Welcome

Welcome to the Summer edition ofNews & Views.

There was a packed June calendar ofevents and we hope to carry somemore photographs in the next editionof News & Views, as several tookplace too late in the month forinclusion in this issue.

We had a very pleasant hour or so atthe book swap and agreed to vary theday of the week for future swapevenings to allow others to attendwho may have commitments oncertain days of the week. The nextmeeting will be in August due toholiday commitments.

It was disturbing to hear of oneresident’s experience from the GallonWalk, and we wondered if any othersin the community had views theywould like to share on this event, positive or negative?

On June 13th four members who have been involved in creating thewildlife garden at Loggerheads Park explained to visitors the purpose ofthe garden which is to encourage all wildlife from the smallest spider tobees, butterflies, birds, amphibians and even voles.

Fun in the GardenPlease see separate report on Page 17 on Fun in the Garden; just to saywe are very grateful for the enormous support we received from so manypeople, enabling us to raise over £1,000. Just over half of this will go tothe orphanage in India.

Veneziana FundWe have now received a cheque in the sum of £370 from this fund whichis directed towards churches and buildings over 200 years old. This willoffset some of the cost of renewing the Vestry roof which was completedlast autumn. Every time you eat a Veneziana Pizza, a small sum goesinto this fund, which was originally set up to aid Venice when a vastnumber of buildings were flooded. We have to wait 5 years before we canapply again for funds.

Induction of New RectorOur new Rector is to be the Reverend Adrian Copping, currently Rectorin the Bangor-on-Dee area. He will be inducted at a special service inGwernaffield on Monday 7th September at 7.00 p.m. His first Commun-ion in Llanferres will be on Sunday 13th at 3 p.m. It would be helpful ifthose wishing to attend the induction could inform Churchwardens asthere will be refreshments afterwards.

Monthly Recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE

Home made pizzaWith the school holidays fast approaching, this is a great recipefor young people to make either by themselves or with someadult help.

This recipe involves making the base from scratch which is notdifficult and great fun. If you want to make it quicker and easier, just buy a pizza base.

Basic Bread recipe375g strong bread flourPinch of salt225 ml of tepid water (38 degrees C)10 gram of sugar25 gram of fresh yeast or 3 tablespoons of dried yeast.50 ml olive oil

Dissolve the yeast and sugar in the tepid water, the sugar helpsto activate the yeast. After about 5 minutes the water shouldmake a fizzing sound if you hold your ear to it. Place the flour, salt and oil in to a bowl and roughly mix together. Add the water& yeast mix and knead until a soft dough is formed. After thedough is formed place onto a lightly floured work surface andallow to rest for a couple of minutes. The dough should have aelastic texture. If it is a little tight it needs kneading a little more.

Roll dough into flat round disk. Cover with a thin layer of tomatopuree and toppings of choice and finally cheese. Allow to riseuntil dough has doubled in size. Bake in a hot over 220 C forabout 10 minutes.

County Councillor's ReportDear allIt’s now eight weeks since myankle replacement op. I was doingbrilliantly until last week, when Iwas in Glasgow, I walked too farand now am back on crutches andin severe pain!

Fortunately I have been able toget to most council meetings, as Inow have a driver, who is beingpaid for by travel expenses!!(Although I’m not really givinghim very much!)

The only meeting with any localconsequences was a rural trans-port forum, which I chaired on16th June. The bus services be-tween Ruthin and Mold were dis-cussed and I am very grateful toBob Barton, for attending, as heuses the local bus service, andwas therefore able to contributeusefully to the discussions.

Whilst I was in Glasgow I realisedjust how lucky we all are to live inour beautiful part of Denbigh-shire. I was on the Glasgow toEdinburgh train at 8.30 a.m. onemorning, when a very drunkenand embittered ex-member of thearmed services sat next to me. Hebecame verbally abusive and Ihad to call the conductor who puthim off at the next stop. As theman was escorted off the train heturned to me and said:”you’re avery lucky (something unrepeat-able) I’ve got a knife in my pock-et”. It was only after he got offthat I realised how lucky I was toavoid injury and I reflected onhow fortunate we are to live insuch a civilised and ordered com-munity in rural Denbighshire.I will be more mobile in the nestmonth or so, I wish everyone alovely summer and I will reportagain in the September issue.

Glebe Field, LlanferresProposed development of the Glebe Field by the

Representative Body of the Church in Wales.

The St Berres Parochial Church Council deeply regrets the grantingof planning permission on the Glebe Field. The PCC has consistentlyopposed the decision made in Cardiff by the Representative Body ofthe Church in Wales.

The PCC are continuing their opposition and have sent a stronglyworded letter to Bishop Gregory of St Asaph, expressing our views. We have requested a site meeting in the near future, with a view tomaking the Bishop aware of the views of the PCC and of the residentsof Llanferres.

We wish to thank all residents for their active support in this matter,

The season is going with a swing sofar. We have only missed one game todate due to weather, which is thesame as last year (most players judgethe quality of the summer by thenumber of missed opportunities toclatter a cricket ball around a field),and are thoroughly enjoying playingin the North Wales Cricket League.

We entered the Welsh Cup for thefirst and last time, having been abso-lutely thrashed by Marchwiel &Wrexham, who fielded their profes-sional Australian fast bowler to speedthe game up a bit!

We have won two league fixturesagainst good opposition, and alsobeaten a number of good teams infriendlies. We have a qualified coachgiving regular sessions and the teamis very different to the eclectic mix wewere a few years ago. Hopefully bythe time you read this we will bevying for promotion to League 5.

Blokes from Llanferres who haveplayed so far are Sean Thomas andTom Hall. Tom has become a regularin the side, and bowls terrifyinglyquickly, as well as having a good eyefor launching cricket balls as faras they will go whenever given thechance (when he actually hits themrather than missing). Sean Thomasis doing well in the field and worksdhard throughout the game to un-nerve the opposition with his accu-rate throws. Not had a chance todemonstrate his batting prowess yet,but his moment of glory will come.

Maeshafn players include the foreverpresent Steve Pugh, a mass of bruis-es and damaged limbs from his timebehind the stumps. Best known forhis wicketkeeping, he did hit thewinning runs in a recent tight matchon Anglesey, much to the amazementof his team mates.

Dave Williams is the captain, andprobably best known round thevillages for his resemblance to aformer Sheffield United player of asimilar name.

We have about 8-9 players left fromthe two villages out of a squad of20, and the remainder are a mix ofplayers from across the area. Wouldbe nice to keep the link strong, soanyone wanting to come along forpractice or friendlies on Wednesdaynights at Nercwys or Shotton wouldbe very welcome.

Readers will have seen in the pressand on television that there has beenan unprecedented influx of paintedlady butterflies this year. Nowherewas it more evident than on a sunny30th May at Bodnant Gardens wherethey could be seen in their thousands.Blue flowers particularly attractedthem with many quite small plantshosting eight or nine specimens. Thesound of camera shutters was almostdeafening! I did a walk round ourdistrict the following day and foundthem widely scattered but in onlysmall numbers. On that day I record-ed eleven species but only a total offifty two specimens both small countsfor the time of year. The painted ladies started in NorthAfrica, especially in the Atlas Moun-tains in Morocco. The migration be-gins around January and theyprogress northwards through Europe, breeding as they go until they arrivein Britain usually in early June. Eachgeneration takes about five to sixweeks to complete its life cycle - theadult insects living about two weeks. So if the migration starts in late Jan-uary it is probably the fifth genera-tion that arrives in Britain. Whilehere they will normally produce twogenerations, the caterpillars feedingon several species of thistle, beforebeing killed off by the cold weather. The butterflies need a body tempera-ture of about 27°C to be able to fly. Itwas once thought that the butterfliesstarted a reverse migration back toAfrica in the autumn but not a singlebutterfly has ever been recorded

heading south. Why this migrationtakes place is a mystery as it seems tobe of no benefit to the survival of thespecies which is probably the mostwidespread butterfly in the world asit can be found in North America,Asia, Africa and Europe.Flowering widely at the moment ishedge woundwort(Stachys sylvatica).Growing to about fifteen to eighteeninches(20 - 45cm) tall it has the typi-cal square stems of the mint family, towhich it belongs, and carries beet-root-red flowers decorated with whitespots. It has long been regarded as acountry remedy for cuts and woundsand the oil it contains has beenproved to have antiseptic properties. The leaves were used as a poultice ormade into ointments or infusions andin ancient times it was regarded al-most as a cure-all. Its close relatives, the marsh woundwort and betonywere thought to have even betterqualities yet field woundwort has nohealing benefits at all. Betony wasalso planted in churchyards to wardoff evil spirits which seems ratherstrange but perhaps early Christiansbelieved in hedging their bets.It is pleasing to note that otters arestill active on our local river andstreams. I keep finding new spraints(droppings) showing that the animalshave recently passed that way al-though I have yet to see one as theyare mostly nocturnal.at are other peoples impressions?
