Dear friends,

In my mother’s later years she would often spend time reflecting on her life.

She lived to a good old age of 92 and brought up 7 children so there were many

memories for her to remember and give thanks. Now and again she would say

that she had had a good life, lived to over 90 and would love to give some of

her time to younger folk who died without having much of a life.

This comment of my mother’s was brought home to me when in May we had

the terrible bombing in the concert hall in Manchester. Many of those who died

had so much to live for and their lives in many ways were just beginning.

The terrible attack at the concert and subsequent loss of life and life changing

injuries brought home the fragility of life. It was a reminder to us all of what is

important in life and that is the love and friendship of another person. You can

have all the money in the world but that does not mean you will be happy.

Happiness and contentment comes when one shares one’s life with others, it’s

the giving, receiving and sharing of love.

Along with the heart rendering scenes from that awful night there were stories

of good deeds done by many people from Manchester and further afield. Here

we saw citizenship, decency and shared humanity on show as people rolled up

their sleeves and got involved. Being a passive on-looker was not for these

people and there were many heroes that night who put themselves out for their

neighbour in need.

There’s no easy answer here on how to tackle and deal with evil that lurks in

the shadows and seeks to destroy people, community and a way of life. It falls

upon all of us to pray and work for a world where love, respect for neighbour

and seeking the common good prevails.

There’s a story of a young Robert Louis Stevenson who was looking out of

the window one evening at the Edinburgh street in which he lived, when the

old-fashioned lamplighter came past on his rounds. The boy’s nurse called him

to come and have his supper, but he couldn’t bear to tear himself away from

this remarkable sight. ‘Look, Look!’ he cried, his face pressed against the glass,

‘There’s a man out there punching holes in the darkness’.

Let’s be people who punch ‘holes in the darkness’ knowing as St. Paul tells

us in Romans 8 that ‘nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God

in Christ Jesus our Lord.’

With best regards

Glenn

How to share what little you have and get it back !!

A rich man died who owned 17 camels. He had 3 sons and left one son 1/2 of his camels, another 1/3 and the final son 1/9 of his camels.

After a while they realised that they could not divide them as requested and were puzzled. A poor neighbour who had only 1 camel offered to give them his only camel and they accepted it.

The first son then got 1/2 of the 18 camels being 9, the second son 1/3 being 6 and the final son 1/9 being 2 bringing the total to the original 17 camels.

They then returned the one camel to the poor man with grateful thanks.

Share what you have and you will have it returned with thanks, in due course.

Received from John Brayshaw

One of the most difficult things to give away is kindness - it is usually returned. Anon

T he General Synod has rejected moves to end

the tradition and legal requirement to read

banns for couples intending to marry in church

services.

Members voted against a Private Member's Motion calling for draft legislation to be drawn up to transfer 'ecclesiastical

preliminaries', the legal paperwork currently carried out by Church of

England clergy before a church wedding, to civil registrars.

“Clergy should be concerned with marriage teaching and preparation and not the 'heavy burden' of a legal role”, the member said.

"Here is an opportunity to simplify an ancient tradition by which we have become hidebound and in the process to lift the burden of the law from wedding couples and from the clergy and indeed from our diocesan registrars."

But the General Synod also heard from members who said the reading of banns presented significant opportunities for mission and evangelism.

One Archdeacon said: “The Church of England conducts around

45,000 weddings a year, this means we have the potential to have

direct contact with 90,000 people, largely in the 18 to 45 age group,

the very group that we particularly struggle to engage with. The vast

majority of those weddings are done by banns. This gives us a real opportunity to make connections, to build relationships and to demon-strate something of God's love to the couples who come to us through our care and concern.”

The publication of banns involves reading aloud during a service on three Sundays a declaration that the couple intend to marry and requir-ing anyone who knows a reason in law why the couple may not marry to declare this.

Currently the large majority of weddings conducted in Church of

England parishes involve the reading of banns.

A L.C.C. statement received from Cllr Karen Renshaw -

Leeds City Council no longer has the resources to replace bins for free, and the decision to charge for bins was made as part of the Council’s budget setting process for 2017/18.

Reductions in the Government’s funding for local authorities means we have to make difficult decisions and continually review the services we provide. A number of neighbouring authorities have also introduced similar charges.

We charge for black and brown wheeled bins and black hand bins. The decision was made to not charge for green bins in an effort to maximise recycling and make it easier for residents to manage their waste. There is a charge to pay when a bin has gone missing or has been damaged, and needs replacing. Charges also apply for additional bins where residents have been identified as eligible to receive one.

We recognise that if your bin has been stolen or has been the subject of anti social behaviour it is not your fault, but we no longer have the resources to replace bins for free. Returning your bin to your property as soon as possi-ble after it has been emptied, on the day of collection, will help keep it safe and secure. You may also wish to number your bin so it is clear that it is for your property. If your bin has been the subject of antisocial behaviour then we would encourage you to report this to the Police.

Replacement 140 litre and 240 litre wheeled bins cost £15.40. Replacement 360 litre wheeled bins cost £31.80.

Do you offer any concessions?

No. The price of the bin is just a contribution to the overall cost and is already highly subsidised, so is it a standard price for all residents.

You can pay by debit or credit card at the time you place the order. Please note we do not accept cash, cheques or postal orders.

The price does not include any administration or delivery costs, and is a contribution towards the cost of each bin. If you require a new or replacement bin, please call us on 0113 222 44 06.

There is nothing in the Environmental Protection Act 1990 that states we must provide bins free of charge. We are required to provide a collection of household waste free of charge, but we are able to charge for the provision of a bin or bins. As the decision to charge for the service and policy change was democratically made we cannot accept any complaints or appeals. We will only accept formal complaints if the service have failed to implement the agreed policy correctly.

I pay my Council Tax; why do I have to pay for a bin?

Council Tax is a property tax and is not a direct charge for services or items. Council Tax is used by the council to fund a wide range of services for all the people of Leeds.

It's unfortunate that we now have to become more vigilant regarding our bins.

Are you a dog owner?

The lack of separate bins for dog

excrement in the community has

been brought to my notice.

Cllr Karen Renshaw has

established that it’s permissible to

dispose of ‘dog waste’ - in sealed

bags, in standard litter bins. Editor

We‘re all familiar with the fourth verse, here is the poem in full.

God’s Garden

The Lord God planted a garden

In the first white days of the world,

And He set there an angel warden

In a garment of white unfurled.

So near to the peace of Heaven,

That the hawk might rest with the wren,

For there in the cool of the even

God walked with the first of men.

And I dreamt that these garden—closes

With their shade and their sunflecked sod

And their lilies and bowers of roses,

Were laid by the hand of God.

The kiss of the sun for pardon,

The song of the birds for mirth,

One is nearer God’s heart in a garden

Than anywhere else on earth.

For He broke it for us in a garden

Under the live trees

Where the angel of strength was the warden

And the soul of the world found ease.

Do our children know what an apron is? The principle use of grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. It served as a pot holder for removing hot pans from the oven It was useful for drying children's tears and on occasions was used for cleaning dirty ears. From the chicken coop the apron was used to carry eggs, fussy chicks and sometimes half

hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came they were ideal hiding places for shy children. When the weather was cold Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in this apron. From the garden it carried all types of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried the pods out to the hills. In ’the fall’ the apron was usec to bring apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company came up the road it was surprising how much furniture that old

apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready grandma walked onto the porch, waved her apron and the men knew it

was time to come in from the fields for dinner. They would go crazy nowadays trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron!

I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron but love. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace grandma’s apron.

I love this (The Apron) reminds me of my childhood. Margaret Tinker (Glenn’s sister) From Cudworth’s Community Magazine

The Tea Cupboard

W ith so many urgent practical issues facing humanity, why waste time with the Trinity, a doctrine that most of the world (and even much of

Christianity) regards as contrived and irrelevant?

By way of response, let me offer you a story that was told to me by my longtime friend and teacher, the Abkhazian dervish elder Murat Yagan.

In the years immediately following World War II, Murat recounts, he spent time in a remote corner of eastern Turkey. There he became friends with an elderly couple. Life had been good to them, but their one sadness was that they missed their only son, who had left some years before to work in Istanbul.

One day when Murat visited them, the old couple were bursting with pride, eager to show him the new tea cupboard that their son had just shipped from Istanbul. It was indeed a handsome piece of furniture, and the woman had already arranged her best tea set on its upper shelf. Murat was polite but curious. Why would their son go through such an expense to send them a tea cupboard? And if the purpose of this piece of furniture was stor-age, why were there no drawers? “Are you sure it’s a tea cupboard?” Murat asked. They were sure.

But the question continued to nag at Murat. Finally, just before taking his leave, he said, “Do you mind if I have a look at this tea cupboard?” With their permission, he turned the backside around and unscrewed a couple of pack-ing boards. A set of cabinet doors swung open to reveal inside a fully opera-tive ham radio set. That “tea cupboard,” of course, was intended to connect the couple to their son. But unaware of its real contents, they were simply using it to display their china.

To my mind, that is an apt analogy for how Christians have been using the Holy Trinity. It is our theological tea cupboard, upon which we display our finest doctrinal china, our prized assertion that Jesus, a human being, is fully divine. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

But what if inside the Trinity is concealed a powerful communications tool that could connect us to the rest of reality (visible and invisible), allow us to navigate our way through many of the doctrinal and ethical logjams of our time, and place the teachings of Jesus in a dynamic framework that would truly unlock their power? It is simply a matter of turning the tea cabinet around and looking inside. I know that there is indeed a ham radio concealed inside this Trinitarian tea cupboard.

At a time when spiritual imagination and boldness are at an all-time low and the Christian church hovers at the edge of demise, perhaps now more than ever the time is ripe to remove the packing board from this tea cupboard and release its contents. July/August Adopted Charity

A s we reach the middle of the year work continues to balance the books with some very good fund raising events held.

The Easter Egg raffle raised £90

The Jumble Sale and Rag Mountain raised £180

‘Count your Blessings’ raised £490.

The excellent "Fun" Barn Dance raised £329. A lot of hard work, and

greatly appreciated by all who danced the night away.

Please remember, that if you kindly donate money to St. Michael's Church and you are a tax payer, that by using Gift Aid the church can benefit by a further 25%.

MARRIED COUPLES TAX ALLOWANCE

Are you married and one of you earning less than £11,500 and the other more than but less than £45,000 a year?

Did you know that by spending about 10 minutes on a computer you could save about £220 a year in tax by transferring the tax allowance of the lower paid person?

Not only that but you can also reclaim for the last 2 tax years which could give you a further refund of about £420 paid direct to the higher earner.

So, for ten minutes of your time you could gain £600 plus.

Not a bad rate of pay! If you do not have a computer then I am sure someone will be willing to help you.

CHURCHYARD REPORT

The battle to win the grass cutting continues without a break, apart from when it is too wet. Many thanks to those who have donated funds to assist in the costs involved. We have just needed to replace one of the mowers at a cost of £925. This mower is a more heavy duty one and hopefully with a 3 year guarantee will last longer. Any donations towards the cost of the mower would be grate-fully received. Thank you.
