315 3 Julie/July 2015 6 VOLKSRUST - Eight months have passed since November 2014 when the body of the late Advocate Yandisa Marongo (47) was found next to the Leandra Road, between Standerton and Leandra, with a gunshot to the head. The death of the former head of legal services at Lekwa Municipality sent shockwaves through the community of Standerton. Mr Marongo was placed on suspension, facing a disciplinary hearing from Lekwa Local Municipality before he was murdered. His death has left an element of suspicion due to the fact that he did not pitch for his scheduled hearing which was to be held at the municipality just a week before his death. The investigating officer, Detective Constable Duma Mkhwanazi of Charl Cilliers Police, reported that Mr Marongo’s vehicle, a blue Audi A4 and cellphone were missing from the scene. A Police source reported that a special police task team arrested a 27-year-old man driving the deceased’s car in Volksrust on Friday, 19 June 2015. It is alleged that Mr Marongo’s blue Audi has been monitored by Police in the streets of Volksrust for a long time. The vehicle is said to have been confiscated by Police and kept in a safe place while investigation is continuing. Although police have confirmed the recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of the suspect, they could not divulge more information due to the sensitivity of the case. However Cosmos News is in possession of the name of the suspect. A source says that the suspect, who is reported to originate from Volksrust, is well known in Standerton. It has been confirmed that he appeared in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 June. He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and remanded into custody while the investigation continues. He is being detained at an undisclosed location awaiting his second court appearance on the 8 th of July. Unconfirmed reports say that Police are not ruling out more arrests in the case. VOLKSRUST - Eight months have passed since November 2014 when the body of the late Advocate Yandisa Marongo (47) was found next to the Leandra Road, between Standerton and Leandra, with a gunshot to the head.

The death of the former head of legal services at Lekwa Municipality sent shockwaves through the community of Standerton. Mr Marongo was placed on suspension, facing a disciplinary hearing from Lekwa Local Municipality before he was murdered. Although police have confirmed the recovery of the vehicle and the arrest of the suspect, they could not

divulge more information due to the sensitivity of the case.

JD

STANDERTON - A 46-year-old woman and her daughter (28) from Zimbabwe were arrested by Police on Friday morning, 26 June, after they were found in possession of stolen goods.

The goods were allegedly stolen from their employers where they were working as domestic workers for families in Kosmos Park. A 35-year-old employer was shocked and disappointed to discover that the woman, who has been with the family for the last three years, could find the courage to steal children’s clothes where she was treated as a member of the family. The woman had packed her bags heading for Zimbabwe to visit her family after she was paid a month’s salary in advance and some extra money for traveling. The kind-hearted employers also gave her clothes for her children back in Zimbabwe.

The discovery of the theft was made on Friday morning just before the woman was taken to the Johannesburg-bound taxi.

The drama started when the employer realised that some of the children’s clothes are missing. They were accompanied by Police to the young woman’s home where they retrieved stolen goods.

The Police then searched the mother’s bags where they also discovered stolen clothes. The two were arrested on the spot and taken into custody.

The 46-year-old woman was charged with theft, while her daughter was charged with theft and for being illegal in the country.

Lieutenant Nhlabathi sends a warning to employers to verify the documents of their employees with the Department of Home Affairs. DM

STANDERTON - Police found an abandoned vehicle next to the Vaal River on Monday, 22 June. The registration of the vehicle was circulated and later it was established that it belonged to a local man from Sakhile. When Police contacted the family about his whereabouts, the family told them that the man was reported missing at Sakhile Police Station on Saturday the 20th of June.

The man’s Fiat was towed to the police station for safekeeping while his disappearance was being investigated. On Tuesday, 23 June, Police received a call at 10:00 from a member of the community

claiming that young boys, who played in the veld, discovered a body floating in the river close to the Rooikoppen Road after they first found clothes along the banks of the river before they saw the body.

When Police arrived at the scene they found clothes, cash and a cellphone all on one place on the bank of the river.

The body of Mr TF Tsotetsi (45) was retrieved from the river. Lieutenant Johannes Nhlabathi said that there were no visible injuries to the decease’s body and Police are baffled how the man ended up in the river. An inquiry into his death is being conducted. DM

STANDERTON - Eskom’s Tutuka Power Station was brought to a standstill for a few hours last week Thursday morning before workers could commence their work. The delay was caused by approximately 50 taxi’s who blocked the road leading to the western and eastern gates leading to the plant.

Standerton Taxi Association and other affiliates belonging to Lekwa Business Forum blocked the road to express their anger toward Eskom’s management for failing to solve an ongoing dispute about transport arrangements where scores of minibus taxis and buses as far as Gauteng, North West and Limpopo provinces are transporting contract workers to and from work instead of utilising the local minibuses and buses to benefit the local economy. According to the representatives from various representatives in the Lekwa Business Forum such as SANCO, and the Standerton Taxi Association, engaged with Eskom’s management who also formed part of the forum from January 2015.

At a meeting that was held on Wednesday, 24 June, Eskom did not discuss the transport issue, which angered the forum members, particularly the local taxi association who felt that management did not take the issue of transport seriously. This led to the decision to block all roads leading to Tutuka Power Station. As early as 05:00 on Thursday minibus taxis barricaded access to the plant which led to a complete halt.

Police were called in, but their presence could not change the situation. The standoff was peaceful and orderly according to the police, but the taxi operators remained resolute that no vehicle carrying workers into the plant will be allowed to pass through. Workers that left their transport, walking to the entrance were not prevented by the protestors.

It is reported that at about 07:30 Eskom’s management sent a word to the Taxi Association leadership through the Police to allow vehicles to pass through. The message was well received by the taxi operators and subsequent to that the roadblock was suspended. All vehicles were free to move into the plant. After 09:00 Eskom’s management allegedly changed their tune and refused to meet with the leadership of the taxis and the Business Forum. The taxi operators felt betrayed by Eskom and anger was building up.

Mr Nicholas Selepe of SANCO kept the hopes of his colleagues alive after he made a call to Eskom’s head office to engage with their top management regarding the blockade. At 10:00 Tutuka Power Station’s Manager, Mr Ryno Lacock sent out a message through the Police that he is prepared to come down and meet with three delegates for discussion. On his arrival, in the presence of Police Mr Lacock met with three representatives. The Taxi Association’s Chairperson Mr MI Mbonani, Deputy Chairperson, Mr Mphahlela, and SANCO Chairperson Mr Nicholas Selepe.

After long deliberations all parties agreed to go back to the negotiation table with the date to be finalised in due course. Mr Mbonani confirmed that all parties have agreed on further engagements and the immediate suspension of the blockage. DM

sus-mense.

Carte blanche - Iemand carte blanche gee.

jy wil. Cul-de-sac – In ’n cul de sak

loop. In ’n valstrik inloop.

PROVINCIAL - This month, the country is celebrating Youth Month in remembrance of the youth of 1976 who fought bravely against the apartheid regime. South Africans, and the youth in particular, have come a long way since then and yes, we certainly are in a better place today than we were 21 years ago but our hard earned democracy is not without its challenges. Today, South Africans are confronted with the triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment.

According to Statistics South Africa, the unemployment rate rose to 26,4 % in the first quarter of this year meaning that , of the nearly 36-million employable people, only 15,5-million are currently employed, 5,5 million are not working and the rest are not economically active. In Mpumalanga, the picture is even bleaker with the unemployment rate increasing from 26.6% in the last quarter of 2014 to 28.4% in the first quarter of 2015.

The Trade, Agriculture and Mining sectors, three of Mpumalanga’s top job producers have shed 12 000, 11 000 and 20 000 jobs respectively. These numbers force me to ask the question, where will today’s youth find employment?

For a long time, the DA has championed the implementation of the Youth Wage Subsidy as an incentive for business owners to employ young people, giving them the skills and experience needed to contribute to the country’s economy. The government responded by implementing the Employment Tax Incentive (ETI), a watered-down version of the Youth Wage subsidy, hoping that it would promote employment for young people and create jobs in special economic zones once the relevant legislation had been promulgated. In order to properly address youth unemployment, the government must create real incentives for the private sector to take on first time-employees and get more involved in skills development and training.

Not only do we need strong policies to bring about a significant decrease in youth unemployment, but the government must ensure that those tasked with the implementation of these polices have the capacity to plan, organise, lead and control the entire process. Another way the government can address youth unemployment is to focus its attention to the country’s slow economic growth rate by creating an environment for businesses to thrive. This will allow young people who have gained the skills and experience through the proper implementation of the Youth Wage Subsidy to create their own employment opportunities.

Across the province, it is becoming all too common to see educated young people sitting at home with their qualifications because it is extremely difficult for them to find employment.

In municipalities that are further away from economic hubs like Mbombela and eMalahleni, the youth have become despondent because for them it is a struggle to access information on higher education or alternative job opportunities. Albert Luthuli, Nkomazi, Bushbuckridge, Thembisile Hani and Dr JS Moroka municipalities don’t only struggle with internet access but also network problems which further puts the youth in those areas at a disadvantage.

Things that we take for granted like internet access or university enrolment forms are not easily accessible in most rural areas. This only proves how wide the gap still is between urban and rural youth, which shows the levels of inequality. This cannot be the legacy that is attributed to the youth of 2015.

As Youth Month draws to a close, we owe it to the youth to get them employed through finding workable solutions to youth unemployment. Media statement by Provincial leader James Masango, MP

The School Governing Body says that they are extremely thankful to the conductor, Mr MM Hlatshwayo who devoted his time in training the choir for preparation for every level of competition.

They will now represent Mpumalanga at national level in the competition. The nation-al level competition took place on 30 June at the Randburg Rhema Church in Gauteng. JD

DK

ERMELO - Ligbron Academy of Technolo-gy hosted their annual senior English oratory competition on 27 May and the pupils once again battled things out for a place to attend the inter high competition in August. Accord-ing to the school, the three judges – Wendy Stapelberg, Rethia Naudé and Herman Roodt – were blown away by the local talent.

After many a good chuckle and thoughtful presentation of opinions, the first place was taken by Ebrahim Desai who argued convinc-ingly that “A good leader follows.” Second place went to Raeesah Bhagalia who held that “A positive attitude can change the world,”

while Umoja Motswege raked in third place with the same topic.

Fatima Saloojee took fourth place with her argument that “Load shedding has a positive influence on the family unit” and Maryke le Roux argued her way to the fifth place with her contention that “TV is the reason why children do not read anymore.” But, as usual, the unprepared speeches were the deciding factor and the pupils eagerly showed off their ability to evoke an opinion.

Keep an eye on Cosmos News in August for the result of the prestigious inter high competition. DK

NATIONAL – The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has been hard at work ensuring that a blood shortage is avoided. However, with all efforts in place it seems the cold weather is keeping our donors away. Traditionally, the winter months are a difficult time due to schools and universities busy with exams and then the school holidays commencing as well as increase with illnesses such as the flu virus that has a great impact on blood collection. This places SANBS under immense pressure to collect safe and good quality blood products.

“SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival.” It

is with only the help of the selfless blood donors that we will be able to ensure that patients who are reliant on blood transfusions will be able to receive it. SANBS is appealing to people, particularly to our regular donors to not miss out on their next donation date and to other members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to become a blood donor, to help boost supplies by committing to donating blood. Minimum blood donor requirements: Ages between 16 and 65 years, weigh 50kg or more, good health, lead a sexually safe lifestyle. SANBS, a non-profit organisation, urges people who meet the minimum requirements to give the gift of life by becoming regular donors. Contact 0800 11 90 31 to find the nearest fixed donor site.

South Africa is World ChampionsSTANDERTON - Four karatekas from the Three Swords Dojo in Standerton took part in the fifth WJKA (World Japan Karate Association) world championship that took place from 19 to 21 June in Vlissingen, Netherlands. These four karatekas formed part of the 68 Shotokan karatekas that qualified to represent South Africa, which they did with pride and honor.

Fourteen countries competed for the sought after title of World Champions, a title that has bragging rights for two years. The countries were Austria, Belgium, Congo, Germany, India, Lithuania, Nigeria, Netherlands, Russia, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the USA and of course, South Africa. South Africa obtained 19 gold medals, 29 silver medals and 20 bronze medals and was appointed the overall WJKA World Champions.

Several beach training sessions were held by the SA team, as well as a grueling gashuku (intense training) under Shihan’s Jan Knobel 9th Dan, John Turnbull 8th Dan and Kevin Thurlow 7th Dan. Even though the championship was held under traditional karate rules, which means that only mouth guards for competitors over 12 years are allowed, no serious injuries occurred. The occasional black eye and one or two knock-outs were treated, but these bruises were proudly displayed afterwards.

Reghard Burger, one of the junior competitors from Standerton, fought hard in the team kumite-division and was awarded a gold medal afterwards. Reney Raven took part in the veteran women’s division (35-years and older, black belt) and after some exhausting elimination heats, she landed in the final round and achieved a well-deserved fourth place. Melony Degenaar was all geared up to partake in the disability division, but as there was no contestants in her division, she was unable to compete. The instructor of the Standerton dojo, Jannie Degenaar was not only appointed as referee in the tournament, but also took part in the veteran’s division (40-years and older, black belt) and had to bow in the semifinal round and came home with a sixth place.

All the divisions were extremely large and the competition was run on a knock-out system, which means that if you lose once, you are out of the championship. A very tired, but grateful and happy group of Standerton karatekas returned to South Africa on Tuesday, 23 June. For more information, or to join this winning team, please contact Sensei Jannie on 082 6087 219.
