenging time for locallysourced vegetables. The winter roots have all finished and the summercourgettes and beans have not quite got going yet. So, it was wonderfulwhen grower extraordinaire Phil from Mostyn Gardens arrived bearingamong other things baby turnips.

To serve 4300g turnips200g potatoes2 carrots2 medium onions1 litre vegetable stock sprig thymelarge bunch parsley2 tbsp olive oil30g buttersalt & pepper

Roughly chop peeled or scrubbed turnips, onions, carrots and potatoes.Add olive oil and butter to a large pan and heat gently until butter has melted.Add chopped vegetables and sauté over a low heat until starting to softenbut not brown.

Separate parsley leaves and stalks. Put the leaves to one side.Add thyme, parsley stalks and stock to the vegetables and bring to the boil.Simmer gently for about 30 minutes until vegetables are soft.Remove from heat and remove thyme and parsley stalks.Add parsley leaves and blend until smooth.Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

Almost 10,000 Royal Welshmen lost their lives in the Great War. At the outbreak, theWelsh Regiment had 7 battalions which expanded to 42 by the end of 1918, almost halfserving in France and Flanders, but others as far afield as Gallipoli, Egypt, Italy,Palestine and Macedonia.

The 1st battalion Welch Fusiliers first went into action on the 19th October 1914, 1,150strong but by the end of that month were reduced to just 90 men, that, despite receivingreinforcements, after the desperate defence of Ypres, at the battle of Gheluvelt.

During the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. the 38th Welch Division was given thetask of clearing the strongly held Mametz Wood. A brigade attack was driven back onthe 7th with heavy casualties, and the wood was not taken until the 12th after aDivisional scale attack, and the Germans finally withdrew.

It was here another local soldier was to lose his life, aged just 19. Charles ("Charlie")Williams of Sawmill Cottage, Loggerheads was killed along with 30 of his comradesfrom Ruthin in the taking of the wood, one of the 600 missing of the 4,000 casualties. Ihope to tell my account of Charlie in the next issue.

The Denbighshire Free Press at that time reported the latest war news "in thedesperate battles now taking place"….."all goes well"

The General commanding the 38th Division issued a special order of the day stating"The reputation of the Welsh Division never stood higher than today" described as a"magnificent success"……."during the past 16 days of strenuous fighting" The Divi-sion had "met and smashed elements of 43 regiments"…"a truly glorious record".

With some irony Charlie was killed just a few kilometres from where John Cordinerwas to lose his life a few weeks later, in fact, it is highly likely John was in the exactarea, as the 1st Cheshires “took their tea” in the former No Man’s Land on the 19th ofJuly before “bivouacking in an old German trench”. A strange co-incidence for formerpupils of Llanferres school, so far from home.

Men of Llanferres in the Great War

The impressive Welsh Dragon at MametzWood unveiled in 1987.

The war office sanctioned the use of"Welch" in 1920 and the title "Fusiliers"in 1923 for the ordinary ranks. There wereover 2,800 decorations awarded duringthe war, including eight Victoria Crosses.Famous Royal Welch included RobertGraves, Siegfried Sassoon and Hedd Wyn.

Men of Llanferres in the Great War

I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who has contacted me over the past fewweeks with information. In particular I would like to thank Tony King who has perhapsidentified a 9th WW1 soldier, Private Herbert Francis, killed in an accident with theoccupational forces in Germany in December 1918. If anyone has any information onPrivate Francis, I would be very pleased to receive it.

Likewise, any information on soldiers from WW2 and other conflicts. At the momentI have a few names taken from those buried in the churchyard, any other informationagain much appreciated. Thank you.

Also, my particular thanks to Efion and Vivien Williams for their kind assistance andguidance. Please visit their excellent websites www.northopwm.com and its sister sitewww.flintshirewarmemorials.com for anyone interested in Flintshire soldiers in WW1.

There is also a link on the News & Views website www.llanferres.org to a history of the1st Cheshire Battalion for further reading. Only part 1 (1914) at this stage as it hasproved impossible to condense any further - I hope to complete subsequent parts in thenear future.

Summer is here and Ihope that we have somedecent weather for allthe local events plannedfor the next couple ofmonths.

The problem of the lack parking space atLoggerheads is now an issue and i recently metwith local politicians to see if i could solicit theirsupport in getting additional funding to helpprovide extra parking in the area. I have receiveda letter from the Welsh Government ministerEdwina Heart stating that funding for extra CarParking at Loggerheads was a matter forDenbighshire and not the Welsh Government. This is bad news considering the importance ofthe Country Park as a tourist attraction andconflicts with the Welsh Governments recentstatements about the importance of Tourism toWales and the additional funding available fortourism projects.

The Trunk Roads Agency who are an arm ofWelsh Government did imply that they wouldhelp with funding for additional parking if thecounty supported parking restrictions. Sadly thisdid not happen.

I attended the Loggfest event at Loggerheadsthis last weekend and I would like toacknowledge all the hard work put in by the localbusinesses to make the event a success. The

weather could have been kinder but people werestill enjoying themselves. Thanks should also go to Colomendy whoprovided additional parking for the day and tothe local youngsters who acted as car parkattendants.

The next stage of the Ruthin Area School reviewis underway with proposals to close, amalgamateand build newschools. These are now all out in the open forfurther consultation. The good news is that ourown local school Ysgol Bro Famau will not beaffected by the changes and this is in part downto the fact that it is seen as an excellent schoolwith very good teaching standards and results. We are the only school not affected by theproposed changes but we can not afford to becomplacent and we need to continue to supportthe school as a community for future generations.

As you may have read in the press DenbighshireCounty Council has reluctantly decided to acceptthe Welsh Governments Inspectors final positionon the next LDP. The inspector had asked foradditional land for a further 1000 homes on topof the 7500 the county had originally proposed.Denbighshire agreed to do this but wanted thisland to be put on a reserve list. The inspectorrejected this suggestion and personally added afurther four parcels of land that we as a countyhad not considered.

Many Councillors felt that we were beingdictated to by the Inspector and that the WelshGovernments original figure of 8500 new homesfor Denbighshire was being imposed on us.

This means that land for up to forty six newhomes in Llanarmon will now be included in theLDP with out any restrictionsbut the good news is that the original plan for nofurther development in Llanferres in the new LDPremains.

To throw out the plan may have cost the counciltax payer in Denbighshire a further two millionpounds especially if we had to start the processall over again. It would have also left us withoutan LDP and vulnerable to applications fordevelopment anywhere in the county. Theseapplications would have been difficult to opposewith out an LDP and costly to defend if taken tocourt.

On a final note I am pleased to announce that allthe community councils in the ward have nowproduced a five year plan / wish list and if youwould like anything to be included please let usknow.

I hope that you all have a great summer andplease do not hesitate to contact me if you haveand issues or problems that you need help with.Regards,

Martyn

Red kite over Llanferres! TimGriffiths kindly drew our attention toa Red Kite which was flying overLlanferres on Tuesday 18th of June.Did you see it? It was about for acouple of hours being harassed byCrows and Jackdaws. These Corvidsreally do not seem to like Kites as Iwitnessed them carrying out similarharassment when I was inOxfordshire recently. There, Redkites are so common that the wardenof a nature reserve told me heexpected to see them every time helooked at the sky.

Viewers of the BBC 'Spring Watch'program may have seen the efforts ofGreat spotted woodpeckers to enticetheir young to vacate the nest. I wasamused to see the same dramaenacted in a local wood where the twoparent birds were coming to the nesthole and then flying off to anothertree calling loudly all the time.Although the youngsters wereanswering, they were showing littleenthusiasm for leaving the comfort ofthe nest. Kids, Eh!!

On the same day but at a differentplace I watched a pair of Redstartsfeeding young that had left the nestand were hiding in the nearby foliage. There was another pair of adultsnearby but I think their brood wasstill nest bound. It was pleasing tosee Redstarts apparently doing well.In last month's edition I reported nothaving seen any Wood warblers thisyear. I am pleased to report that theydid eventually arrive but later thanusual and, I think, in smallernumbers. Talking to people in otherparts of the country, I get the

impression that is the picturethroughout.

I note that bumblebees seem to be ingood numbers but the workers, nowforaging for pollen and nectar, looksmaller than usual. These will be thefirst workers to hatch from the newnests and it would suggest that thequeen, who raises the first brood, haddifficulty in finding sufficient food forthe larvae during the cold spring. Now that the weather has improved(??) we can only hope that the nextbrood will be better fed.

Butterflies are in short supply thisyear and one can only surmise thatthere have been heavy losses duringthe coldest spring since 1891. All ournative butterflies have to survive thewinter as caterpillars, pupae or adultinsects and severe cold can havedevastating results on them. However, I visited Eyarth RocksNature Reserve in late May and waspleasantly surprised at the number ofPearl-bordered fritillaries which Isaw. This is, nationally, a very rarespecies which has declineddramatically over the past severaldecades, for reasons not fullyunderstood. I used to see them, herein Llanferres, fifteen years ago but I

Nature Noteshave not seen any here for the last tenor so. They require a very precisehabitat of bracken and Dog violet. The butterflies emerge in May - theywere about two weeks late this year -mate, lay eggs but may only live forabout a week but some can liveseveral weeks if conditions aresuitable. The eggs hatch after 10-15days and the caterpillars feed up toJuly when they hibernate in thebracken litter until the weatherwarms up in April or May of thefollowing year. They then pupate foronly 9-10 days before emerging asadult insects. The process is veryweather dependant but it seems thatthe warm spell in late May/early Junehas favoured them this year.

Have you noticed a red 'butterfly'flying at the moment. It is not abutterfly but the red and blackCinnebar moth with red/bright pinkunderwings. It is just emerging from

the pupa in which it has overwinteredin the soil. It often flies by day and itsyellow and black caterpillars feed onRagwort.
