Mass Intentions … Mass intentions may be for the living and the de-parted, with a + designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10 suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a name’s inclusion in these prayers. To schedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

Baptism … Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. God-parents and Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions are given every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call Jean in the parish office (see contacts, oppo-site page) to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents for baptismal prep.

Prayers of the Faithful ….If you would like a name included in our Prayers of the Faithful for the sick, please call the Parish Office.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and anytime by ap-pointment.

Matrimony...pre-registration required one year in advance; marriage preparation course is required.

Anointing… 1st weekend of the month following each Mass. For other requests, please contact the office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Of-fice to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound, hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of the pastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office (see contacts, page 2).

At the end of his final meeting as member of the Board of Saint Francis Regional Medical Center, Father Paul and I were catching up on mu-tual acquaintances from my days at the Cathedral of Saint Paul.

As conversations go, the topics shifted – from people, to the church and to the topic of leav-ing a legacy. You see, Father Paul was interested how, in my career in institutional fundrais-ing, I helped guide peoples thinking about leaving a leg-acy, or estate gift.

In particular for the church, the most important and deeply rooted non-profit in anyone’s life.

As I thought about his ques-tions and comments, I found myself going through my men-tal checklist of the many ways people can make a legacy gift – wills (bequests), annuities, life insur-ance, and trusts to mention just a few.

Then it struck me I was thinking about the tools of legacy giving and not focusing on the more important questions. Like why should a legacy gift be given and to whom should the gift be left to. Here are six key things to consider in answering the questions.

1. Plan ahead. Think about the things that have been important to you, your spouse, and your family. Look at your assets and con-sider what you have currently and what you anticipate you will need to live out your days on (be sure to think about catastrophic illness).

2. Identify who you might want to leave something to. It could be your spouse, children, and other family members, key individuals who have made a difference in your life, your church, school, com-munity or the causes you have passion for.

3. Prioritize. Look at the funds you have available and consider what you want to accomplish with your giving and what are your top two or three giving priorities.

4. Communicate. Once you have decided on your priorities make sure you communicate your choices with the rest of your family.

5. Write it down. For most people writing it down means a will and could mean the cost of an attorney. In general, it is money well spent, but there are also resources around to help with writing a will and there a number of templates available on the web. For more complex types of estate giving, use the services of a reputa-ble professional – an estate attorney, financial planner, or, de-pending on the charitable organization you might be inter-ested in using one of their fund development professional. Check with your insurance carrier because they may have access to people who can help you with the more complex insurance es-tate opportunities.

6. Remember, if you don’t decide what to do with the assets of your estate, the government will help make that decision for you and it may not be what you want.

Professionals in estate planning would have a more detailed set of

questions and checklist. I have found you get to the right place when you think of these six steps.

Recently, a family I know shared with me the story of how they helped the wife’s Mom with home hospice care for her Dad.

Dad was a part of Tom Bro-kaw’s Greatest General having grown up during the depres-sion, served in World War II, raised a family, served his community as a police officer and generally help frame and build America post World War II. To Dad, and most of his generation, family and faith were the key ingredients of his successful life.

During those last few months, weeks and days the impor-tance of faith in his life was

ever visible. Each day he would ask someone to pray with him as he recited the Lord’s Prayer or said the Rosary. Often one of the local or retired Priests would visit Dad not only to pray with him but to help Mom understand better what was happening and what would happen once Dad passed away.

Faith, the church and the caring and compassion of the priests, reli-gious sisters and parish pastoral care ministers were a world of comfort for the family.

After Dad passed away, it became very clear the importance of faith in his life. In his will he left the largest portion of his estate to his wife and children, but also he specifically made a provision for the church … his parish church.

He had planned ahead to include the church because he knew , in the end, the church might be overlooked because , after all , they were doing what they were supposed to do.

He also knew that his children, while faithful, were busy and not as involved in the church as he was. Dad knew he would be the one re-sponsible for making sure the church was acknowledged in his estate for the important role it played in his life. Dad planned ahead, priori-tized, communicated to the family his desire to give to the church and wrote it down.

Hang Out with Us

after the 6.1.5 Mass!

Why should the fun end after the 6.1.5 Mass is over? On 2nd Sundays this Summer, it won’t! On July 10 and August 14, come and hang out with us after the 6.1.5 Mass and get to know those you worship with! Meet us outside in front of the church (unless it is raining—then St. Francis Hall) and we’ll have cookies and lemonade to further your enjoyment!

Chores Made Easy Behavioral consultants can at-test to seeing two year olds ac-tually doing age appropriate chores.

How could this happen?

First, the children were invited to help a little bit here and there on numerous occasions prior to family events. The invi-tations were less about working and more about joining the fun, because the two-year-olds’ parents were encouraged to make the work fun.

Then they showed the kids how to do it, and helped them to do it the first time.

When the kids did it, their parents made a big deal out of it … with a photo, for example.

Then the children went on to set the table exactly as shown, all by themselves.

Parents gave exuberant affirmation, "Wow, _____! You're doing one of the things God built you to do! Do you feel good about that?"

"Yah!" The invariably said with a smile.

"Give me five!" the parents said, and slapped hands with a big smile.

The two-year-olds then cleared the dishes the same way. This chore is now a frequent part of the children’s routine at dinner time.

With much less hoopla, they often help set the table and clear the dishes. They also clean up toys, and clothes, having learned the same way.

This approach works with most chores, and with kids of all ages.

Certainly, what is begun early on will only build with age.

To break this down into steps:

1. Be an example of fun while working.

2. Make a fun invitation to join the chore.

3. Give a realistic, concrete demonstration of what you want done.

4. Celebrate by giving enthusiastic praise for the hard work not for the "good job."

5. Teach the child that helping others is something God built us to do: We are God's workmanship, created to do good works (Eph 2:10).

6. Stay relaxed and make it fun.

7. Repeat with any chore you wish to train your child to do.

A member of the Chaska community came up to me and thanked the parish community for honoring Fr. Conran Schneider, OFM, on his 60th anniversary as a priest-servant on June 25th.

Many of those years outside of Carver County. But a significant number within "The Valley."

It was her opinion that Fr. Conran had not really been adequately thanked before.

I think she meant thanked “so publicly.”

Without a doubt, if anyone is deserving of a church's, of a city's, of a county's public ap-preciation, it is Fr. Conran.

In spite of being in his 80s, he's been the Eveready Bunny of pastoral care in our re-gion. In hospitals, nursing homes, senior housing, hospices, wakes, and homes ... regardless of religious or denominational affiliation.

He shares the single-minded focus of his community's founder, St. Francis: a self-emptying love of service to everyone, espe-cially those in need.

If you would like to add your voice of appre-ciation, I encourage you to write to the Chaska Herald and/or send a note of thanks to him via Guardian Angels Church's pas-toral care minister: Jean Rief, Guardian An-gels Church, 215 West Second Street, Chaska, MN.

Jean will make sure our community's lone remaining Franciscan receives your thoughts of appreciation.

Have you changed your phone num-ber or e-mail address? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all in-cluded in your membership record? If you do not wish to have your information published in the 2011 Guidebook Directory, please notify Miguel in the Par-ish Office as soon as possible. If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you wish to have your family informa-tion published.
