Vicar’s Viewpoint

“Don’t worry.” It’s a phrase we say to others to try to soothe them, and it’s a phrase that others say to us when we’re anxious about something. And isn’t it infuriating to hear it sometimes? It’s far easier said than done. How can we not worry about the important, basic, practical things in life – food, drink, clothing, somewhere to live, fuel bills? And what about those who are important to us – we worry when they are ill, when they are away from us; how could we not? And we worry about the future too – what’s going to be-come of us.

If we really are to stop worrying, how can we set about it?

We could perhaps tell ourselves that worrying about the future is pointless. Winston Churchill told the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened. Are we worrying about something that may never happen?

It’s wise advice to try to take each day at a time; looking at worries ahead is not helpful. As Corrie ten Boom, who sheltered Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Holland, wrote, ‘Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength... It is the interest you pay on trouble before it comes.’

Nor is it helpful to dwell endlessly on the past; we can find ourselves reliving pain without being able to resolve it.

John Newton, author of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’, wrote this: ‘We can manage if we will only take, each day, the burden appointed to it. But the load will be too heavy for us if we carry yesterday's burden over again today, and then add the burden of the morrow before we are required to bear it.’

But there is still the worrying about things that really are happening. We can’t help being concerned – it’s only human – and some things are desperately worrying. But ‘worry is like a rocking chair--it gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere.’ It does not, in itself, solve problems. Making plans to cope, crying on someone’s shoulder, cherishing the small things that go well, making time to acknowledge loss and distress – these are more positive ways of helping us to adjust to difficult situations.

As St Augustine, a man who knew about worrying, wrote in the 4th century:

Trust the past to God’s mercy,

the present to God’s love

and the future to God’s providence.

It’s worth a try.

Every blessing, Alex

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO SERVICE TIMES IN SEPTEMBER

Following a recent survey of all the congregation, the Vicar and PCC have decided that, with effect from Sunday 6th September, the main Parish Worship will start 30 minutes later, at 10.00am. This will give a little breathing space between the two morning services to allow Alex some preparation time, and so that the 8.30am congregation does not feel ‘rushed out’ after their service.

All other service times remain unchanged.

Coffee will follow the 10.00am service as normal in the Parish Centre.

Thanksgiving 2015 Ian Dayes

I would like to thank everybody for their generosity this spring.

In total we received some £11,000. This was made up roughly as follows: £2,000 in regular giving (usually direct debits etc), £7,000 in direct donations, and just under £2,000 gift-aid tax refund. We received significant donations from people who do not attend church but are happy to contribute to our work.

Thank you too to everybody who helped fill and deliver the envelopes; we made approximately £5 for each letter sent.

And a big thank you to Ian and his team from Alex and the PCC.

Editorial meanderings I caught an item on Radio 4 this morning about an elderly lady who was a code-breaker at Bletchley Park during the Second World War. She was interviewed concerning the general goings on at Bletchley at that time. She chatted generally about the work they were doing and said that most of the material was referred to as ’traffic’ and many forms and chits and messages were constantly rolled up and sent from department to department by means of an automatic system of tubes and handles.

This took me back to the time I joined the Royal Navy in nineteen hundred and how’s yer father, aged seventeen. Having trained as a telegraphist (radio operator) for a year, I was then sent to join an aircraft carrier named HMS Warrior which was going out to the Pacific for eight months. It was my first time at sea and on the second day we hit hurricane force 12 winds near the Azores which we were in for about three or four days. One minute the front of this huge ship would go up and up and up, and then plough down and down and down. I kept thinking "we're not coming up, we're not coming up", but up we would go again with this huge heave as if we were taking off. It's making me feel a bit queasy just remembering it . When we woke on the fifth day, the sea was like a mirror. I was to go through much bad weather at sea during my following eight years in the navy, but nothing as bad as that. On inspecting the ship afterwards, we were found to have a huge dent in the corner of the flight deck and about four more up the front of the bows. We had also lost lorries and equipment which had been lashed to the ship's flight deck. This meant, unfortunately, that we had to do an unscheduled detour and head for Pearl Harbour in Hawaii for a two-week repair period. Loads of surfing on Waikiki beach and being taken home and spoiled by American families. It was tough, but somebody had to do it.

Anyway I digress - very unusual for me. In the Warrior we had a main radio room on the upper deck which was very small and compact, and a much larger lower receiving room a few decks lower down in the ship. Messages received in the lower radio room could be sent to the upper room by means of (and here we go back to the Bletchley Park story) the pneumatic tube system and small round rubber buckets to put in rolled-up messages. When you slotted the buckets into the tube, you slid the tube cover down and pulled the handle; the air pressure was very fierce and would shoot these rubber buckets (about 4" x 2") up the tube to the small upper radio room. Having reached the destination, they would then shoot out of the tube and bounce around wildly inside a small net cage situated high in the corner of the radio room until settling down and being retrieved. One evening I was down in the lower receiving room with some mates and we decided to get about five of these little rubber buckets and

fill them with talcum powder! We then slotted them all into the tube and pulled the handle. They then shot up the tube to the small upper radio room and bounced around the cage with, I gather, spectacular results. I rang the upper radio room a split second after we pulled the handle and when the phone was picked up, I was greeted by coughing, spluttering, swearing and….well I won’t go on. This is, after all, a church and parish magazine...

Churchyard Working Party - 19th September Each year we arrange occasional working parties to tackle the work on the churchyard and car park. This means collecting litter, cutting hedges, trimming trees and clearing undergrowth. Tasks can be suited to the individual.

The next date is Saturday 19 September and getting the churchyard tidy for the winter is important.

We start at about 10 a.m. (or whenever you can get there) and continue for as long as there are people willing to help. All contributions are very welcome and there is no need for anyone to feel that they have to stay for hours. It is usually a good idea to bring a range of gardening tools and some rubbish bags and to wear gloves. If you would like to know more please contact either David Ackroyd 427 1568 or Richard Elliott 427 5981.

Organ Recital Mike Benford-Miller

St Thomas’ Church Mellor, Saturday 3rd October.

We are delighted to announce that Andrew Dean will be giving a recital on the Mellor organ in aid of church funds on Saturday 3rd October at 7.30pm.

Andrew will be playing the same programme of music that Dr Francis Jackson, organist of York Minster (1946-1982) and advisor on the planning of the Mellor organ, played at the inaugural recital in September 1977. We believe that this is the first time that this programme has been played in its entirety in 38 years.

Andrew is no stranger to Mellor, often being guest organist and accompanying the choir on its recent tour of Belgium. He is Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and continues to give recitals at home and abroad. Andrew has had a successful teaching career and has been Director of Choral Music at Leeds Metropolitan University, and was on the staff of Chetham’s School of Music and the Junior Department of the Royal Northern College of Music. The recital will be followed by drinks and nibbles in the Parish Centre. Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for children from the Parish Office 484 5079 or from Mike Benford-Miller 427 4311 or on Sundays after the morning service.

Baker's delight..... Jill Baker

Unbaked Milk Tart

1 can 397g condensed milk

800ml full-fat milk (three tins-full)

Pour the condensed milk and 2½ tins of milk into a saucepan and bring to a simmer.

Use the last ½ tin of milk to mix with the cornflour to a paste. Mix the paste into the milk mix and stir until thick and smooth. Remove from the heat.

Beat the eggs and slowly add the cooling milk mix. Return to heat for a few minutes , stirring until it forms a very thick custard . Remove from heat.

Calling all Kids Edale Youth Weekend 2015 - Friday 25th- Sunday 27th September

By now you will all no doubt be thoroughly bored of your phones and tablets, having been surgically attached to them all summer, and are desperate for a chance to socialise with some other humans. Or maybe you just haven’t eaten enough mine-

strone soup? Well, the time has come...it’s the Edale Weekend!

Every year we gather as many 8- to 17-year-olds as we can find and take over the Peak Centre in Edale for a relaxed weekend of games and activities (and cake). There are no other restrictions as to who can come, but there are a limited number of bunk beds, so first back with their forms, first served (cake, probably...). The cost this year will be £40 each, with all food and activities provided… except for the cake, which is your job!

Please contact the Parish Office and ask for an invitation letter and booking form if you’d like to come, or would like to know more about details of costs, programme of activities and kit list. They can also be found in church, or up at the Parish Centre, or from any of this year’s team. But finally a massive thank you to last year’s team, Janet Wilson, Helen Kennedy, Jules and Richard Elliot and a whole host of other congregation members and parents who have put so much time and effort into making Edale such a wonderful experience over many many years. So many memories, so much cake!

Looking forward to seeing you all there, Ash Shah, Clare Jackson, Emma Wilson, Jo Burrows, Mel Groocock, and Ric Benford-Miller

Moor End WI In July, Hilda’s Garden Legacy treated us to a most delightful outing to Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, a fascinating place and well worth a visit. The gardens were unusual and amazing and we were blessed with lovely weather. The Cheshire Federation WI celebrations at Gawsworth Hall were enjoyed by a number of our members who took several items for Moor End to display. Members at our July monthly meeting were vastly entertained by the Rev. Ian Mutton on “The Gospel according to Punch and Judy”. We had not realised there was such a wealth of background to the show.

“A must-have movie… a miracle of comedy and pathos” Daily Telegraph

Letter to the editor Dear Editor,

I recently read the attached letter in the Oldie magazine and it so completely expressed my own thoughts, I thought it worth

putting in Outlook. I hope other readers of Outlook find this as entertaining as I did. The letter is reproduced by kind permission of the Oldie.

Bob Norris.

"Sir, I haven’t got a computer but I was told about Facebook and Twitter and I am trying to make friends outside Facebook and Twitter while applying the same principles.

Every day I walk down the street telling passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel, what I did the night before and what I will do for the rest of the day. I then give them pictures of my wife, my daughter, my dog and of me gardening and on holiday, spending time by the pool. I also listen to their conversations, tell them I ‘like’ them and give my opinion on every subject that interests them…..whether it interests them or not. And it works. I already have four people following me; two police officers, a social worker and a psychiatrist."

Peter White, Derbyshire

Ann Hornsby Following the resignation of Ann we are currently advertising the post of Care-taker/Cleaner for the Parish Centre (see page 22). Ann has been with us for four years and we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her hard work and valuable contribution to the life of the Parish Centre during that time. I'm sure you will join the Management Committee in saying that she will be missed and that we wish her all the very best for the future.

There were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deer skin, one slept on an elk skin, and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin.

All three became pregnant. The first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This just goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

Mill Brow Bee Club - An update Lizzie McClelland

There are current discussions in the press about the use of neonicotinoid pesticides banned in the EU in 2013 due to concerns about the nerve agents causing significant harm to bees. The UK Government has recently lifted the ban for farmers to use neonictinoids in certain parts of the UK. The pesticide is used mainly

for rape seed growing; rape seed is also a favourite crop for bees. Although this pesticide does not pose a risk to our bees in Mill Brow it highlights the role of bees as pollinators in our food chain and the delicate balance that our farmers are asked to achieve. We will be keeping a close eye on how this issue evolves and its potential effect on the British countryside.

Our bees seem to be okay although, like us, they are struggling with the typical British summer. They are also very patient and placid bees, tolerating several gawping faces staring at them every Sunday with lots of scratching of heads and pondering as we continue on the steep learning curve of bee-keeping! We don't think there will be Mill Brow honey being sold over the bar of the Hare & Hounds this summer but as we've all agreed 'we're in for the long haul'. We have just had a successful photo shoot with Diane from the Marple Review - who knew our bees would reach such fame? It was a lovely community morning standing around chatting about all things bees and a few new faces were able to complete an inspection of our colony. The whole point of setting up the bee club was to get the community involved. With bees having a two-mile flight radius from their hive there is a possibility of our bees visiting many Mellor gardens. Please think about enticing them into your garden with bee-friendly plants. If you want to get involved or visit, email [email protected]. We usually meet every Sunday morning during summer and early autumn, weather permitting. Also, we're still in need of a small shed in reasonable condition - if you know of one going spare, please let us know.

Mellor Church Golf Fun Day Please join us on Sunday 13th September at Mellor and Townscliffe Golf Club.

Tee-off is at 1.30 pm. The golf match is for any-one over the age of 12, beginners as well as experienced players, and is followed by a two-course buffet in the evening for church and choir members, friends, families and players. The cost includes a small charge for funds for the church choir. Golf is £20 and the buffet £16 for adults

(half-price for children). Please contact Mike Benford-Miller, 20 Fernwood, Marple Bridge on 427 4311 or [email protected]

Choir Tour to Belgium August 2015 Richard Benford-Miller At approximately 6.30am a coach quietly slipped out of Mellor en route to Flanders, well as quietly as you can with 19 trebles, 9 lay clerks, 4 carers, 1 organist, 6 parents, 2 groupies, 2 outstanding drivers and of course Jonny! The journey to Dover, despite all the news headlines, was remarkably smooth and event-free apart from some singing along to the Sound of Music.

We arrived in a small village called Lo in West Flanders, not far from Ypres, and found our base for the tour, the Hotel Oude Abdij (Old Abbey), appropriately named for such a group as ours. After sorting rooms and settling in, the lay clerks discovered a well-stocked bar with a large selection of fine Belgian beers and so normal choir service resumed.

Our first day we headed out to Tyne Cot Cemetery and spent time wandering through the graves of the fallen. We all went in search of the names of two of Mellor's sons who are remembered on the wall that is the backdrop to the cemetery. We then headed to Ypres for lunch and our first concert in the Cathedral of St Martin, passing under the Menin Gate. While most of us headed into the beautiful town for a leisurely lunch our esteemed organist Andrew Dean, Jonny and three organ scholars (Ben, Emily and Elsa) were left locked in the Cathedral to play the organ. At three o'clock we began our first concert in Belgium.

On Thursday we headed on the long trek to Brussels for an afternoon engagement in the impressive Cathedral. On Friday morning we headed to the beautiful city of Bruges, where the youngsters had a canal tour and lunch. The rest of us had a wander around a very beautiful place, a leisurely mid-morning coffee and lunch on the run as we had an engagement in Ghent. The choir arrived at the overwhelming Ghent Cathedral in time for a very quick rehearsal in an awesome space, followed by, for me, one of the best performances our choir has ever done.

Sunday afternoon we headed to Ypres and choral evensong at St George's Memorial Church followed by the highlight of the Tour, singing two pieces at the Menin Gate, Last Post Ceremony. George and Alex, our youngest choristers on tour, placed a wreath in memory of those from our Parish who gave their lives in the First World War (see the front cover), while Eve Goldspink sang the first verse of Crimond solo, before being joined by the rest of us. We finished our short stint with Parry's "There is an Old Belief". It was a very moving and emotional time for all of us and an honour to share in something so special.

The choir returned to Mellor on Monday 10th August about 7.30pm as quietly as they left, which is to say not that quietly, and a good time was had by all. My personal thanks to all involved for such a great trip.

Beware the epitaph Last summer, pottering round Dumfries and Galloway, we found ourselves in the graveyard of a typically sandstone Presbyterian church. One monolith caught my eye. The epitaph indicated that the deceased had been an important member of the local Temperance Society, and used the phrase ‘went before he had finished’. Perhaps in local language usage this wording is normal; for us, we expected to find a half-painted wall round the corner.

There is a whole spectrum of epitaph; the worthy, the wordy, the factual, and the unclassifiable…

Some epitaphs beg more information – ‘George Johnson, hanged by mistake’. Or this one – ‘Capt. Joseph Talcott, who was casually drowned in the Scungamug River…’. Casually? And another one, for Brigham Young - ‘Born on this spot in 1802, a man of much courage and superb equipment’. A little more attention to syntax and punctuation would have improved the meaning here – ‘Erected to the memory of John McFarlane drowned in the waters of the Leith by a few affectionate friends’.

The need to be sparse with words leads to some bizarre statements - ‘Donald Robertson...to all appearance a sincere Christian..’. From Kilkeel, Co. Down – ‘Had he lived he would have been buried here’. And from a churchyard in Plymouth – ‘Here lies the body of Thomas Vernon, the only surviving son of Admiral Vernon’.

Perhaps the safest thing is to write your own epitaph, like W.C.Fields – ‘I would rather be living in Philadelphia’.

Editor’s welcome I just felt I should welcome those intellectually discerning readers who have decided to join the ranks of Outlook subscribers in recent months or even over the past year or so. I know that Mrs Editor, being one of Outlook's 'foot soldiers', has approached a few unsuspecting newcomers or oldcomers on her round. These lucky people, who might have been somewhat reticent or unfamiliar with Mellor and Ludworth’s biggest grossing magazine with the title of Outlook, have now joined us and have realised their lives will never be the same again.

I also hope however that, having been dazzled by the wit, brilliance and usefulness of the content, they will feel it is worth every penny. Welcome, dear friends.

And can I again remind those people who read the magazine at mum and dad's or Auntie Doris and Uncle Wilfred's to contact their local Outlook representative and order a regular copy of their own. I mean, come on, this is the price, annually, of two coffees and a sticky cake or a pint and a half of Robbies for goodness sake - for a year's supply of the magazine everyone is talking about.

Get your priorities right. Angela Merkel and Barack Obama love it. The editor's wit and wisdom must be worth 10 pence a week. But then, again, maybe not.

Mellor War Memorial Project Tom Howling

One hundred years ago, over the summer of 1915, Mellor lost its first two casualties of the First World War. James Edward Withers, aged 23, was killed in action on 28th June 1915 and Charles Lingard Davidson, aged 29, was killed in action on 6th August 1915. Both of these men were lost not on the Western Front which had by 1915 already reached stalemate, but on the far side of the Mediterranean in the Gallipoli campaign.

The Turkish-held Dardanelles channel provided a link between the Aegean and the Black Sea. It was a vital strategic objective for the Allies as its closure prevented supplies being moved through the Mediterranean to and from Russia. A campaign was promoted by First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill to secure the channel and also, by reaching Constantinople, remove Turkey from the war. When British, French, Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula they faced a tenacious and motivated enemy who had dug in well following an abortive Allied navy raid at the start of the year.

The cost of this campaign was huge. Out of the 480,000 Allied troops that took part, 252,000 ended up being casualties, with 48,000 dead. On the Turkish side it is estimated that there were 250,000 casualties with 87,000 dead. The day of the initial landings, 25th April, became the focus of commemoration for Australian and New Zealand service personnel, with ANZAC Day still marked each year around the world.

Amazing Grace Anon

As a bagpiper, I am sometimes engaged to play at various ceremonies and special occasions. For example, I was recently asked by a funeral director to play at the graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the wilds of the Scottish borders.

As I was not familiar with the area, I got lost and finally arrived an hour late. I was very dismayed to find that the funeral was over and the hearse had gone and no-one but the grave-diggers was left. They sat eating their lunch. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and saw that the vault lid was already in place.

I didn't know what to do but felt I should do something, particularly as I felt so bad about being late and missing the funeral. So I fired up the bagpipes and started to play 'Amazing Grace' with an immense heartfelt sincerity. I felt I had let this man down and that I owed him something special so I played out my heart and soul for this man who had no family and no friends. I played like I've never played before. The grave-diggers had put down their lunches and had gathered round to listen. As I played, I noticed they had began to cry, which started me off. All through 'Amazing Grace' we all stood there crying. Tears were rolling down our faces. It was very emotional and I don't know how I got through it.

When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and headed for my car. As I opened my car door, I heard one of the grave-diggers say to the other, "I've never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Postscript to the Church Fête and Bands on the Hill Kareen Dayes

Two very complimentary articles regarding the Church Fête and Bands on the Hill appeared in last month's Outlook. However, I felt there was something missing – a huge thank you and congratulations to Beverley Williams plus her hard-working team!

Together they put in many hours of effort in organising and designing the numerous factors which go into making this such a successful day. Yes, the weather does play a large part in these type of events, however all the contingency plans were already in place should the conditions have turned out less favourable.

So, from the 'backroom boys' to the 'front of house', programme designers, cake-makers, bar crew and stall holders etc. etc. - well done! Let us hope, as one contributor said, for another 'fantastic family day out' next year and yet more people make it a 'permanent fixture in their calendars'.

Captain Ken Owen, Freeman of the City of London (and of Rowarth) ‘A life on the ocean wave’ – it’s difficult to achieve now with today’s small crews on container ships and more home-leave given, but one man who has spent 53 years largely at sea lives right here in Rowarth. Captain Ken Owen’s distinguished service was recognised on 17th April when, as a Citizen and Master Mariner of London, he was given the Freedom of the City.

Ken’s whole career was based on the skill of carrying diverse cargoes and keeping them in good condition. Over the years his ships carried commodities such as tea, hemp, cocoa, cotton and palm oil across the world, often for months, keeping them in prime condition. Ken has also carried snakes, crocodiles and elephants. When his ship once went through the Panama Canal with a cargo of lions and bears, the inspecting authorities quickly decided to check only ‘animals with cloven hooves’ and waved Ken’s ship through hurriedly.

Ken was educated at Ludworth School and King’s School Macclesfield. He spent much of his childhood at the Roman Lakes, visited by thousands of people each year, helping out at the boating lake with its rowing boats, sailing dinghies and small motor boats. Here, and at the Marple Sea Scouts, Ken learned about boating first-hand.

Aged just 17, Ken then joined Alfred Holt of Liverpool on the Blue Funnel Fleet, running mostly to China. He was an Indentured Apprentice (but known as a Midshipman) and still attends reunions of his peers. This Fleet then had 100 ships, which took cargo to the Far East, Australia and round the world via the USA. Voyages could last for up to a year, not least because of the time needed to unload specialist cargoes that required skilled handling.

Luckily Ken’s feet touched ground long enough for him to marry Allwyn. They met at Marple Cricket Club, which was lucky considering that neither of them plays cricket.

Allwyn stayed at home and raised the family while Ken saw the world, visiting Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Australia and the USA often. Memorably, Allwyn and the children once joined him on a 3-month sea trip to Japan.

Ken rose through the ranks, becoming a Master and taking command of his own ship. He recalls visiting China during the Cultural Revolution, when it was essential to carry Chairman Mao’s ‘Little Red Book’ at all times on pain of arrest. Unlike many of his peers, Ken did not exchange a ship for a desk on reaching the top of his career. In fact, he had only one year’s work ashore, in the City of

Children’s Page Give and Take

Every year we have a harvest festival in our schools and churches. Do you know why we do this? September is the time when all the crops are being harvested and our harvest festival is a celebration of the food which has been grown.

Here is the story of what might have been the first harvest festival. On the coast of North Cornwall is a small village called Morwenstow. There are high cliffs and huge jagged rocks and this part of the coast is famous for shipwrecks. In the past the people of the village looked forward to storms because if a ship was wrecked then they could steal its cargo. The villagers always seemed to be taking rather than giving! Their vicar, Reverend Hawker, believed that, when plants and crops grew, it was a gift from God and we should say thank you. So in 1843 he ‘invented’ the first celebration of a harvest festival. By doing this the people of the village began to learn that giving was more important than taking.

This was all a long time ago, but new ideas are happening again. In 2013 the first National Harvest Service was held in Westminster Abbey. This was the first harvest festival in the Abbey for nearly 50 years. A special torch was made by Andy Hall, a blacksmith from Devon. It is ‘The Love British Food Harvest Torch’ and is a very special sculpture which moves from one city to another rather like the Olympic torch did. At the moment it is in Birmingham Cathedral.

This year there are three special services in cathedrals in Canterbury, Lincoln and Ripon. The title is ‘Bring home the harvest’. After the services, the harvest boxes are loaded onto a horse–drawn cart and taken to a local food bank.

So what is a food bank? Food banks give at least 3 days of emergency food and support to people who need help and who may be hungry. All the food is donated.

The new harvest ideas include a special website www.aharvestnearyou.com to help us all to think more about the food we eat and to remember to give thanks.

There will certainly be a ‘harvest near you’ in Mellor Church on Sunday 11th October at 10am. Why not come along?

Sister-in-law Ed.

I thought I would share with my readers the knowledge that my sister-in-law, Heather, Mrs Editor’s sister, came to stay with us for a few days during the fête. She loves Mellor church fête and has been a few times before. She is now an honorary member of the fête team. She is very jolly and good company, one of four Jowett sisters all baptised in Mellor church, whose family have their origins in Mellor. She had many childhood visits to her grandma who lived in the Manor House on Longhurst Lane so she is no stranger to the area. Heather now lives in Broadstairs and is a member of a large, and very well attended, church down there. However, she says that there is a lovely atmosphere among the inmates at Mellor church and she loves her visits.

But what is most important, dear readers, is that she sat at our table drinking tea one morning and guffawing at our parish magazine. I honestly don’t think it was out of politeness or an attempt to get the B&B rate we charged for her stay reduced. She thought it was an excellent magazine - much funnier and more interesting than theirs which goes to three big churches. She has taken some back copies of Outlook to give them ideas. She tried head-hunting me as editor but I said "No way. My readership may not be up to much but I'm all they've got and they need me." Just thought I'd modestly drop this item in to show you how lucky you are...

London where he worked as a Container Planner.

Having spent 30 years in cargo liners, Ken eventually became a ship’s captain for SeaLand, commanding huge container ships going to the Far East at an age when most people are looking to retirement.

So now Ken is a Freeman of the City of London, free to drive sheep across London Bridge toll-free and also free from being press-ganged to serve in the Royal Navy. He has received a second Little Red Book – ‘Rules for the Conduct of Life’ for Freemen.

Ken joins many other illustrious Freeman since the first one in 1237 - people at the top of their profession and Honorary Freemen too (including Nelson, Winston Churchill and, more recently, Nelson Mandela and J K Rowling). Ken is also now a Livery Member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners – the top accolade – and last year was awarded International Shipmaster of the Year, a global award.

Ken’s crowning achievement must however be becoming the first Freeman of Rowarth – and he has the certificate to prove it! We offer him our warmest congratulations.

Prayer for the Month

Thought for the Month

Lord, open our lips, and our mouth shall declare your praise. Lord, open our eyes, and our seeing shall behold your glory.

Lord, open our hearts, and our feeling shall know your love. Lord, open our minds, and our thinking shall discover your wonders.

Lord, open our hands, and our giving shall show your generosity. Lord, open our lives, and our living shall declare your presence.

David Adam: ‘Tides and Seasons’

Science, technology, the free market and the liberal democratic state have enabled us to reach unprecedented achievements in knowledge, freedom, life expectancy and affluence. They are among the greatest achievements of human civilisation and are to be defended and cherished. But they do not and cannot answer the three questions every reflective individual will ask at some time in his or her life: Who am I? Why am I here? How then shall I live? These are questions to which an answer is prescriptive not descriptive, substantive not procedural. The result is that the twenty-first century has left us with a maximum of choice and a minimum of meaning.

Religion has returned because it is hard to live without meaning. That is why no society has survived for long without either a religion or a substitute for religion. The religion that has returned is not the gentle, quietist eirenic and ecumenical form that, in the West, we had increasingly come to expect. Instead it is religion at its most adversarial and aggressive, prepared to do battle with the enemies of the Lord, bring the apocalypse, end the reign of decadence and win the final victory for God, truth and submission to the divine will.

Not all anti-modern religion is violent. Undeniably, though, the greatest threat to freedom in the post-modern world is radical, politicised religion. It is the face of altruistic evil in our time.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: the introduction to ‘Not in God’s Name’ (published in June 2015)

Bill Murray Ed. I just happened to pick up a copy of a national newspaper a few days ago. Not one I subscribe to but maybe some Outlook readers do and may have seen this quote. However, for those who haven’t, I found it quite amusing. It is by the actor, Bill Murray.

“A few decades ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope and no Jobs. Please don’t let Kevin Bacon die.”
