“To be servants of the poor…O Mon Dieu! What a lovely title and what a beautiful description! Servants of the poor, that is just

the same as to say Servants of Jesus Christ, for He regards as done to Himself what is done to them, and they are His members. And what did He do whilst on earth, but serve the poor?”–St. Vincent de Paul- (McKenna, Praying with Vincent, p.42)

Respect Life Judy Hyatt

By the dawn of the four-teenth century, the sacra-ment of confirmation was ripe for a rescue, since vast numbers of the faith-ful never received it, and when it was celebrated, it was done so in isolation from baptism and Eucha-rist. A bishop named Wil-liam Durandus set out to reclaim this liturgy, but he had a creative touch and added some things into the mix that had never been thought of before. One was a slap. Oddly, he replaced the kiss of peace at the end of confirmation with a slap on the cheek that endured to modern times. This “wake-up call” was related in his

imagination to a custom in the military, wherein cere-monies of knighthood and investiture involved a sym-bolic wound as a sign of willingness to suffer. Within every congrega-tion today there are people who have memories of fret-ting through their confirma-tion liturgies, anxious to know how enthusiastic a slap the bishop would be-stow. Durandus loved sym-bolism and had a reason for every ritual and practice, but his creative spin on the celebration shows how sadly adrift confirmation was from its anchorage in baptism, how far off-course from its home port of the eucharistic community. —Rev. JACKPOT In our lottery and sweepstakes obsessed culture, it is common to ask ourselves or others what they would do if they won. In today’s first reading, Solomon cer-tainly hits the jackpot. What prize could be greater than having God Almighty agree to give you whatever you ask for? Out of all the things he could have asked for, Solomon chose to ask for understanding, and was rewarded with it. We would do well to wonder what we would ask for if God made us the same offer. Actually God does make us the same offer each and every day, by granting us another day of life, a bit of the earth’s goods, some gift or ability, some call to goodness, some portion of the divine will. Each of these is a “prize.” We should stop and examine what we are go-ing to do with our prize: keep it or use it selfishly, or put it at the service of the spread of the gospel?

VBS was a huge success this year thanks to every-one who pitched in. The children raised over $100 dollars for pro-life with their service project. A great week was had by all! Thank you to all who contributed before, during, and clean up after.

You can do it all following Masses each weekend in the vestibule or go by the

$1000.00; Segundo premio, $500.00; Tercer premio, $250.00. Los boletos de rifa son $2.00 cada uno, o 6 por $10.00
